For Urinary Tract Infection "Had a UTI that turned into a kidney infection. I get chronic UTIs and have become resistant to many antibiotics. Day three of 300 mg, once a day, and my kidney infection cleared. Woo! I was left with a bladder infection still for the rest of the week. I started taking biofilm defense, and the antibiotic started to do its job properly. I’m guessing biofilm is the cause of my chronic UTIs. Feeling heaps better with this combo. Side effect is that I have extreme fatigue when I take this."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I’m on a 3-day course with these tablets for a UTI. Since taking them, I’ve had the worst throbbing headaches. I’m dehydrated and can’t seem to quench my thirst. I’m exhausted (really fatigued). I have a stiff neck and a sore throat. I’ve taken these in the past and never had side effects like this. They have changed somehow."

For Urinary Tract Infection "After taking two tablets, I went into anaphylactic shock, had to call paramedics, inject adrenaline, and spend 18 hours in Accident and Emergency. Just beware of this, I had never taken trimethoprim before. Dangerous drug."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I had a UTI and was prescribed Alprim (trimethoprim), 300 mg one at night. On the third day, I developed a severe rash on both lower legs and feet. I have taken it for 5 days, and I am not taking the last two. I have taken photos to show my doctor, definitely seems like an allergic reaction of some type."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This antibiotic has left me really unwell. I was prescribed 200 mg 2x daily for 3 days. I only took 3 tablets (1 a day). Firstly, felt like my kidneys had been battered, followed by severe stomach pain, extreme shivers and anxiety, also bad insomnia! Getting sharp shooting pains (like an electric shock all through my body)! Bad muscle aches as well. Warning! If you suffer mental illness, please avoid, as these pills really heighten everything. No more for me, it is an awful drug. Not forgetting headaches, facial pain, and horrendous nausea. I feel for all the patients experiencing these unwanted side effects. It's been 1 and a 1/2 days since stopping them, praying this will all pass real soon. In my opinion, they should be taken off the market pronto. Hope doctors realize what toxicity they cause. I never will take these again, not worth the suffering."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I can see that I'm not alone in having a bad experience with this medication. While I can't say for sure whether it caused it, I have unfortunately suffered from some of the side effects listed, particularly those in the rare section. It's bizarre that these reactions are classified as rare, as many others seem to have suffered similar reactions, which clearly means they are not rare. My GP said that this was the most common reaction, yet there are all these reviews, which is confusing. After taking only two tablets, I had to call a medic because I thought I was seriously ill and was on the verge of collapsing due to some weird and freaky heart issues that seemed to be caused by the medication. It turned out that everything was mostly fine, and there was no damage, but I still felt anxious and had some freaky thoughts, like I had delirium or something. It's frustrating when you have a bad reaction, and they say it's anxiety when it's clearly something else or something more severe. It's been about a month or two since stopping, and these effects are no longer apparent, yet I still don't feel one hundred percent, it's hardly acceptable, and I had a bad reaction."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Prescribed 1 Trimethoprim at night for a long-term UTI, and all it has done is made the UTI symptoms worse. I'm fine in the day, but at night, I can't sleep because of the burning/tingling sensation in my girly bits. The pain is indescribable. I'm seeing my GP today, so I'll get them changed. Worst antibiotic I've ever had."

For Urinary Tract Infection "It did clear up my UTI on about the second day of taking this, however, I was prescribed 200 mg to be taken twice a day. I would take this and would suddenly get a headache that wouldn’t go for hours, even if I took paracetamol. I got really bad nausea to the point I would gag but have to fight to not be sick and would get really bad neck pain, it also made me feel really down on one of the days. I stopped taking it after 4 days and still have 3 pills left, however, even after stopping on Tuesday morning, I sometimes wake up with neck pain and a bit of nausea with a funny taste in my mouth. I would simply AVOID this antibiotic."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Cleared up the UTI, but 5 weeks after taking the final tablet, I'm still having side effects. First noticed that I had a sore throat and stiff neck after taking tablets for 5 days (was given a seven-day course) but did not make the connection with taking antibiotics. Continued to take medication. I then developed a sensitive scalp, neck pain got worse, and on-and-off headaches plus shoulder and back pain. Felt awful. I was on holiday at the time, and it seemed to ease after about a week. Reported to my GP on returning to the UK. Now, 5 weeks later, on holiday again, neck pain, sore skin, and head pains are all back. Hope this helps others. Not sure if I should seek medical attention or just hope problems go away with time."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Prescribed trimethoprim for UTI at a walk-in clinic 4 days ago (after nearly 4 hours of sitting there). Not aware of any side effects, and today the agony has ended. So for me, it has worked, for which I am grateful, but certainly not a quick fix. Prescribed 200 mg tablets twice a day for 7 days."

For Bladder Infection "I wish I had seen these comments before I took Trimethoprim, which was several years ago now. It affected me really quickly too, and within about an hour, I also experienced negative effects from this drug. Never again! High anxiety and random thoughts. Had to keep the light on all night as I was so afraid. Extremely fatigued and depressed too. Senses heightened greatly, and at times had sudden surges of energy doing bizarre things. Thought I was having some sort of breakdown. Took it for a few days and then stopped. It left me feeling awful for several days. Put on another drug which worked well on the infection without such negative side effects."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Got 200 mg to be taken twice daily for a UTI. Night one, I started to vomit and had zero energy with an indescribable migraine, I put it down to the UTI making me poorly. Over the next few days, I started to have my muscles cramp up massively, my arms and legs would not move, and the energy to move them was too much. It also caused unbelievable acid reflux, I could not eat for a week, literally zero appetite. Lost a lot of weight. The last two days, the anxiety, insomnia, and panic attacks set in. This is when I checked on here for reviews and realized I wasn't the only one. It cleared the infection, but boy, what I put down over the week was something else, please find an alternative if you can."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Like many others on here, this drug and I don't get on. Two days in - anxiety overload, loss of appetite, feeling of pending doom, and no sleep. Can't really comment on its effectiveness because I couldn't endure it longer than two dosages... Won't be revisiting trimethoprim."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Was prescribed trimethoprim for a medium-grade UTI that Ural and Hiprex couldn’t quite clear. 1 x 300 mg for 7 days, 1st day I took two tablets. UTI has NOT gone away and seems to be getting worse again. Feeling fatigued and exhausted on this drug too, also off psychologically. This is the 3rd time I’ve taken it, belatedly remember that last time didn’t work too, and I went back to a female doctor who prescribed another round BUT ALSO wrote a penicillin script “in case it still doesn’t clear up,” which all UTI-prone females know does the job. I ended up ditching the trimethoprim and took the penicillin instead, which worked. My opinion as a 37-year-old female: refuse trimethoprim if you’re not allergic to penicillin. It doesn’t seem to be effective in the one 300 mg/day dose against UTIs, and the side effects alone on that amount are crappy. I’d rather a dose of thrush and the UTI efficiently gotten rid of than the side effects of this drug and the damn UTI STILL NOT cleared up."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was given ALPRIM for a bladder infection. I was told to take it in the evening with food. The first night I nearly went mad, I had nausea, itching, headache, pain in my lower legs and feet. Then on day 2, a severe rash appeared, and my feet both swelled. They were also red raw, I thought I must have had gout. Day 3, I took another tablet, and the rash spread on both legs. The pain was unbearable, moods were hard to live with. I have had infected cellulitis, and that was painful, but nothing like this. So on day 4, the lower legs all blistered, and I was in shocking pain. So that was the end of ALPRIM-never again. It is 3 weeks later, and the legs are slowly coming back to normal, still very red. So please be aware of this medication, and if you notice any changes in yourself, stop it. I will never take it again."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Prescribed a 7-day course of 300 mg twice a day. Felt OK on day 1 and 2, but day 3 was bad. Woke up jittery and shaky, bloated stomach, and no appetite. Took the morning tablet, and two hours later, I was having a panic attack, shaking with chills—nausea and bloating continued, as well as the jittery and shaky feelings. My neck is stiff and uncomfortable also. It's now the evening on day 3, and I'm still shaky and have no appetite. I do take antidepressants and feel this has definitely not helped with my anxiety. I can't take many antibiotics either, as I am sensitive, this is clearly another one to add to the list."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Prescribed a three-day course (one twice a day) for UTI over the phone. First day gave me a raging headache and dizziness. The second day (Xmas Eve) I felt nauseous all day. Decided to take my second dose with food. An hour later I started vomiting and violently shaking. This lasted a few hours when it seemed to subside (I'm 2 weeks post-COVID, so it's easy to blame COVID for everything, but this felt different). Xmas Day morning, the vomiting returned, along with the violent shaking - no fever. Also, my mind was full of paranoid thoughts. I have never been so scared in my life. Rang 111, the doctor said it was a reaction to the trimethoprim and to stop taking them (I had). Prescribed anti-sickness tablets and advised to call back if symptoms worsened. Thankfully, by Boxing Day I had recovered. I just can't believe these side effects aren't made common knowledge."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Trimethoprim worked fine 2 months ago but got another UTI and was given 3 days of treatment while waiting for hospital culture to be done. Trimethoprim makes me very, very tired and bad depression and just no appetite. Only one more day to go, so hopefully my appetite will pick up when dose is over."

For Bladder Infection "I took the 200 mg strength and was given 16 tablets. On the morning in which I took the very last dose, I came out in the most horrendous rash I have ever experienced and have been told I must never take that drug again. The rash, over a period of about 3 hours, spread over my entire body, including my face. I was hot and itchy beyond belief. My doctor was absolutely shocked, as she said that any reaction usually appears after taking just a few tablets. I'm in the U.K., so some questions are not relevant to me."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I start off by telling you shouldn't read reviews. This is my second antibiotic for UTI. I was terrified of taking the two antibiotics as I had suffered panic attacks on day 3 of trimethoprim, no side effects yet, so don't read reviews, everyone is different."

For Bladder Infection "I was prescribed this drug for a bladder infection. Within an hour of taking it, I had one of the worst headaches I've had since my last migraine. It was the intensity of a migraine, I tried paracetamol and ibuprofen, but nothing touched it. I've got horrible anxiety, I feel shaky, and my stomach feels truly awful. I feel sick and have no appetite. I also feel exhausted, I didn't sleep well last night due to racing thoughts. Much of what others have described has been my experience. I'm currently waiting for a call from my GP surgery for a different antibiotic. Take the advice on here: don't take it, it's a truly awful drug. It should be taken off the market!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "Been on this antibiotic trimethoprim for three days and no side effects. I’m on a longer course of the same drug. I mainly get headaches and nausea from this stuff and a bit of gas too. Been struggling mentally, I’m not sure if that’s related. It’s clearing up the infection well enough though, and having to deal with the pain in the butt of UTI symptoms for the past month, that’s good enough for me. I’m currently on day 3 of a 7-day course."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Was given a 3-day course of trimethoprim 200 mg twice a day. By day three, although UTI pain had gone, I started to feel so ill. Lethargic, achy, itchy, and nauseous, and by day five, I felt so nauseous I struggled to eat much at all. Now, nearly a month later, I still feel rough, have a very uncomfortable stomach and bowel, and feel constantly nauseous, just generally unwell. I think this antibiotic has played havoc with my system, and it is going to take a while for my body to fully recover. I won’t be having it again, I will ask for something different."
