For Urinary Tract Infection "I wish I had read the damning reviews on here prior to taking this. Was given 200 mg twice a day for 10 days. After the first tablet, I felt a little numb, I took my second at bedtime, and that’s where the complete unraveling of my physical and mental well-being started. I woke up literally unable to move, my body was so weak, I had severe kidney pain and shooting pains up my spine. I felt really weird and very, very scared. I tried to get up and collapsed, I shook uncontrollably and started to burn up. The anxiety and panic attacks were so debilitating I thought I had had a mental breakdown. I lay in pain, rocking and muttering for hours in complete panic, not knowing what to do or how to make it stop. A friend came over and looked after me for hours while I just cried uncontrollably and apparently talked about some really strange things! Scary doesn’t even come close to it, I actually thought my life was over. I will never take this again, not if someone paid me a lot of money to do so. Ban it!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I had a very bad experience with this antibiotic. I totally lost my mind. All the usual levels of anger, fear, and hurt were multiplied by 100. Thoughts totally dark, with my heart pounding like crazy. I ended up smashing plates! I couldn’t sleep. I saw the reviews from other people. Stopped the antibiotic, and after a day, I feel shattered but myself again. This could have been so dangerous. Please, if you experience something similar: you will be okay, just stop taking this antibiotic. After reading other people’s reviews, this drug should really be taken off the market. It could be dangerous, especially for people already with vulnerable mental health. All the best to you."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Was prescribed 200 mg twice a day for UTI & possible kidney infection for 5 days. Not even an hour after the 1st pill hit my system, I was throwing up, shaking, agitated, having horrific thoughts, anxiety, couldn't stand, and had such bad fatigue I could hardly lift my head off the pillow. Also had facial bone pain along my jaw and cheekbones. After my 3rd day (today, 4th March 22), my doctor advised to stop & switch to a different antibiotic as I am just not coping on these. I'd rather sit in the bath for hours on end drinking cranberry juice and water to flush out the UTI than ever take these again!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "This antibiotic, trimethoprim, is good for treating UTIs, but gives awful side effects. Had 3 days' worth of these, and although it cleared up the infection, it came with some unwanted feelings. Worse side effects were migraine-type headaches, fatigue, shakes, nausea, and racing heart. Absolutely awful, wouldn’t want to take these again. Thank God it was only 3 days!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "Given 200 mg twice a day for 2 weeks. The UTI cleared up okay, but I had severe anxiety and intrusive thoughts after 2 days. It was one of the worst 2 weeks of my life. I will NEVER take this medication again. (3 days after the 2-week course of medication was completed, my thinking returned to normal, and my anxiety disappeared.)"

For Bladder Infection "I had other antibiotics before and other medicines, but never had side effects or allergies till I was prescribed trimethoprim. Took 1 tablet, and after a few hours, I started to have a headache-not that painful, but after the second tablet, it was really bad. I woke up during that night. The next morning, the headache was better, and I thought I should take another tablet to see how I feel. I had it with food to be sure I wouldn't be sick. I regretted it after 1 hour or so when suddenly I got nausea, a bad taste in my mouth, and the worst throbbing headache ever! Couldn't do anything, just stayed in bed. Eventually, I started to feel better and stopped taking these. Reading other opinions on here, I think they should ban this antibiotic."

For Urinary Tract Infection "OMG, I have never experienced an antibiotic so awful in my life than trimethoprim 200 mg twice a day for seven days. Pains, anxiety, migraine, shortness of breath, and tearful. Hot flashes. I nearly fainted, I felt so ill. Stopped them Sunday and hoping I feel myself again soon."

For Prevention of Bladder infection "I have recently come out of day surgery. The plan was to remove a kidney stone that was in my bladder and laser a stone in my right kidney. Also, I had a stent fitted. I was in surgery far longer than planned. They couldn't find the stone... I have just spent the most horrific 24 hours of my life. Huge pain, blood pouring out when I pee, which is so painful, I feel as though I am dying. To top it all, I am given this drug, trimethoprim. I have never felt so ill, depressed, sick, and suicidal. I would ask your GP or consultant to prescribe some other medication for your condition. In my opinion, simply not worth the risk of going through this! I cannot imagine the suffering that scientific 'us' put fellow primates through when developing this monster of a drug. No doubt this post will get 1/10 as being 'unhelpful,' but if every negative drug experience is down-voted, then we are surely missing the point."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Awful medication. Took for 2 1/2 days and had to stop taking. Symptoms: - Acute pain in arms, legs, groin. For Urinary Tract Infection "Had trimethoprim for a UTI, one a day. The first night, I had the most horrible acid reflux all night, woke up the next morning with the sorest throat in the world and about 2 hours of sleep. Then, after night 2, I experienced a massive headache where I couldn't put my headset on to work, and I felt so tired. By night 3, I was a bit itchy on my arms, and a rash developed, but the UTI had gone by then, so I stopped treatment. If a doctor recommends alprim again, I'm going to say no."

For Bladder Infection "Took this antibiotic many times and never put two and two together that the bad tummy and headache, sore throat was the tablets. The last time I took them, I had salmon pink skin, rash, swollen eyes and lips, and diarrhea. Was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Would suspect if I took again it would be anaphylaxis. Steering well clear of this awful drug."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was given 4 days of trimethoprim for a UTI. After the first tablet, it brought on intense anxiety and panic attacks, and I couldn’t sleep. I stopped it after the second day, and it went away. It was awful, will never touch it again!!!"

For Prevention of Bladder infection "I’ve suffered from UTIs and chronic cystitis for about 8 years, and finally, I’ve been taken seriously and been given ultrasounds and put on a 3-month course of trimethoprim as a preventative measure to take 200 mg at night. 4 days in, I became really constipated and got bad headaches. 6 days in, I began waking up early in the morning vomiting, and subsequently felt nauseous the whole day and could barely stomach even the tiniest amount of food. Convinced myself I may be pregnant, 2 negative tests later, and after choosing to stop the medication after calling my GP, and now I'm 100% fine again, no nausea, headaches, or anything. Probably important to note I also got really bad aches and pains in my whole body too. Now been switched on to 50 mg of Nitrofurantoin at bedtime instead, so fingers crossed!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "Was prescribed a 3-day course of Trimethoprim here in the UK for a UTI (I have a history of these infections). I managed to complete the course, and it does appear to have resolved the infection, but by day 2, I had developed a crippling headache that nothing would shift-so bad it sometimes hurt just to move my head. Don't know what I would have done if the course had been longer. I advise caution, as the headache is deeply unpleasant."

For Urinary Tract Infection "After several bouts of urinary tract infections while awaiting prolapse surgery - bladder unable to void efficiently - I experienced extremely severe mouth ulcers on each occasion, lasting three weeks. I was told this was probably because I was 'run down.' However, most recently, half an hour after taking the first dose of Trimethoprim, I experienced intense burning of my lower lip, accompanied by extreme swelling. Recognizing this as the start of the severe mouth ulceration I had experienced previously on numerous occasions, I informed my doctor, who immediately prescribed antihistamine and told me to stop taking the Trimethoprim, substituting another antibiotic."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I got prescribed the medication for a really bad UTI, and I was so terrified to start them. I kept reading so many bad reviews of other people with really bad side effects. I delayed my prescription for like 2 days until the pain got so bad I just took them. It’s day 2 now of a 3-day course, and I honestly feel great! My pain started going down within the first 12 hours after taking the first pill. I've had zero side effects. I’m so happy it worked for me, and it might also work for you! The benefits far outweigh the risks. If I hadn’t started my course, then I probably would’ve ended up in the hospital. Don’t let the comments freak you out!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I'm on day 3 of this medication, and before reading these reviews, I have had a migraine that won't go away, shaky hands, trembling, paranoia, dry mouth, nausea, and the itchiest skin. These are all of the symptoms I've read of people that have taken this, it's actually scary, worth reading up before you take something new."

"I was prescribed 300 ng of trimethoprim 6 weeks ago for acne by a dermatologist who told me I should go on Accutane for 6 months and that will cure it, but she wanted me to go to all these check-ups first (family planning, psychiatrists, and come back to her every month, all expenses paid cash as I have no insurance, so I couldn't afford it. She gave me trimethoprim for 4 months probably just to get rid of me. This is the typical medical care in Ireland. 10 days into the treatment, I got a rash. At the time, I thought it was an allergic reaction from a burger, it went after a few days. Then I got major depression and anxiety. It became so bad that I couldn’t sleep, I was wide awake for over a week. Recently, I noticed my hair is thinning. It's falling out a lot, and I put 2 and 2 together and I stopped taking this drug. I wish I had realized sooner."

For Urinary Tract Infection "My GP gave me 3 tablets of Trimethoprim Mylan. I wish I had never taken them, the side effects are not worth it! The headache was so bad it just didn’t go away, unable to do anything, constant nausea, chills, and shaking. I cannot believe they can market this drug without extreme warnings. There was no pamphlet inside to notify of side effects. I am deeply upset about this, and I won’t ever touch it again. I am not exaggerating. Thank you."

For Bladder Infection "As I sit here with a UTI and wait to phone the GP in the morning for antibiotics, I suddenly remembered how ill I became on trimethoprim two years ago. Reading these comments, I didn't realize how many people have had bad experiences with this drug. The first thing I'll say to the doctor is, 'Don't ever give me trimethoprim again, EVER!' On day 3, I had to have an out-of-hours doctor come to visit me. I was so unwell. I was involuntarily violently shaking, I had pain throughout my whole body, the worst pain in my head, and felt like I had the flu. It was the tremors and shaking that were terrifying. The doctor told me to stop taking them immediately, and thankfully, after three days, I started to slowly improve. Never again! I'm not sure what my other options are for a UTI, as there's another antibiotic that I'm allergic to."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Day 3, and this drug has made absolutely no difference at all. I recall this exact same thing happening last time I had a UTI (a while ago now), and I was changed to a different antibiotic. My experience has not been a good one at all."

For Bladder Infection "I am currently on day 2 of trimethoprim. The 1st day after taking it, I had slight nausea and felt very drowsy, almost fell asleep in my class, but I also walked a lot that day. Took one this morning, fell asleep an hour or so after, but no nausea today. I had a really annoying UTI/bladder infection. I've never taken an antibiotic before, but I really don't want that damn infection coming back because it sucks. Pro tip: If you have an infection, see a doctor ASAP. Don't wait or use over-the-counter stuff. Thought mine had gone, a week later it was back."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Took this medication (trimethoprim) for UTI. Never again. Had a burning sensation in my stomach and awful pains. I was trembling and had the worst headache on day two that lasted all day. Nothing would shift it. By day three, I was so fatigued I could barely move. Should have stopped this tablet on day 1."
