For Urinary Tract Infection "I started on a 3-day course of trimethoprim on Monday for a UTI. It gave me severe diarrhea within a day. Never again. I am prone to UTIs. I usually get something else called cephalexin, but not this time, so ending up with severe migraine and diarrhea."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed a 3-day course of Alprim, one per night for a urinary tract infection. After taking the first tablet, a red blotchy rash appeared on my lower legs, extremely itchy. The next day, I noticed blisters had appeared in the rash. I also was extremely tired and had a burning feeling in my stomach, but as I only had one tablet to go to finish the course, I continued to take it, as I did not want the urinary tract infection to return. Two days after completing the course, the blistered rash is still with me, although the itching has ceased. The UTI has gone, but I will never take this again as I have really suffered, this must be an allergic reaction."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Was given a 3-day course of trimethoprim 200 mg twice a day. By day three, although UTI pain had gone, I started to feel so ill. Lethargic, achy, itchy, and nauseous, and by day five, I felt so nauseous I struggled to eat much at all. Now, nearly a month later, I still feel rough, have a very uncomfortable stomach and bowel, and feel constantly nauseous, just generally unwell. I think this antibiotic has played havoc with my system, and it is going to take a while for my body to fully recover. I won’t be having it again, I will ask for something different."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Taken for a UTI. I started having headaches with them and itching. Then, after a few days, I was covered in a rash, and my face had swollen up. I found it difficult to swallow. I had hives all inside my mouth. I had an allergic reaction to the tablet."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This drug worked very well for me and cleared up my UTI in a matter of 48 hours, although I was on a 7-day course of 2x200 mg daily. Unfortunately, once the tablets finished, the infection returned, so I needed a 2nd course. I'm currently taking a low dose in the evening to keep the infection at bay while the specialists do some tests. I normally get every side effect going and dread taking new medication in any form, especially after a horrific experience with Ciprofloxacin, but the only side effect I experienced with this was itchy ankles and feet on day two, but that didn't last into the third day, so I would class this as a minor side effect and insignificant. Good luck."

For Bladder Infection "I had severe cramp from the neck downwards. I couldn't sit, stand, or lie down. It was so severe. I stopped taking it and went to the doctor. It started easing off but was still there after a day. The doctor said it wasn't the Alprim and I should continue. So I restarted the medication, and it cranked up again in all its severity. It was awful, so I stopped, and the cramp went away."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Curses. Back on this absolutely rotten Alprim, but I have no choice. Keflex was OK for the UTI, but it seems the bug likes it and wants to holiday in my bladder. Alprim gives me the worst headache, plus feeling quite sick. Grit the teeth and get on with it. Of course, I will. Waiting now for the result of the urine test to make sure Alprim will work. Sorry for the grizzle. I really have nothing to moan about. Love to all."

For Bladder Infection "Due to allergies, trimethoprim is the best choice for a bladder infection for me. Used once before, about 4 years ago, after infection from a catheter after surgery. Works fine for me, and I have not had the side effects some experience. So, in my case, a very good choice."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed trimethoprim by my GP. I was a little confused as I was 25 weeks pregnant at the time. The drug can still be prescribed, but during testing, it was observed to cause some problems. Needless to say, the drug didn't work. I, as usual, ended up with thrush from the tablets, and when I had a check-up a week later, I still had the infection. The doctor has prescribed Nitrofurantoin. These pose a lesser risk to my baby but are a lower dose. Fingers crossed these will work. I live in the UK."

"I took the first dose and started to feel anxious, but continued taking it, and by the second day, I had the worst anxiety attack ever. Obsessive thoughts were nonstop, racing in my head. I was unable to sleep. Chills, shaking, thirst that never went away, and the worst symptom by far was the anxiety. I really would not recommend it unless it is the only choice. I had to switch antibiotics because of the side effects. Luckily, I didn't take a lot of the medicine because it was intense for the one day I took it."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Have been suffering from UTIs continually for 6 years. Going from Keflex to Alprim. The infection always comes back. Had Alprim before, but this time on day 1, huge headache. Day 2, extremely thirsty, have the shakes, trembling hands, and nausea. I really don't want to finish these but will take 3 all up and go back to the doctor."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Started taking trimethoprim 300 mg for UTI. Two hours after taking it, I felt like I was shaking inside. Went to bed as I thought I’d just sleep it off, slept for a whole hour, then couldn’t sleep for the rest of the night. The insomnia was horrible. Also, woke up with my heart racing. I’m not even going to risk taking a second tablet. Never again for me."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I had an uncomplicated UTI and was prescribed a 6-day course of TMP. After the first tablet, I developed intense nausea, chills, and overwhelming fatigue. I have now taken 3 tablets and have not eaten in three days. Even the sight of food makes me sick. I pretty much lay on my electric blanket with alternating chills and sweating. I am terminating usage and will never accept this drug again. I think that it did knock out the UTI."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was taking 200 mg over 3 days. On the second day, I got horrendous neck ache, ear ache, and a sore throat. I stopped taking it, but the symptoms carried on. I'm going back to the doctor's today for something else."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Took this antibiotic for 4 days once a day. It got rid of the UTI, but within a week of finishing, I broke out in a rash on my legs and arms and in my hair that I thought was eczema. Plus, I got a spasm and pain in my left kidney area and low back, so I thought the infection had not been cleared, so I went back to the doctor and he prescribed it again. I took one tablet and broke out in a worse rash all over my body. It’s everywhere. Hot, ugly, and I can’t stop scratching. It’s driving me crazy. How am I going to get rid of it? Another drug? Worst drug I’ve ever taken. Never again."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Since taking a low dose of this drug, I have had pricking all over my body. It feels kind of like shingles, though it's not. I am supposed to take it for 3 months, but will have to call the doctor to get something different because of this side effect."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Dreadful! These were so bad for my kidneys and bladder. Couldn’t urinate, weakness, dripping with sweat, couldn’t think or speak, trembling, and breathless. I felt like I’d been thumped in the kidneys. I believe this is due to the fact that they increase potassium levels!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "At first, I took a couple of Amoxicillin, and my symptoms had nearly gone by the time I had my appointment. My doc, for some reason, prescribed me this. Took my first dose last night for UTI. Got up and nearly fell into the wall, I was so dizzy. Couldn’t sleep at all last night until about 10 hours after taking the pill. Experienced anxiety, however, I do suffer from anxiety, but it’s medicated and generally okay. Still a little dizzy this morning, and my UTI symptoms have started to come back. :( Going back to get more Amoxicillin!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was put on Trimethoprim 200 mg tablets twice a day. After the 1st day, I did get a racing heart, but that stopped after the 2nd day. After that, I experienced feeling really, really low, depressed, not wanting to leave the house, and when I did, I felt very shaky and nervous. I have never felt like this before in my life, and I have never experienced this after taking any other antibiotic. I told the pharmacist about the symptoms/side effects, and she told me to notify my doctor/GP, which I did, and she said that when I complete the course (I was on day 6 of a 7-day course), after a few days, I should feel better. She said she won't prescribe this particular antibiotic to me in the future."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I'm halfway through a 7-day course of Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim) for a UTI. The distressing UTI symptoms improved the second day and for that, I'm grateful. But like so many others, I fell into depression. I spent that whole second day on the couch crying. Really down, no motivation, lots of guilt feelings, all-or-nothing, really dark thoughts. I know now that it's the drug and not my life that's a train wreck. I was surprised to find very little about depressive symptoms in the literature (journal authors should read this forum!) But I did find that this drug class can block vitamin D, folic acid, and dopamine. Makes sense now. Three more days..."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Was prescribed a 7-day course (think curse would be a better word) for a suspected UTI. Day 3 started feeling a bit weird/off-kilter. Very anxious, tired, loss of appetite, bloating, chronic abdomen pain, but persevered as instructed by GP. Day 5, in bits!! Not sleeping, aching, anxiety borderline manic. By day 6, I honestly thought I was dying and was about to go to A&E. Finished the course but will NEVER use it again. Stay away from it, ask your GP for an alternative."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I have just finished a week's course of trimethoprim for cystitis. It cleared symptoms within a few days, which was great, but they made me feel unwell in myself. I felt nauseous all week and also felt achy and lethargic, as if I were coming down with another illness. Once I finished the course, the nausea stopped, but a day later I woke up to find an itchy rash all over my upper legs-basically an allergic reaction. These antibiotics certainly cleared the infection quickly, but I obviously don't tolerate them very well. However, I was on them for a week, and I think that they can be prescribed for shorter lengths of time."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed this medication, as I had sepsis about 4 weeks ago. They think it's due to an infected gall bladder which the duct is blocked with stones. I can't take any of the -cillin family of antibiotics, so I was prescribed other antibiotics 2 weeks ago. They didn't work, so I was prescribed these. The first day I was fine, the second day I started feeling yuck and not wanting to go out. The second night, I struggled with anxious, horrible feelings which I don't normally have. On the third day, I realized it was these tablets when I looked online and read the reviews. I don't think these should be prescribed at all. I'd rather have sepsis again than feel how I did on this medication. Avoid."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Trimethoprim for a urinary tract infection and found that I started spotting and had no clue why this was happening. I felt alarmed and tried to find out the reason, but later after I got the urine test reports, I found that I did not have any infection and was taking this antibiotic for no reason, so I was asked to discontinue the antibiotic. When I stopped the medicine, the spotting stopped. I wanted to share this information as there is no mention of this side effect for this medicine anywhere."
