Tramadol for Back Pain "I’m a college student. I have severe scoliosis in my back and need surgery kind of soon :( My doctor prescribed me Tramadol recently due to chronic back pain. I currently take 50 mg three times a day for moderate pain. Sometimes more. My pain still exists slightly, but my depression is killed by the Tramadol :) I feel energetic and motivated compared to before. I don’t seem to mind the back pain even though it’s still noticeable. Tramadol is the ultimate pain relief combo for me. However, I experienced withdrawal symptoms, which included vomiting, restless leg syndrome, tiredness, chills, and profuse sweating. Felt like a fever! Tramadol is great when you’re on it, but really hard when you stop. The only other side effect I hated was severe constipation. No joke, worst of my life. In conclusion, Tramadol helped me a lot for my chronic pain, but surprisingly useful for elevating my mood. I would have highly recommended Tramadol if getting off this drug was easier!"

For Back Pain "Has transformed my life from constant pain and lack of sleep to normal! Been on Tramadol over 10 years now. The only downside is that if I forget to take it, I get withdrawn - very depressed, feel quite ill (nauseous, clammy). But since my back pain is incurable, this isn't an issue. I dread to think how I would live a normal life without the pain relief tramadol gives me."

For Anxiety "Doctor prescribed as an alternative to narcotics for pain from herniated disk in neck. Doesn't eliminate pain, but makes it tolerable. Best thing is I am not in some narcotic fog and life can continue. I was also taking Lexapro for some general anxiety. Lexapro and Tramadol are not recommended together, so with Dr. we decided to eliminate Lexapro. I was never a fan due to weight gain and if I missed a dose at night, I would have uncomfortable sweating and head zingers. It wasn't fun for the first week without Lexapro due to withdrawal! Didn't expect the nausea, sweats, feeling of extreme heat, head fog...feeling much more balanced and steady, and reduced pain with just Tramadol!"

For Fibromyalgia "My doctor prescribed Tramadol for my fibromyalgia, which I have had for 20 years, about 8 months ago. Over the years, the symptoms have lessened, but some days it is just hard to get up: pain, achy, foggy-headed. I tried the Tramadol, and it killed the pain almost immediately, plus it had an unexpected extra bonus. I have had a lot of foot pain for many years and sometimes could barely hobble around, the pain was gone. I could actually put on shoes and not be in misery. I'm going to London in a few weeks and now don't worry about the tours and being in pain. This medicine is my lifesaver. I have had two bad experiences with it, though both drug interactions with allergy medications: sweating, headache, and vomiting. Take it alone."

For Depression "I was given tramadol for foot pain by my orthopedist. I didn’t particularly notice that it helped my pain, but it certainly improved my mood. And fast. I’m not saying I was hugely depressed and have never been treated for depression, but my improved mood was a surprise. It doesn’t make me feel high or anything like that, and I’m not an overly anxious person, but it just makes me happier and not so grumpy! The only thing is, my doctor hasn’t given me much - guess it’s very controlled. So I got more elsewhere. It only takes about 50 mg a day for me. I did go several months without any and didn’t feel any withdrawal side effects other than some sweating and a return to my normal mood. I certainly would not want to take more than 100 mg a day. I have never taken much medication in my life. I have friends on anti-depressants, etc., and have mentioned this effect with tramadol. Interesting reading other people comment on this."

For Pain "62-year-old male with long-standing osteoarthritis. Under my doctor's supervision, tried many arthritis medicines with varying results. She took me off the one that worked best due to possible conflict with my heart disease. Now taking tramadol 50 mg as needed with good results. I occasionally have some symptoms which might be side effects, such as sweating, dizziness, interrupted sleep, decreased appetite, and others, but they are so mild and infrequent that I can ignore them. The dose works about an hour after taking and lasts for about 4 hours, giving me a major mood lift along with the absence of pain, a real spring in my step that lets me enjoy gardening, exercise, and work instead of just limping around. A major improvement in my life!"

For Back Pain "I have been taking Tramadol for about 4 years for spinal stenosis and now rheumatoid arthritis. Tramadol works very well for me. I have the 50 mg. I generally take 2, 3 times per day. It used to be less, but I guess I've built up some type of tolerance since this is all they give me, and it is most ineffective on the RA attacks. When that happens, I have to take 6 just to be able to lay down. The attacks usually last about 3 days, and the prednisone helps a great deal once it kicks in, I can go back to taking 2. I'm thankful for this medication, but just recently (the past two months), I have noticed a change in the Tramadol. I break out in sweats, feel feverish, lots of aches, and feel very hungry all the time, and no, it's not me."

For Chronic Pain "I have used tramadol for over a year now and can honestly say it has helped me get my life back. I suffer from chronic back pain, which restricted me every day. Even just to walk around the shops in pain. I was warned about the side effects and stayed in bed ready for them. Yes, I talked rubbish. Had sweats. Knocked me out and made me feel nauseous, but I stuck with it, and after 3 days, I began to feel better and could feel relief in my back. I am so grateful I actually have found a good doctor who prescribed me tramadol SR 150 mg twice a day. For me, it had worked, and I even went back to full-time work. Very happy. I do stick to the same brand. I did get a different brand from another chemist, and they did nothing, I was in pain all day."

Tramadol for Pain "This medication worked very well to ease my ankle pain. However, it left me feeling a little forgetful after taking it for a few days. It also made me very drowsy. But I was not in the severe pain that I had been. The most negative reaction was when I stopped taking the medication. The following day, I felt nauseous, shaky, dizzy, and had cold sweats. The withdrawal symptoms were very unpleasant."

For Back Pain "Was given this pain killer by my doctor due to a back injury. The doctor didn't really tell me much, just said it was a good pain reliever. Taking 8x50mg daily, the pain reduced, but felt that I was becoming dependent. If I missed a dose or was running late, I would start to feel sick. After 6 months, I have now started to reduce tramadol. PLEASE - If you can find another pain killer able to manage your symptoms, use it. Tramadol is difficult to stop. The withdrawal coming off tramadol is terrible. No sleep, diarrhea, dizziness, restless legs, cramps, sweats, unable to function, headaches. Tramadol is really not worth taking when you weigh up the pain relief and the withdrawal. AWFUL. PLEASE SPEAK TO YOUR DR OR PHARMACIST ABOUT THIS DRUG BEFORE STARTING. EVEN IF THEY SUGGEST IT, GET ANOTHER OPINION. I feel like an illegal drug addict trying to stop this."

For Chronic Pain "Prescribed tramadol for post-chemo and other meds pain. Had OxyContin 10 mg prior between treatments. Went off OxyContin, no withdrawals, only shaky hands for two days. After being “cured” of the main life-threatening illness, asked for no more oxy, no codeine. Given tramadol, not aware it was as sinister as I found. Taken 100 mg twice daily for twelve months. Took myself off it five days ago. Had a full opioid withdrawal, still going, worst is over, I hope. Hallucinations, disorientation, diarrhea, shakes, no body temperature control, lying in fetal position, sweats, night terrors, insomnia... I am horrified. I would not recommend this medicine and would never want anyone to go through the last five days. I don’t know when this will finish, at least my eyes are open again and I am speaking out here, they were closed for three days. Even the most experienced patient can be unfortunate. I sure am in this case."

For Back Pain "I was prescribed a course of Tramadol 50 mg for severe back pain and became violently ill. I had been prescribed Tramadol once before and had no problems, but this time after taking just two tablets 4 hrs. apart, I experienced extreme vomiting and diarrhea with profuse sweating. It took me a week to get over it. I thought perhaps I had the flu and tried taking the Tramadol again, once I was better, but became ill once again. The vomiting and diarrhea stopped after the first day, but the nausea and profuse sweating continued for another 5 days. It was TEVA brand."

For Back Pain "Started taking tramadol (50 mg) for a bulging disc that was discovered after an X-ray and MRI in 2011. I didn't take 50 mg/day consistently until November. Tramadol worked extremely well for my back pain and elevated my mood quite a bit. (Always a great thing for the husband and kids.) I stopped taking it altogether 3 days ago because I'm convinced it lowered my libido, and it was making me gain a few pounds. I'm not a big person at 5'2" and 112 lbs. Someone had told me that it does aid in weight gain. The side effects of withdrawal are true and include (for me anyway): body aches, irritability, mood swings, sweating, and dizziness. Unfortunately, my back pain has returned."

For Back Pain "I have been taking tramadol for 20 years, 4 mg pills a day. Recently, I have been trying to take myself off of this drug. I'm experiencing cold-like symptoms, sweating, can't sleep at night, restless leg. My attitude is in the dump. This is only my 3rd day. I'm trying to take one pill a day, and that is at night because I cannot deal with laying in bed not sleeping and the restless leg pain. I'm hoping and praying that God will give me the strength to get through this bad experience."

For Pain "Tramadol makes me feel very sick. I sweat, get pale, and literally have to just lay in bed. Pain is better than feeling like this. I've done everything I know to combat the awful feeling of tramadol. Just doesn't agree with me, I guess?"

For Chronic Pain "The doc said this was not addictive and that I could take up to 6 pills a day. I built up a tolerance and always ran out early. I also found out that I may have anxiety and depression because I felt like I was on cloud 9 on this stuff. But running out... running out is like plunging from heaven and falling to the depths of the ocean. Even reducing my dosage or waiting 2 hours from my regular schedule, I would start feeling the withdrawals... sweating, terrible diarrhea, body zaps, and restless legs. Constant wishing that I had just one more pill... sleepy during the day and cannot sleep at night. Feeling like I would do anything to relieve the pain. This stuff is more addictive than hydrocodone, but it is also an SNRI, so the taper has to be no more than 10% each week. Now I am currently taking hydrocodone again as well as Cymbalta... I wish I had never heard of tramadol... if you have an addictive personality and run out of your meds early, DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG."

For Pain "Doctor recommended taking 50 mg of tramadol for pain. I took 1 with no problem, took a 2nd 6 hours later, no problem. The next day I took one in the morning and the problem began. I felt like vomiting, slight stomach pain, hot flashes where I was sweating, and nausea. The pain did go away, but the side effects were terrible. Hope this helps someone, thanks."

For Pain "I was prescribed tramadol because I couldn't tolerate other pain meds with codeine or Tylenol. Tramadol is great until you run out. I have taken this drug for approximately 7 years now. I wish I'd never started it. It's just been a roller coaster for me, it helps me feel better, but does zero for the pain, and then you build a tolerance up, and it just gets worse from there. I've had withdrawals from this a few times. I've never had such horrible withdrawals as with this med: sneezing, coughing, hot, cold, chills, sweats, restless, depressed, and irritable to name a few, with lethargy. I am due for a refill tomorrow, I'm not picking it up. It's really hard right now, but going through this agony isn't an option again."

For Chronic Pain "I started taking tramadol for spinal stenosis and peripheral neuropathy about 11 years ago along with Lyrica. It seemed to help the pain for several years, but I started noticing the sweating if I was late on a dose. After several years, I wondered if it was the pain I felt or withdrawal symptoms. This last weekend, we left town and I forgot my pills. I am cold turkey now only because I want off. It is not pleasant, but doable, I hope. I was prescribed 400 mg/day, but usually only took 300 unless the pain got real bad. And yes, it did help my pain. I was told I would be on both meds for life. I want off the tramadol, but I can't get off the Lyrica. I tried."

For Back Pain "I was prescribed this medication (50 mg x 2 before bedtime) after I was in a bad car accident. The car accident caused two herniated discs that were pressing on a nerve root. I took this medication and absolutely could not sleep. My heart was racing, as were my thoughts. Also, it caused me to sweat a lot. It was absolutely terrible. I was only able to get 2-4 hours of sleep a night. I will never take this prescription again."

For Pain "Once I was diagnosed with sarcoidosis, I was given many different narcotics, and with these narcotics, I felt as if everything being said by myself or anyone else was echoing in my head, and the pain relief did not last long enough. I was originally given tramadol as a breakthrough pain medicine, and it didn't take me long to realize this was the only pain medicine I needed. I take 1-2 every 6 to 8 hours. This medicine does have a mood elevator, so that is a plus in my book. Narcotics seem to put me on edge. There are withdrawal symptoms such as cold sweats, feeling horrible, and joint pain, but with everything good, there has to be bad somewhere."

Tramadol for Pain "I have been taking Ultram for about 2 weeks now. The pain is still there but not as sharp as it was. The only side effects I have encountered are cold sweats and erectile dysfunction. I have heard that this medication causes erectile dysfunction but did not believe it until now."

Tramadol for Pain "I have been using Ultram for about 2 months. I think this medicine works very well for pain, however, the withdrawal side effects for me have been bad. If I stop taking this medicine for two days, I experience cold sweats, hot flashes, can't sleep, my legs get restless at night. I find that I have to take the medicine without having pain just to feel like my normal self again. The restless legs are probably the worst part of the withdrawal symptoms. It does, however, work fairly well for pain if taken regularly."
