For Pain "I've been using Ultram/Tramadol for the past 15 years for lower back pain. Without a doubt, they are a lifesaver for me. I've tried several different pain relievers: Vicodin, Percocet, OTC, and thermal patches, and they don't provide the relief that Ultram does. The side effects I've noticed are sweating and sometimes a decline in appetite... But the benefits outweigh these minor effects. With that said, I must also say that if I have some other sort of pain in different parts of my body, I can't honestly say they help."

For Pain "I was prescribed Tramadol by an emergency room doctor until I can get in to get my wisdom teeth removed. I'm supposed to take one pill every six hours, but I only take one pill whenever I have absolutely unbearable pain that doesn't go away within one hour. The pain relief is quick, within 20 minutes, taking it from a 10 on the pain scale to about a 5. Terrible nausea, shakes, lightheadedness, and sweats if I don't eat plenty before or right after taking this medication. Constipation is also caused, clearing up two or three days after ceasing."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "Tramadol works well for me most of the time, but I sweat really badly, I can go in Walmart and come out of the store soaking wet. I am still taking it because I need it, but it also makes me itch, not severely, but enough to bother me. Hydrocodone breaks me out in a rash. I guess I will just buy over-the-counter medicines and hope for the best, I do not want to go on narcotics."

For Pain "I have been taking Tramadol (200 mg every 12 hours) for several years now for chronic back pain (the side effects of polio). It only dulls the pain, but this helps me to get around from day to day. However, there have been a few side effects, such as headache, disturbed sleep pattern, and excessive sweating. I have been on various types of painkillers, but this one seems to work the best for me. One warning, don't just stop taking this medication, the withdrawal effects are quite unpleasant."

For Fibromyalgia "I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 10 years ago and have been on many different Rx regimes, including Tylenol 3 and 4, Cymbalta, Lyrica, and tramadol, with tramadol being the most effective. At my highest point, I was up to 400 mg per day, and that just made my entire personality change for the worse, so I backed off to 50 mg 4 times a day. Recently, I have experienced severe gastrointestinal issues, all pointing towards the tramadol usage, so I decided to wean myself off it. After 2 days at 100 mg a day, big trouble, now I have insomnia, anxiety, foot cramps, sweats, agitation, and overall pain."

For Chronic Pain "I've been on tramadol for 5 years after surgery on my knee. I now have tendinitis in my right shoulder that I take it for. I take 50 mg 3x a day. It really helps with the pain. I don't like that it constipates you. I experience sweating at times. But the pain is very manageable."

For Fibromyalgia "I take three tramadol per day: 1 with brunch at 8 a.m.; 1 with a snack at 2 p.m.; 1 with a light snack at 8 p.m. This schedule keeps me pretty much pain-free all day. Cons to using this medicine: I am hypoglycemic, so I can't take Tylenol for any type of pain. Also, tramadol doesn't help with any kind of headache, so to treat headaches, I use Advil. If I use Tylenol with tramadol, I have a hypo attack with much sweating and dizziness. But I like this medicine because it keeps my fibromyalgia pain manageable, and I suffer no additional side effects."

For Chronic Pain "My experience after having tried a handful of meds was that tramadol was my best option. The negative effects were quite apparent for me, and having experience with the other pain meds, I can attest that tramadol is more addictive than hydrocodone, morphine, and oxycodone. This makes this drug a hard drug to get off. If I miss or don't take a dose one day, I will feel bad for the entire day. Tramadol, for the most part, has helped me live a normal life and obtain a measurable quality of life. However, there are some notable side effects that also need to be managed and assessed for the long term. For instance, tramadol does dull out my emotional state, and it can decrease sexual drive/performance if you're a guy (so odd since I had no issues like that on other meds), bowel issues (which one will need to manage, which is normal), and there was a period where tramadol was making me sweat a lot."

For Pain "Tramadol does very little or nothing for pain. I don’t believe they have any clue about this drug other than the fact that addicts don’t like it much, so it doesn’t cause the provider's issues. No help, just side effects. Causes sweating, nightmares, and other awful side effects and is very habit-forming/addictive unless weaned off. Don’t get on it ever, and if you do, be sure to taper off under the supervision of a doctor who has the decency to admit that the only effective pain meds are the opioids at this time, which I have taken dozens of times in my life as prescribed without issue."

For Depression "I'm 64 and have suffered from depression most of my adult life, and during that time have tried just about every antidepressant available through several doctors. Tramadol, which I discovered by accident when it was prescribed for pain relief from an inguinal hernia, has been by far the most effective. I'm fortunate to live in Thailand where I can buy it over the counter, sadly, it has now been classified as a narcotic in the US. (Probably the FDA protecting the drug companies selling garbage antidepressants, or is that type of thinking the cause of my depression?) I take 50 mg at bedtime and 50 mg just after lunch. One warning: even at this relatively small dose, quitting tramadol is incredibly difficult. You get just about every type of withdrawal imaginable, and it lasts several weeks. Even if you forget to take a dose by a few hours, you know it. You get the sweats."

For Pain "I was given this drug for severe throat pain after going to the ER because the Tylenol with codeine wasn't working. I took it that night and was blessed with a good night's sleep. The next day the pain was still severe, so I kept taking it every 4 hours as prescribed, but I could not stay awake. My last dose was last night, and while it helped me sleep and took the pain away, I woke up this morning still no pain but a migraine, vomiting, and very bad sweats. I think my body is already going through withdrawals. So I have decided not to take it anymore. I still have the shakes, and I feel numb and can't think straight at times."

For Pain "Initially, tramadol worked wonderfully for the chronic pain that I experience. I was prescribed Ultram for foot and back pain as an alternative to hydrocodone. I never had any significant withdrawal symptoms or dependency problems from the hydrocodone, my doctor just had a problem prescribing it to me for reasons unknown to me. I asked him directly about the long-term effects of taking tramadol, and he assured me that it was nothing for me to worry about. He was wrong. I understand that every drug affects everyone differently, but I have never felt so terrible in my life as I am currently in the process of getting off of tramadol. Body aches, cold sweats, mood swings, overall body stiffness... I feel miserable."

For Fibromyalgia "I have used tramadol for fibromyalgia for about six months now. It is genuinely effective with no side effects for me at a dosage of 100 mg instant release every 12 hours. However, I find that I often fall asleep before my second dose due to fatigue, and without fail, if I miss my 8 PM dose, I wake up at 1:30 AM in mild to moderate withdrawals, with cold sweats, stomach pain, diarrhea, and a general sense of discomfort. It's worth this risk to have my pain controlled well, as this is definitely my strongest pain medication, but it does suck every time it happens! If you are using this drug for chronic pain and you have an issue like me where you may accidentally go 16 hours between doses, set an alarm at the correct time and save yourself a lot of discomfort. I take it at this dosage and frequency so that each dose lasts at least 8 hours, with the aftereffects lasting the next four. Having my pain well managed for eight hours means the next four won't be nearly as painful."

For Pain "I was prescribed this medicine for a bulging disc and sciatica in April of '08. The doctor told me to take 2 x 50 mg tablets of Tramadol along with one 800 mg of Skelaxin and an 800 mg of Motrin. The first day, just after taking the 2 x 50 mg pills, I started sweating, felt faint, and wound up vomiting. I spent the rest of the day in bed. The pain was gone, but I had flu-like symptoms for two days following. I called my doctor, and he told me to lower the dosage to just one 50 mg pill of Tramadol a day. I didn't vomit, but I had the same side effects again. I'd feel fine for a few hours, then for the next day or two, I couldn't focus without getting an intense headache. I couldn't walk without being dizzy and losing my footing."

For Pain "This medicine did get rid of my pain from a fall. However, I took it as directed and only had 100 mg in my system. I was woken up approximately 2 hours after the second pill with bad stomach pains and proceeded to have adverse reactions, including cold sweats, clammy skin, dizziness, which went into vertigo, which lasted some 18 hours, and I am still not completely stable. I expect that the fact that I have not been on any prescription painkillers for over 30 years may have something to do with my reaction. However, the reaction was worse than the original pain."
