For Pain "Is it the most random drug in the universe or what? Until I was given a prescription that didn't play well with tramadol, I had a fairly high dose RX for a pain disorder, and my spouse had also been on it for an injury. We joked that tramadol seems to roll a six-sided die when you take it. 1-no effect at all. 2-no effect on pain, but nausea and feeling icky. 3-no effect on pain, but you're too stoned out to care. 4-too stoned out to do anything, but pain is gone. 5-no pain, but you feel awful. 6-no pain, and also not stoned. We both tried a pain tracker app to see if there was any rhyme or reason to the randomness. Nope. The food you eat, time you take it, etc., seems to have no effect...how it will affect you is random."

Tramadol for Pain "Personally, the medicine worked well for chronic pleurisy pain (bad stabbing sensation in side with flu or pneumonia), but I had horrible side effects. Dazed constantly, hallucinations, cold sweats, nausea."

Tramadol for Pain "I have arthritis in most joints and back and neck pain. I have used Tramadol for 2 years now. It was life-changing in the way it relieved pain without the nasty side effects of hydrocodone (I got very irritable when it wore off). Seems to be taking a higher dosage for less relief but still would rather continue the Tramadol and use something for breakthrough pain on physical work days. If you experience nausea, try a lower dose and work up to more. Stick with it, the nausea went away for me. When I forget a day or so and go back to it, I sometimes get nausea again."

For Back Pain "I was prescribed a course of Tramadol 50 mg for severe back pain and became violently ill. I had been prescribed Tramadol once before and had no problems, but this time after taking just two tablets 4 hrs. apart, I experienced extreme vomiting and diarrhea with profuse sweating. It took me a week to get over it. I thought perhaps I had the flu and tried taking the Tramadol again, once I was better, but became ill once again. The vomiting and diarrhea stopped after the first day, but the nausea and profuse sweating continued for another 5 days. It was TEVA brand."

For Back Pain "After Meloxicam stopped being effective for my DDD back pain, my doctor prescribed tramadol. I did feel a little nauseous after taking the first 50 mg tablet, but the quick pain relief and reduction in muscle tension was dramatic. The next day, I noticed my thoracic back was flexing as I bent over in the shower, the first time in years. It seems to have broken the vicious cycle of pain causing muscle tension and muscle tension causing pain. My mental state has improved as well, due to being out of pain, no doubt. My sleep is much improved. I have not experienced nausea taking tramadol again. I read here about dependence and withdrawal, so I will reduce my dosage to one 50 mg tablet every other day and stop prior to being on it for a week."

For Pain "I've been taking tramadol for a few months because of pain in my thumb joints. The recommended dose (50 mg 3x per day) was too much for me, resulting in headaches and nausea and (if taken just before bed) sleeplessness. But I reduced the dose to just 1/2 of a 50 mg pill taken at 10 a.m. and the other half at 4 p.m., and that seems to be working fine. Pain gone and a major boost in my mood. Also, I had to reduce the dose gradually over the course of a couple of weeks as I felt a little anxious when I cut the 3x 50 mg per day down to just 1/3 of that dosage. I feel much better but am careful not to take too much."

Tramadol for Chronic Pain "I have been taking Tramadol for a while for endometriosis. It works okay. It makes me extremely restless, though, and after about 8 hours, I get really nauseated and end up vomiting. It does help with the pain, though. Not completely."

For Back Pain "I have lower back pain due to spondylolisthesis. (Disk between L4 and L5 moving forward and putting pressure on nerves in the spinal column) Tramadol works like a narcotic; it can cause extreme nausea if never used before. Unfortunately, a tolerance develops very fast; at first, 100 mg would kill my back pain completely. But over two years' time, I need about 300 to 400 mg twice a day, with an NSAID booster. The injections my doctor gives me in my knees and spine are very effective in restoring lost flexibility, but still, Tramadol cocktail for pain. I'm 66 years old and also have tendonitis in my knees and SI syndrome. Pregabalin is great with tramadol."

For Fibromyalgia "I've tried so many non-narcotic pain meds and muscle relaxers for chronic pain, and Ultram is the only one that has helped! I do get extreme headaches sometimes from withdrawal, and if I've taken more than prescribed, I get nauseous and itchy."

For Back Pain "My personal experience: it helps my back pain for a couple of hours, but I just have to keep downing 100 mg every 2 hours, and I'm not doing that. You get high off of it with little pain relief. My side effects: severe headaches, nausea, dizziness. **If you are taking antidepressants, research serotonin syndrome.** Can also increase depression. Stay safe and check this site for drug interactions. Doctors prescribe tramadol for pain they don't consider severe enough for, say, Percocet or Vicodin, but severe enough that it still needs an opiate to manage the pain. Tramadol is the little brother of the opiate/opioid family. People don't talk about 'tramadol abuse,' but it is very addictive, and for tons of people, it simply does not cut it for chronic pain."

For Pain "Tramadol makes me feel very sick. I sweat, get pale, and literally have to just lay in bed. Pain is better than feeling like this. I've done everything I know to combat the awful feeling of tramadol. Just doesn't agree with me, I guess?"

For Back Pain "I had a horrible experience with this medicine, took only 100 mg once in the morning for severe low back pain and could hardly function. I became so nauseous, vomiting, disoriented, dizzy, my head was clouded, all I could do was try to find a place to lie down. I guess this is what they call high intolerance/allergy to certain medicines. If you know you have a sensitivity, be very careful. It helped my pain some but made my day absolutely miserable."

For Pain "Doctor recommended taking 50 mg of tramadol for pain. I took 1 with no problem, took a 2nd 6 hours later, no problem. The next day I took one in the morning and the problem began. I felt like vomiting, slight stomach pain, hot flashes where I was sweating, and nausea. The pain did go away, but the side effects were terrible. Hope this helps someone, thanks."

For Chronic Pain "I'm lucky. I got Tramadol 150 mg (super strong) after breaking my tibia. With an external fixator, some nights are trouble-free, others I don't sleep at all for the chronic pain. The only effective pain relief 'til now has been the Tramadol. I only use it when nothing else works, and nothing else works quite like Tramadol. Luckily, I don't suffer from too many side effects (except drowsiness), but 150 mg is a strong dose, knocks me right out. Some people also need antiemetics to tolerate it as they commonly cause nausea. As far as I know, Tramadol is one level down from morphine in the treatment of chronic pain."

For Chronic Pain "I've taken tramadol for 6 years for severe migraines. I've used hydrocodone too, but I choose tramadol over hydrocodone as it works better than anything else I've tried. It also helps with my depression and restless leg syndrome, and knee pain-that's 4 symptoms of relief in tramadol for me. 100 mg twice a day. The only complaint I have is that tramadol is very addictive. If I stop using it, I have really bad withdrawals: hot/cold sweats, trembling, shaking, loss of sleep, no energy, nausea, and extremely painful headaches. When my doctor first told me to take them, he said they are not addictive, which is not true. Maybe for short small doses, but for long-term use, they are highly addictive. Use caution when using for a long period of time."

For Chronic Pain "Started taking tramadol in 2009 for back and hip pain. It worked awesome and made me somewhat hyper! Lost 10 pounds, which was good because with that kind of pain you don't want extra weight bearing down on you! Was up to 6/50 mg a day at one point, and they seemed to not work as well, so I dropped to 3/day for a few years with success. Pain is worse now, so I'm back up to 4/day. This is very addictive, I've had horrible withdrawal symptoms if I forget to take one before bedtime. Morning comes, and I'm in horrific pain and having withdrawals, not a pretty picture! Usually takes 5 or more hours to get back to normal and be a person again! Also, I am nauseous every time I take it, but only for about 5 minutes."

For Back Pain "I have been on this tramadol for just a few weeks for permanent nerve damage and sciatica. I've been tried on a few medicines, and one worked before but has come under restriction in the UK as a controlled drug (gabapentin) due to people abusing them, so now I am on this tramadol, they work great in removing the burning, numbness, and severe pain that travels from my butt to my toes on my left side for the best part of the day at least. But, they have not been without their side effects! I had bad nausea when trying to get to sleep, bad constipation, and delayed emptying of my gut, hemorrhoids due to the constipation, over-tired during the day when trying to do my work (manual worker), feel bizarre sometimes, like I am high, vibrating inside lol. Been told by my doctor to bear with it, my body will eventually settle down, and it is just I have never had opiate meds before. I hope he is right, but I am also told that they are very addictive, this worries me a bit!"

For Pain "This medicine, tramadol, is horrible synthetic. I have never felt worse in my life. Yes, it eased my pain, but the side effects were textbook for me. Nauseous, dizzy, hallucinating, felt like I was in a gyroscope when I would close my eyes. Stomach cramps beyond belief. I am sweating a cervical reconstruction surgery, and this medicine did not work for me. I would rather deal with the pain than the side effects."

Tramadol for Pain "Aside from occasional nausea if I don't take it with food, I find it takes the edge off my lower back and arthritis pain. Causes some drowsiness, so I don't take it when I need to drive. Works better for pain than pretty much anything else I have tried."

Tramadol for Pain "I was prescribed this medicine for moderate pain after surgery. My incisions bothered me, and I took 4 pills a day for the first 3 days, then usually 2 a day. However, the side effects: nausea, palpitations, dizziness, drowsiness and sleeplessness, constipation and mental vagueness were really too unpleasant to be rid of minor pain, so after a week I stopped taking it. It is annoying that after stopping it, I suffered nausea, palpitations, and weakness/drowsiness after large meals-possibly due to withdrawal."

For Chronic Pain "Takes away all pain. I was told that this is a drug that works differently for people. I am one of the lucky ones. Very quickly takes away all pain. I was given it intravenously immediately after surgery, first for a hernia and second for a cat bite that had resulted in a septic joint. My partner will not take it because it made her feel nauseous. I have no nausea. Interestingly, morphine had no effect on me despite being supposedly the more effective medication for pain. The lesson is that different people's bodies respond differently."

For Chronic Pain "My GP prescribed Tramadol for the severe pain I suffer. I took it for a while, it neither relieved my pain nor made me happy. Till now, I cannot understand how this medicine makes people happy. This medicine was very bad and had side effects. It made me dizzy, feel nauseous, and gave me a headache. It was really bad medicine."

For Pain "I was prescribed Tramadol by an emergency room doctor until I can get in to get my wisdom teeth removed. I'm supposed to take one pill every six hours, but I only take one pill whenever I have absolutely unbearable pain that doesn't go away within one hour. The pain relief is quick, within 20 minutes, taking it from a 10 on the pain scale to about a 5. Terrible nausea, shakes, lightheadedness, and sweats if I don't eat plenty before or right after taking this medication. Constipation is also caused, clearing up two or three days after ceasing."

For Pain "I used Tramadol 100 mg every night for 8 months following shoulder surgery. It worked great and helped with sleep. Only complaint I have is sudden withdrawal symptoms. I have had severe nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and headache. I started seeing a shrink for other problems and decided to go cold turkey on the Tramadol due to the medicines prescribed by the shrink. I was NOT advised to do so and can blame only myself. It took me 48 hours to figure out why I felt so miserable. I also have terrible aches and pains in my neck and joints. If you decide to stop your Tramadol, seek your doctor's advice. Weaning off is a much better option."
