Promethazine for Nausea/Vomiting "In 2015, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and had emergency surgery to save my life. Seven years later, I have ups and downs with flares and how it makes me feel. Mainly, it’s nausea. So, my doc prescribed promethazine (Phenergan) to help, and boy, does it. I can be sick and not want to eat to keep weight on. But after one or two, I can eat anything."

For Sedation "I can't say this drug has no effect, but I'm a chronic insomniac and have been treated for it with Xanax or Klonopin for at least the last 20 years. While mild doses of those drugs have induced sleep, when I've desired more sleep than those 'benzos' have allowed me, I've tried promethazine in varied doses, from 12.5 to 75 mg, and it just doesn't induce sleep like I had hoped. It's very effective for the reduction of nausea, but I'm lucky if it barely makes me drowsy. Sometimes, even the higher doses had no effect at all. Bottom line: This med gets great reviews, so it works for some, but I'm proof that it's not effective for everyone."

For Sedation "I've seen people on here say this is NOT an over-the-counter medication where I live. Also, this is nothing like Ambien - Ambien is a benzodiazepine medication, so if you're expecting that, then don't! Works good for upset stomach as well as mild sedation. Don't expect a 'Xanax' effect, but it will help with your appetite and allow for some rest. Also works well to help nausea if you take medications that make you sick, like morphine, for example. I am NOT a professional or even in the medical field. There are way too many 'shadetree' pharmacists out there, so consult a real one for a real diagnosis or answer. It's just they won't tell you what you 'want' to hear like people on these forums will."

Promethazine for Opiate Adjunct "I have been taking Phenergan 25 mg for years now. I have no problem with it, and it works fine for me. This is for the lady that said she was 65 years old and her daughter had the same reaction. You are severely allergic to Phenergan, do not take it anymore, please. My wife was prescribed it for nausea and vomiting. She started taking it, and every time she started feeling like throwing up, by the time I made her go to the emergency room, she was on the couch with her feet raised. I mean, I had to put a cinder block under the end of the couch to raise it up enough for her. She could not stand up without throwing up, and I had to hold her up to get to the bathroom. She was in the hospital for a week. Now she cannot look up without getting dizzy and going to pass out!"

For Nausea/Vomiting "I've been struggling with chronic nausea for a year now, as well as an extreme fear of vomiting and anxiety nausea, which I was happily surprised to see a lot of other people who took this medicine said it was a lifesaver for that. I had such high hopes for this medicine, but unfortunately, it almost ended in a trip to the ER. Within three hours of taking it, I felt extremely drunk, hollow, tingly, like my arms weren't attached to my body, heart palpitations, which of course only triggered a panic attack and made it worse. Oh, and it literally didn't even touch my nausea. :( Needless to say, that was my first and last dose!"

For Nausea/Vomiting "I occasionally become very nauseous, mostly from too much heat (over 85 degrees). This medicine does wonders for me in a very short period. Rarely do I require more than one (1) tablet per episode. I am very happy with results over the last two (2) years."

For Nausea/Vomiting "I just had a major spine surgery (10-level spinal fusion with rods and screws) to fix my scoliosis. I was under general anesthesia for 5 hours. I'm almost 3 weeks post-op now, and this nausea medicine has been a lifesaver since day 1. I don't know if my problems are still from anesthesia or from the post-op pain medicines, but this nausea is awful and promethazine takes it right out. (Just be willing to nap)."

For Nausea/Vomiting "My doctor prescribed it when I had my wisdom teeth removed. But even after that, I was nauseated every time I ate, so depending on how bad it was, I would take the Phenergan. It would help a lot and put me to sleep. Only one time it took longer than expected. But overall, it's very good."

For Nausea/Vomiting "I felt like I had been drugged. It made me pass out for 10 hours, I felt like I couldn't move after waking up. I had to force myself to throw up in order to feel better, and it made me irrationally angry, followed immediately by uncontrollable tears. I only took it once and threw it away. It gets the rating it does because it kicked my nausea in the butt. Unfortunately, it also kicked me in the butt."

For Nausea/Vomiting "My doctor gave it to me for morning sickness, and it seems like it makes it worse. They gave me 25 mg. I took it 3 times and threw up each time and only wanted to sleep. After reading people mention they took a 10 mg dose, I broke my pill in half, thinking maybe the dose is too high because I don't take medicine like that. So far, I haven't really felt too nauseous, but will keep monitoring it. Glad I looked at other people's results with the medicine."

For Nausea/Vomiting "I absolutely love Phenergan for things like nausea and sedation. I was even given it as a child, back in the '80s, to help me sleep as a result of my ADHD. Unfortunately, the coloring on it (blue), gives me chronic heartburn within minutes of taking it. This in turn makes the nausea even worse. Most of my nausea is anxiety-induced. I took one an hour ago, and because of the color of the pill, it induced a massive wave of heartburn and nausea, and I was just sick on myself within minutes of taking it. Also, I get the most horrendous restless leg with it, to the point I cry. Despite the heartburn, what has just happened, and the restless leg, I still take it because it works."

For Nausea/Vomiting "I am 21 years of age and have suffered from migraines for nearly 15 years now. Phenergan is my go-to medication for the nausea and vomiting that sometimes comes along with my headaches. I usually just want to crawl into a dark hole, but with this medication, I'm able to control my nausea and prevent myself from being sick. It also helps with the stomach pains I sometimes get from taking Excedrin Migraine."

For Sedation "Literally only been taking it for three days, and my insomnia is actually worse than it was beforehand. I was told it would only take 30 minutes to kick in, but I tossed and turned for up to 3 hours, then woke up every hour or so for absolutely no reason. I'm honestly not sure if I want to continue taking it because I'm even more exhausted than I was previously, with a wicked headache and dry mouth to boot. Its only saving grace is that it might help deal with some of the nausea that comes with starting a new antidepressant, but even then I'm doubtful it will."

Promethazine for Nausea/Vomiting "As a type 1 diabetic, I occasionally get nausea and/or vomiting with low blood sugar. If blood sugar levels are severely low, you may feel nausea and something similar to a migraine headache, in my case, with locking-tight neck muscles. It is hard to get blood sugar levels up when you are vomiting. I have found a Phenergan suppository is the only thing that works for me during these episodes. It works very quickly to stop nausea and gives me enough time to eat before making me sleepy. I have been diabetic for more than 40 years, so it is not as though I am inexperienced, and I have both an insulin pump and blood testing equipment with which to check my glucose levels before I ever consider going to sleep. I do not recall ever being truly 'knocked out' long term, but asleep for a few hours, long enough for the headache and tight neck muscles to subside."

For Nausea/Vomiting "I was given this to take for severe nausea while pregnant. The first time I took it, it helped me sleep through the night but didn’t really help with the nausea. The next two days that I took it, I realized it made me have terrible mood swings, and I felt like I was drugged up the following day :( I could barely function. I will not continue taking this medication."

For Nausea/Vomiting "I took one 12.5 mg tablet and had the worst side effects: dizziness, not feeling able to hold my head up properly, nausea was worse. I felt like I couldn’t control my movements very well. I prefer prochlorperazine so much more than promethazine! Wouldn’t give this medication to my worst nightmare! Would never touch this drug again!"

For Nausea/Vomiting "I would rate this an eight. Unfortunately, I found that if I take it when I am already nauseated (the kind where you know you will be throwing up in about an hour), it is too late. And this medication burns my throat when it comes back up. (Sorry to be a little graphic, but this is a nausea/vomiting medication.) I have to pay really close attention. If I have any vertigo that day, then I take one. Otherwise, like I said... it doesn't help. Rather like Vicodin and a few other pain relievers that won't stop your toothache once it has taken hold. I hate taking it when I am not sure. It certainly does make me sleepy."

For Nausea/Vomiting "I'm a cancer survivor, and promethazine was prescribed to me during the time when I was having chemotherapy and radiation. I was very nauseated at the time. My doctor prescribed me the promethazine, and it really worked. Plus, I got some sleep."

Promethazine for Nausea/Vomiting "My experience was awful. This medication was put into my IV and in seconds, I felt myself going into a deep sleep. I wasn't fully in the hospital when it took an effect. I thought that I could not breathe and screamed for oxygen. The nurse stated that I was breathing just fine. Well, I didn't need oxygen, just a bad trip. Yes, nausea went away quickly. I guess it is effective, but not worth the trip, very scary."

For Light Sedation "Promethazine was prescribed twice to me for mild sedation by my neurological doctor. I tried it in doses between 10 mg and higher. This doesn't make me drowsy unless I'd had pain also and taken an opioid with it. The only effect I received was the taste of it. The second time it was given to me instead of zopiclone. Still, no effect. I tried it once as a treatment for nausea; 40 mg. didn't work."

Promethazine for Nausea/Vomiting "I was sick for two days in a row. I had to go to the ER, and I was on Zofran, which helped during the day, but at night my morning sickness, a.k.a. HG, ravaged. My mother-in-law suggested this drug as a suppository because she had similar problems! I still am nauseous, but I’m finally having a night out of the ER. Now if it could only make me sleepy, lol."

Promethazine for Nausea/Vomiting "I've been taking this medication for a minimum of 15 years. It is a very good medication. I use it for nausea and vomiting. It does the trick. It also aids with my pain & insomnia, only when combined with other meds. But, even though I'm well educated on Phenergan, if I take it too frequently, it gets built up in my system and gives me severe restless leg symptoms! If you've never had it - avoid it! Just take it only when necessary."

Promethazine "I have suffered bouts of severe stress, anxiety, and being unable to sleep on and off for years, sometimes a year being okay then ill again. Recently, I started taking Phenergan to help me sleep (10 mg tablets). I started off with one tablet in the daytime to see how my body reacted to it. Within 20 minutes, my anxiety reduced and my nausea went completely. In an hour, I was very tired but stayed awake. At night, I then took two (10 mg) tablets, I slept great and woke up without a headache. I still had anxiety and nausea, so I took one tablet in the morning, it worked within 10 minutes (for nausea and anxiety). Then at night, I took only 1 tablet instead of 2, I still slept great with no side effects and it took 1 hour 30 minutes to get me to sleep. I totally recommend them, BUT read the leaflet, it does say to start off low and then increase if need be. You must also be careful if you are taking other drugs, even herbal pills! And I wouldn't drive if you are taking them during the day for hay fever, etc."

For Nausea/Vomiting "The first time I took it, it made me severely disoriented and dizzy. I also slept all day. I tried taking it again last night for vomiting and nausea, upon taking it, I immediately projectile vomited to the point of bleeding. I do not recommend."

For Nausea/Vomiting "I've had horrible non-stop nausea and vomiting during my pregnancy, and after being prescribed this, it gets rid of it 100%. I tried taking 1/2 the first few times, but it makes me SO tired I can barely function, and it's kind of depressing. At that dose, it makes me sleep the whole day away, makes me forgetful, and it makes it kind of hard to talk normally. So I switched to a quarter of a tablet, and that works for me. I try to only take it when I really need it."
