"This is a very potent drug. I'll say that. Highly effective for nausea and works very quickly, and that was what I was taking it for, so I'm giving it a 9. The one point deduction is for the weird side effects. Definitely makes you super drowsy, and I also experienced mood swings, crying jags, and what almost felt like hot flashes. But they're preferable to the extreme nausea, so... weigh your options."

"I was prescribed this medicine about a year and a half ago to get over a stomach bug. Then, when I got Clostridium difficile a year ago, I asked for this medicine again. I have an undetermined stomach condition that I've had since I can remember. It makes me feel nauseous often. My doctor gave me a refillable prescription of promethazine. Every single time I take promethazine, my nausea is gone in 40 minutes or less! It has been wonderful for me. It does make me sleepy, but it's worth it for me if it stops the nausea. I take 1/2 of a 25mg tablet if I'm feeling only somewhat bad, 1 tablet if I'm feeling bad, and rarely two tablets if I feel extremely bad. It is the only thing I've tried that always works completely without fail. I love it!"

Promethazine "I had a very serious vomiting problem with my first pregnancy. I had to be hospitalized and then put on an IV at home for fluids. When I was about two months pregnant with my second child, I was given promethazine, and it was the only thing that kept me from the same issues as the first pregnancy. I was still sick every day, and I was still vomiting sporadically. However, I was able to actually eat and drink and gain weight. My son was born fine. Now I am pregnant with my third and have started on it earlier than the second pregnancy. I was not aware that the effects of the drug on unborn children are unknown. My doctor had told me it was safe. Hopefully, this next baby will be fine as well."

"I have had to take this to keep from being sick from vertigo caused by multiple sclerosis. It has worked very well if I catch it before it gets to the point of actually vomiting. A little dizzy means, 'OMG! I HATE throwing up! Dive, dive, DIVE!' All while I throw myself at the bottle like I'm throwing myself on a live grenade to save my platoon. The ONLY reason it does not rate a ten is what I feel to be too long of a lag between ingestion, of a tablet, and the beginning of efficacy."

"I have been taking Phenergan for relief of nausea for years. When I used to suffer from chronic migraine headaches, Phenergan would not only help with the nausea but also help me sleep and help with the pain. Several years ago, I was in the hospital for a bad post-op bone infection (from a compound fracture), and I had awful nausea, and the current drugs of choice couldn't control it like Phenergan."

"Go-to medication for nausea. Makes you a tiny bit groggy, but that side effect goes away. It's been around forever, and I mainly use it with Excedrin when I have a migraine to subside the nausea. The only thing that comes near it is Zofran, and this is over $100 cheaper."

Promethazine "I've had this prescribed for surgical procedures, with migraine medications, and when I take opioids because they cause swelling and intense itching. This is great. It ends vomiting, suppresses nausea, eliminates swelling and itching. The generic is very inexpensive and works quickly. The drowsiness side effect is unlike most drugs with this caution; I can wake quickly and think clearly, no 'drugged' or heavy, fogged thinking."

"I love this medicine as it works amazingly! I take it for nausea, and I never feel even the slightest bit like vomiting. The first 10 or so times that I took it, I went straight to sleep for around 10-12 hours. Now when I take it, I don't get sleepy at all."

"Started taking promethazine at 25 mg 3x daily years ago, then to 4x daily for severe nausea and vomiting from treatments for cancer and couldn't keep food down at all. I was also on strong pain meds before & higher with cancer, oxycodone 30 mg 4x day & morphine 30 mg ER twice daily for having 18 fractured vertebrae (8 herniated, 9 bulging, had 1 ruptured disc repaired), a separate AC joint in the right shoulder, and other broken bones, and leftover bullet & shrapnel fragments in both legs & right foot due to 17 years in the US Army, 3 combat tours. I found that the promethazine didn't always work as well as it should have. At times, I did go over and take a couple more of them per day than what was prescribed. Didn't notice if it helped with pain meds. On them again, cancer returned."

"I am a male, 50 years old, and suffer from anxiety and depression. Out of the blue, I started experiencing severe nausea on a daily basis about 4 weeks ago. No matter what I tried or did, it hardly let up. It made me miserable, and due to the nausea and lack of appetite, I ended up losing about 10 pounds, and I am slim already, so it greatly distressed me. I went to the ER twice, in early April and just recently. On the first trip, they found an infection, treated it, but the nausea still continued afterward. On my second trip, they found NOTHING wrong with me and said I was probably creating it somehow with my mind. They put me on the Promethazine, and for two days now, no nausea."

"I have never heard of this medication being used for anything but nausea and vomiting, but it helps me. I have GERD, acid reflux all the time, and some foods make me sick to my stomach. If it gets too bad, I will take half a 25 mg tablet. If that does not work, I take the other half. It states on the script not to take more than one every 8 hours, so taking two at one time would literally be overdosing my medication and not using it as prescribed. I do not recommend doing that with this medication, it knocks me out with just one half of a dose. Anything over what is prescribed is abusing the prescription. As far as knocking me out, I actually want to sleep when I am nauseated, so I am glad it knocks me out so I do not get sick to my stomach anymore."

"I have been on Phenergan pills since damage from brain surgery years ago. It is a lifesaver! The pills are the only option that works for me. I take it 3-4 times every day. I could not survive without it!"

Promethazine "My wife has taken this medicine in pill form to combat nausea due to chemo, with no adverse side effects. Last week, she was given a dose via her central line. She became psychotic and combative. Phenergan via IV was not good for her. Zofran is an excellent alternative."

"I used to have a stomach of steel. But then I had to get my gallbladder removed. After that, my stomach stays sick, and a lot of times I vomit. It's a horrible feeling. They gave me Zofran, but it doesn't work at all! Then I got promethazine. And it works wonders! I've been on it for years. It's truly an amazing medication. And I have no side effects either. Don't know what I would do without it!"

Promethazine "I absolutely love this medication. I was sick often from chemo, and this helped miracles. I also was having it for sleeping, and when I took this, I would fall asleep, and with cancer, you often just want to sleep and not be sick. This was great. I also had lots of morphine but decided I wanted this more than the morphine. So, to me, this was the better choice, and I was in la-la land, but it was my preferred drug, and to this day I still ask for Phenergan."

"Because of chronic pain due to spina bifida, scoliosis, osteomyelitis, etc., etc. I abused (sorry) aspirin for many years, actually under a doc's supervision because it was better than pain medications, and I destroyed my stomach, even needing blood transfusions. So now, I am off all but one aspirin a day, but need to take antibiotics and blood pressure medicine, and what pain meds the state allows, so by nighttime my stomach is pretty raw. I swear by promethazine as being the only med I have ever taken that completely flatlines nausea and allows me to eat a meal. With promethazine, I gained back the 22 pounds I lost during my battle with MRSA. It does make you sleepy, and some people say it feels a little like a small dose of hydrocodone."

"This drug is HORRIBLE! I've never done crack, but I imagine this is what they experience-after a short period of sleep, I awoke and was crawling out of my skin! I couldn't stay still (even though I was tired and wanted to), I was compelled to walk circles in my room, then jump on the bed and continuously kick my legs in the air and in circles! This drug is TERRIBLE, especially when Zofran is available!"

"Promethazine quickly relieved my upset stomach/nausea due to other medicines (I think, who knows, maybe it was a bad meal or lack of nutrients in my body). I love to have this medication in my cupboard if ever my stomach acts up, or if I have an allergic reaction to something. A full dose makes me very relaxed, and I generally take a nap. A half a dose just gets rid of the ailment, and I can still function in my day. I love this little 'cure'!"

"I have had a lot of surgeries, and I take a lot of medication. When it comes to taking something for an upset stomach, I have found that Phenergan is the best. Immediately after taking Phenergan, I no longer feel nausea."

"Gastroparesis has kicked my butt for years, but this promethazine is a life saver. I only take 1/4 tablet, otherwise I’m knocked out the whole day. Dries me up like a raisin, need to drink a gallon of water, it seems, but without this I’d be in a world of pain. I also wake up starving, which is better than the alternative of feeling sick for days."

Promethazine "This drug is wonderful for stomach viruses, motion sickness, anything involving stomach nausea. The only side effect I have felt is the sedative effect. If you are a nervous flyer, I would recommend 12.5 mg 30 minutes before takeoff."

"Worst experience ever, it gave me insomnia and severe stomach cramps and nausea followed by depression/confusion and scary delusional thoughts. Mood swings, can't breathe while sleeping, mini nightmares, still waking up after a few hours of sleep and struggle to go back. Luckily, my mind is returning to normal, and I have less brain fog now, this pill made me think like I had dementia. Forgot who my family was for a few minutes as well."

"Absolutely the best thing for n/v when taken correctly. I have had Zofran, which for me did absolutely nothing. When I am throwing up, I want to go to sleep. I know it is caustic when given incorrectly into the vein. When mixed properly and administered slowly, it is a wonderful drug for N/V."

"Although I prefer Zofran melt-aways because it melts in your mouth and doesn't require you to drink anything (which can cause vomiting when you're already sick), I love Phenergan! It works longer, and although not as fast, it works better. I use it for nausea and as a sleep aid because of side effects from other medications. It does lower your blood pressure, which is a side effect I don't mind because of my constant high BP and the side effects of the BP meds. It's very effective, and almost every insurance will cover the cost (Zofran is rarely covered). Overall, I don't take it every day, but it's safe for me to say that I've had no bad side effects from prolonged use."

Promethazine "I suffered from Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome; similar to an abdominal migraine. The gastroenterologist prescribed Phenergan suppositories as a prophylaxis. It prevented the onset of the nausea and vomiting. Just knowing it is in my refrigerator should I need it has stopped the cycle."
