"I was prescribed 5 mg prochlorperazine tablets due to a stomach bug, which usually isn’t severe, however, I have an extremely weak immune system, so the nausea caused by the stomach flu is horrible. They seem to work pretty well and almost instantaneously. It seems to last only around 3 hours, but it loses its maximum effectiveness after about 20-30 minutes, and after the 3 hours is over, I felt slightly more nauseous than normal for a few minutes, but it was worth it. Overall, despite how scared I was after reading the other reviews, it worked pretty well."

Prochlorperazine "I went to the doctor with a headache and was given this medicine through IV, and it was the worst day of my life. I literally thought I was about to die. It's been 5 days, and I still don't feel all the way normal. The only thing helping is Ativan."

Prochlorperazine "I was given Compazine for nausea and vomiting when I was having monthly (girls) problems, which almost always included throwing up with pain. Violent spasms, like tetany lockjaw. I did thousands of dollars of damage to my teeth, and my whole jaw was crooked for days after. But doctors all told me it was 'stress,' all in my head, not the meds. One time when I was in the hospital and they gave me Compazine by injection, it started within a few minutes, yup, it was the Compazine. Also, have to be careful with other meds that may contain it. I had Tigan, which worked pretty well, but is no longer made. Last time, the doctor gave me Zofran, but I had a tough time getting the insurance to approve it, as they wanted to give me the cheaper Compazine generics. Be very, very careful, as I have had a few pharmacists tell me some other meds were not related, only to find out that they were. Be sure to do your homework and double, triple check what is in what."

Prochlorperazine "I went to the ER when I was experiencing headaches and vomiting due to a new medication I was put on. The doctors gave me Compazine, Toradol, and Benadryl through my IV. After a few minutes, I experienced the worst feelings of my life. I was thrown into a huge panic attack, I couldn't sit still, my heart rate rose to over 130. I had to stay in the hospital for 5 extra hours just to get my heart rate to return to normal. It took 24+ hours for the initial panic feeling to go away, and now going on 48 hours, my head still feels all foggy and I get dizzy when I stand up for long periods of time. I hope I return to normal soon, and I would not recommend this medication to anyone!!"

"Those who had negative experiences all seem to have received it by IV at the ER. The pills taken as needed for nausea don't give me any side effects. While it's not miraculous, it helps with nausea, headaches, and anxiety."

Prochlorperazine "If you are ever offered a sedative/nausea medication, please be aware that every single one of these recollections and experiences is true. I could compare almost exactly to each and every one of these stories. DO NOT TAKE COMPAZINE. It has been three days and I still do not feel normal."

Prochlorperazine "My doc gave me this medication over 20 years ago for nausea. I ended up having an allergic reaction. I had anxiety, and I couldn’t relax all day. I went to the hospital because of dystonia. Awful day. It also induced OCD, which I have been dealing with ever since. Has this terrible medication triggered OCD in others?"

"I suffered with Meniere’s and was given this medication, prochlorperazine, via my GP. Whilst on the medication, I was fine. The problems began as soon as I stopped! I developed severe anxiety and horrific panic attacks. Prior to taking prochlorperazine, I never had panic attacks. The panic attacks would sometimes last from evening all throughout the night until morning. I’d never known such feelings of terror, dread, fear, etc. I still suffer with mild anxiety, and it’s been more than a year since cessation. Avoid at all costs!"

Prochlorperazine "I was given this awful medication in a migraine cocktail. Within minutes, I was so anxious that I yanked my IV out and ran out of the hospital room. For hours, I couldn't stop moving my legs. It's been 3 days, and I'm still so anxious. I made the pharmacy write in notes that I was allergic to Compazine - prochlorperazine, so this never happens again."

"I usually, but infrequently, take a dose of 2 'Buccastem' tablets (placed high in between my upper lip and gum) containing 1.85 mg of prochlorperazine each in order to treat nausea (as well as migraine, if accompanying nausea). This invariably completely removes my nausea and migraine symptoms, enabling me to get on with my plans for the day without any negative side effects. However, it reliably gives rise in me the pleasant side effects of calmness. I'm surprised to read its catastrophic reports on this forum."

Prochlorperazine "I took this during my first trimester of pregnancy for nausea. It worked wonders for about two days. On the third day, I started to feel strange at work and took a break. My forehead and throat felt like they were tightening. I decided to go home, and about halfway there, I felt my jaw forcing itself to the left while my top teeth forced to the right. I couldn’t control my face or tongue whatsoever. I should have gone to the emergency room, but instead, I decided to call it a day and try to fall asleep. I didn’t fall asleep until 2 a.m. or so when the flexes in my face finally subsided. The strangest experience of my life. My neck and jaw were so sore for days afterwards."

Prochlorperazine "I am an older adult in good health. I originally had dizziness (possibly from a virus or sinus bug), which caused nausea. This medication took away both symptoms within 1-2 hours, and I was able to carry on with my normal activities."

Prochlorperazine "I was fine the first 24 hours after my Benadryl and Compazine injection for a severe migraine, but now, 3 days later, I've been experiencing severe dystonia in my neck, back, and right arm. My hand was clenched in a tight fist all day, and I couldn't move it. Not only that, but Compazine made me hallucinate. I was hearing and seeing things and thinking very negative thoughts. Never, ever will I take this medication again."

Prochlorperazine "Reading the effects some folks have had brings me right back to 1993. I was 2 months pregnant with my son, who is now 23. I was vomiting so badly and was given Compazine as a suppository. It worked wonders for the first 2 days. My 3rd day was a trip to HELL! I was on the phone with my mom, and my words started slurring. I then started having uncontrollable muscle spasms in my face. My upper and lower jaw started moving in opposite directions so severely that I had to hold my face in place, screaming in pain! My husband had to rush me to the ER in the middle of a snowstorm. It was a horrific experience, and I cannot believe that this drug still exists! I was told that Compazine is used as a component in other drugs, BEWARE!"

Prochlorperazine "26 years ago, I was prescribed this for vomiting, and soon after I took it at home, I had a stroke (at 22 years old). You can imagine the trauma I went through. I was home alone with my infant when it happened. I lost all control of the right side of my body. I could barely speak. I got to a phone in the house (no cellphone back then, 26 years ago) and called my sister, who lived closest to me. She couldn’t make out what I was saying until I started crying, then she realized I was in danger, so she rushed over and got me to the nearby hospital. By that time, I was also beginning to swallow my tongue. I thought I was gonna die. I apparently passed out, and when I came to, I was hooked up to things. I was feeling much better from whatever they did for me and had told me I had a stroke. Because of how young I was, there wasn’t too much permanent damage. The right side of my face is still slightly lower or droopy than the other side from the incident, but my brain is okay. Scary!"

Prochlorperazine "I was given this medication to help with the side effects of chemo and radiation, and it was okay the first day, but as the days went on, I began to feel irritated, groggy, and extremely restless, but I was really tired, like super tired. It kept me so drained that I slept for 22 hours! Almost all the side effects mentioned above (or below), I experienced them too. I will never take this again! I'd rather be nauseous!"

"Went to the ER for vomiting. They gave me this drug. It made me feel suicidal and more anxious than I ever have. I ended up having to leave AMA because they weren’t listening to me. I hope it wears off completely, quickly. I’m terrified it won’t. Please don’t let them give you this medication. It is awful!!!"

Prochlorperazine "I was given this through an IV in the ER. I had terrible nausea, and Zofran didn't touch it. Even though Compazine did take my nausea away, it left me incredibly groggy yet restless. I spent the entire rest of the day in a haze. I've never abused drugs, but I would imagine this is how you would feel when coming off of some sort of high, yet it lasts all day long. I kept feeling angry and anxious as well. I would much rather have nausea and will never take this medicine again!"

Prochlorperazine "Had this for nausea. The reaction to it was delayed, so it took a long time to figure out what was causing the violent reactions. I was finally told it was all psychosomatic, aka all in my head! Would get muscle spasms started in the left arm, then traveled to my face and jaw. If I could catch it fast enough, I could put a towel between my teeth, but did thousands of dollars of damage with breaking off teeth! After it subsided, my whole face looked crooked, and my jaw did not line up right for days. Highly dangerous stuff."

Prochlorperazine "I was given this drug in the ER for nausea and a bad headache. The nurse gave me this drug but said it was a Benadryl 'cocktail.' Immediately when I felt it pushed through the IV, my skin began to burn, and I started to have a choking sensation. Honest to goodness, I felt like I was going to die. I started to have the worst panic attack of my life. The heart monitor I was hooked up to started beeping like crazy, and my blood pressure shot through the roof. I was so scared because I drove myself to the ER. I felt like I was losing my freaking mind on this drug. The only thing the doctor on call said to me was, 'Well, I guess you are allergic to Compazine.' I was like, YOU THINK!! The next day, they let me drive myself home.... To this day, I have no memory of how I made it home, but I'm so thankful I made it safely. Word of caution, please be careful if you are ever given this drug. I feel like I have PTSD from that terrible night in the ER because of it. It's a HORRIBLE drug."

Prochlorperazine "I feel for all of you very much. All of those bad experiences, I also had. Plus, doctors and nurses don't seem to care, at least most don't. About 13 years ago, I went to the ER for nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. I didn't feel well when I went in. As soon as they put Compazine in my IV, I felt terrible panic, restlessness, anxiety. I could not sit, lay down, or stay in one place for more than 5 minutes. I pulled my IV out and started running to my friend. I thought maybe I had a stroke. I didn't know. My friend tried to talk to the doctors. I was outside, I couldn't do anything to feel any better. I waited to die. I was afraid I would hurt someone. I was one of the top weightlifters in the world. I started banging my head as hard as I could on the concrete wall. Then I went back in the hospital bleeding. I thought then the doctors would do something to help me. They called the police, my friend got me home. I was worse. I took some Xanax. I still have anxiety from that experience."

Prochlorperazine "I was on this thread a while ago to see if people had a similar experience, and I’m just now deciding to post because I remember how horrible it was. I went into the ER with pancreatitis, and instead of promethazine, they decided to do Compazine. I wish I could go back in time and stop the nurse from administering it. They pushed it with IV dilaudid, so it took a bit for me to feel the negative effects, but long story short: crippling anxiety, sweats, uncontrolled movement (dystonia), insomnia, the list goes on. Didn’t sleep for 56 hours, and the only thing that even helped a little was walking. I walked that entire time. This medication is the worst."

Prochlorperazine "I’m honestly shocked this drug is still allowed to be administered. I have several chronic illnesses, including mitochondrial disease, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, dysautonomia, gastroparesis, migraines, and more. Four years ago, at 14, I was taken to the emergency room with a severe headache along with nausea and stroke-like symptoms. I was given the migraine cocktail that included Compazine. I immediately felt a rush of adrenaline accompanied by the worst restless leg/body/burning sensation I’ve ever felt. I remember wanting to literally crawl out of my skin. I felt as though I was going crazy. I have been septic and close to death many times, but genuinely cannot think of a more uncomfortable experience than being on this medication. It took 50 mg of IV Benadryl + 3 mg of IV Ativan to get me to finally calm down."

Prochlorperazine "I have been suffering with gastroparesis for years, and at one point, ended up in the emergency room because I was so intensely nauseated and dehydrated. Was given Compazine in IV solution, which worked wonderfully to stop the nausea. The doctor sent me home with Compazine pills, and they weren't as effective."

Prochlorperazine "I went to the ER for stomach pains and nausea. I am allergic to so many pain medicines that there is little I can take. They gave me Compazine, and as they put it in my IV, they told me it could cause severe anxiety in some people. Well, I can tell you now, it was horrific. I have had one major panic attack in my life, and this was 20 times worse. I started pulling off my clothes and ripped the IV out. They had to give me a big dose of Benadryl to 'reverse' the effects. Please, please think twice and consider other choices before taking this!"
