For Bladder Infection "Absolutely awful experience with this medicine. I’m 14 weeks pregnant and was prescribed it for a mild bladder infection. About an hour after taking it, my stomach started to turn. Then, for the next three hours, I was in excruciating pain comparable to labor pains. It felt like I was trying to digest a tennis ball. Lots of angry noises from my stomach, six visits to the bathroom over the course of those three hours. Severe cramping, dry heaving, chills, and trembling. No way will I take another pill. It wiped out my entire digestive system and left me feeling extremely depleted."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Well, like so many others, I have to say I had extreme nausea for 3 days while taking this, followed by a day of vomiting. I called my GP, who told me to stop it immediately. I have never had a reaction to antibiotics before. On the other hand, after taking just 3 doses on the first day, the burning pain and need to urinate was gone! I also took 400 mg ibuprofen for the flank pain. So yes, it did work very fast at targeting my UTI symptoms, which was great, but it left me lethargic, feeling terribly sick and throwing up after 3 days of doses. Worth trying if you are experiencing a severe UTI, but not as a first try!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I took this medicine to treat a UTI. Although it did cure the UTI, this drug made me so nauseous that I threw up for a week straight. It also made me extremely fatigued. If you have to take this drug, make sure to take it with plenty of food (and avoid food about two hours after taking it). Hope this helps!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "Terrible medicine. Took it first day as prescribed with food. Within a couple of hours, I was down and out. Fever, aches, pains, horrible nausea, vomiting. Trying to avoid going to the ER but might end up there if it doesn't wear off soon. Never taking it again."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "First dose: weakness, fatigue, mild nausea, headache. Second dose: weakness, fatigue, fever, moderate nausea, chills. Third dose: EXTREME nausea, vomiting, fever, weakness, chills and hot flashes, chest pain, diarrhea, literally felt like I was going to die! Finally realized it was the medicine after the third dose. More intense side effects immediately stopped when I didn’t take the next dose, but it took me three days to recover from the loss of fluids and feeling weak. My doctor switched me to a different med and felt literally no side effects. Will never be taking this ever again no matter how many UTIs I get in the future."

For Bladder Infection "I started taking this last Friday, and I started immediately feeling sick. I thought it was just that I had to get used to it. Today is the worst day on it I have had, and it is only my 4th pill. I vomited today about an hour and a half after taking this medication. I was on it for a bladder infection. NEVER again. I have never felt this bad on any medication ever. Symptoms are like severe pregnancy symptoms, and to be honest, I REALLY was starting to believe that I was pregnant again, with my 5th child!!! I have been so paranoid, and now after reading this and finding out I'm not the only one experiencing flu/pregnancy symptoms, I feel a lot better LOL!!!!! My mind can calm down now. But seriously, it feels like 'morning sickness' all day long. :0/"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Extreme drowsiness. Never felt quite this drowsy from taking a medication. I’m vomiting every hour or so, I feel so sick, I don’t even want to leave my bed. It seems to be working for my UTI, however, so that’s good. Maybe it’s meant to flush your system out, which is why most people puke? Who knows."

For Bladder Infection "After the 2nd day of taking this medicine, I became feverish and was shaking terribly, and the muscles in my legs and arms were so weak. I couldn't stand on my own two feet, and I am an avid walker. I was vomiting and couldn't eat. I took it for 4 days, and by then I was totally frozen - couldn't move at all. The pain in my body was horrifying. I thought I was a goner. I knew I was getting dehydrated. I tried to drink enough water. I finally stopped the meds. Three days later, I took a trip to the hospital in an ambulance because I couldn't stand, my vision had gone horribly wrong. I got to the hospital, and they said it was the side effects from the meds. All they did was give me fluids and a bag of antibiotics, and then sent me home, and today, 6 days later, I'm still having trouble standing on my feet. Not happy."

For Urinary Tract Infection "After taking two capsules, I woke up the next morning drenched in sweat, followed by severe chills and high fever (103 to 104). With each dose, my symptoms multiplied: nauseous, vomiting, severe body aches, swollen knee and hand joints, headaches, diarrhea, swollen and painful neck. After nine doses, my doctor instructed me to stop taking the medicine, and I started improving. I am left with night sweats and lack of appetite."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This antibiotic was complete hell. I took the first dose, within 2 hours, I was dry heaving with an overall sick feeling. Before bed, I took the second dose, woke up in the middle of the night with fever, chills, chest pain, pain when breathing, and basically every flu-like symptom. I called my doctor, and he saw me right away and did every test under the sun. I had a WBC count of over 20,000! I was almost hospitalized and ended up having to get a shot of an antibiotic in my butt and was switched to Cipro. Never again! Cipro from now on for me."

For Bladder Infection "Had this antibiotic twice, both times for a UTI. First time for 7 days, only side effect was colored urine, cleared up the infection. Just came off it for the second time, this time a 3-day course, twice a day. Side effects were more prominent this time, had exhaustion a few hours after the first tablet, had a 14-hour sleep the same day due to the extreme tiredness. Third day woke up feeling extremely nauseous with a green tinge to my skin and proceeded to vomit numerous times, followed by a sore throat and pain when swallowing for the rest of the day. Now I'm off them, the only remaining side effect is the urine color. Not sure if the UTI is gone, but symptoms have settled down."

For Bladder Infection "I took 100 mg at 12 noon with food. By 4 pm, I was in bed, chills like I had never had before. The ache resembled someone sitting on my chest and pulling a belt tight. I felt sick, and the pain was awful. I took the second one at 10 pm, and four hours later, the effects were so bad. I was throwing up and gagging when I breathed in. The doctor actually came out to me and changed the antibiotics. It took around three days for symptoms to go away. I now feel I have no energy. The infection has cleared up, so that is a relief, but I won't be taking this medication ever again."

For Urinary Tract Infection "After taking two nitrofurantoin pills as directed, I woke up the following morning coughing, shortness of breath, and vomiting. I have seen another doctor, and she had to put me on steroids, penicillin, and cough syrup. This drug caused nitrofurantoin-induced lung disease. Three days after taking that pill, I'm still very sick. If it continues, I will have no choice but to get to a hospital. I truly believe this pill is awful and needs to be removed from the market."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "This has been the worst experience I've had with medication. Nausea, vomiting, and headaches, and I'm only 2 days in. I never want to take this again. Honestly, I would rather pay more for something that has fewer side effects."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Terrible experience with this medication. I'm 9 weeks pregnant, and this medicine made my nausea 20x worse! The 3 days I took this medicine, it was like I had a stomach virus, throwing up all day. Also, still have a pounding headache that will not go away! Never again."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was feeling off, so I went to the doctor, and they took a stool sample, blood, urine, everything besides imaging, and found all normal but a UTI. I was so shocked I had no idea I had a UTI. I was prescribed this, and I am on day 2.5, and yesterday I felt like vomiting and passing out. Woke up at 5:30, couldn't sleep, and felt icky again. Took another pill (thinking my icky feeling was the UTI) and went to Walmart hours later. In Walmart, I felt the same way, going to pass out and throw up, worst anxiety ever. I do not recommend this to anyone. So I got home and started reading side effects, and it says there are cases that the pill can kill you and be fatal with no warning signs. Sorry, and WHAT?!? And all this for a UTI that I had no symptoms of, um, NO!!!! Be safe out there. Big pharmaceuticals don't care about us! That's like saying, hey, shoot yourself in rare cases people die. Come on, people!!! Very upset right now."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Avoid this medication at all costs! Although it may not cause side effects for some, I was one of the many unlucky ones who experienced terrible problems. I have never had a problem with any antibiotics except sulfa drugs before, but this medication left me nauseated, vomiting, dealing with chills for hours, shaking so hard I couldn't move, and with a terrible headache. I haven't taken a dose in 12 hours (with my doctor's suggestion), and the headache is just now going away. It took about 8 hours for the shaking to stop. At one point, it was so bad that I thought I was going to have to go to the ER. I was only two doses in as well. This was worse than the sulfa reaction I had!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "Do not take this medication. I feel as if I have poisoned myself. I was prescribed to take one pill, twice a day, for 5 days. After the 2nd dose, I began vomiting and had an awful pounding headache. I called the doctor to ask if I could be given something else, and he said no and to continue taking the medication. After the 3rd and 4th dose, I am not taking it anymore. I feel nauseated constantly, my body aches, and I feel like I am sick, and the worst part is my chest hurts really bad. I have a constant pain/pressure in the center of my chest, and if I laugh or cough, it feels like my entire chest cavity hurts. I have read that is one of the more serious side effects and it's freaking me out. How can an antibiotic make your chest hurt like that?"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was given nitrofurantoin, as two previous antibiotics hadn't helped to shift my kidney infection. I take 4 a day for 7 days, and I'm halfway through my suggested dose. I have improved being on this medication, but I can't feel the benefits, as the nausea, vomiting, and tiredness are too severe to notice the change. I feel constantly sick and have occasional vomiting and extreme tiredness, I think it's the side effects of the tablets. I have barely been out of bed for a week. I hope to pick up soon."

For Urinary Tract Infection "My first day of being prescribed the medicine, I thought everything would be okay. I took my first pill at 6 p.m. at night when I finally got home from work, everything seemed fine. However, at 4:30 a.m., I started getting serious abdominal pain and couldn't go to sleep. I started throwing up and had diarrhea, my body was so weak that I started crawling on the floor. This has to be the worst pain ever, and I refuse to take it again!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "DO NOT TAKE nitrofurantoin, especially if you have colitis or stomach issues! Avoid like the plague. Nearly killed me. Had UTI but also have colitis. Practicing nurse prescribed it. 100g x 2 daily for 7 days. 1st dose cleared the UTI. 2nd dose hell began. Thinking it was not related, carried on. Started Monday. By Thursday, was in A&E on 2 drips, anti-sickness and electrolytes. 4 days of violent shakes. Vomiting. Hot and cold flashes. Can't drink water. Can't eat food. Tongue white as snow. Sleeping all day. Back pain. Brain fog. Nails felt like they were detaching from beds. Soiling myself. Hospital doctor surprised this was prescribed when I had colitis. Spent half a day in hospital. Couldn't work for a week. Blew my guts out. It's Sunday and I stopped Thursday. Still weak. Sleeping all day. Muscles 'flipping' in my thigh. Head still fuzzy. Still disoriented. DO NOT TAKE ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE IBD. Worst medication. I am a 54-year-old lady."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "I had gone to the ER in crippling pain, I could hardly walk, my UTI was so bad. I was prescribed Macrobid, and after the first dose, I had some nausea and had vomited a couple of times due to not eating first. I started taking it right after a meal, and after the third dose, my pain was gone, my urine went back to a normal color with no terrible odor. I’m allergic to almost every antibiotic I’ve ever taken since I was little, but I had little to no reaction with this one. It was overall a good experience and would be happy to take it again if needed."

For Bladder Infection "This is the worst drug that I have ever taken! I was so sick that I ended up going to the ER. I thought I had COVID, but was tested and I didn't have it. I had a raging headache, couldn't breathe due to congestion in my lungs. I was so sick to my stomach and felt like I had to vomit but couldn't. My whole body was aching like the worst flu I could ever imagine. My oxygen level went down to 70, which was scary for me because it is usually 95. What is in this drug that causes such a reaction? I have heard that it has sulfa in it. I would never take this drug again!"
