Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "The Macrobid did work for the UTI, but my, oh my, have I been having a bad time. I have been so, so nauseous since my first dose. I have actually vomited from the nausea. Severe diarrhea as well. It doesn't seem to matter what food I take it with. I can barely eat, I have no appetite and feel horrendous. I have also developed serious neck pain and aches in my arms, which can only be attributed to this drug as nothing else in my life has changed. I won't be taking this medication again, if I can help it. This has been the longest week of my life."

For Bladder Infection "I was put on a 3-day course of nitrofurantoin in April and only managed to take 3 of the 6 pills due to vomiting and feeling like I had the flu. I was put on this again recently for 7 days and spent most of the time out of work due to nitrofurantoin side effects, banging migraine on the first day and after that came the excruciating stomach pains, nausea and vomiting, extreme weakness and fatigue, cold sweats, and general malaise. I did manage to fight through the 7 days - the side effects became less manageable as the days went by, though. I congratulate anyone who gets through a week's course and is still able to go to work, as this is the second time I've been off of work due to this medication."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "This is the second time I've been prescribed this medication. I don't recall any side effects (other than the freaky urine color!). But this time, I feel like I'm about to vomit... and it's only been about 4.5 hours since I started this medicine."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I’m 56 years old and have never had a problem with antibiotics. Prescribed Macrobid 2x a day for 10 days as I had my third UTI in five months. UTI symptoms quickly vanished, BUT by day 5 I couldn’t think, had zero appetite, headaches, and a sore throat - assumed virus. Day 8, my face and neck began to swell, sudden SEVERE back pain, fever, teeth chattering, vomiting - saw the doctor, test showed kidney function off/dehydration, though I constantly had fluids. 3 days off - still sore throat, tired, but my head is clear and energy/appetite returning. Another kidney function test next week. PS this is NOT only for people with allergic reactions - never again!"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Attended emergency for statin use-related UTI. Started medication the same day and the next morning vomited. I took the next prescribed dose and 2 hours later could not take a deep breath, had a very tight, heavy chest, and I thought I was having a heart attack. By the time for my next dose, I had a headache, muscle pain which kept moving, felt sweaty and feverish. The next dose created more of the same, with increased labored breathing. I had never felt so weak or nauseated. Sleep was intermittent and weird dreams. I did not continue, called my GP and stopped immediately. I am a 60-year-old woman and this is the most horrible drug I have ever been prescribed."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I've had UTIs before that have been treated with Cipro with no side effects. This last infection was pretty bad, and the physician I saw prescribed Macrodantin, which I had never used. The first dose gave me a severe headache, and then the second dose put me almost under. The leg cramps were so severe my husband wanted to take me to the emergency room. They were so painful and came so often until I was scared. I had to call in sick from work because they kept coming, and I threw up and was very fatigued. I drank tonic water and orange juice, which helped the cramps, so I'm calling my physician for Cipro first thing in the morning, and I'll list this medication as an allergy from now on. The side effects were horrible and outweighed the benefits."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This medication made me so sick for the whole 7 days of taking it. I woke up at 2 a.m. every night nauseous and would throw up until I had nothing left to throw up all the way until noon the next day. You have to eat something with it, so trying to force-feed myself while feeling nauseous was horrible. My UTI was really painful and bad, so I put up with it. Worst medication I have ever taken."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "Prescribed Macrobid 100 mg for bladder infection. Took the first dose at 5 pm after a full meal (on the advice of my doctor who warned slight stomach irritation). Around 2 am, I woke up vomiting yellow bile, which lasted for several hours. I was shaking and sweating and couldn't even keep water down. I'm on my fourth dose and symptoms are subsiding. I feel like I'm going to vomit, have a headache, and am extremely dizzy. Please be careful when taking this, it's like a flu in pill form!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I am a healthy, happy, energetic 77-year-old. I was prescribed nitrofurantoin for cystitis, two 100 mg tablets daily for 7 days. The 2nd day, I experienced nausea, headache, and extreme fatigue. By the 3rd day, I also experienced vomiting, tingling in my fingers, irritability, stomach pain, and fullness and pressure in my head. I stopped taking the drug after 3 1/2 days and started on amoxicillin. The nausea and tingling stopped 1 1/2 days after stopping the nitrofurantoin, but the headache, pressure, and extreme fatigue continued for another 15 days. My doctor said that the drug is not known to cause these symptoms. I have never researched a drug or written any review, but felt compelled to let people know that this drug does cause all these symptoms and more. Judging from the number of reviews, it would seem that these are not rare occurrences. Perhaps the pharmaceutical companies are not being completely honest about the side effects this drug causes and the multitude of people that are affected."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I've had a few UTIs in my life, but never treated with nitrofurantoin, and never again. My first dosage was Thursday p.m., and by Saturday evening, I pretty much wanted to die. Horrible stomach pain/cramps, headache, drowsy, malaise, and I kept on taking it. It's now Thursday, and I woke up to a pounding headache and vomiting. Today was my last round, which I'm not taking. The UTI was way easier to deal with than this experience."

For Bladder Infection "I had a bladder infection for the first time in my life and was prescribed this medication. Worst experience of my life! Immediately upon taking this medication (I took food with it, which is recommended), I started experiencing a horrible panic attack, followed by wheezing and coughing. But that wasn't the worst of it: I began feeling nauseous and started vomiting. I threw up all the food I had eaten! I felt like I had a severe case of food poisoning! I had to stay in bed all day in case I vomited again. Thankfully I didn't, and I must admit that my UTI symptoms disappeared after that first pill, but never again will I take this medication. I hope this helped."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Scary experience. I started to get very ill a few hours after starting the medication, nausea, headache, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. Two days later, a GP told me I may have the flu. I went home, went to bed. So weak, low fever, chills, could not get warm, still vomiting, horrendous headache. A few days feeling the same, I noticed a rash on my body. Went to the emergency department by ambulance. The antibiotic had caused acute liver failure. I had been on day five of a seven-day course. Lucky enough, the doctor in the hospital put the connection together, and the medication was stopped. It took a few months to recover from the fatigue, especially, but I'm lucky to be alive also. Another few days at home alone, I would probably have passed out. I was delirious most days, so they were blurry and confusing. No more Macrodantin for me. Even have an emergency bracelet if I need to travel outside Ireland."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Macrobid immediately helps get rid of my UTIs, and I am prone to very bad ones because of some preexisting conditions. Once on a trip, I happened to luckily have a spare one floating around in my toiletries that I took when I realized that I had developed a UTI, and, in spite of not having a full regime, it still got rid of it. HOWEVER, I do have an EXTREME reaction to Macrobid. It gives me the most EXCRUCIATING body pains a couple of hours after taking it. The best way that I can describe it is like acid in my veins or my nerves spasming nonstop. I vomit, cry, and can't even stand, bend, or roll over in bed without exacerbating the pain, making me nonfunctional. After about 2 hours, it goes away, but it is awful until then."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Was diagnosed with a kidney infection last Friday and was prescribed Macrobid by the doctor...100 mg four times a day. I have to say the side effects aren't great... I had vomiting on the Saturday evening and banging headaches the entire time I was taking them, however, these eased with paracetamol, and the main thing is the kidney infection felt a lot, lot better after 2 days. It's not the perfect drug, but it's not horrendous."

For Urinary Tract Infection "After eating food, I took one dose. Within a few hours, forced to bed, chills, projectile vomiting, and horrible diarrhea. Back to bed, chills continued, then horrible abdomen pains so bad, I wished to die. So not me. It was impossible to move. By morning, severe headache which lasted many days, pains in neck and Achilles tendon lasting for days. Unable to eat, slept 12 hours daily for a week. Checking online, I read a report stating these meds should never be given to a woman over age 50."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I took 3 doses of Macrobid for a UTI and started feeling awful a few hours after the 3rd dose. I had a fever of 101, body aches, chills, sweats, nausea, vomiting, couldn’t hold down any food. The next day, I was delirious, could barely form a sentence, so weak I couldn’t sit up. My hubby was so worried he called 911. They tested my blood to make sure the infection hadn’t gone to my kidneys — kidneys were fine. My urine was all clear. They gave me IV fluids, so I felt better. The next day, sick as a dog again. Home healthcare doc came. They ran a flu swab test — negative. They said if not better tomorrow, get admitted to the hospital for a full workup. They all told me to complete the 5-day Macrobid. I didn’t take it today because I would have thrown it up. Now that I am reading all these reviews, I am thankful I stopped!"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Horrible side effects! Oh my goodness. Just 2 days on this and I had to give it up. I had to hold onto the walls when walking, I was so dizzy. I also felt like I was going to pass out and vomit at the same time, and felt hot like I had a fever. Never again. The doctor then put me on cephalexin (Keflex brand), and no side effects except a little tiredness. P.S. D-mannose is amazing at preventing UTIs. Better than antibiotics. I had just stopped taking it."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "The doctor diagnosed me with a mild UTI yesterday and prescribed Macrobid. A few hours after taking it, I felt my brain wasn't fully functioning, very slow. After that, I was beginning to feel more and more nauseous, which ended up in full-blown violent vomiting, which was continuous for hours. Now it's the next day, and I have heart palpitations, a bursting headache, extreme tiredness, still can't hold anything down. I've never been this sick from any other antibiotic, and I only took 1 dose. The doctor prescribed me different antibiotics, I couldn't continue the Macrobid with these abnormal side effects. I never write reviews but thought to share my experience this time because of the severe side effects this medicine can have. It might work great for some people, but not for me."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "This is the worst medication I have ever taken. It was very effective in eliminating my UTI, but I had a severe adverse reaction to it. I felt extremely nauseated, couldn't eat, and vomited when I got out of bed. Then I started to have a dry cough and difficulty breathing. I also had a fever, night sweats, and chills. I was worried it was the flu or a kidney infection. I called my doctor and she told me to stop taking it, and all of my symptoms went away. I have never felt so ill while taking medication in my life. I didn't know I was allergic to it, but I'll avoid it at all costs from now on. I can't believe they give this to pregnant women."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Never had a UTI before, but I heard it was awful. When I got it, I didn't notice symptoms until 2 days later. Lots of blood in my urine, so I went to a minute clinic and was prescribed nitrofurantoin. After the 3rd day, all symptoms were gone. The side effects were bad: nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. I think maybe the strength was too high, but the urinary tract infection is gone, so that's all I care about."

For Urinary Tract Infection "UTI: I started taking this terrible nitrofurantoin tablet for a UTI. It was prescribed by a nurse at my surgery, as there was no appointment with a doctor available. I’ve never felt so ill in my entire life. The side effects started off with the worst pulsating headache I’ve ever had. No paracetamol or ibuprofen would get rid of it. Then I started to get really bad aching in my lower back and backs of my legs to the point I could hardly walk. The painful headache was so bad, and then I started to feel really dizzy and nauseous, and then the vomiting started. This has all happened in the space of three days, and I’m not feeling any better. I’ve stopped taking them, as no one should have to go through this nightmare!!"
