For Birth Control "So, I have had the Skyla for a year and a few weeks. I have an appointment today, 10/11/2017, for an annual check-up, and I am getting it removed. The cramps are horrible, and on top of that, I get a UTI all the time due to the Skyla. About the only thing good that has come out of this birth control is the fact that I go every three months and do not have a period. I gained weight with this and also got diagnosed with anxiety and depression. My doctor is not sure if it's because of this or my surgery, but I am more than thinking it has to do with this birth control. So I shall see. Also, my sex drive has gone down a lot compared to where it was."

For Birth Control "My OB suggested Skyla for me after Mononessa threw me into some depression and fatigue around August 2016 (exactly a year, now). Had no issues up until the last couple of months of having it. Sure, the painful acne started up quickly: My face has been a mess of grease no matter how many times I washed it, what soap I used, etc. I was willing to put up with the skin issues if that meant I was covered. But the last couple of periods have lasted nearly two weeks, have had more cramps, the acne is getting much worse and starting to show up on more of my body! I'm not going to pay $50 for skincare meds either. So, I'm not going to look on the bright side anymore and get it removed this week if I can."

For Birth Control "I started Skyla after being on Enskyce for about a year and a half with no problems; I just didn't want to take a pill every day. Without birth control, I have fairly heavy periods, chronic migraines, and moderate acne; with Enskyce, I had almost no acne, only migraines around my period, and mild to moderate periods. After a year with Skyla, I had to get it taken out because I became very depressed and anxious, my migraines were only around my period but became 100 times worse, and my skin became terrible with hormonal acne all around my chin and cheeks. My sex drive also decreased a lot, which, combined with my worsened mood, became a hindrance on my relationship with my boyfriend. I would also have random light cramps caused by the IUD even after a year and experienced constant spotting up until the 7th or 8th month. I finally got fed up and had it taken out about a week ago, and I immediately started feeling better overall and have gone back onto Enskyce with no problems so far."

For Birth Control "I had the Skyla inserted 1.5 months ago. That process was painless-I was put under total sedation and don't remember a thing. So I switched from the pill to Skyla so I wouldn't have to go to the pharmacy every month and deal with the copay, as well as remembering to take that dang pill at the same time every day. So, got the thing inserted, everything fine except for the fact I have been getting heavy periods that last more than 10 days at a time for 2 times a month (oh yeah, I definitely can't get pregnant now because I don't want to have sex). I have had a slight change in moodiness (uncontrollable anger/sadness), and my shoulders and lower back are now covered in acne! Gyno says to wait 3 months for side effects to wear off."

For Birth Control "I had the Mirena IUD put in after I had my first son in 2011. After about one year of having it, I had it taken out because of the cramping and losing so much hair. Then I had my second son in June of 2014 and had the Skyla put in a couple of months later. And almost every month since then, I have gotten a yeast infection. I have never had problems down there until I got this birth control. About three weeks ago, I got a severe pelvic infection and have been in so much pain for the past three weeks, and antibiotics were not even working! I had it removed three days ago, and it's slowly getting better. I've been having a lot of anxiety, panic attacks, and would get depressed, but never thought it was from this birth control till I saw the other comments. I would not recommend it for anyone."

For Birth Control "I'm 23, no kids. Had Jaydess (the Canadian name for Skyla) inserted about 6 weeks ago, and so far so good! I decided I wanted to get off birth control pills because I suspected they were causing depression and anxiety (they were!). The insertion was really painful, but I later learned my uterus was '8/10 on the difficulty scale,' so I'll accept that. I had light spotting/bleeding almost every day for 5 weeks, but it stopped completely last week. The bleeding was 90% less than what I'm used to for my period. I had my checkup today, and everything looks good! My verdict is if the pill isn't bothering you, it's probably not worth the pain and money. But if you're like me, and have had issues, I highly recommend trying Skyla/Jaydess."

For Birth Control "After almost two years of agony, I finally got my IUD taken out. I had this IUD in after the birth of my second son. My experience was horrific, to say the least. I was irritable, moody, had fits of rage, depression, ZERO sex drive. I also experienced a deformity of my body, my hips and legs got skinnier while my stomach, arms, and face gained weight. Wrinkles and dry skin, too. I had joint pain, back pain, and frequent urination. I felt as if I stayed pregnant for all these years. Anyway, I had it taken out two months ago, and my pain has diminished, my mood is better, and my stomach is flat again. Unfortunately, my period is now irregular, and I am pretty sure I am not ovulating. My husband and I want more children, and now I am worried my fertility has been affected! I am going crazy trying to find supplements to balance my hormones again. I warn you, do NOT get this IUD or any hormonal birth control, especially if you are not done having children. This product should be against the law."

For Birth Control "A few days after getting it inserted, I experienced the worst sharp pains on my side. The pains only lasted for a couple of days. I've experienced mood swings, depression, low sex drive, and acne. My biggest side effect has been excessive weight gain. I have gained 17 lbs, and every week I seem to gain more. I actively go to the gym and watch what I eat. I even started taking supplements to assist with losing weight, and nothing works. I recently went to get an InBody test done that checks your BMI and all other measurements, and I learned that the amount of fat around my organs is twice what it's supposed to be. While consulting with the nutritionist, he told me it is because of a hormone imbalance. Women produce testosterone, and my levels are down because of bad hormones, which is why I'm having trouble with losing weight. All this time I've been struggling, my body has been getting worse. Quick to say I'm getting my Skyla out tomorrow in hopes that I can get my body healthy again."

For Birth Control "So I have had Skyla in since August 16th, 2016. I had to get my last one replaced because I didn't take to the first one I had. My period lasted 2 months, it was heavy and gross. My second one now has stopped. I have had my period steady since August. It's now Nov 24 and I don't know what to do. Sometimes it's super heavy, or sometimes it's light, but still very much so there. Random and painful cramping. This birth control is depressing, but it's a good birth control mainly because you can't have sex because you're on your period (unless you're into that). Getting it taken out was not horrible, getting my second one back in wasn't bad, just made me sick. Overall, I hate this birth control, to be honest. No woman likes bleeding for more than a week."

For Birth Control "I got the Skyla inserted three weeks before I got married (virgin until then). Putting in Skyla was fast, but easily the most painful experience of my entire life. It sounds like someone is shooting a rubber band gun, and it feels like someone has shot your uterus. The cramps were the worst cramps I have had in my entire life-I couldn't focus, I was in tears-really the most painful experience ever. The cramping pain and bleeding didn't stop for about two months, and periods are still extremely painful. I have bad mood swings, I get depressed all the time, and my libido is definitely decreased. My husband can also feel the wires sometimes, and it's painful to him. I'm not pregnant, so it works... but I'm not sure it's worth the side effects."

For Birth Control "I have tried the pill and Depo. I didn't mind the pill, except I had to take it every day, and it made my boobs grow, which I hated. I HATED Depo because it made me depressed and fat. Just got Skyla inserted yesterday. I like the idea of an IUD because I get to keep it for 3 years. The insertion process was not bad at all, honest to God. I didn't even know my gyno put it in. However, 10 minutes later, I fainted in the waiting room, which I am told is a normal reaction. They had to keep me until I regained color and was coherent. The cramps yesterday were AWFUL. Today I feel great, minimal cramps, and I am able to move around just fine. Can't wait to continue Skyla for the next three years!"

For Birth Control "I've had Skyla for about 5 months and have mixed feelings about it. The insertion wasn't that big of a deal (uncomfortable but tolerable), but it's the side effects I've been having issues with. First of all, I bled every day for the first two months along with horrible cramps. It's gotten better since, but I still spot a lot. I'm a person who has always had strong reactions to hormonal bc, and I am starting to notice mood swings and an overall more sad mood than normal. I don't know if this is bc of Skyla, but it probably is because it's not like me to feel like this. I also have lost about 15 pounds and know I have an ovarian cyst, which I never had before. I'm considering getting it out even though it's nice to not take a daily pill."

For Birth Control "I had mine in for two months. I got the worst acne and cramps of my life. It did what it said it would do, though... protect me against pregnancy. I took it out still, though, because the mood swings and acne were horrible. I was on my period for a month, and it made me very depressed."

For Birth Control "I got Skyla about 3 months after I had my daughter. Insertion was really easy, no pain at all, and was really quick. Overall, it did what it was supposed to do. My periods stopped completely at about 3 months in. The negatives for me are that I gained about 30-40 lbs in a matter of months. Before long, I was going to the gym about 5 days a week and ate really good... didn’t lose but 5 lbs, and I was strict about my regime for about 4 months with no change. I also feel it gave me depression, but it was slow going, however, it took me a long time to figure out that I was even depressed and to pinpoint why. I see a doc regularly for anxiety medicine... so I know my body pretty well, and this was the reason for it. I will be trying the Paraguard next as it has no hormones. I feel I’m very sensitive to hormone issues because I’ve dealt with hormonal cystic acne for many years and still do today, but it’s not nearly as bad as it was before I had my daughter. Hope this helps!"

For Birth Control "PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE: - Insertion hurt horribly like most people say - Intense cramping for the first 2 months - Period gone but spotting every 2 weeks that lasts 7 - 9 days, not enough for a tampon but enough to ruin all your panties - Bloating, hunger, acne, weight fluctuation, etc. all true - Cramping randomly and intensely 4 - 5 times per week EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE: - Irritability and mood swings OFF THE CHARTS - Feeling of constant weight on chest, depression, anxiety - Trouble sleeping, insomnia, worrying - Decreased libido, aches at the thought of having sex - When having sex I get into it & it's ok but harder to orgasm. It is November 27, removal scheduled for Nov. 30th... This is not worth it. I'd rather risk pregnancy..."

For Birth Control "I got the Skyla IUD put in on November 7th, 2017. The pain of getting it in was a 9/10. I have had on and off cramping and bad back pain since then. In just a month, I have experienced weight gain, acne, facial hair growth, severely oily skin, severe anxiety, vertigo, nausea, depressed mood, irritability, and more. It has been a month and I was in the hospital last night with extreme pain in my abdomen and pelvic region, nausea, and dizziness. I have never experienced pain worse than this. Although it is nice not having to worry about pregnancy, I am having it removed next week."

For Birth Control "19, no children. Never been pregnant before. Got this inserted on the 18th of November. Insertion itself wasn't very painful, and it was fairly quick. Cramps afterward were probably the most painful cramps I've had in my life. My appetite basically disappeared, I've had weird mood swings, and I've been feeling down. But I am optimistic. The worst of the cramps lasted about a day and a half. My period got lighter faster than it normally would. I'm 'off' my period now, but I still have some light spotting. Like I said, I'm still optimistic about the future. Didn't kill my sex drive or anything. I'll probably update in a month or so."

For Birth Control "I had Skyla inserted 2 weeks ago. I had been on the pill on and off for 16 years and hated it. It was making me nauseous, depressed, and anxious. My gyno recommended the IUD. I've had no kids and have a small cervix. As everyone has mentioned, insertion is painful but short. I took 2 aspirin and a relaxant beforehand, and it still really hurt. Probably the worst part of recovery for me is that I've been spotting and on and off cramping for 2 weeks now. However, I haven't spotted in 2 days, so I'm hoping that's the end of it. Besides that, I am very happy with it -- I don't feel any changes in mood, appetite (if anything, appetite is less), sex drive, and no nausea! I would say give yourself 4-5 days to heal (I didn't and regret it)."

For Birth Control "I got my IUD in October 2019, the process was excruciatingly painful. I experienced cramping and spotting for the first months. Then my period went away for a while. Eventually, it started occasionally, but, for example, I’ll have cramps but no blood. I’ve had this IUD for 1 year and 7 months, it’s prevented pregnancies. But it affected me mentally and sexually. I’d dealt with depression in the past, and I went to therapy and got better. Once I got the IUD, it just went downhill from there. Every time I’d want to have sex, it didn’t feel good or I’d bleed out of nowhere because my periods were so irregular. I lost over 20 pounds because of the depression, and my sex life has been lackluster. IUDs are great but can have greater side effects on younger women with sensitive bodies, prone to depression. I’m getting it taken out because I want my body back, and I realized that I underestimated the IUD as the key problem to not feeling like myself."

For Birth Control "I found out I was pregnant, we were happy, bla bla. At 3 months, we found out it was a molar pregnancy. So, the OB/GYN scheduled for a D&C, they suggested Skyla in the midst of being sad and disappointed with failed pregnancy. I was like, fine, we just want to get it over with so I can go home - mind you, these people had me next to women who were ready to POP - all excited about their newborns, and I'm over here heartbroken. Anyways, I wake up from anesthesia with a sharp needle-like pain. I didn't even open my eyes. I just felt like a needle was poking my vagina and playing darts with my uterus/ovaries. He tells me a few days of cramps and blood. Six weeks later, I'm still spotting and cramping, I'm losing hair, anxiety, sore bones, suicidal, depression for no reason other than this device. My pelvic area is always throbbing and in discomfort."

For Birth Control "I just got mine done about 3 hours ago, and I did not realize how bad it actually hurt. So now the cramps are really bad. Overall, I'm very excited because I hated the pill, it made me depressed. I've heard some horror stories about this, but I hope none of it happens to me. I suggest taking ibuprofen or something before. I cried afterward, which is common because it was very uncomfortable. I'll come back in a week and tell how I'm feeling! Glad I'm not alone."

For Birth Control "I've had Skyla for almost 3 months now. The first month was bad, with pain and cramping, constipation and diarrhea alternating, and constant nausea and fatigue. The second month, my period barely showed up, but I was stuck with all the cramping and spotting randomly. My sleeping has gotten much worse. I've been on Ambien and Lunesta and Doxepin, nothing really keeps me asleep. I find that when anything goes wrong, I slip into a prolonged depressive state that includes me being on the verge of tears all day, every day. The cystic acne comes at all times of the month. I'm getting this thing taken out. Not worth it."

For Birth Control "I had Skyla in for a month and had a pretty terrible experience. I'm 18 and very sensitive to hormones (I have PMDD), so that may be why it affected me so badly. I had extreme mood swings, and worsened depression and anxiety. It also gave me acne and fatigue. Also, my boyfriend said he could feel the strings."

For Birth Control "Finally got my Skyla IUD taken out today. I immediately felt better afterward, bye-bye acne, weight gain, and depression! The only good thing about Skyla was that I didn't have a period. That's it. I wish it worked for me, but everybody's different! Going natural for a while so my body will relax without all the hormones I've had. My boyfriend and I choose not to have sex anyway! Good experience, definitely learned what my body doesn't like. If I do get on birth control again, I'm going back to Loryna pills."

For Birth Control "My experience with Skyla was a nightmare! First of all, the insertion was so painful. It was the worst pain I have ever felt, and I have had multiple surgeries. I could barely get out of bed for the first week. The biggest problem, however, were the mood swings and depression. I was very happy and content with my life and relationship before getting my IUD and never had any mental issues/mood swings. Within a month of getting my IUD, I experienced severe mood changes and depression symptoms, I was crying all the time for no reason, I had severe anxiety attacks, and felt generally hopeless and lost interest in all activities I used to love. It crippled my life, my work, and my relationships. Within days of taking out the IUD after 2 months, I felt back to my normal self. I honestly recommend thinking very carefully before getting this. The mental health effects are so powerful and dangerous and happen much more frequently than talked about (6-10%)."
