For Birth Control "I have had my KYLEENA since July 2018. The insertion is a little painful, but no worse than a mild cramp from a period! I suggest taking off from work or school! I love my IUD. I used to have 11-13 day heavy periods, now I have 1-2 days super light. Don’t have to wear a pad or tampon! Still occasionally get a cramp or two, but Kyleena is wonderful birth control!"

For Birth Control "Had the Kyleena inserted in Oct 2019. It was incredibly sore for 10 seconds, and then felt like light period cramps. Drove back to work afterwards. No pain relievers, as they were to cost hundreds. I did have a termination done due to an ectopic pregnancy a month prior to this, so in comparison, this was a piece of cake. Some spotting on and off for 3 months afterwards, as was explained. Now, no periods whatsoever. Some acne and light cramps, as per usual periods before insertion, but way better than going natural and with much less hassle. Partner and I are very happy with this form of contraception so far."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena inserted last week, and just like everybody says, it was painful, but only for about 30 seconds. It feels like a very strong period cramp, nothing too bad. I also got it inserted on the 3rd day of my period (my periods usually last 5 days), and the IUD ended my period early, actually the same exact day. I didn't have any spotting until 4 days later and minimal cramping, nothing too bad. The first day was the most uncomfortable day, but after that, I felt fine. So far, I definitely recommend it. This is my first type of birth control, and I just didn't want to take a pill every day because I know I would forget about it, and the IUD is a lot more effective. I will update my experience, but it's not as scary as it seems like it would be."

For Birth Control "I started thinking about getting the IUD after I went to the clinic for my depo shot, and the nurse talked about the benefits since I’m going to college next year. I was originally going to get the Mirena inserted, but after further inspection, the gynecologist determined that my uterus was small and suggested Kyleena. The experience will be different for everyone, but personally, the pain after insertion was absolutely terrible and intense. I had to wait in the clinic for 2 extra hours to recover from the pain. The cramps were horrible, and I was getting hot flashes like I had a fever. As soon as I got home, I threw up about four times and had to take a hot bath and some meds to ease the pain. A week later, I did have some moments of intense cramping but only a couple. Now I only have one cramp or two a day. I will say that the back pain is my least favorite part, but at the end of the day, I can still feel all of this and say that it’s worth it for the thought of 5 years of protection."

For Birth Control "Insertion was painful. I had three big cramps, but it was so fast the pain started to subside after. They gave me 800 mg ibuprofen just before it. Afterwards, my pelvis was sore and I felt lightheaded, so they made me sit down before leaving. I was sore for the first few days, then had mild cramping here and there. Week 2: I had this episode of severe cramping that felt like I was in labor (never been pregnant, but have witnessed people in labor). I would get a big, big cramp like the one I felt during the insertion, and it would come and go every 5 minutes to the point where I could not lie down, I had to be in a yoga child's pose because I couldn’t move from the pain. I took 800 mg ibuprofen and 500 mg of Tylenol, and after a couple of hours, the pain stopped but left me with a sore/stiff lower abdomen. This happened again on day 10 and 11, each time lasting for about 2-3 hours—taking pain meds and a heating pad. Might get this removed."

For Birth Control "This is a day one review. I am 43 and have no kids. I got Kyleena inserted today. The insertion process was painful - I have a pretty decent pain tolerance, and it did hurt. There were two pretty sharp pains, but the process was very quick. No pain after the process and no spotting or bleeding. It's been about 12 hours, and there are just some annoying cramps. Not really painful. I'll report back with my experience."

For Birth Control "Pros: super effective, lighter periods, but still spotting indicating I was not pregnant. Even while on antibiotics, Kyleena worked so well, and I didn’t even have to think about it. Cons: had ovarian cysts, and my body did not like the hormonal type of birth control, so I had to get it out. I had side effects like jaw pain, hot flashes, and cramps."

For Birth Control "Sharing my experience for the insertion process only since I've had my Kyleena for a week. Not gonna lie, the insertion was painful (6.5/10) (for me). I took Advil an hour before the procedure and ate a big breakfast. I still felt pain during insertion, but it is very short-lived (5-8 seconds), so nothing I couldn't handle. I immediately started cramping. My cramps felt comparable to the ones I had in high school on the first day of my period pre-birth control pills. I would definitely suggest taking the day off of work or school to rest in bed. The next day I felt totally normal and went back to work just fine. A week in and I'm not cramping or spotting at all. I think it really depends on your body how you will react to it. For me, it is a much better alternative to the pill."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena inserted in the middle of April. I would describe the pain as 5/10, and it only lasted about a minute. The rest of the day, I had no cramping and only light spotting. After the fact, I bled every day until the beginning of June. Still no cramping, just spotting. Since then, I have had 2 periods. They have been my normal length (6-7 days), but have been much lighter. My first period after Kyleena (the end of June), I had very heavy cramping. This was weird for me because I normally don't get cramps at all. It wasn't a problem for my second period, though. Overall, I think it's definitely worth it. You just have to tough out the first few months!"

"Well, I am 27 years old with no children, and today I had my first IUD put in. And OMG! Ouch is an understatement. He didn't have numbing cream or anything to put on my cervix, and he had to use hemostats (forcep thing) with a long nose to open my cervix. That was the worst experience of my life. I'm not sure if the IUD is worth all the pain I am experiencing right now. No matter what position I am in, I am uncomfortable. I took Aleve, it eased the pain, but I still have a lot of it. If I would have known this would be so painful, I probably wouldn't have done it."

For Birth Control "After having a lot of issues with the Mirena and Liletta (headaches/body pain/mood swings), I decided to switch to Kyleena because of the lower dosage. Best decision ever! Insertion was your typical heavy cramp for a split second... I took 800 mg ibuprofen before insertion. I’ve had it for almost a month now, and I feel great. My energy level has actually peaked, and I feel well rested in the morning! It's been easier for me to stay on routine and get my daily workout in. I haven’t noticed weight gain, and my first period was a bit lighter. Overall, I am pleased to have a birth control that is working and not making me feel like I am sick or crazy."

For Birth Control "This review is from me personally, who struggled with over 3 oral contraceptive brands with serious side effects. I had no option but to go for a progestin-only option. The insertion was a bit uncomfortable, and the pain only lasted for a few seconds. I had light spotting for a week and very light cramps. After that first week, things took an unexpected turn. I fully bled for a whole 7 weeks (I'm talking tampons every day) and had uncontrollable cramps and intestinal pain. After that period, it ended as soon as it started. I only get light spotting ever so often, and cramps are light and minimal. I would suggest anyone who considers this to give your body a few months to adjust, and also to monitor if it interferes with any immune disorders. It was very tough at first, but I feel since I gave my body some time to adjust, I might actually keep it in since it got better. I would recommend it if you have any bad side effects with the estrogen hormone like I did."

For Birth Control "I had my Kyleena insertion today. Yes, like many described, it is painful. Felt like pinching and extreme menstrual cramps. Nothing you can’t handle! Only lasted a few seconds during the procedure. I’ve suffered from severe menstrual cramping all my life. Perhaps this is why I handled the pain so well. As soon as the Dr. finished insertion, pain gradually faded. Cramps came back about thirty minutes later for a few minutes, then sporadically throughout the day. So far, so good! Will follow up after one month update! It is 9 pm and I am feeling no pain now. So, as far as the procedure goes, it is tolerable, do not scare yourself reading negative reviews :)"

"I got the Kyleena in October 2018 after I had a constant heavy period for over a year (yes, it was as bad as it sounds). I was severely anemic and so depressed after countless doctor's visits where they just told me to go on the pill (I had previously been on the pill and had terrible side effects), so that was not something I was willing to do again. The insertion process was painful but not horrendous. I experienced pain and cramping for a couple of weeks afterwards, and the bleeding started to reduce. After 3-4 weeks, I felt great and the bleeding had completely stopped. Now, 6 months on, I still never have any bleeding (which I am fine with after a year from hell), no other side effects at all. It hasn't appeared to affect my weight, sex drive, or mood, which is fantastic. Also, the added benefit of not having to worry about birth control is great. I would definitely recommend everyone give this a try as if it works for you, it is amazing."

For Birth Control "I got the Kyleena coil inserted on Monday, the 17th of June. The whole process has been a nightmare, and I’m just sharing this experience as the reviews I read beforehand definitely misled me into thinking it was going to be a doddle. After insertion, I almost passed out, I threw up five times and was in severe (I honestly wanted to call an ambulance) pain until about 1 pm on Tuesday. I didn’t sleep the whole night. However, since Tuesday, I have frequently experienced severe pain with bleeding. I've had a scan to check that it is in the right position - it is. However, I have a retroverted uterus, which the doctor said could be contributing to the pain, and if in six weeks the pain hasn’t subsided, to come back and get it removed. Obviously, everyone is different, but I just wanted to share that my initial experience with this form of contraception has not been plain sailing. If I had known it would be like this, I would have never had it done as I went on it to make my period cramps better."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena inserted on 8/30/17. I have had it now for about a week and a half. I had never had an IUD before, I had taken Taytulla and Junel birth control pills for over 7 years and wanted something different. The procedure took about 15 minutes. The pressure of putting it in a little further so that it was in all the way was a little painful and like a sharp cramping feeling. Afterwards, I felt a bit lightheaded and laid there for about 5 minutes, and then I was on my way. It's been a little over a week, and I have some small spotting but not a lot, and my sex drive has definitely increased. I am very satisfied with this product so far!"

For Birth Control "The thing with contraception is that it works differently for every person. I tried pills, an arm implant, another IUD… Nothing felt right until Kyleena. I’m on my second now, and I absolutely love it. Yeah, putting it in is painful - I was in terrible pain for about 2 days. But there’s also a benefit: I hardly get a period anymore. Before, I had periods so painful, I had to skip school/work for 2-3 days every month and lie in bed with a hot water bottle in total agony. Kyleena completely eliminated that issue. It works for me, and I recommend it to my friends, but I’m fully aware that it might not work for them. Everyone is different, and ultimately these online reviews are utterly pointless. You just have to keep trying until you find something that works for you."

For Birth Control "I have just had my first Kyleena removed yesterday (after 5 whole years) and had my new one inserted. I absolutely love this form of birth control, and I love being protected for 5 years and not having to think about it. As far as insertion pain goes, you will feel some slight discomfort that only lasts a few minutes, and afterwards you can expect some light cramping and bleeding for a few days (which can continue on and off for 3 to 6 months), but after that period of time, my periods stopped completely, and I only started to spot again once I was in year 4 of having the Kyleena, but even this was nothing compared to my periods prior to getting the IUD. Bottom line, this is the best birth control EVER, and I highly recommend it :)"

For Birth Control "I've had the Kyleena in for over a year. As of now, I love it, however, at the beginning, I was hating myself. The insertion itself was not bad, but seconds after, my uterus started dilating, and it was awful! I passed out and had to have my mother drive me home. After reading reviews after reviews, I thought this would last a day or a week, it did not. For months after insertion, I had to take high-end pain pills to keep me from passing out, the pain was horrible (on my knees bawling). I had really thought something terrible happened, but after the check-up, they said everything looked great and this was normal. I really wish they would have told me unbearable pain was normal because I would not have got it. However, over a year later, the pain has mostly subsided, other than random blue moon lightning strikes in my uterus. My period has also completely stopped."

For Birth Control "I went and got the Kyleena IUD 3 months ago. The insertion was literally (I am not exaggerating) the WORST pain I have ever felt. I almost threw up. I’ve always had painful, long periods, but ever since I got this thing, it has been nothing but pain. My period will last anywhere from 3 weeks to a month. I’m almost ALWAYS on my period. They say to wait 6 months, and if the side effects don’t go away, to get it taken out then, but I’m not sure if I can wait that long. The pain is unbearable. I rated this medicine a 9 because it is highly effective, but for me personally, I don’t think it’s worth it! But hey, if you’re a tough cookie, then it is a highly effective birth control to be put on."

For Birth Control "Unsure whether it was placed wrong at first, but doubt it, as I was always checking its positioning and had no concerns until doing light (like a few crunches) exercise. I heard a pop and felt this super weird sensation. After that, I assessed and could feel it embedded into the side of my vagina. It’s confirmed it’s embedded and needs to be surgically removed. I also have had terrible symptoms for a month now, feeling like I was going to pass out, dizzy, having the hardest time with memory, leg pains, hip pain, crazy hair loss! I would not recommend this to anyone. I have hardly had the energy to take care of my 5-month-old. And trust me, this is so different from depression (the pill affected me). I’m so motivated, but my body is just failing me like crazy since getting it in. Before this, I had absolutely no medical history, I was extremely healthy. Also, all my blood work has come back perfect, so this is all because of this terrible device."

For Birth Control "I’ve had the Kyleena for 3.5 years. For me, it hurts like anything getting put in. I had to ask my mom for a pain pill, which says a lot because I don’t even take aspirin normally. I immediately stopped getting a period, which has been great, but my weight has continued to climb (not saying it’s entirely due to the IUD, of course), and it’s damn near impossible to lose weight with it. My skin is still clear but very oily, and I lose a lot of hair in the shower. I had a hair loss problem with Nexplanon as well, so I definitely attribute that to the Kyleena. After 3 years, I suddenly started having cramps at random for weeks at a time and spotting frequently-still no periods. The depression has also gotten much worse over the years, it’s a struggle. I’m contemplating having it removed now that the side effects are suddenly ramping up. Overall, it was nice to begin with and has gone downhill as the years pass."

For Birth Control "Took 2 Advil prior to insertion. The insertion hurts like a cramping feeling for a few minutes at the most. I was terrified after reading all of the reviews about how much it hurt, but it really was not that bad. Afterwards, I laid down for a couple of hours. I was in pain for a bit, but a heating pad really helped with the cramps. The next day/week I was able to work, no problem. A week with no problems, then I started to have some cramps and spotting. The spotting lasted on and off for about 6 weeks. Sometimes heavy, but mostly light. I am currently on month 3 with the Kyleena, and I am very happy. I cramp a bit when I get my period, but periods last maybe 2 days and are light bleeding."

For Birth Control "I have had this for over a year. Overall, I would say it’s an awesome contraceptive. My boyfriend and I never use protection, and so far, so good. The only thing that I have serious problems with is the side effects! I have horrible pains about twice a month that literally feel paralyzing! It’s only on the left side of the IUD, and I’ve gone to the doctors many times, and they say that nothing's wrong, but the pain is severe! Make sure you explore all IUD brands before you make your decision. If you get one you’re not too crazy about, insurance won’t change it until the length of the IUD is over (mine is 4 or 5 years). Overall, I give it 10 stars for not getting me pregnant, but 0 for the insane pain that I feel monthly."
