For Birth Control "So I just want to start this off by saying I’m sure Kyleena works for some but not for everyone. I don't do well with hormones. When I was researching, I found ParaGard, which had no hormones. I went to my gynecologist, and I told her I wanted the ParaGard and absolutely no hormones. She mentioned Kyleena, but I still said I didn’t want any hormones. So I thought we agreed on ParaGard. I got the IUD inserted, and it was painful, something I had never felt before, but nothing I couldn’t live with. I had really bad cramping in the beginning, then it got better. After the 2 1/2 months came around, I would get random swings of extreme depression and anxiety. It was affecting my personal and professional life. I thought I was going crazy. I later found out she put in the wrong one, it was Kyleena. Ladies, I really recommend being very stern with what you want to your doctors, and before you do anything that is going to mess with your hormones, get them tested to see if it will work with your body."

For Birth Control "This review is on the insertion of Kyleena only. I just had my Kyleena placed 3 hours ago. I was really wound up before my appointment after reading horror stories. I also have a hypertonic pelvic floor that makes penetration painful for me (but has improved through PT). Honestly, I started laughing as soon as my GYN took the speculum out. I felt two pinches during the procedure that were uncomfortable, but very quick, and I hardly registered them as being painful. I took 800 mg of Ibuprofen an hour before my appointment. Deep breathing helped. I have felt no pain since the two pinches. I am 29, no children, 5’5 and 110 pounds. This is my first IUD. Remember that while people do have painful experiences, people are more inclined to leave reviews for things like medications when they have a bad experience rather than a smooth one. I hope this helps calm someone who, like me, may be preparing for the worst. I expected to scream, faint, or throw up, and what actually happened has been the farthest from that."

For Birth Control "Love it! I dealt with the pain, spotting, and discomfort of a full-sized copper IUD for 4 years... all symptoms resolved within 2 weeks of removal. I tried the pill but had so many side effects. I had Kyleena implanted, and I have almost no side effects except very, very mild menstrual symptoms (spotting, no bleeding, mild cramping, mild breast tenderness). I didn’t expect my period to go away, but it basically has - again just very mild spotting. It's hard to find tampons small enough to use (lites). No issues during sex, cramping from implantation resolved within a few weeks. I wish I got one earlier."

For Birth Control "I had my Kyleena put in 2 years ago. I previously was on the pill for 7 years, while on the pill, I did not have a period or cramps. Kyleena is a different story. I have cramping 3-7 days of the week minimum, randomly start my period, or spot, always with different amounts of flow. The cramps were so bad after a year, my gyno was worried and had an ultrasound of my ovaries. I often have pain/cramping after sex since I had Kyleena inserted. My cravings are constant, and I have put on a significant amount of weight, 40 pounds, also having the hardest time getting rid of the weight. Kyleena is convenient, but not sure how much longer I’m going to be dealing with this pain."

For Birth Control "After the insertion, I had mild bleeding then spotting for at least 2 weeks. I also had leg pain and lower back pain for 2 weeks after, just like the doctor said I would. The leg pain went away, but the lower back pain lasted for 6 months. I had major cramping every time I was going to have a bowel movement, never stopped spotting, had pain with a pressure-like feeling. My migraines got worse and more frequent, my appetite was lost due to feeling nauseous for the 6 months. I lost 10 pounds, felt foggy, and experienced major anxiety and depression with dark thoughts. The doctor told me these were 'weird' symptoms and asked if I was sure I wanted it out. As soon as she pulled it out, the pressure in my head left, and I can't wait to start feeling better. It sadly did not work for me."

For Birth Control "I’ve given Kyleena a month and a half, and I can honestly say I’m dissatisfied and unsure of what to do next given the negative side effects I’ve experienced already. I’ve had cramping halfway through the month, which was literally worse than the process of termination I experienced. The pain from this IUD was so bad, it left me doubling over, and pain actually traveled down to my feet. It didn’t even result in a period either, it’s just been constant spotting, which didn’t stop until a few days ago. I’ve had cystic acne, irritability, and depression, as well as a moderately dull pain/cramping that comes and goes as my mood fluctuates. I’ve decided to have it removed. I’m so saddened that this is all women have to turn to in this day and age for birth control. There are way too many side effects, you’d think there would be something else by now that doesn’t hurt and ruin women’s lives the way our current options do."

For Birth Control "Got the Kyleena inserted just over a year ago. Was in pain for a few days post-insertion, but since then, nothing. Haven't had my period in over a year, which is a huge plus. I had perfectly clear skin in high school, but about four months in, started slowly breaking out on my chin and cheeks. At first, it wasn't too bad, but nothing I've been able to find has stopped it. On the positive side, I lost 10 pounds but continue to suffer from acne and acne scarring. Currently trying to solve this issue because other than that, Kyleena has been fabulous."

For Birth Control "I have been on birth control pills all of my teen years until now (12 years). I have decided to switch it up about a month ago. I’ve now had Kyleena for about two weeks. My light bleeding has stopped, and I feel great. My doctor had me insert the medicine beforehand to soften my cervix and had me take 800 mg ibuprofen an hour before the procedure. Placing the Kyleena was a lot better than I imagined. I, personally, didn’t have any pain afterward. Now, my mood is a lot more stable, my libido is coming back, my skin looks great, my metabolism seems to be much faster, and my cravings and eating habits have really subsided. I’m hoping everything stays this great! Also, my insurance covered this completely!"

For Birth Control "So I posted a review about the Kyleena a little while ago, shortly after my insertion. Things were okay, I was a little crampy, and I spotted a bit, but things were okay. Then I got my first period on Kyleena. I ended up in the hospital not once, or twice, but 8 times in the course of about 2 weeks due to severe pain. I was told no cysts had burst, and the IUD was in the right place. No pain medication or management offered, just some unhelpful and disappointing news. Now I've had Kyleena for about 6 weeks, and I'm getting it removed in 3 days. I'm in pain 24/7, bleeding and spotting off and on, my antidepressants aren't as effective lately, and I'm losing sleep mostly due to pain. I can't do anything without triggering cramps, and if I breathe weird when I do sleep, I wake up with a searing pain in my cervix. The only positive thing I can say about Kyleena is that it's great at being a contraceptive because I'm too miserable to want to have sex."

For Birth Control "I have been on the Kyleena for about 10 months. Insertion was painful but not bad. I bled for about three months after. I used to get few and infrequent pimples, but now my acne has been terrible. I also have experienced mood swings and pretty intense depression. I am thinking about getting it removed as I come up to the 1-year mark because it's honestly not worth feeling terrible. Great that I don't have to worry about becoming pregnant, but I think I'd prefer something else."

For Birth Control "I got the Kyleena IUD inserted 2.5 years ago. The insertion process was extremely painful for me. Four months after insertion, I developed a huge ovarian cyst that sent me to the ER. I got another one two months later that also required going to the ER. Since then, I have developed painful cysts each month, my acne has gotten much worse, and sex has become really painful. A week ago, I went to the doctor to have it removed. My doctor tried for more than 15 minutes before giving up. It was excruciating. The strings had curled up into my uterus and removal was impossible without surgery. Now I have to wait to get a hysteroscopy to finally remove the IUD. Not only is surgery scary, but after insurance, I have to pay $1,340 out of pocket. My experience is worse than most without a doubt. However, 22% of women with Kyleena develop painful ovarian cysts during their experience. My symptoms are not uncommon, so I highly discourage any woman from getting this type of birth control."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted just over a month ago. The insertion itself was very painful but brief, with a little lightheadedness immediately after. I spent the next two days in bed with awful cramps, but by day three was feeling back to normal. I've had zero bleeding or spotting since the insertion. I did experience some mild cramping throughout the month, but nothing a little Midol didn't fix. I recently had my follow-up visit with my doctor, and the IUD is still perfectly in place. In addition to stress-free birth control, I have noticed my mood and sex drive have improved drastically compared to the pill. So far, I'm loving Kyleena!"

For Birth Control "Got Mirena once I turned 18. Was the most painful and sickening experience of my life. Never went back to follow up with the doctor. After 3 months of bleeding and pain, everything cleared up and I almost never got my period until after the 5-year mark. Getting a new IUD, I was so scared of the pain that the doctor suggested Kyleena because it was smaller. Insertion was uncomfortable and I had mild cramping. It's been over 2 years and I get a regular period. My cramps have all of a sudden gotten so out of hand I get sick and it’s painful. I've had terrible acne (it gets painful at times) since I've been on Kyleena, which I never had to deal with before this and I'm 25 years old. I plan on getting it removed, but I was told the strings are now missing. Also, after the first year, after having sex regularly, I would bleed uncontrollably afterward. I'm not sure if it was due to the strings being pushed back or what, but it was a complete nightmare and still is. I'm so sick of birth control and stressing over IUDs."

For Birth Control "I am on my 3rd day with Kyleena and have nothing but positive feedback so far. Most people are worried about the insertion, which I was terrified of, but now I am laughing as I read through these comments because truly the only part that makes it scary, and admittedly made me so nervous before, is reading other people's 'dramatically painful' stories. Yes, it hurt, but so does stubbing your toe or getting a paper cut, and sincerely, the worst of the pain (the IUD going into your cervix) didn't last as long as either one of those scenarios. It is in for 5 years, and the worst of the insertion is truly so quick that I didn't even have time to process what I had just felt. It is so worth it. Do it if you want it, don't let people scare you."

For Birth Control "I was absolutely fine at first, very smooth fitting (some pain but only for a very short time). But after about nine months, my periods stopped altogether, and since then, I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety, it’s crippling! I’ve also had nonstop stomach and pelvic pain, back pain, uterine spasms, headaches, breast pain, and adult acne. To note, I have only had very minor stomach/pelvic pain in the past and only during periods, I have never had back pain nor unexplained breast pain or uterine spasms! I have had none of these symptoms for a prolonged period of time. These symptoms have been going on for over 5 months now, until I read these reviews, and the resemblances are absolutely uncanny. I am getting the IUD removed today! This is not to say that you will have a negative experience with the Kyleena IUD, as everybody is different. This is just to reach people that are experiencing these symptoms. You are not alone!"

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena put in yesterday morning, and the insertion experience was fine. Only felt minor discomfort when it went into my uterus (maybe made 2 sharp inhales, that's all). I didn't feel the tenaculum being clamped onto my cervix at all (the doctor warned me I'd feel a pinch). The doctor I had was great and had tons of experience with IUDs. This is what I did before my appointment: inserted two 200 mcg misoprostol tablets ~3.5 hrs prior (doctor prescribed), took 2 'ratio-LENOLTEC No. 1' tablets ~1 hr prior (also called Tylenol 1s; not prescription, but are behind the counter at the pharmacy), and had a good breakfast ~1.5 hrs prior (oatmeal, banana, orange). After my appointment, I relaxed for the rest of the day. I had minor bleeding (pantyliner ok) and dull ache cramping (nothing sharp). I took 2 more Tylenol 1s in the afternoon and used a heating pad on my abdomen. If I had to, I could've gone back to work after. I am in my mid-40s and have had no kids. I hope your insertion experience is just as easy as mine was!"

For Birth Control "I’ve heard a lot of people are offered a cervix softener before insertion— I was not given anything to prepare me. Getting the IUD put in hurt a lot, and the insane cramps continued steadily for about a week. I am constantly bleeding (which isn’t great for me, I’m very anemic), and I can feel my IUD whenever I lay on my side. I brought both of these things up to my doctor at my follow-up appointment, and she told me to just wait out the bleeding. The pain while laying on my side was never addressed. She just said, “That’s weird.” Yeah, thanks! It’s hard to tell if I’m still getting a period because I’ve been bleeding so much every day. It’s more than spotting. It’s making me feel so gross that I never want to have sex anymore. I’m 4 months in, and I’m considering getting it taken out and getting a partial hysterectomy. I’m extremely depressed."

For Birth Control "I have had Kyleena for less than a week. Although I cannot say much about medium/long-term side effects, I wanted to share my experience up to now. The pain of having it fitted was not at all unbearable and was definitely made worse by the fear of having an IUD inserted. The doctor made me feel relaxed, knowing she's done it before many times. The procedure was quick. I've mainly felt a weird type of discomfort, but nothing terrible. Remember how many other women get it, and the reviews you read tend to be negatively biased most of the time. Simply because the majority that feels fine with it doesn't have the urge to complain about it but goes along with their lives. The first two days I had few cramps and had some dark spotting, which seems to have lightened today. I can say that I don't feel anything weird or uncomfortable in my belly now. And the thought of not being on loads of estrogen or other hormones relaxes me. Good luck to you all choosing the best contraceptive."

For Birth Control "This is just on the insertion of Kyleena. I got it about 4 hours ago, I was on this website for days before getting terrified by the comments I read, so I just wanted to leave one of my own and say that it's not THAT bad! It was painful, for sure, but nothing dramatic. I'm taking the rest of the day to rest, but I was able to get some errands done without issue. Just make sure to take a good dose of Ibuprofen before, and it will help with the pain after."

For Birth Control "Got the Kyleena inserted almost four months ago. Doctor recommended it because I have PCOS and I also get migraines. Since this is estrogen-free, I guess it was the best choice. Insertion wasn't terrible, it was painful. I took ibuprofen beforehand, and it didn't help at all. I agree with the comment that it feels like a knitting needle being jammed up there. I had bad cramping the day of insertion and the next day, after that, nothing. The biggest side effect is I have bled every single day. I have not had a single day since insertion that I haven't bled. Doctor said it's normal, but I don't know how much longer I can take this before I get it removed. As of right now, I don't think I would recommend this to anyone."

For Birth Control "Got my IUD inserted one week ago. Getting it put in was probably the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life, with horrible cramping for the rest of that day. I also almost fainted after the procedure. Since that day, cramping is far less painful, but I sometimes feel sharp pain in my ovaries (mainly the left one for some reason) and my cervix. Hopefully, all is fine and the pain will subside soon."

For Birth Control "The Kyleena insertion took about 3 minutes, but the pain level was far worse. The doctor measures the depth of your uterus to ensure the IUD is safe to fit. This process requires a device to be pushed against the upper part of your uterus. Holy moly, that was painful-but quick. After insertion, I had bad cramps for about 1 hour, which subsided to moderately painful cramps after about 8 hours. I took 500 mg of Aleve 30 minutes before the IUD insertion procedure, and I ate a solid breakfast. The insertion is terrible and hurts, but it is over very quickly. Be sure to have pain reliever and a heating pad ready. I took it easy for about two days and did no work. I had my boyfriend come with me for the procedure so he could observe what I was going through and so he could drive me home. I am now over 5 weeks in, and I’ve had no problems with the IUD. I’ve gotten my first “period” with the IUD, and it is so mild. I haven’t gained weight, developed acne, or any of the negative comments you might read. On the plus side, my libido has skyrocketed."

For Birth Control "I am 20 years old, never been pregnant. Insertion of Kyleena was painful but bearable, however, the horrible cramping started immediately after. I thought I was going to pass out in the doctor's office. I was supposed to go to class later but ended up sitting in a coffee shop, unable to move for 5 or so hours, as I could not even walk from the pain and couldn't drive myself home. Extremely heavy bleeding immediately after that lasted about 10 days. The main issue is that the cramps have not let up. Never in my life have I experienced cramps like this. It feels like a sharp, stabbing pain on one side that radiates down my thigh, to my back, and the other side of my stomach. When they first started getting really bad a week after insertion, I thought my uterus had perforated and was getting ready to go to the ER, the pain was so bad. Apparently, these are normal according to the doctor and will go away. However, I have had it for 5 months now, and they have not let up yet, happening almost every day still."

For Birth Control "I got my IUD inserted in December 2018, and I'm supposed to get it out today, April 9th, 2019. The insertion was the most terrible pain I've experienced in my life. I also have not given childbirth, so that might play a factor. The only pro I can say about the IUD is my periods are lighter, shorter, and on time every month!! Besides that, I have been breaking out like crazy, my skin is usually always clear. Ever since I've been on the IUD, my skin has been so terrible, and I've gained 12 pounds within 3-4 months!! Ladies, if you feel certain birth control isn't working for you, try something else!! I've never been so self-conscious about myself, my jeans don't fit, my face is just terrible when my skin is usually clear. It has changed my personality completely. I'm not myself and can't wait to get it removed! Everyone is different, it's always worth a try, but it's not worth your self-love!"
