For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena on June 14th, 2018. I started bleeding two weeks after insertion. Insertion felt like contractions, and I had to lay in bed for the day. I still have a normal sex drive. It cured my dry skin and no acne. I also dropped 3 pounds in a month. I started bleeding on June 27 and stopped bleeding on August 17. At the beginning, I was bleeding enough to count it as a period. The next 2 weeks were casual amounts of light period. It was enough to switch out a liner twice or three times a day. Then there was a week of only one liner a day. Then there was a week or so of only bleeding when using the bathroom. I naturally have bouts of severe depression and generalized anxiety. After taking Kyleena, I've noticed that the depression comes in shorter terms. Where I used to have 3-4 months of depression, now it hits for a week and then fades. My anxiety got a little worse but manageable. If you're still hurting 3 months in, it is time to go get a check-up to make sure it's in the right position."

For Birth Control "I had Paragard for two years even though I had heavy periods and very bad cramps. I can't handle birth control pills (depression, weight gain, acne, you name it). Finally, I gave in and tried Kyleena. Insertion hurts (a minute or two of cursing under your breath and some deep breathing), then I was basically fine. I took Motrin and Tylenol before insertion and took a few doses of Motrin for maybe a week or two after. Some brown spotting a week or so before my first period, then a light period for about one week. Since then, nothing and feeling great! I go back tomorrow to have an ultrasound to confirm placement, so far I can feel my strings and no issues during sex. Definitely recommend, just make sure you go to an OBGYN."

For Birth Control "I got it in June 2020. It hurt a little, but not bad. My period didn’t go away, but no problems. Fast forward to November, bleeding daily, severe cramping, like sword-sharp pain, which is really bad! Got moody, fighting with my boyfriend over everything, depression/anxiety getting worse, meds not helping. My OB said pain and bleeding were normal, so I went a bit longer, getting worse. My regular doctor referred me to a different OB who told me it’s normal and to take ibuprofen 2-3 times a day to stop the pain and bleeding - it didn’t. Meds increased and added, still getting worse. Came across a horror story, so I started digging for info. Then talked to the doctor again, he sent me back to my OB. Went four days ago and had it removed. The OB gave me a hard time, but I kept saying I want it out. That sword feeling in my uterus? GONE! Mood? Completely turned around! My boyfriend and brother both noticed a huge difference that night, and my sister could tell the next morning. I have to adjust to not having the hormones from the IUD, and the removal kickstarted a period, which I 1000% expected, but I feel so much better!"

For Birth Control "I would absolutely not recommend this IUD to anyone! After only a week of having it in, I started breaking out! (I have never had acne in my life before, not in high school, and not even before my periods.) Within the 3 months that I had it, I’ve been taking progression pictures of my skin, and each week or two it would just keep getting worse and worse. I’ve been spotting ever since I’ve had it installed and have experienced cramps, as well as horrible mood swings, as well as depression and anxiety. Please, please stay clear of this and maybe consider another form of birth control!"

For Birth Control "I used Kyleena to avoid heavy periods due to my chronic low iron levels. Had no issues with insertion and removal. I bled for four weeks, then had it removed as my iron levels dropped further. I also developed severe depression from it, four months later, I'm still recovering from the side effects. Would not recommend."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena IUD put in November. It’s August, so 9 months later... and I still get my periods, sometimes really heavy periods too. I feel like it has really messed with my hormones, my body just doesn’t feel right. I don’t feel right, I’m always feeling angry and really depressed most times. I’m getting it removed next month, hopefully, things will go back to normal."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena when I was 19, I have had it for about 6 months now. Everyone’s body reacts differently, but my experience was close to many on here. My depression and anxiety worsened a tremendous amount. The insertion initially wasn’t bad. It was after. I passed out from the cramps, but I have a tendency to do that. Throughout the months post-insertion, my period didn’t end. It was heavy and a complete mess. My gyno said that wasn’t normal as it lasted 3 months, but didn’t see anything wrong with it. 6 months later, I still get heavy periods that are painful and cramps that come and go, no matter if it’s time to start my period or not. I personally am going to keep it just for the pure fact it’s a great birth control method, but I personally would remove it if that wasn’t a factor. It has put my body through hell."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted over 2 weeks ago. The pain was excruciating, yes. I took ibuprofen 600 mg before the procedure, and I really think it helped alleviate the pain after. For 7-10 days after, I had bad intermittent cramps. I usually get horrible, horrible cramps with periods, so this was nothing in comparison. Since then, Kyleena has been great, and no problems, no infections, and no pain. I hate hormonal birth control due to side effects (acne, weight gain, bloating, depression). But with Kyleena, it's been fantastic. Very happy I got it!"

For Birth Control "I'm on week three. Insertion was not that bad. Two days after, the cramps were so bad. I had to pull over on the highway. Still cramping every day. Now that I'm on week three, it's been better, but I still get cramps. I'm still spotting as well. Emotionally, I feel like a mess. I feel very depressed. My doc wants me to try for a few months. But I think I'm gonna get it taken out."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena for about 10 months. It’s worked great for my sister, and she had her period stop, while I, on the other hand, bled non-stop for about 6-8 of those months, and it never got any lighter. Plus, I got pretty bad cramps for the first time ever. It did the job in preventing pregnancies, but the side effects outweighed that one plus for me. Other than the forever-lasting period, I was extremely emotional, was depressed the entire time, and crying almost every day multiple times. I will say that insertion wasn’t terrible, just very uncomfortable. Removal was a breeze, and I had no bleeding afterward. I was on the pill prior and got every symptom you could get, and my only plus with the pill was clear skin. Going onto the IUD, acne came right back, of course. On the plus side, after taking it out, I've been my happiest. I won’t be going back to birth controls (they don't react well with my body clearly), but if you guys have any “natural” suggestions on how to regulate your period, let me know!"

For Birth Control "I have had Kyleena in since 2017. The insertion wasn’t terrible, I felt cramps during insertion but then was given meds and had cramps for the remainder of the day. I did have periods while having it, and my cramps (which were pretty much non-existent before Kyleena) were extremely painful right before I would get my period. I experienced extreme side effects from having the IUD, such as weight loss, depression, and severe anxiety. I will say I never had a problem with getting pregnant, as the IUD did its job. I will be getting it out in April due to the side effects I can just not deal with anymore. I honestly do not recommend this to anyone at a younger age, as I got mine when I was 16, and it is still affecting my mood every day, even when I’m not on my period. It worked for not getting me pregnant, but the side effects are just not worth it."

For Birth Control "I have had the Kyleena for 3 months. The only reason I gave it anything but a one is because I haven’t become pregnant. However, since insertion, my sex drive is so unusually low, so that has lowered my sexual activity anyway. (Maybe that’s the point, less chance of getting pregnant if you hardly ever do it.) I have acne, which I never had. I’ve had two UTIs. Sex is very painful for me, and orgasms are not what they were before Kyleena. I have gained weight. And finally, I have become severely depressed. No major life changes have occurred, and my relationship is doing very well. Luckily, my guy is super understanding. I understand it doesn’t mean it will be this way for everyone, but I’m very sensitive to hormones, so if you have a sensitive body, something to think about. I cannot wait until my appointment for its removal."

For Birth Control "I’ve only had the Kyleena for about a month now. Period started May 14th, got it inserted the 17th of May. It is now June 11th. I do realize it takes about 3-6 months, depending on the person, for symptoms to start laying low. But for some background about my period, it was super regular, super light, and I never experienced cramps. If I did have cramps, they lasted maybe one day out of my entire cycle, super small cramps. Ever since I got the IUD Kyleena, I have been bleeding ever since my period started and after the insertion. Super heavy and annoying. My cramps are like nothing I have ever experienced, back pain like no other, my depression is through the roof. The IUD was my last resort, every other BC made me gain weight and made me a nasty person. Bleeding for weeks straight has put a lot of stress on my body. I’ve lost weight and have no energy to do anything but sleep and go to work because I have to. Being 19 and extremely sexually active, this is super irritating."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena for endometriosis. This was a 9/10 pain experience. I'm now 3 months in, and I'm displaying the side effects: nervousness, depression, low libido, weight loss. The cramps are bad. It hasn't helped with my acne, if anything, it's even worse."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted on Friday, 9/29. Let me just tell you, it hurt like all hell. I suggest taking ibuprofen at least an hour beforehand, I did not. This is where I went wrong. The process was not very long, but it was very painful. After the process was over, I cramped for the rest of the day, but ibuprofen took care of the pain. The next day, I was crampy all day and sluggish feeling. Yesterday, Sunday, 10/1, I felt good as new. Today I feel a bit on the depressed side. Not sure if it is from the IUD or if it's just me. I hope it does not get worse. I will update once I go back to the doctor in 4 weeks!"

For Birth Control "Kyleena has served me well! I have had Kyleena for a year and 3 months, I am 21. Yes, it was uncomfortable inserting it, and I had cramps afterward. It wasn't until I got home that they worsened. I still get my period, but very lightly. I have had some side effects: acne breakouts, raging and depressive moods. When it comes to my mental health, it hasn't thrown it off balance too much, but I do have to say I have had some bad rages for extended periods of time. I will say mean things and will look back, wondering who that person is. I am a little more reactive, my awareness of this has helped me. I'm working on it and practicing patience. I believe with a strong mentality and our woman intuition, every woman can decide for themselves how this affects them and what areas we need to focus on when on it. I never gained weight, and it's been great besides some hiccups I mentioned. I am grateful to not have to remember to take a pill. 10/10."

For Birth Control "I got the Kyleena about 6 months ago. Since insertion, I’ve been happy with the birth control side of it, but I’ve experienced terrible hormonal side effects. I gained about 10 lbs, which was too much for my body, and I got stretch marks, not even stretch marks I can be proud of, like those you get from carrying your child. These are because I got fat... cool. My acne is going out of control, and my period cramps have become worse than they were before. I would suggest the IUD for birth control, but some of the side effects have made me extremely sad and self-conscious. Be aware that it does take a toll on your hormones, and there is no saying how your body will react to it."

For Birth Control "I have had my Kyleena for the full 5 years. Compared to other forms of birth control, this is by far my favorite and affected me the least. That being said, there still were some effects. After the incredibly painful but not unbearable insertion, I bled for 2 months straight. After that, I barely bled at all during my periods. If I took my Adderall or sertraline, they got much lighter, and I might only spot for a day or 2. Stop the Adderall and they come back. I did see an increase in anxiety and depression symptoms, but cannot attribute it completely to Kyleena as there were other situational, environmental, medical, and physical factors involved. As far as BC goes, this sucker is solid, though."

For Birth Control "I've had this birth control for over 6 years now. Went through one and got another after the 5-year expiration date. I personally haven't had any issues with it. Insertion is mostly just uncomfortable, and both times I felt lightheaded for a minute afterward, but that was it. My period has been mostly nonexistent (very light, brown spotting occasionally). No weight gain or acne for me. Others have mentioned anxiety and depression, which I honestly can't say much about because that's something I dealt with even before going on this birth control. I'd say it's worth giving a try. It's great to have a 'set it and forget it' birth control."

For Birth Control "I got the Kyleena IUD inserted almost 2 years ago because I wanted a longer-lasting form of birth control. I have no children. The insertion was not bad at all, and going into the appointment, I had just taken the max recommended dose of ibuprofen. It was a 3/10 on pain, 5/10 for the cramping and spotting afterwards. I kept a consistent but much lighter cycle for the first 9 months. Then it disappeared entirely, which I loved at first. However, I also experienced significant hair loss. I have gained 15+ pounds inexplicably and am bloated regularly. My hair/skin is oily like never before, such that acne has definitely worsened on my chin, neck, and chest. My derm prescribed me spironolactone for hormonal acne, but it has not helped much, and the side effects (constantly peeing, dry mouth) don’t make it worth it. My partner has also observed moodiness, bouts of depression, and very low libido. I plan to get it removed and will switch to either Yaz for my skin’s sake or the non-hormonal copper IUD."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena in Dec 2017 to help my mood and heavy periods. I bled almost every day for the first 6 months. From 6 months to 1 year, I started to get my period at somewhat normal timings, but I was getting my period for 10-11 days as opposed to 6-7 days before the IUD. I just kept telling myself it’s just going to take time for my body to regulate. Another year went by with the same thing, plus it also amplified PMS symptoms. I went in multiple times to ask if this was normal, and I even got an ultrasound of my stomach to make sure everything was in place and nothing was wrong. At about 2.5 years, I started spotting 7 days before my periods, so I was bleeding for around 17 days per month. Finally, at 3 years, I said enough is enough and got it removed. After removal, the first couple of weeks I didn’t feel any changes, but now I am two months after removal and I am having the worst anxiety, depression, and brain fog that I’ve ever had in my life, and I’m wondering if it has to do with getting my IUD removed."

For Birth Control "Have had Kyleena for almost 8 months. Got it because I was having abnormal bleeding on the pill. Spotted and had cramps for a few weeks after getting it, but after that, I stopped having periods altogether. Very painful insertion as well. Nearly passed out, but then again, I don't have the best pain tolerance. I would have rated it higher since it did its job effectively, but ever since I got it, I have had extreme depression and worsened anxiety. I did not have any mental health problems until getting the Kyleena. I even tried several antidepressants and mood stabilizers, and nothing worked, so I'm sure it's the IUD. Getting it removed soon, thankfully. If you are sensitive to medications and hormones, make sure to do your research first and be prepared for possible side effects."

For Birth Control "I got my IUD in January 2020. I had to get off the pills because of my migraines. Getting it in was not as painful for me as it is for some, and for the first few months, it was great. One positive is I love that I only have periods every few months. However, I had never had acne my entire life, and about 3 months after I got it, I started breaking out everywhere (face, chest, back). I got on strong acne meds, but now I have permanent scarring on my face. I also gained 2-5 pounds a month starting 6 months after I got it and have now gained almost 25 pounds. I started experiencing anxiety and depression like never before and have decided to get it removed next week. I know it works for some people, but it really has not worked for my body."

For Birth Control "28, suffer from MTHFR (can't have hormones, so this was one of my only options). NO ONE TELLS YOU THAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE A MIRENA-LIKE CRASH WHEN GETTING THIS REMOVED. Google Mirena crash if you've never heard of it. After I had this removed for only having it a month, I cried for days and became super depressed. Please be aware when trying this out whenever you have it removed you WILL be severely depressed for about a week. As far as symptoms go, felt instantly different after having it inserted. Deep depressing thoughts and felt like I was in a constant fog...high. I didn't want to wait it out to see if I'd adjust as I just felt weird all the time, not myself...and the strings constantly poking me and my partner."

For Birth Control "Okay, so, here’s my experience: Kyleena was absolutely horrible to have inserted, but one thing I’m grateful for is that my gynecologist had a good sense of humor. Anyhow, I was told afterwards I was going to experience a lot of pain for a few hours, which ended up being a whole day. It’s been a year later, and I’m very confused. Sometimes, before my period, I get these cramps so bad I can barely even move my legs — I feel sick, and then I’m depressed. I don’t know if it’s from the IUD, and a part of me hopes it is because then I can just remove it and try to figure things out from there. I’ve gone to the hospital several times, mistaking the thing, thinking it’s moved and then having to wait 16 hours in the ER to just be told it’s in the same spot. It’s such a confusing thing to live with."
