For Birth Control "Mirena was too big for my uterus. I could feel it when doing heavy physical activity, but as a birth control, it worked perfectly. My gyno suggested Kyleena since it was a smaller version of the same thing. I've been on it for about a year and a half now, and I'm not sure how I feel. As birth control, it works great. I get sharp cramps about a week before my period, but my periods are all light spotting for a few days, which is nice. However, over the course of a year, my anxiety and depression have skyrocketed. I've always been kind of sad and nervous, but never to this depth and for this long. I also have really bad acne all of a sudden and have gained a good 30 pounds with no change in diet or activity. I don't know if it's worth it for me anymore."

For Birth Control "Horrible experience. I was on it for four months and had to get it removed. I should have gotten it removed in the second month but thought I could bear with the symptoms hoping they would go away. I felt a change in my mood after having it in for only a few days, I quickly became severely depressed, and I started gaining weight even though I was dieting and exercising. I experienced cramps every day, it was horrible. It lightened my periods, but I never had cramps before getting an IUD. I've had it out for 5 months, and my weight is still stalled, but my mental state is much better, but my periods are still really irregular and definitely off. If you have any sensitivity to hormonal birth control, I do NOT recommend this."

For Birth Control "I've had the Kyleena for over a year. It was good at the start, then I started getting waves of depression and anxiety. Before I knew it, they were constant, to the point I have an appointment booked for Saturday, February 26, 2022, because I'd rather be off contraceptives and have my partner wear condoms and have unprotected period sex because there are very, very low chances there. Anyway, my partner picked up on the mood swings and more depression and anxiety. In saying that, I have a history of depression and anxiety, and when you do your research, it states that hormonal IUDs have an increased risk of depression and anxiety, and the same with other hormonal contraceptives. It's great if you don't have the history and all, but be very in tune with yourself, because before you know it, you can end up like me. Constantly experiencing waves of depression and anxiety for no good reason. It's not healthy for me to be like this, and I cannot wait to get this thing out."

For Birth Control "I wanted to love this IUD, but I’ve had it for 3 months now, and I think I am going to need to have it out. The pain was unbearable within the first month, but eventually has subsided a bit. But the main issues I have experienced are terrible depression in the two weeks leading up to my period. I feel so incredibly in such a dark and depressed state, and I’m concerned that if I do not have it out, I will do something I will regret. I have always had a somewhat low mood before my period, but nothing even close to this before! I am also already on antidepressants, and I am still experiencing this effect. I know everyone has a different experience, but this was something I was very worried about getting this IUD, and maybe if you already have mood problems, this is not the birth control for you. I was also only able to have sex once because I've felt so sad or in pain most of the time I’ve had it."

For Birth Control "I’ve never had a baby, I’m 18, and I was by myself, except I had my father driving for me. I have very regular periods. I tried the pill, which helped with cramps but only for a short amount of time. My periods were light for 3-4 days and very regular (28 or so), even off the pill, they only got better on the pill, but my problem was weight gain, depression, and cramps that came back. DO NOT LET ANYONE SCARE YOU! Yes, you’ll hear stories, but most people who write reviews do it to warn others! The insertion felt like gas pain... LITERALLY. Granted, I’m used to worse, but I highly recommend it. I got it done Sep 14 and stopped spotting Oct 6. I love Kyleena, and it was great. I have had barely any body acne. Nothing drastic. Very much recommend"

For Birth Control "Never get the Kyleena! Although the insertion barely hurt, the mood swings began almost immediately! Not normal thoughts, depression, and insomnia...slept two hours last night and was up with racing thoughts. I am very on top of my emotional health as the Mirena had previously made me depressed to the point of medication, and as soon as I noticed this, I marched back to the clinic today, one week after insertion, and exchanged for a copper coil-the only one to use. On the Kyleena, although fewer hormones than the Mirena, the depression and anxiety were the worst I've ever felt! Don't do this to your loved ones. Look after yourself!"

For Birth Control "I had it inserted early December 2021. I basically had to sing because while I was on two pain medications, it wasn't enough and felt like I was getting stabbed down there during the insertion and nearly passed out. For the next 5 weeks, I was bleeding heavily and cramping, my hips and back were hurting all the time, including a comfortable sleeping position, so I go to sleep in pain. My libido just disappeared, and I went into a heavy severe depression with horrible mood swings and suicidal thoughts for no reason. My gyno dismissed this as 'It's just the hormones, this just takes time,' and he canceled my last appointment to see if there's anything wrong with the IUD. I just wanted to stop my heavy periods and PMDD. I didn't know it was going to be like this."

For Birth Control "I’ve had a great experience with Kyleena so far! I’m 24, and I have tried multiple birth controls before this (including the pill and the Nexplanon implant). The other birth controls made me extremely depressed, so I was nervous to try Kyleena (it’s not exactly easy to remove). I’m not going to lie, the insertion was *extremely* painful. I almost jumped off the table. Thankfully, it lasted not even 2 minutes. I cramped for several hours afterward, but the pain went away completely after that. I’ve had Kyleena for several months now, and I have to say it is completely worth it. I’ve experienced no bad side effects—no mood swings, no depression. I also haven’t had a period since the first month, so that’s a plus. If you’re on the fence about this, I would go for it."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted January 2018. The insert was very, very painful. I spotted for about 6 months after the insertion. Then in June 2018, I had an ectopic pregnancy, which I had to have emergency surgery for in the middle of the night. With Kyleena, I’ve experienced a ton of weight gain, little to no sex drive, and severe depression, and I always have some type of abdominal pain or discomfort. Needless to say, I will be getting this removed ASAP."

For Birth Control "I have used IUDs for birth control since I was 18 years old and have never had a negative experience quite like I did with Kyleena. My doctor pushed Kyleena as the new best option for IUDs, and I should have pushed back more. The hormones are so high in Kyleena that it almost immediately started affecting my mental health. During my first menstrual cycle after getting my Kyleena placed, I was crying uncontrollably multiple times during the day and almost quit my job (very out of character for me). I should have paid more attention, but I slowly started experiencing depression during the normal time I would be PMSing. It wasn't until I had it for 10 months and could no longer get out of bed that I realized what was going on and found a new OBGYN who would help me. I have never experienced depression before, so this was a new symptom for me. I just had mine removed and replaced with a lower hormone IUD that I have successfully used in the past. PLEASE talk to your doctor about hormones!"

For Birth Control "Had Kyleena put in about 5 weeks ago. The insertion was very bad for me. I was told all it would be was mild cramping, but I ended up passing out, throwing up (I almost backed out in the middle of the procedure), and had to stay in the room for 30 minutes. They really don’t warn you… I had rough cramps for 7 days straight, and since then, I have not stopped bleeding. The last week, I have been feeling very depressed, which is extremely unlike me, and have absolutely no sex drive. I also have been breaking out, which I normally don’t. I’m personally not willing to wait for 'my body to adjust' - I don’t care, it’s not worth feeling like absolute garbage physically and mentally all the time. I’m getting mine removed ASAP (which I’m also so incredibly scared to do now, by the way). If my personal friends and family asked if I would recommend it, I would tell them to stay far away from it."

For Birth Control "I’ve been on the Kyleena for just over a month now. I am 19 and have been on the pill since I was 16, and the hormones kind of messed me up, made me really depressed. So I decided to go for the coil. The insertion was the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my entire life. I nearly passed out and vomited straight after. My mom had to stay home from work because I was in so much pain. I’ve never had a baby or anything, but the pains I’ve experienced must be like going into labor. After about a week and a half, the pain completely stopped and my bleeding stopped (I was on my period when it was fitted). Ever since then, it’s been amazing. No pain. No bleeding. Sex drive is up, don’t really feel depressed. However, I’ve just had my first period on it, and the pains are back. Exactly how it was after insertion. I’m hoping that because it’s my first period on it, that’s the reason why I’m in so much pain again. When I’m not bleeding, it’s been amazing for me."

For Birth Control "28 years old, no kids. I got the Kyleena on Jan 11th. It was the worst minute of my life, to be honest, it was traumatic, really. The first 3 days, I had severe cramps to where I couldn't get out of bed, pain medicine didn't help, but a heating pad did. The next 1.5 months, I had sporadic cramps and discharge/bleeding that went away, and my period has gotten shorter/lighter. Two weeks after insertion, I started noticing severe anxiety/depression to the point that it was debilitating. I gained about 15 pounds in 1 month (I'm 5'5, I was 130, got up to 145ish), my diet/activity did not drastically change. Just when I was ready to have it removed due to the side effects, month 3, the anxiety and depression went away almost overnight, and I have started losing weight. I still have bad cramps a few days before my period starts, but they are few and far between. Tylenol does help now. It was a REALLY bad 3 months, but I'm glad I stuck it out, it's worth not stressing about birth control for the next 5 years."

For Birth Control "I'm 26. Never had children. I've had Kyleena for 6 months now. The procedure to get Kyleena placed was easy and not painful. I took 800 mg of ibuprofen before my appointment and didn't feel anything except slight pressure. The day after insertion, I tried to work but ended up in tears because I was having stabbing cramps. The first 3-4 months, I pretty much bled constantly, but it was light. My cramps increased and would be so painful I would be toppled over crying in pain. I have had depression and anxiety that I never had before this. My sex drive has decreased, and my orgasms have become almost nonexistent."

For Birth Control "I’ve been on Kyleena for 3 months. Spotted for 2 weeks and haven’t had a period since. Had acne the first month, but it went away. I have PCOS. I get some weird cramps around my ovulation and where my period would normally be on this, but nothing too awful that ibuprofen and heat can’t fix. I have water retention mid-cycle, about 5 lbs, but it goes away. Sex drive is lower but can still orgasm, unlike on some birth controls. No mood swings whatsoever. I use a 50/50 water and hydrogen douche when I spot a day around my period and haven’t had BV or a yeast infection, which I got from Mirena, I also take probiotics. I have been on the pill and Nuvaring, both gave me terrible depression and killed my sex drive. The copper IUD made me anemic after a year and threw off my liver function, almost like a person with Wilson’s disease, and my immune system plummeted. I’d recommend trying Kyleena definitely, but to each their own."

For Birth Control "I've had my Kyleena for 1 month, and I'm wondering why I didn't choose this sooner! I used birth control pills previous to having Kyleena, and I was absolutely miserable. My estrogen levels were too low, causing irregular bleeding, anxiety, depression, weight gain, etc. I needed a pill with a higher dose of estrogen, however, my doctor would not prescribe a higher dose pill due to my high blood pressure, which was already being worsened by the low dose BCP I was taking. In fact, high blood pressure is the main reason my doctor encouraged me to switch to an IUD. One month in, and I feel like a new woman! My anxiety and depression, while still a bit present, have improved significantly. My blood pressure has dropped to within a normal range. It's freeing to know that I no longer have to remember to take a pill at the same time every day, and I don't have to remember to pack my pills when I won't be at home. I'm acne-prone, and I feel my skin is clearer now than while on the pill."

For Birth Control "I mentally prepared myself for insertion, thinking it would be the worst pain ever based on reviews. I was wrong... I’d rate it a 2/10 at most. Literally, barely felt it. I have a high pain tolerance, but it was a complete walk in the park for me. However, the cramps that followed were UNBEARABLE and nonstop for about 10 hours after. The next day I was fine, cramp-wise, but starting then began to bleed lightly, nonstop for about 6 weeks. After this, no period at all. At first, I thought all was well, but then began to experience pretty severe depression symptoms. Going to have it removed ASAP because I can’t stand feeling this way. Really sucks because it’s an amazing BC method in theory and totally removes any paranoia associated with pregnancy... 10/10 when it comes to preventing pregnancy for sure, but just can’t deal with the depression."

For Birth Control "I've had Kyleena for about 5 months now. The insertion was honestly horrible. I was sweaty, I puked, and nearly passed out. The first month had lots of cramping, but it wasn't too unbearable. Overall, I like the Kyleena as my birth control because it isn't something I have to worry about too often. My periods have stopped completely. I just get some light spotting a couple of times a month. My only complaints would just be that it has caused me to have lots of mood swings and depression and anxiety issues, and I've ended up gaining some weight, but that could be my own fault unless the birth control makes my appetite increase a lot."

For Birth Control "From ages 18-19, I was on the pill, which gave me extreme anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Eight months after stopping the pill, I got Kyleena because I was worried about being on birth control that would disrupt my mental health. I had no mental health effects from Kyleena but had sporadic bleeding for the entire 18 months I had it, which was incredibly annoying. I got it removed and am considering Mirena but really am confused about which direction to go."

For Birth Control "I have had Kyleena for a little over 4 months now, and I am deciding to get it removed. After putting up with symptoms for much longer than I should have, I feel that the benefits do not outweigh the risks. I am 20 with no children. Insertion wasn't too bad, being that I usually tolerate pain pretty well, but I have to admit that it was 3 waves of extremely strong cramps, which is exactly what my gyno told me to expect. Post-insertion, I bled for 2 months straight, basically like having a period every day. I also had terrible cramps every day that had me keeling over in pain, which I had never experienced in my life. I decided to put up with it for at least 3-6 months because I really wanted to give it a chance after everything my body had gone through already. I also gained 10-15 lbs, which I can't seem to lose no matter how much or how little I eat. I already have a history of depression and anxiety, and Kyleena only made it far worse. I didn't, and currently don't feel like myself at all."

For Birth Control "Have had this for 1.5 years now. The insertion process is -10/10 painful to the point where I am already dreading having to replace it. I premedicated with ibuprofen and Cytotec. Side effects - sex drive plummeted and is only starting to come back recently. Mild to moderate cramping for weeks, worse with exercise. Previously had heavy, painful periods that lasted 7 days. I experienced intermittent light to medium bleeding for the first 4 months, then stopped getting periods altogether (AMAZING). I experienced some mild acne in the first several months, which has since cleared. My boobs are 1-1.5 cups larger. I experienced mood swings during my first 6 months - intense irritability, anxiety, and depression. My ob/gyn insisted this wasn't from the IUD, but it's the only thing that changed. Yes, hormones are released locally and slowly, but they still circulate and cause some side effects. Overall - a rough first year, but I'm not pregnant, my boobs are big, and bad effects mostly wore off."

For Birth Control "Worst experience of my life. I’ve always had short, normal periods. For the 6 months I was on Kyleena, I bled for multiple weeks each month. The final month, I bled almost daily. Had the worst cramps of my life for weeks each month. Being terribly depressed. Missed a lot of work till everything got to me, and I ended up quitting because I was so depressed and in pain. Had to go into the doctor several times, paying co-pays each time and paying for a pelvic ultrasound to make sure all was okay. Then left with the recommendation to take ibuprofen and wait it out for the first 6 months. Do not recommend whatsoever. The only benefit is that it was effective in preventing pregnancy. Do not get this device."

For Birth Control "It’s been about 5 months since my insertion of Kyleena. Now, before Kyleena, I had what others would call the perfect period. It lasted 2-3 days of light bleeding. I had no acne, weighed 110 pounds, experienced no cramps, mood swings, or any period symptoms at all, really. After getting Kyleena, I 100% regret it. Every month, I get the most god-awful cramps, and my breasts get so sore and sensitive I can’t even wear a bra on those days. I experience extreme mood swings that my boyfriend can confirm (poor guy). I get waves of depression quite often, and I have gained 20 pounds since being on Kyleena. I work out religiously and maintain a healthy diet, but I still gained a lot of weight. This is by far my worst experience on birth control, really debating on getting it removed soon. I might wait it out until I hit the 1-year mark, but if you’re researching Kyleena, I highly recommend you discuss in detail the side effects with your doctor and the possibilities of the negative outcomes."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena in March 2018. It was so painful during insertion and after for days. And I have a high pain tolerance. I didn’t get any periods while I had it in, but my breast would get very tender, and I started getting bad migraines. And for the past 3 months, the migraines were 3-4 days a week. On top of it all, I was severely depressed. I am going through a lot, so I pretty much put it off on that. I started isolating myself very badly the past 5 months, and depression worsened. Also, at 32, I was getting acne. On 1/25/19, I got it removed, and I feel like I got poison removed from my body! Seriously!! I will never choose hormonal birth control ever again! Everyone’s body is different, though, and you gotta weigh out the pros and cons. I can already tell I will be so much happier without it."

For Birth Control "Kyleena was my first form of hormonal birth control. I have had it for 3 months and am getting it removed tomorrow. I opted for Kyleena because it is low maintenance and contains the lowest amount of hormones. Insertion was extremely painful, and I almost passed out afterward, but I thought the pain was worth it at first. Later in the day after insertion, a wave of extreme depression came over me and lasted for weeks. This came with debilitating anxiety, panic attacks, and mood swings. Throughout the entire time of having this IUD, I have become way more emotional and have been experiencing random hot flashes all the time. I went to the doctor and asked if she thinks all of this could be caused by the IUD, and she said no and prescribed me antidepressants, which made me feel worse. I am starting to believe that the hormones in this IUD are playing a role in the extreme mood changes that I have been experiencing. I am getting it removed tomorrow, and I hope that it is the answer."
