Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "Consulted with the surgeon two weeks ago. After he reviewed X-rays and MRI, he thought I should wait a little longer for knee replacement (I wasn't in much pain that day, so I didn't protest). He suggested the Synvisc-One treatment (cortisone injection had only given me relief for 3 weeks). My life has been pure agony for the past two weeks. Alternating between Voltaren and Tramadol, missing work and wondering if I made a mistake. I also had pain up the side of my leg almost to my hip. Couldn't understand it until I read a review here where someone said the same thing. Anyway, this morning suddenly I feel better. I don't want to jinx it, so I'll just say that if it takes two weeks to kick in, then I can live with that."

Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "Horrible pain during injection after numbing to the point of being lightheaded and having to lay down. I have an extreme high pain tolerance. I have had multiple steroid injections with no pain. Pain medication injections that didn’t hurt. Have had no relief after 2. Would not recommend this drug."

Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "I’ve had maybe 5 double injections of Synvisc One, and a few others of regular Synvisc prior. Always very painful for about a week (unable to walk for maybe 3 days, then slowly better). It usually takes a month or two for me to notice, but I get to very little knee pain and better range of movement (for about 9 months each time). Yet, this time we also did one hip... and I think it was once too much. I reacted badly to the hip injection, and 6 weeks after the injections, I am back to where I was before the injections, knee pain-wise. So I would recommend the product, it helped me a lot for many years... but it seems your body can get a tolerance (or intolerance?) to it, and it can’t be a long-term solution."

Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "I wish to God I had never consented to having this medicine injected in me. I am 49 years old and suffer with mild osteoarthritis in my right knee. My nurse practitioner (NP) strongly suggested this med. I read the pamphlet, which in hindsight was more of an advertisement for the drug instead of unbiased information. I wish I had done more research on this drug. I was to receive a series of 3 injections. Nothing much happened after the first injection, but after the second injection, my knee became swollen, stiff, and very painful. I couldn't bear weight on my right foot without extreme pain. I contacted my NP, who apparently thought I was exaggerating or simply had no experience with adverse reactions to this drug. Well, after begging to be seen, she finally realized it was serious. I ended up having my knee drained and given a cortisone injection. Unfortunately, that only relieved the pain slightly. The pain and swelling eventually returned. Please do your research."

Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "I received the Synvisc injection around a month ago. The day I got it was a lot of pressure discomfort. It didn't hurt while being done because the doctor did it slowly. I had it done in both knees. The doctor said that I probably should not do it both in one day, but I was determined not to come back since I lived quite a distance. This shot is $1,800 a shot, but so worth every dime. After resting the day of the injection because the pain of trying to walk was intense, the day after, I was a brand new person. I got to take a bath for the first time in 2 years. I have only had showers since getting down into a bathtub took getting on my knees, and that was impossible. I have been walking around like I have never had any knee problems, and I have been immobile for over 2 years now. This has been a godsend for me and my family. I have never felt better."

Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "I'm 60 years old, 6'5", 390 lbs, had a traumatic knee injury in my early 20s. After it healed, I pretty much went back to being athletic: martial arts, tennis, running. Had a steroid injection first, which probably did what it was supposed to do: take any swelling away. Then I started feeling cracking in my knee, which I never had, pain significantly increased. I followed up by having the 3 Synvisc injections, which increased my pain dramatically. Six weeks after the 3rd injection, I got an infection on the old scar on my knee. I normally heal very fast, but I had to take antibiotics for a couple of weeks, it took over six weeks to finally heal. Pain is worse than ever, I got no relief at all, probably because I'm heavy. Very frustrating, I guess everyone is different. I wish that I never tried this, but I guess if I didn't, I wouldn't have known. Now I can't even perform my job."

Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "I went through 2 rounds of 3 shots each. I had no relief from the 1st round. My doctor wanted me to try it again 6 months after the third shot of the 1st round. I don't know why to this day that I agreed to allow this. I have a high pain threshold, but damn!, these shots really, really do hurt. Unfortunately, I had my 3 small children with me for one of those visits (couldn't get a sitter). I don't know who it hurt more, me or my kids. They were all holding my hand trying to comfort me, but in reality, I was trying to comfort them. They were all crying because they could tell it was painful. After all that crying, I had to take them out for ice cream after that. Too bad the Synvisc never helped!!!"

Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "I had a Synvisc One injection 11 months ago. Right from the start, I could feel the difference in pain levels and could participate in normal activities again. Two months ago, I had another Synvisc injection. I’m sure the hospital employee didn’t have any idea what she was doing. She used a bigger needle, and I could feel the Synvisc going into the inside of my knee rather than the correct area. I now have more pain than I did before the injection. I’m convinced that when Synvisc doesn’t work, it’s because it isn’t administered correctly. I have no idea when I can get another injection and how I can make sure it’s injected correctly. Very frustrating!"

For Osteoarthritis "I am looking at getting my fourth injection. The first two weeks are bad. Ice... Ice... Ice. My pain never goes away, but by the end of 6 months, I realize how much this does help. I could have had my knee replaced, but have been told I will not be able to kneel after that. I service equipment for a living and spend a great deal of time on my knees and don't think I could do my job. At 55, I need to work. The unloader brace I wear helps too, but all in all, this treatment keeps me going."

Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "All I can say is I wish I had never let the doctor talk me into having this injection. I went in complaining mostly of lower leg pain when sitting or laying down. He convinced me the pain originated with my knee since the x-ray showed moderate arthritis. Nobody ever did anything to check my lower leg at all. I continue to have the lower leg pain I complained of initially. The pain sitting at my desk at work, driving in the car, and laying in bed has gotten so much worse … and now I have pain while walking that is affecting my mobility. This was absolutely the wrong treatment for me."

Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "My Synvisc injections have been very effective for four years (8 injections). I think the variety of comments, both positive and negative, are due to the different 'levels of condition' of our knees. One of my injections was very painful, and one put me on a walker for 18 hours. But all eight of them had very positive results. I swim as physical therapy for the healthy parts of both knees."

Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "10/5/21 I had my 2nd Synvisc shot, and both injections, the one to manage the pain and the Synvisc shot, were so painful I left the doctor's office in tears. The first two shots hurt also, but not as bad. I don’t think I am going back for the third lot of injections. I am supposed to get one Synvisc injection a week for 3 weeks. I had Monovisc before, but my insurance company (BCBS) won’t pay for it now and forced me to get Synvisc, which I will not do again! Monovisc didn’t hurt to get the injection and lasted well over a year."

Hylan g-f 20 for Osteoarthritis "Bottom line - I think the Synvisc One really helped the knee joint function, but the side effects for me were so bad I will never use it again. Severe osteoarthritis in both knees. Had Synvisc One injections in both knees early Dec 2017. The injections were brutally painful - and I’m not normally bothered by pain. Not sure I could bring myself to do it again. I was barely able to walk for 3 days, then developed constant, deep aching pain, swelling, and stiffness in both legs from toes to hips that did not respond to ibuprofen or lidocaine patches. Ended up having steroid injections twice to control the side effects. After the last one, I lost 6 lbs in 2 days, fluid out of my legs. Now it is mid-April 2018 and I can tell the side effects are becoming less - and the mechanical knee joint pain and instability are returning. It’s too bad that I experienced such severe side effects because I think the Synvisc was actually very effective with the joint mobility and pain."
