"I’m titrating off of Klonopin, a terrible drug, with awful side effects while on it and in getting off of it. My doctor has prescribed hydroxyzine 10mg for during the taper, which allows me to sleep soundly. I’m down on the Klonopin and plan to reduce it again this month. My only complaint is being tired and sleepy for the entire next day. It’s very difficult at the gym to complete my workouts. Just researched the half-life of it. It is at least 20 hours. I’m going to try taking it earlier at night. Hope this helps!"

"My 9-year-old autistic son was prescribed 10 mg of this two days ago. I was instructed to give it to him 30 mins before lay down time. My son is super energetic and is constantly, and I do mean constantly, running back and forth in our home. It takes 3 hours to wind him down. I'm exhausted, his sister is exhausted, and he is exhausted. I see absolutely no difference, we are still struggling to sleep. The only thing that has changed is in the mornings, it's almost as if he has a hangover from the medicine and cannot wake up."

"Have had chronic insomnia for over 30 years. Been taking Xanax 1 mg for 25 years for insomnia. Recently added 25mg of hydroxyzine, and I fall asleep within 15 min. Amazing. Been taking it every night for 6 months, no issues."

"I was given 50 mg for insomnia, and the first night it worked great. I took it 20 minutes before bed as the doctor prescribed, but it took about 30 minutes to start feeling any effects and a full hour to actually put me out. I slept the whole night, no problems, with only a little foggy feeling for the first 30-45 minutes of my morning. Benadryl gives me more of that 'hangover groggy' feeling than this stuff. The second night, I took it an hour before bed and didn't fall asleep until 1 am. Tossed and turned and then rushed to the bathroom thinking I was going to throw up. The feeling passed, and then I had horrible diarrhea. Then I think I started having a panic attack out of nowhere. Sweating, couldn't catch a breath, shaking. The third night I braved it and cut the pill in half. Noticed severe agitation and feelings of doom the next day. Throwing this stuff away! I'd rather deal with insomnia. Weird stuff since it's an antihistamine like Benadryl and supposed to help with anxiety. Not worth it in my opinion."

"Odd! I’m reading everyone’s comments, and I had absolutely no sedated feeling. Not tired at all! I prescribed 50 mg, then 100 mg a month later, and I gained weight as well. My Dr. promised I wouldn’t gain weight, hence why I got off my trazodone because of that exact reason… then again, every time I spoke to her (6 months in), she asked if I was a new patient. Just, do your own research and read reviews… idiot Drs!!!"

Hydroxyzine "People that are reading these and seeing all the bad reviews. It's because these people are taking way too much. I only take about 10 mg a night to sleep and it works beautifully. I sleep great as long as I take them by 9 - 9:30 pm. If I take them at 10:30 I can't wake up until about noon. But, I've been taking hydroxyzine/Vistaril for about 4 months and I haven't had a bad night's sleep. My insomnia is gone which destroyed me for many months. I am absolutely in love with this med at a very low dose of 10. You do not need any more people. This medication is strong!! You will feel slightly tired the next day but it's no biggy. Just don't take this med during the day; only at night! Good luck people, and enjoy sleeping again"

"I take 50mg at night for sleep. It's worked great. I'm still able to function after I take it, but when I lay down, I can fall asleep and stay asleep. When I don't take hydroxyzine, I wake up every hour at night. When I do take it, I don't wake up until my alarm goes off in the morning. I do tend to take 1-3 naps throughout the day, but I'm unsure if the hydroxyzine is causing this. Overall, it's worked very well."

"I was prescribed 25 mg for anxiety. I was nervous to take it, but did finally after not being able to sleep one night. I knew some people said it sedated them, so I was hoping it would just knock me out for a while. Didn't do much the first night or two, but after that hump, it has been working! I don't feel very different anxiety-wise, though... Like some said, it might take the edge off a bit, but nothing strong whatsoever. I do smoke weed, however, so it could be altering the effects for me... not sure."

"I have chronic insomnia developed after heart surgery. My old doctor suggested hydroxyzine. I've been on it for 6 years and it literally saved my life. I'm aware of the negatives if taken long term, as all antihistamines do, and the fact that it loses its sedative effect after a while as well. So I'm not taking it every night, but every 3-4 days. The minimal dose is about 20 mg. I've been doing this for 6 years and so far haven't had to increase the dose, and it works without any issues. The second night after taking it, I still get the same effect."

"I've taken this for about a month now, on and off. I went to the hospital because I was having chest pains and panic/anxiety attacks. The doctor prescribed this for me, and honestly, it doesn't really help much. It doesn't really help my anxiety, which has skyrocketed in the past few months. I'll take it and think that it's working, but ten minutes later I'm hysterical again. It does help make me kind of tired, though, so I guess that's a good thing because I usually only take it at night a few hours before bed because that's when my anxiety is the worst. I do agree that this helps me have more vivid dreams. If you have as bad anxiety as I do, I would recommend something stronger."

"I was first introduced to Atarax when I was having trouble sleeping at the mental hospital/psych ward. I was only prescribed 50 mg a day, and it didn't really help with my sleeping issues. I stopped taking the medicine, but one week I started getting really bad anxiety, to the point where I would feel like puking. I decided to take the pills again at 50 mg. It helped a lot with anxiety and pretty quickly as well."

"Honestly, this works pretty well for me. It really decreases my anxiety and gently soothes me to sleep. The capsule isn't that big and is relatively easy to swallow. I have the option to also add it to food, and it doesn't really make it taste any different, except dot a very light sweetness. This pill actually, oddly, very rarely gets caught in my throat, unless I take it with very little liquid, it's very easy to swallow. It really is also a very nice sedative for me."

"This was prescribed to me the same day I was diagnosed with depression to help aid me sleep more. I average 3-4 hours of sleep per night. The 100 mg dose prescribed to me did help give me a relaxation and heavy feeling. However, I still slept just as terribly, and in addition to waking up frequently, I was hallucinating even more than I generally did because of my terrible sleep. In the morning, I was unable to get out of bed and remained there for an additional 8 hours, waking up about every 5 minutes. My body felt extremely heavy and tired and not refreshed in any way. If a doctor prescribes this to you to help you sleep and you don't have any anxiety, I'd say stay away."

"I was taking hydroxyzine as a possible help to fight anxiety, so that I can begin to start the process of weaning myself off Klonopin. Never take them together, however. After the last couple of nights, I will never take hydroxyzine again, if that is what is causing the most bizarre dreams I have ever had in my life. Not really nightmares, but just very strange and hard to wake up from!"

"I have been on this for a little while, I have not been taking them, though. Last night I took two, one pill is 100 mg. I have always had an issue with sleeping. It was either not sleep at all or have very bad nightmares. I was so tired and couldn't sleep, so I took them. I passed out around 8 pm and woke up around 2 pm. I didn't wake up once, although I felt like death all day. I was still tired, and I felt like a zombie."

"I took an allergy shot almost a month ago. The doctor also gave me hydroxyzine to complete the treatment. My allergy finished, however, my depression got worse, and it makes me sleep the whole day. I can't function! I don't feel like doing anything. After I take my daughter to school, I go back to sleep for 2 to 4 hours, and in the afternoon, I take another 3 to 4-hour nap. It's hard."

"I have panic disorder and chronic insomnia, combined with PTSD. Normally, I take Ambien 10mg for problems falling asleep, with 1mg of diazepam for nightmares and teeth grinding related to PTSD. I normally have no problem staying asleep. This medication did help me fall asleep, but it took 90 minutes, which is still better than no sleep. After I fell asleep, I would describe that sleep as comatose sleep. I woke up about 3 times, but my whole body was completely dead weight. Was able to fall back asleep. After sleeping 12 straight hours, my family member was so concerned she came in to make sure I was okay. I could barely make words. Still, this was better than no sleep at all. I did notice that my breathing was shallow, but was too drowsy to have any anxiety or concern over it. This probably won’t be my new medication for long, I need to be able to function. Not wanting to spend my whole day feeling comatose."

"I'm surprised by the number of people saying that it hits them super strong. I have pretty bad insomnia and have tried plenty of meds for it-of course the controlled substances work wonders-but I'd rather not stay on those. I gave this one a try and it's not strong for me at all. It is sedating a little, which helps me relax a little, but still takes me forever to fall asleep. I can feel the slight sedation the next morning, but it is not incapacitating, I just feel a little more relaxed than usual. I wish it worked for me like it did for those people who said it knocked them out… Not for me, and by the way, my dose was two to three times higher. Someone mentioned gaining weight, it doesn’t affect my appetite at all."

"I'm giving this medication a 5 because it did not help with sleep at all. HOWEVER, I found this medication very useful for nausea and dizziness. I occasionally get dizzy spells with nausea. I was told that when this happens, I get small crystal formations inside my ear canal, which cause the issue. I used to take Dramamine for it, which helped some. I find that Hydroxyzine works much more efficiently. I recently was sick with food poisoning, LOTS of nausea almost 24 hours a day for nearly a week. This medication was a godsend for relieving the nausea."

"My doctor prescribed me hydroxyzine HCL 25 mg. I took it for 8 months. First, I took this medicine, then would go to bed, falling asleep real good. If I do not take this medicine, I could not fall asleep, so I was addicted to this medicine. Last week, I noted I felt so weak. I have a weakness in my muscles. When I work out, my arms are shaking. Whatever workout I do, my muscles are shaking. My advice to everyone: please do not take this med. I have a doctor appointment next week, I will find out what happened to my muscles."

"Dr. prescribed me this for anxiety and to help me sleep. The first week it worked, I was actually falling asleep, and when I would wake up, I was able to fall asleep fast again. It's been a week, and now I can't sleep. I was only taking 1 pill a night, I tried taking two, and still nothing. I haven't slept at all, and now I don't know what else to try."

Hydroxyzine "Glad for this when I needed it and glad that I've stopped it. Needed to sleep, and this helped, but now I can sleep without it and glad to be off because I had difficulty motivating myself to get up and moving in the morning. Weight gain, sluggishness, increased appetite, and a whole slew of potential bad side effects."

"For years, I've slept approximately 3-4 hours on average. I've taken a variety of prescribed medications for anxiety as well as a sleep aid. I used to lay, toss and turn, and overthink every aspect of life. I used to have gory and unbelievably crazy, off-the-wall nightmares. Now I have normal thoughts and dreams! I take fluoxetine in the morning for anxiety (which was about my fourth kind for this issue) and before bed, hydroxyzine 50 mg, Belsomra 10 mg, gabapentin 400 mg, doxepin 50 mg. It's all about finding the right mix, which for me took well over a year! The most effective way is to take it at least over an hour before sleep time so that you don't feel any repercussions the next day. I almost never feel groggy the following morning. Just rejuvenated :) I am thankful for this prescription! I was about to go mad crazy before it! Give it a full three weeks to kick in, it was worth it for me!"

"After reading your reviews, I didn’t pick up my prescription. I used Benadryl and magnesium instead. One of each about an hour before bed, and I sleep pretty good. They only prescribe hydroxyzine because it has an antihistamine that makes you fall asleep. Benadryl does the same thing without the nasty side effects."
