Hydromorphone for Pain "It is helpful in neck and spine and helps the pain in my spine and neck and helps me be able to relax without constantly having to move in odd places to sleep and sit. Therefore, I found that this helps with little side effects, unlike other pain medications that I've been prescribed in the past."

Hydromorphone for Chronic Pain "Works great, does last 24 hours at the right dose. Give the medication time if you are switching from another pain medicine to Exalgo. For myself, I was on morphine sulfate 90 mg and OxyContin 40 mg. It took almost 2 months to work at 100%. I was just about to give the Exalgo up and go back to my morphine and OxyContin, but now I'm glad I waited, it was worth the painful wait since I have such great pain relief. I take 48 mg of Exalgo now and 60 mg of OxyContin."

Hydromorphone for Pain "I received this medication on multiple occasions. Typically, the situation involved me being awake for a small surgical procedure. Though this became a typical procedure that I grew used to and at times would receive with only local anesthetics, the times I had Dilaudid were far better. It reduced my anxiety for the situation and didn't cause me to feel too out of it after the procedure was done (maybe about 20 minutes?)."

Hydromorphone for Cough "I take Dilaudid for severe chronic migraines, for which it is a godsend. I have now developed acute bronchitis (I assume), related to a recent chest cold. The Dilaudid has really calmed my incessant hacking and also helps any accompanying headache. I'm also taking ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and antihistamines regularly, which seems to help. I guess time is the only real cure — ugh!"

Hydromorphone for Chronic Pain "I was taking 80 mg/day of oxycodone (Percocet 10 mg + 325 acetaminophen per pill) and finally found a pain doctor who is a psychiatrist and a neurologist, as well as a pain management specialist and an addiction treatment specialist. He asked how long the Percocet worked for me. I said 2 to 2 ½ hours. He said based on the number of years I had taken it (4) and the increases of dosages over those years (beginning of 4 mg 4 times a day to 8 mg 6 times a day over 4 years) that I had become tolerant to oxycodone. He put me on Exalgo 32 mg extended release once a day, which is hydromorphone, which is Dilaudid, and 4 mg Dilaudid/hydromorphone (the same drug but not timed release) for breakthrough pain 4 times a day. It was pretty amazing. My pain just stopped."

Hydromorphone for Pain "I was in a motorcycle crash with a severely fractured wrist and was first given morphine, which sadly had zero effect on the pain. The ER then gave me Dilaudid, and it worked marvelously. I was in severe pain, and it knocked it out well with no unpleasant side effects, as many report having with morphine. I was put on a pain pump timed for every 8 minutes, and I was comfortable for the next 2 days before going home. I should mention, however, that my system processes pain medications VERY fast, so the same dose I take would likely be too strong for someone else."

Hydromorphone for Chronic Pain "I have been in chronic pain for longer than 25 years. I have been on OxyContin for many years. I have had gastric bypass with a duodenal switch, so my absorption rate is rather low. I cannot tolerate morphine sulfate because I need to have a clear head when I work. I switched to OxyContin, that worked well for some time, but the addictive properties were extremely high. I switched to Dilaudid and was extremely happy with the results. I was taking 16 to 20 mg every 4 to 6 hours, which is also a truckload. I did not receive any euphoria, but it brought my pain level down from a nine to a four, which is totally tolerable. I have been in motorcycle accidents and have been shot, I understand what a level 10 pain is. I highly recommend trying this medication if you have had problems with fogginess or lightheadedness. It really depends on what your goal is, mine is quality of life and the ability to work, have sex, ride my motorcycle, and to maintain some semblance of joy in life."

Hydromorphone for Pain "Took the top edge off of the pain caused by several broken bones in my foot, which was making life pretty difficult. I was left with what I'd describe as the pain from a bad bruise, but fairly easy to deal with."

Hydromorphone for Pain "I arrived at work and started to feel pain in my back and side of the abdomen. Since I have experienced this pain before, I recognized it as a kidney stone starting the trek down the urinary tract. After about 3 hours, the pain maxed out and was accompanied by nausea. A coworker took me to the ER, and after about 30-45 minutes of interrogation, they finally hooked me to an IV and provided a cocktail of drugs, including Dilaudid, Flomax (for urine flow), and Zofran (for nausea). Almost immediately, I felt a warm feeling all over and relaxed. I was able to doze for an hour or so, relatively pain-free. For me, the Dilaudid worked perfectly, but I didn't note the exact dosage, and it was a one-time thing."

Hydromorphone for Chronic Pain "I had ankle reconstruction surgery. They gave me 1-2 mg every 4 hours, and it did absolutely nothing to help with the pain. Sounds like only the IV is the only successful route. I had to ask for stronger meds, which did the trick. I wouldn’t bother with such a low dosage. It doesn’t do anything for you."

Hydromorphone for Pain "I broke my back while active duty Air Force in 2006. I found out during my L4/5, S1 fusion surgery that I'm allergic to morphine. They gave me Dilaudid, and my surgeon said he usually only gives it to men. Thank God I got it because nothing has ever worked for me. I got dependent on everything other than Dilaudid... Oxy, Vicodin, Percocet... Vicodin 2 mg keeps me relatively somewhat pain-free and able to function. Dilaudid has probably saved my life because I can sometimes understand why people give up. The Air Force had me on seven pills at once, and I was able to get down to Dilaudid. A life of chronic pain is not a life anyone deserves."

Hydromorphone for Pain "I've been under pain management since 2007 and was on 30 mg of morphine sulfate ER 3x per day supplemented with 15 mg of Percocet 4x a day. After a couple of years of this regime, I changed my pain management doctor, and he suggested going to Exalgo. I began taking 2 x 12 mg Exalgo every morning. It took about a week or 10 days to begin acting. Exalgo is better than the morphine, but the 60 pills I need each month, after my insurance pays, are really expensive."

Hydromorphone for Pain "I've been on pain medicines since I was 8, for degenerative disc disease. Starting when I was 24 and after surgery for herniated discs (L3-L4, L4-L5), I went through quite a few medicine trials before I found Ultram. This one worked great until my L5-S1 herniated and the last epidural I received triggered severe sciatic pain. After a visit to the ED, I was given Dilaudid 2mg intramuscularly and sent home with a script for the oral 2mg 1-2 tablets as needed. Between Ultram, Gabapentin, and Dilaudid (alternating Ultram during the day and Dilaudid at night), I can still keep working for a little while longer until the next spinal surgery. Ultram does not replace Dilaudid, but I found it keeps me alert and my pain level within my pain tolerance range."

Hydromorphone for Pain "After fracturing my L1, L2, L3, L4, L5 in a car accident two years ago, Dilaudid 4 mg three times a day plus Methadone 10 mg three times a day has been the ONLY combination that allows me to have a life. I've been through so many doctors, it's sad. Believe me, if I could be pain-free without medicines, I would. My pain level now is a steady 4. Before Dilaudid, nothing worked."

Hydromorphone for Pain "Was given tab form while in hospital for severe pneumonia and bleeding ulcers, vomiting blood. Worked extremely well, asleep within 30 min with no noticeable pain for 2+ hrs. No side effects noticeable. Although duration is short, I would take it again."

Hydromorphone for Pain "I gave this medication a 5 and here's why. When I was in the hospital and Dilaudid was put in my IV, it managed my pain GREAT. It kept me mostly pain-free and comfortable enough to be able to sleep at night. Wonderful for my back pain. Now, on the other hand, ORAL DILAUDID does not work at all. I thought it was just me after I was Rx'd them for BT pain, but my pharmacist agrees. So I give Dilaudid that's given through an IV a 10, but the ORAL formulation of this medication I give a 0. Again, this is not just me, my pharmacy told me they've gotten many complaints of ORAL Dilaudid not providing relief."

Hydromorphone for Pain "Palladone is a very effective medicine for pain control. My wife has MS and severe back pain from early arthritis, and one pill a day controls it just fine. Without it, she is in constant pain and can barely function. With it, she can perform many necessary tasks, such as bathing, etc."

Hydromorphone for Chronic Pain "I was experiencing pain in my hips like never before. Because I had no insurance, finding any relief meant a trip to the ER. Finally, I was approved for medication. After waiting longer than I should have for care, I saw a doctor that said I have aseptic necrosis. What is this? It is the interruption of blood supply. Without blood, the bone tissue dies and the bone collapses. Treatment is total hip replacement. I have had my right done. It was collapsed. Very painful! Now waiting on my left. That is not the end. My shoulders need replacement. I was prescribed 60 mg Hysingla ER (hydrocodone bitartrate). It was not for me. My doctor finally decided on Dilaudid 4 mg. Thank God! Thinking he needs to up my dose. Much better now!"

Hydromorphone for Pain "I've had chronic back and neck pain for over 10 years, and drugs like Vicodin, Lorcet, and others like them quit working. I was taking MS Contin for 5 years, and it started to lose its effect. I started the Dilaudid 2 years ago, and I'm still doing well with it. Without it, I would have a constant pain level of 8 to 9.5 and be unable to do anything. With it, my pain level runs 4 to 6, and I'm able to do some things. I've been unable to work for 10 years, but now I can do some woodworking with a little lathe."

For Pain "First things first, I have severe scoliosis and I take 5 (4 mg Hydromorphone/Dilaudid) a day. This medication is absolutely amazing for spinal pain and pain in general. This medication gives me a quality of life, and I’m able to do the majority of the things and activities I used to be able to do. I don’t know how or why, but different manufacturers work differently! Now I’ve only had Rhodes/Mallinckrodt Hydromorphone/Dilaudid, but in my experience, taking the Mallinckrodt Hydromorphone/Dilaudid is like taking a completely different medication altogether, and it’s like you never get any relief! Rhodes manufacture, on the other hand, actually works, and you get the relief you’re supposed to get, and it actually works for 4-6 hours like it’s supposed to! Long story short, if you get prescribed this medication, don’t get the Mallinckrodt. Get Rhodes or any other manufacturer!"

Hydromorphone for Chronic Pain "In September 2006, I was in a bus accident. I had been in such pain, nothing was working. My blood pressure would skyrocket due to the pain, nothing was helping until I got the Dilaudid IV in the hospital. I also have to take Zofran for nausea. I had undergone 5 back surgeries in 10 years. I never needed pain medication until the bus accident. They tried Toradol, morphine, Percocet, but nothing helped. I was on a high dosage of Dilaudid for 3 years until my screws were removed in November 2013. I have been going off Dilaudid for 3 years now. I take 3.4 mg tabs a day, it takes almost 1 hour to work, but it only helps the pain for about 3-4 hours. This should only be used when nothing else will. I am so thankful."

Hydromorphone for Chronic Pain "I have real pain but have been treated as a drug addict. My addiction is being pain-free so I can work and socialize with my friends and family. I had a back operation in 2000, and not long afterward, the leg (sciatica) pain came back. I was prescribed quick-release pain medication: Oxy. My new doctor weaned me off the Oxy and put me on slow-release Hydromorph Contin, and now I can function. The doctor explained that on quick-release tablets, my pain is spiking up and down all day long, you have pain and then you take a pill. Time-released capsules slowly administer pain relief throughout the day, and it works well for me. This medication has saved my life. Thank you, Dr. for first saving my life and now giving me a life."

Hydromorphone for Pain "I have had chronic kidney stones for 10 years. Over 200 stones, over 35 stone-related surgeries. Can't take Toradol, Morphine, or Zofran. 2 mg of Dilaudid IV and Phenergan eases the pain in about 30 to 45 seconds flat. Just close your eyes and sleep-immediately. It doesn't last a long time, 3 to 4 hours. However, the relief is almost instant and complete. No drug I have ever taken compares. Can make you loopy, and NO DRIVING!!! I only take it when the pain is unbearable-it is very addictive if overused."

Hydromorphone for Chronic Pain "I have severe fibromyalgia and possibly still undiagnosed endometriosis. I'm currently in the hospital (admitted), and they have been giving me 1 mg of Dilaudid every 4-5 hours for pain. It helps so much, but eventually it wears off within the 3rd hour. This is through the IV. I have been sitting up and getting back to myself. The 2 cons: super drowsiness and it is addictive. I worry about becoming dependent on it, but at the same time, it relieves my pain better than Norco."
