"So I just finished my 2nd month of this birth control. First month was great, had a normal 7-day period, but when my second month's period came around, it never stopped... I've been on my period literally all month and still no signs of stopping or slowing down. It's not a normal or light period either. It's a constant HEAVY flow. Changing super-sized tampons and passing like every hour. And I am extremely tired. Falling asleep at 6 pm every day 'cause my body is so drained feeling :("

"I began taking Mononessa April 28th, 2015. I was admitted to the hospital on June 10th with an arterial blood clot and hundreds of small clots in my right foot. It had cut off ALL blood flow to my foot. The doctors tried everything to get rid of the clots. They got the one in my artery to break up but couldn't get the ones in my foot, as some were as small as a hair follicle. On June 23rd, I was in surgery, having a below-the-knee amputation. I am 33 years old and have been an athlete my whole life. So physically, I have always been strong, so I expected no problems there. Whew, it is definitely a lot harder than what I expected. It has affected my entire life, as I have had to learn to do everything differently. No person should ever have to go through it."

"Went on the pill to clear my skin. I'm in the middle of my 2nd pack. I've been on other acne-focused pills, which are supposed to get worse before better, so I'm used to waiting it out. But this pill is not worth it. I'm breaking out in places I never have before and wake up every morning with new whiteheads and blackheads. The entire first month, I was slightly nauseous all day and extremely tired, sore throat, and headache. I also got very hungry at night, just figured I'd push through, and all the symptoms went away after a month except the acne. It just got worse, and I noticed when I was on the placebo pills, my face cleared a little. Now I need to visit a derm and most likely spend lots of money getting chemical peels and nice masks."

"Honestly, I know it's hard for anyone with a mood disorder to take hormone-related birth control, but this was the worst experience I ever had. I have moderate anxiety disorder, and after a week of being on this pill, I had severe panic attacks. Worse than I've ever had them. I couldn't control myself and was shaking and extremely dizzy, and it felt as if the world was going to end. I always get sick after anxiety attacks, but that one was the worst. I couldn't eat for a day or two. I know different medications work differently for everyone, but that by far was the worst reaction I've gotten. Going to try non-hormonal from now on."

"I agree with Rebecca. So far, no pregnancy, and I hope it continues, but I have been on the pill for 10 months, and my period is still messed up. I've been on it for over a week now. It'll come a week early, then a couple of days later. I was really moody, but it's gotten better. I was going to switch birth control methods, but am very relieved that someone else is having the same problem."

"Started taking this bc after norethindrone was making me feel 'empty' inside, and I honestly did not like it. I'm a healthy 28-year-old who doesn't smoke or drink, and it caused me to constantly feel nauseous, that's the main reason I decided to switch to something else. Even when I would take it at 10 pm, I was still nauseous all day. I started breaking out a lot, but my skin would clear up completely once I would take the inactive pills. I was also extremely hungry all the time, and once I would start the inactive pills, I would have my usual appetite back again. PROS: my period was lighter. I gave the birth control 3 months just to see if the side effects would go away, but they did not. Had my doctor switch me to a lower dose bc."

"When I started Mononessa a year ago, the first month I had headaches and cramps, but they went away after 1 cycle. Sometimes I get breakthrough bleeding, but for the last 2 cycles, I have not had any breakthrough bleeding. My skin has cleared up with no acne."

"I love this pill, and I'm surprised it has so many poor reviews on this website, but I guess it really goes to show you that it's all about finding a form of birth control that works for you. For me, Mononessa is just that. PROS: Cheap (I only pay about $10/month, but I was getting it free for a while) with no negative emotional or mental effects (I find this pill actually increases my mood!). I used to have extremely painful cramps on the first two days of my period, but that pain has dramatically decreased since taking this pill. Lingering acne on my face has also vanished. CONS: Occasional light spotting with a small breakout a week or so before my period. I have gained a few extra pounds, but I've managed most of it with diet and exercise."

"This is my first time on any birth control. My doctor originally prescribed Yaz, but after reading the reviews, I decided I didn't want to try it and asked for Ortho Tri-Cyclen. The pharmacy gave me Mononessa. The reviews were a bit better, so I decided to give it a try. The first day I took it, I was nauseous and had chest tightness and a rush of adrenaline for some reason! I don't know what happened, but I felt on top of the world! The second day was a bit better, and I felt normal. I'm on the third day now and I'm feeling a little nauseous but mostly bloated."

"I've been taking Mononessa for about a week now, so my opinion probably doesn't mean much yet. My period was still bad the first day or two, but then it got very light, to where I barely felt like I was even on it. I do get the 'sick to my stomach' feeling a little in the evenings, but it's not terrible and I haven't thrown up. Yesterday and today I have had a constant headache, which I'm assuming is coming from the pills because I don't get frequent headaches. I had a little bit of breakouts on my chin, and it has gone away already, but that could also be attributed to just the fact that pimples go away with time. I haven't had sex yet, so I'm not sure about whether or not my intimate relationship will change."

"Mononessa has been my birth control for 2 years now. I have never had a single problem with these particular pills. I have had no mood swings, weight loss/gain, nausea, etc. I feel the same exact way as I did before taking birth control... just protected! I am very strict on myself with taking it at the same time every night. I set an alarm on my phone and take it at the same time every night. I have never had any problems with the pill. I really recommend trying to see if it works the same way as it has for me."

"Mononessa was my first contraceptive. The first month was terrible. I was always nauseous, and I would get super hungry but not able to eat due to the nausea. I had my period for around 4-5 days. It was light, with minimum cramps. Month 2, my nausea started to go away and libido went up. Month 3, breasts grew and acne was gone. Never any mood changes, but weight gain of 5-10 pounds. I used it for about a year and went off of it because I stopped taking my pill on time. I switched to 3 different contraceptives until I went back to Mononessa. I used it for about 2 more years. About 10 months ago, I started having breakthrough bleeding for about 2–3 weeks during my cycle, and it just wouldn’t stop. I had a bunch of imaging done for the abnormal bleeding, and all results pointed to everything being okay. I think my body has just changed or something, but I am retiring from this pill because of the bleeding. It was still, nonetheless, an amazing run though while I was on it. PS never got pregnant!"

"I was originally on Previfem for about a year, and they recently switched me to Mononessa about a month ago. The first day I took it till the last day I took it, I had upper abdominal pain on my left side. The pain would last about 10-20 minutes, and I would rate the pain a 7 on a scale from 1-10. I thought it was coincidence, but I didn’t feel safe, so I stopped taking the pills after 2 1/2 weeks. This one also made me gain 4 pounds in the short time I had been taking it. I requested to be put on Sprintec (this was my first prescription), and I have been doing fine since!!"

"I was on Mononessa right out of high school for about 2.5 years. In the beginning, my symptoms were mild: sore breasts, nausea (when I doubled up on pills or took the pills during the day instead of at night), occasional headaches. Eventually, my symptoms worsened; I developed debilitating anxiety, severe depression, and mood swings. Mononessa completely changed who I was; it almost ruined my relationship, it ruined my grades, and it made me feel hopeless. Within two weeks of quitting, I felt like the dark cloud that had been following me for years had finally cleared. I feel amazing now."

"I had irregular periods since I started having my period. I also had terrible acne and nasty cramps. After taking Mononessa, my acne went away, with the exception of the occasional blackheads. I have absolutely no cramps while on my period, and I get my period every month for 3-4 days."

"This birth control did wonders for my stomach. Other brands made me so sick, and if I forgot and had to take 2 at a time, I was throwing up in the middle of the night. These pills do not upset my stomach at all, which is great. Haven't noticed any other side effects, maybe a little moody at times, but I think that's just my period. Also, no weight changes for me."

"I have been on this birth control for just over a year now, and I love it. It is the first pill I've ever tried, and it works great for me. I had a little nausea when I first began taking them, but it went away after a month or so. The only negative thing I have noticed is sometimes at the beginning of a new pill pack, I lose my appetite for about a week. I have gained about 5 pounds in the past year. I have no complaints other than that though. I take my pill at the exact same time every day, religiously, and have never missed a pill, and I have not gotten pregnant. Also, I am able to determine exactly what days I am going to be on my period now, which is so nice. It's been a great birth control for me!"

"I have been on Mononessa since 6 weeks after I had my son in 2014. It was fine at first, up until about a year ago, everything started changing. My face was breaking out badly. My normal face wash wasn't working at all, in fact, it seemed to make it worse. My emotions are constantly screwed up, and I mean JACKED UP. I get upset at things I wouldn't normally be upset with, get mad about it even, and stay mad (that is not who I am!). I am nauseous 3 weeks out of the month, all day, every day, and I am so tired and exhausted and flat out dizzy that now I have to lay down when my husband gets home from work so he can hang out with our little guy. Normally, I would be up doing things, making food, cleaning, playing, etc. Going to the doctor to get a different type. Would like to be on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo because I was on that for 12 years and it was great. I'm just a hot mess thanks to this pill. I never did get pregnant, so that's a plus."

"Terrible. I have PCOS and endometriosis, this is the third birth control I’ve tried and by far the worst. I’ve been on it for two packs now, my doctor wouldn’t let me be off of it after the first month. She wanted me to stick it out to see if my body would adapt to it, and it hasn’t at all. I have extremely heavy periods, which is saying a lot because I’ve always had super heavy periods naturally. Now it’s like something out of a horror movie. I get extremely nauseous and have migraine headaches frequently. On top of all this, I’ve been having problems with anxiety and depression, which I’ve never had before. This pill is toxic for me. Don’t take it."

"Everybody's body absorbs differently. My body did not like Mononessa at all. I only lasted 3 days of this pill. I had an insane reaction, my doctor even told me she's never heard anything like it. My body had an insane panic attack as I was puking. My fingers and toes started to tighten, and I could not move them. I had partial paralysis in my fingers and toes! I was crying and rocking back and forth. I never want to experience anything like it again. My body would wake me up every morning at 4:00 AM to do this every time I took the pill. I was switched to the Yaz pill, which was amazing! After the 4th year of taking it, my body got used to Yaz, and now I am experiencing a lot of mood swings and my sex drive decreasing! Microgestin, here I come!"

"I've been taking this pill for months now, and I always feel dizzy and lightheaded in the mornings. I'm not sure if this is all just the pill, but I didn't start feeling this way until I got on it. I feel like throwing up. If I smell food, see food, or even try to eat it, I want to throw up so badly. Maybe I should eat when I take it? I'm not sure, but the feeling sucks so much because I'm in high school dealing with it. It lasts about an hour and a half, then I feel just fine. It stopped for about a week, and now it's back, and I sort of felt it all day."

"I've been on Mononessa for about 2 1/2 years now, and in the beginning, I can honestly say I had no complaints. It completely minimized my periods, my acne was non-existent, my sex drive was strong, and I was able to maintain my weight well! About a year and a half ago though, things took a turn for the worse. I was getting headaches and migraines practically 3-4 days out of the week, my periods were getting heavier again, my sex drive was on and off, my face started breaking out, and next thing I knew, I had gained 25 lbs. I can't shake that weight, despite eating even healthier and working out 2x/day, which is leading to insecurity and depression. Definitely wouldn't recommend using for longer than a year."

"I have been on a couple of different types of birth control, and I have to say I like Mononessa the least of all the ones I've tried. I started taking Mononessa about two years ago when I graduated from high school because my insurance no longer covers the birth control I was previously on. My senior year of high school, I weighed approximately 125 pounds, and now I'm up to 155. I can't say the weight gain is completely from the birth control, but I think it has mostly come from me switching. I am very moody, constantly hungry, and I feel as if I keep gaining weight. Other than that, I've been taking birth control since I was 13 (so for 8 years now), and I have never had any major problems."

"So I just started this birth control almost 2 weeks ago. I am 24, and this is my very first birth control I have ever used. I was prescribed this pill to help with PCOS symptoms. I read reviews before taking my first pill and was super scared. I was expecting to feel horrible. The first 4 days I felt nothing at all except extreme sleepiness, and my appetite has gone down some; the 5th day I had a horrible headache, dizziness, nausea, and I ended up sleeping it off. I pushed the time I take the pill to later evening because I have felt so sleepy since starting this medication. I don't really see it being listed as a side effect, and I'm not sure if anyone else has the same problem, but I am pretty positive it's the pill."

"This is my first time taking birth control, and I haven't noticed any changes that are significant enough to make me stop. I was a little worried about taking it because of the bad reviews on here, but the only side effects I've noticed are a little bit of dizziness in the first week or so that I start a new pack. Nothing sitting, breathing deeply, and drinking water can't fix... (also occurs mostly when I'm hungry). My sense of smell is heightened. I would mention some weight gain, but I've had some changes in my life while beginning birth control that can contribute to that, one being a worse diet, and the weight gain is not big. My pants fit a tighter-that's all. Everything else is normal: pimples here and there, light to medium period."
