Doxazosin for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia "I started with 2 mg and went to 4 mg. Within a few days, I started diarrhea. The doctor couldn't give a reason. Went back to 2 mg and still had it. I found the answer in the side effects. I am now on 1 mg with no problem."

For High Blood Pressure "I had radiotherapy for testicular cancer in 1977 - aged 30. A camera revealed scarring to my bladder neck in about 2005, and telangiectasia (spelling may be wrong). Doxazosin initially prescribed for persistent high blood pressure reasons at 2 mg but recently raised to 4 then 8 mg per day. Higher doses may cause a pounding heart for 1 to 3 hours after waking - not nice. Also, a dry mouth and nasal congestion. But urine flow is much better when taking the drug. I should also mention that I have various allergies."

For High Blood Pressure "On 1 mg and sleep well on a night dose. I have to be careful not to move too quickly. Mornings are okay, but then by noon I get so exhausted I could fall asleep driving, at stoplights, at the table. Exhausted moving from room to room. Forget stairs. Stopped it twice to see, and no exhaustion. It’s a tiny little pill, small dosage, and happens hours after dosing. Bewildering? Took it last night and felt hollowed out this afternoon and unable to move for hours. Not a good med for me for HBP. Only positive is if you have an overactive bladder, it helps quiet that down."

For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia "Took Cardura for two years, then developed ringing in my ears. As soon as I stopped taking it, it went away. Very good drug for BPH, but not worth the ringing in the ears. Waiting for a med that does not have this side effect. MD said all have one side effect or another."

For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia "I started on this drug doxazosin 4 mg for frequent trips to the bathroom and to treat high BP. I have been taking this for around 3 or 4 years and still had to get up around 4 times a night, my BP was also still high, and I had most of the side effects mentioned here. After many visits to the doctor, he eventually agreed for me to have a sleep study, for which I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea! I have been using CPAP therapy for around 1 month now, and now I no longer need to get up at all. I no longer take doxazosin and sleep soundly every night. Worth getting checked as you might be getting the wrong treatment."

Doxazosin for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia "Have NB prostatitis since the early '90s. Started on Hytrin, which had minimal effect on urine flow. I was one of the first people on Flomax, which worked great, and you can feel it soothe you during a flare-up. The problem is they started advertising, so the cost went from $15 to $170. I switched to Uroxatrol, but stopped after a week due to lethargy, and it did not work well. Finally landed on Cardura (Doxazosin) 4 mg. Nearly as good as Flomax for flow, but does not have that soothing effect if taken during a flare-up. It is dirt cheap, and along with Lisinopril helps my BP. A side effect is occasional dizziness after sitting or standing, then suddenly moving. Only 5% retrograde ejaculation vs. 50% for Flomax."

For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia "I'm taking 2 mg of Doxazosin, and it increased my urine flow and decreased my trips to the bathroom. It also reduced my blood pressure from 150/60 to 130/60. I increased my dosage to 4 mg in an attempt to reduce my blood pressure even more, but the side effects (fatigue, headaches, blurry vision) were too extreme, so I decreased my dosage back to 2 mg. I experience no side effects at the 2 mg dosage. Overall, I think this is a fine drug for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia and mildly/moderately high blood pressure."

For High Blood Pressure "I have historically had higher blood pressure (BP), normally in the mid-130s, though in the doctor's office, it can increase to the 150s. I am 75 and have been on amlodipine and irbesartan for over 10 years and tolerated it well. My doctor recently added doxazosin 1 mg once a day. Within 3 weeks, side effects became more evident, e.g., headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, and fatigue. I was advised by my doctor to stop taking it. I have been off the medication for 48 hours and am feeling better with decreasing side effects. Still a little light-headed and tired. BP is in my typical mid to high 130s. Doxazosin is not well tolerated by my body. Still on amlodipine and irbesartan. I think I should work on weight reduction versus adding another BP med. I am 195 lbs and will try to get to 180 by year-end."

For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia "I started on 1 mg for a couple of days, then 2 mg for a couple of days. I was on 4 mg only 4 days and 8 mg for just two. At that point, I was so dizzy I could barely drive. I was actually getting motion sickness as a driver, and I drive probably 25,000 miles a year. I could actually feel my prostate shrink, but had some horrible side effects. My semen dried up to nothing, and as far as ejaculating during sex-forget it. I took the drug only a total of two weeks, and I've been off it for 10 days, and still can't get an erection. Fortunately, the dizziness cleared up after about 3-4 days after stopping. I can't find any documentation at all to show how long the drug persists in the average person."

For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia "Used for about 2 weeks, ramped up dosage from 1 mg 1st week to 2 mg 2nd week (final dosage was to be 4 mg). Had a rash with associated itching (initially thought it was poison ivy) that appeared about 3 days after treatment started and became severe during the second week. Still waiting for the rash to completely go away 1 week after stopping treatment. Did help to improve urine flow and reduced urgency feelings I was having about every 2 hours to about 6 hours. I could sleep through the night! No other noticeable side effects."

For High Blood Pressure "I have had good results using Cardura, but when using a generic, I had problems with dizziness, eyes seemed to be crossed, weakness. The pill lists lactose as an 'inert' ingredient. I have had milk allergies since I was a teenager. Since I cut the 1 mg tab of the very small Cardura in half, I was not getting much lactose, and it worked fine. With the generic at least 10 times larger, I was getting much more of the lactose to which I was allergic, so I was having severe side effects. This is the first time I have found the list of inert ingredients. I was allergic to many medicines before this, and the addition of lactose may have been the reason."

For High Blood Pressure "I'm allergic to potatoes and food dyes and have trouble with medications containing potato starch (a binder) or that are colored with Yellow #5. Doxazosin mesylate 1 mg was prescribed to me as an alternative to clonidine, which has my allergens in it. I take it at night, it helps me sleep. It weakened me for the first few days, I was doing hot outside work (Florida) and got a little dizzy and had to cut my efforts short. Eating a large hearty meal in the morning helped with the dizziness. I've been taking it for about a week now, and I feel normal again. Just take it easy with this drug for the first week or two. I read other reviews on this site, which made me comment, starting at 4 mg seems awful high, given I had side effects on 1 mg. I'm on testosterone therapy and am also finding it a bit easier to pee and fully empty my bladder."

For High Blood Pressure "Doxazosin 1 mg reduced BP from 141/90 to 135/85 over a 4-week period (64-year-old male non-smoker). But 2 mg after 2-3 weeks increased BP average to a steady 158/95, caused chest pains, arrhythmia, anxiety, and a general feeling of being unwell. It took 3 days off all Doxazosin to get back to 135/85."

For High Blood Pressure "The penny has only just dropped after talking to my daughter- a senior nurse. I couldn't understand why I felt as if I was about to faint and be woozy and nauseous when I stood up or walked. I put this down to a painfully torn ligament in my knee and the ever-so-long time it was taking to heal enough for me to walk more than a few meters. I also suddenly couldn't read the captions on TV, and my neck ached for no apparent reason. This was put down to eye drops for glaucoma. This is one of three medications for high blood pressure. I will stop taking this 2 mg dose and hopefully feel normal again. My blood pressure varies enormously, so I can't say with certainty whether this has helped or not from a medical perspective."

"I would strongly caution against taking this medication for kidney stones. I was prescribed 4 mg daily for seven days for the treatment of kidney stones. I passed the stones, returned to work, and five days later, my blood pressure dropped so low I passed out three times, I thought I was having a heart attack. I had numbness and tingling in my right arm, shortness of breath, my heart was racing, I vomited, passed out, and nearly pooped myself. I am still experiencing soreness in my heart, and my tongue is dry. Don't take this unless you want a trip to the ER."

"I am 79. Incontinence has been a big problem for the past 6 years. For the past 3 years on 4 mg/day DOXAZOSIN, urine rate = 100 ml/pee during the day. At night, 200 to 300 ml/pee-an awkward but manageable condition. Without DOXAZOSIN, urine rate drops considerably with severe (intolerable) spasms. Thank goodness for DOXAZOSIN."

For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia "Overall, a good experience. I take 1 mg in the AM and 2 mg after dinner. I am an overall healthy male of 78, 210 pounds. No side effects at all. It does reduce the frequency of urination, but not as much as I would like. It also reduced my borderline high BP to an excellent reading (112/78). I do plan on continuing to use it."

Doxazosin for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia "Haven't had problems with discomfort. Somewhat reduced flow. My main problem is urgency. Cardura worked well. I did on-off-on-off testing and confirmed its effectiveness, and it did not aggravate my low blood pressure. Now I'm on Rapaflo, my nephrologist won't give me Cardura, and Rapaflo does not work nearly as well. I'm paying a lot more and getting much less relief. Next, I plan to try something directed at shrinking the prostate."

For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia "I was prescribed Doxazosin by my PCP for BPH/Prostatitis. Let me just say it was the worst experience I've ever encountered in taking meds. My entire body felt like I had the flu. Difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or having bowel movements. The lower abdominal pain was an added feature. Certainly not the med for me. Although it did improve urine flow, the trade-off was a disaster."

"Took 1 8 mg Cardura daily. Experienced dizziness and nausea for the first 3 days but later adjusted to the medication and maintained pressure around 120/80. On doctor's advice, Cardura was discontinued and replaced with alternative medication due to excessively fast pulse/heart rate up to 100 bpm after 6 months on Cardura."

"I was on 15 mg of Prazosin daily and would wake up with awful nightmares early in the morning. My psychiatrist switched me to this medication as it has a much longer half-life. I was a bit nervous to try this med as I read it had a ton of side effects, but I had very few; during the first morning or two, I felt drowsy and weak. I take it at night, so that's probably why I don't feel the side effects others do, or I just respond better to this med. That being said, I'm thinking of going back on Prazosin as there is more research behind it and it doesn't seem to have as many side effects."
