Is azithromycin OK for men with chlamydia?

I am a 25 year old male and I just found out my ex gave me chlamydia months ago. The only way I found out is because the girl I date now gets check-ups every 3 months. Will two tablets of azithromycin 500mg cure this STD?

Official Answer

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Protection) recommends the antibiotic azithromycin (Zithromax) 1 gram orally as a single dose for the treatment of the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia. Antibiotic treatment almost always works if you and your partner take the medicines as directed.

In most cases, the infection resolves within one to two weeks.

CDC recommends that you should abstain from sexual activity for 7 days after single dose antibiotics.

A follow-up evaluation can be done in 3 to 4 weeks to see if the infection has been cured.
