Sulfasalazine for Ulcerative Colitis "I have been taking this medication for a while now, along with Azathioprine and Prednisone. Just today, I stopped the Prednisone after decreasing by a half each week. I experienced some remission of the Prednisone after I was at 2 and 1/2 pills and bumped it back up to 5. I haven't experienced any bad side effects of the Sulfazine, and my only complaint is that it is really chalky. I am 13 and was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis almost a year ago."

"After 6 months of severe flare-ups primarily in hands, knees, and shoulders, I was diagnosed with seronegative spondyloarthritis. After the first month on sulfasalazine with basically no relief, I started getting great results. Only been on this for 2 months but have had virtually no flare-ups for 4 weeks. Truly hope it continues and hope for good results for anyone facing these conditions. I had no idea how nasty RA and similar conditions were until I got it myself."

For Crohn's Disease "I took this drug every single day for 20 years and had no problems or side effects at all. I cannot get any doctor to prescribe it because they say it is too dangerous. I say they make no money, so they want you to do the IVs that cost a fortune if you do not have insurance."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "My husband has been on sulfasalazine 2 gms a day since November 2016 for his severe RA. He developed RA in January of last year and was on methotrexate for 8 months when it was discontinued due to severe bacteremia. He is also taking minocycline. He had a probable flare at the beginning of May this year, six months after starting both drugs. At that time, he also developed atrial fib that reverted on drugs. He was prescribed flecainide, which he took for two weeks but discontinued due to side effects. We blamed that for his loss of appetite and weight loss - 36 lbs in six weeks. It's now three weeks since he stopped the heart drug. I'm now thinking it might be the sulfasalazine. His RA symptoms are gone apart from a little stiffness."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "It’s been good so far since I started with the treatment 1 year ago. At the beginning, I had severe abdominal pain, and after a few weeks, I stopped the medication to ensure it was sulfasalazine causing the pain for a couple of weeks. The pain disappeared, and I started the medication again, but I took 1g for a few weeks and slowly increased to 2g. Since then, no pain or issues."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "I've taken sulfasalazine for a few years and it really worked well for my rheumatoid arthritis. Recently, I've experienced swelling in my feet and lower legs. I'm wondering if this could be a side effect of the medication or the RA."

For Psoriatic Arthritis "I have taken sulfasalazine for almost 20 years now with no side effect, and it has definitely reduced any episodes of stiffness, skin scaliness, or other conditions associated with psoriatic arthritis. I have had no side effects, other than some sun sensitivity early on, but it seems to be minimal now."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "I started this medication because my liver levels were high. Took it for a month, noticed no change in my RA. Finally had to stop this sulfasalazine...totally constipated me really bad. Took a week just to go, had stomach pain, sweating, and thought I was going to explode! Back to taking ibuprofen."

For Crohn's Disease "Came down with Crohn's disease a year ago. Dr. put me on mesalamine at $400.00 a month. Told her I needed a cheaper med. Put me on sulfasalazine at 3000 mg a day, but only $16.00 a month. Works just as well, if not better, than mesalamine."

For Crohn's Disease "Have been on several medications over the years. This being one of them. Was taken off about 9 years ago. Went to many others over the next 6 years. Was put on Lialda 2 years ago with worsening symptoms. More pain and a distended belly. Went to the emergency room for the 4th time in three months. Asked my doctor about putting me back on this. I shouldn't be having this many issues. It's been 2 days on sulfasalazine, cypro, flagyl, and zofran. Stomach is half its size. Way less pain and eating chicken and stars soup. Yeah."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "I've been taking Sulfasalazine for six months and this is the first drug that's really worked. That said, I'm suddenly getting a hive-like rash and bruising down my arms. I hate to think it's this drug, but think it likely is."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "Been on sulfasalazine now for 7 weeks, along with methotrexate. Started off at 1 daily, increasing to 6 daily by week 6. Feel rubbish, nausea, headaches, night sweats, poor sleep, and generally exhausted. RA pain has improved but not at this cost. Need to find something else."

For Psoriatic Arthritis "Needed 2500 mg per day to get to a comfortable level of my widespread enthesitis. This worked better than methotrexate 20 mg injections. Cyclosporine and leflunomide had even less benefit. No side effects."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "After being on sulfasalazine for 7 weeks, I had continually bad headaches and a spinning sensation. I went to the doctor's, who performed neurological tests. I failed each one and had to go to the hospital. I got worse and was unable to walk. After spending 8 days in the hospital and stopping sulfasalazine, I was able to walk out of the hospital, no headaches, no head spinning. I'm awaiting test results from having an MRI scan, CT scan, and lumbar puncture, but I feel back to normal."

For Ulcerative Colitis "Made me incredibly dizzy to the point I had to have my hand touching a wall when I was standing. Even sitting, everything was spinning. That was the worst side effect. The medication didn't have time to work (only on it for a few days) because the side effects were too severe."

For Psoriatic Arthritis "I started on sulfasalazine 4-5 years ago after being diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. I had serious inflammation and pain in my right hand and inflammation of some toes. After a few weeks of taking a 500 mg tablet of sulfasalazine twice a day, my symptoms improved substantially. My rheumatologist then increased my dose to 2 tablets twice a day (total of 2 grams per day). My pain disappeared and the only remnant of inflammation is a slight swelling of my right index knuckle. I have had no pain and have negligible stiffness. I have had no side effects at all. I can take the medication on an empty stomach, unlike some people. At my doctor's suggestion, I decreased the dosage a few months ago to 3 500-mg tablets per day. I had no change of symptoms, so they are now suggesting that I try 2 500-mg tablets per day (one in the morning, one at night). I started on this reduced dose a few days ago, so it is too early to tell if symptoms are changing. Overall, I've been very pleased."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "This drug has worked incredibly well for my rheumatoid arthritis. It really changed my life. However, I have had terrible side effects: chronic insomnia, headaches every day, a feeling of having a cold or flu all the time. I have kept on taking it because without it all my symptoms come back and I cannot function properly, but the side effects have greatly affected my quality of life."

"My medical conditions are polymyalgia rheumatica/temporal arteritis. I have tried methotrexate, leflunomide, azathioprine, and have now been taking 4 sulfasalazine daily for about 6 weeks, still hoping for a significant change in the pain I’m getting in my buttocks, lower back, and muscles at the back of my thighs and bursa joints. Possibly some changes, but inconsistent, my nurse says it’s 3 months before it reaches its full potential, so I’m continuing with hope! No serious side effects apart from loss of appetite and sore mouth. I’m hoping this will eventually settle along with a noticeable improvement, although I find I get extremely tired and exhausted at the moment. I’m still taking 20 mg prednisolone at the moment until symptoms settle down. Hopefully, this will work, I have few options left to try."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "I've taken this drug for at least 5 years, and it controls the swelling and inflammation in my hands and arms. I'm one of the lucky ones that has little or no pain from the disease. I've tried other RA drugs that haven't worked. I've had no side effects with the exception of loose bowel movement."

For Psoriatic Arthritis "I was recently diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis at the age of 45. Very early stages according to my doctor. He placed me on sulfasalazine. Started 1 pill per day for 2 weeks, then 2 a day the next week, then 3x per day the following week. When I made it to the 3x per day, I had a terrible reaction: severe nausea, headaches, and sensitivity to light, and I noticed I felt weak and was about to go to the emergency room. I stopped immediately and felt better within days. I'm diabetic and tested my blood sugar and did notice a massive drop on this medication. The symptoms I was having could have been low blood sugar. The sulfasalazine may have reacted to my metformin to cause low blood sugar. I was switched to Plaquenil."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "I have been on this drug for RA since 2012 and have found it generally agreeable. I am prescribed 6x500mg tablets daily but I only take 4x500mg. Anything above this dosage gives me a bad headache, so I just follow my body on this. I don't appear to have had any side effects over the years. It has helped stabilize my RA, and I live a pretty active life. (March 2024)"

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "Diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica. Symptoms were so severe that I could barely get out of bed. Had to take a heavy dose of prednisone for many months to help counter inflammation until the sulfasalazine kicked in. Took several more months, but now symptom-free. Have to have blood monitored every three months. Has been a lifesaver. No side effects other than bleeding gums. Taking 2000 mg daily."

For Rheumatoid Arthritis "I take oxycodone for three types of arthritis, and all my doctors thought sulfasalazine would help me. I'm also starting a Prolia injection on October 6th. I'm already on nausea pills, so I'm doing okay there. So far, the main side effect is that I am drowsy and hurting all over, but I've only been on one 500 mg pill for two days and I'm going to continue and hope it helps. I have terrible inflammation all over and a lot of inflammation in my feet. They are not swollen, though it's inside. I'm going to get cortisone injections in both feet on October 6th also, they've always helped, although this time my pain is more in my toes, like rubber bands are around them. Hopefully, all I'm doing will give me relief. I try to get out every day with a mask on for some walking. If I stay home, I get too stiff. I also fractured my hip in December."

For Psoriatic Arthritis "Started sulfasalazine three weeks ago. I have been feeling quite ill, flu-like, drained of energy. Mornings are like the worst hangover feeling. My joints are never like before, with constant pain. Tiredness never leaves me. Some diarrhea. Is this drug for me?"
