Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I took Bactrim once for a Urinary Tract infection. I can't remember exactly how many days I was instructed to take the pill, but I know it was over a week. Everything was fine up until the 9th day, then my entire body broke out in hives."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Bactrim is a very good antibiotic in my experience. at first i was so scared to take it because of all these negative reviews, my uti was antibiotic resistant and bactrim cleared it up within 3 days. don’t let these reviews scare you, the people who have bad reactions usually don’t follow the instructions, stay out of the sun, drink tons of water, eat a full meal before taking your dose! :)"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Was prescribed Bactrim by a walk in clinic. Shoulda known better. After 2 days, I experienced some awful side affects - chills, fevers, night sweats, insomnia, diarrhea, and migraines - for three days. I thought I was going to die. After I finished my prescription, I got this terrible head to toe rash that itches like crazy. My UTI is gone but it was not worth the rash and three days of near death. Does anyone know what I can do for this rash?"

"I hate uti's must had it bad bc cranberry 100%real juice did not work! As always this is what I'm prescribed. I hate that people had awful/bad experience with the drug. I love it, works every time!! Don't know if I'm allowed to say but it sounds to me some might have had an allergic reaction or their body plain just didn't like it! But I've never had problems and greatful for this antibiotic!!"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I woke up with a really bad UTI I called a doctor with Web MD He prescribed Bactrim for three days. I took a pill and the first day it got better. By the third day it stopped working. I went to work and I started shaking really hard and felt like I was going to faint. I went to the clinic in town and they tested my urine and said I had a pretty bad bladder infection still. So they are putting me on another antibiotic. The nurse said that they don’t ever prescribed Bactrim because it is so awful and the side effects are terrible. I was going to give this a chance but it is bad. I read all the reviews and I was like oh that won’t happen to me. It did. This is a horrible drug ask for something else"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I was prescribed Bactrim for a very painful UTI that I could not flush out naturally with water and cranberry. My UTI pain subsided after about 5 hours of the first dose of Bactrim which is great. However, the side effects are not so pleasant. I have had chills, mild diarrhea, vivid nightmares/dreams and extreme migraines. I am on day 3 of a 7 day prescription, but I am contemplating stopping after day 4 or 5 if the side effects continue. The side effects are still not as bad as the UTI pain!"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "While I understand that people who do not have many side effects from meds may think it's a mind over matter thing... some people do experience adverse effects that are seemingly unbearable. I am now myself on Bactrim. Fatigued, depressed, irritable and having nightmares. These side effects haven't gone away even with the best probiotics. I still have another week to go and so I basically have to just suck it up and do the best I can. However, to those of you who can't relate to those of us who have side effects that aren't related to the infection ... please try to be more understanding! Thank you."

SMZ-TMP DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "After the 5th pill side effects were horrendous. Slight right side facial weekness, shaking, confused and nearly paralyzed from the right shoulder thru my neck. I asked the pharmacists if there was anything I should know before taking this drug, he told me no."

Septra DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I have been having Urinary tract Infections for a while and have had them more than once. I have been given different kinds of medications to treat the infection-- even ones that made my urine turn orange and stained my underwear. I have to honestly say that the Septra DS is the best I have ever taken (I asked for the generic brand from my doctor). I know its huge-like horse pills, but after the first dose I felt relieved. The first thing I noticed was that I didn't have to urinate that often and the pain associated with urinating subsided. I never had any side effects with this medication."

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I had a UTI finished an entire prescription of macrobid. I noticed as soon as I finished the meds my UTI symptoms came back - so it didn't work for m. I then tried bactrim. The pain went away after 1.5 days of being on bactrim which was a huge relief but it is now day 4 and I am suffering from nausea, cold sweats, chills, insomnia and anxiety. It works for your UTI but the side effects are unbearable after a few days."

SMZ-TMP DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I've just finished my treatment for a urinary tract infection. I no longer have any symptoms from the infection. First 8 days of a 15 day treatment was fine with no side effects. Beginning the 9th day, I began experiencing a mild rash and itching which seem to begin on my chest and neck and migrated to my back. A bit of a nuisance but tolerable. Around the 11th day, I began to experience mild joint and muscle ache and a tender scalp around the base of the skull. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen have helped to overcome this but by the 14th and 15th day, I felt like a had the flu with no nausea but a loss of appetite. I took the last pill this morning and by 1PM, had to lay down with chills, aches and pains, headache and a slight fever."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Took Bactrim for a UTI. I had never taken it before. At day 3 I started feeling horrible, short of breath and intense stomach pain. I had never had a UTI before so I assumed this might be just a bad UTI. Day 6 I was shaking with chills and could not pee AT ALL. Went to the ER, I had a fever, high eosinophils, and a very elevated creatinine. Turns out I had an acute kidney injury from bactrim. I was given fluids and I woke up the next morning covered in the most painful drug rash. That rash lasted two weeks. Not to mention I was put on prednisone for the rash and because I had interstitial nephritis. The prednisone drove me out of my mind. Awful experience."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Never again, first 10'days macrobid. Still had infection. Put me on bactrim. I was so sick after day 5. I missed 7 days of work, I think 10 days was to much. Had loose poop, neasea every day, dizzy, loss 7 lbs in 7 days and the worst was the dry eyes and mouth. I felt like poo. I thought I would end up in hospital. It even made me depressed! Never again!"

SMZ-TMP DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I am on the 5th day of my UTI. The pressure and bearing down while urinating is similar to labor pains. I'm out of state and visited an Urgent Care Center. The NP prescribed the generic Bactrim. I went back to the Urgent Care Center after 4 days and she gave me 3 more days of the SMZ -TMP DS. I told her my symptoms were the same as my initial visit. Promised that infection would clear with the additional pills in addition to AZO , an over the counter pill to relieve the pressure. It's now day 5 and I feel like I'm on day 1. This medication is doing NOTHING for me. It's Friday and I'm sure I will be visiting another Dr. on Monday. I just want to feel like myself again. "

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I have been suffering with a UTI for at least a month and a half, I have been prescribed nitrofurantonin and Cipro 2 times...with those drugs I had still had the urge to urinate and immediately when I stopped those two antibiotics the symptoms came right back. Doctors were getting ready to send me to a urologist until I mentioned bactrim. After one dose of the antibiotic I was feeling 80% better. I haven't had any side effects yet and its day 2...These drug is God sent!"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I broke out with a rash just after day 10 of Bactrim, it was sudden and scared the heck out of me! I had a million red spots covered from head to toe (neck, stomach, back and legs were the worst) I went into the clinic and told me to stop taking it right away. So apparently I am one of those 3% with a Sulfa allergy. The funny thing is the nurse told me she also has an allergy to it. I then told a coworker about it and she also had an allergy. With my followup appointment I asked about the small percentage of patients affected-- she told me it is rising and is much higher than it used to be (related it to the kind of rise we're seeing in gluten allergies) No reason! So if you get a rash - stop taking it! Day 1 rash recover- slightly better, fewer red spots on ankles and feet. Day 2 - much improved, fewer on shoulders/neck and lower legs were cleared. Day 3 - Thighs are starting to clear as well as back/stomach. My temperature never went up during this process."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I have chronic uti that have spread to kidneys and 2 times septic. 1-3 uti per month for last 4 years. Bactrim never worked...I am told it is used frequently for gram negative bacterias. Finally a University Hospital lab found it was gram negative E. Coli ESBL. Bactrim is not usually effective on ESBL."

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "This is my first time commenting on any medicine. Anyways I almost didn't even take this medicine because all of the bad reviews but thank God I did!!! Please don't let these negative comments stop you from taking this medicine. The ONLY side effect I currently have is a bit of nausea and that's only because I do not eat much as I am on a calorie restricted diet. Maybe these people are having bad reactions because of an allergy to sulfa drugs or it is just the symptoms of the really bad UTI . IDK....I'm on these pills and have 1 more day left and it has brought my kidney pain down tremendously. I usually react badly to antibiotics but not these so thumbs up!"

SMZ-TMP DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "It helped my simple UTI almost immediately and completely but I had side effects that I've never experienced with any other drug. My face was extremely red (like a bright, painful red that felt like a bad sunburn) all over for the entire time, plus a week after I stopped taking it. I felt extremely anxious and jittery and I didn't get a good night of sleep for a week after I stopped this med. I should add that I had all these side effects when I only took the drug for 3 days! I've never experienced side effects with other antibiotics. I believe this is a sulfa containing drug and I guess I must have a sulfa allergy."

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I was put on Bactrim for a UTI. This did not work for me after 5 doses, 800mg. I felt like I had just had a baby I was so very sore. Nauseous, tired, headache (possibly from not sleeping well on it). Amoxicillin always worked for me, I wish my dr would listen to me. I know my body."
