"Went to the emergency room after feeling like I needed to urinate constantly and having extreme tenderness in the lower abdomen. No pain with urination. Was started on Bactrim on Monday evening. 1 pill 2x daily. As of Wednesday morning, my discomfort alleviated significantly. I've had very few side effects, headache seemed to be the most prevalent and was fixed with 800 mg ibuprofen. I would definitely recommend taking it after eating and drinking large amounts of water. I'm not disappointed in this medicine at all."

"I'm a clean person, but I know that if I go on long road trips and hold my urine, I will get a UTI. I came back from the mountains, 2-hour drive, and soon after, I started feeling the pain that goes along with it. I went to the doctor, was given Bactrim 160/800, one tablet 2x a day. I never saw an improvement. I went to a different doctor four days later and was given Cipro 500 for 14 days. Although I felt relief, along with Trader Joe's pure cranberry juice, I never felt better. Here I am today with a sudden UTI."

"Was prescribed Bactrim for a UTI. Terrible side effects! I thought I had caught the flu, but when I went into the doctor, she said it was just a reaction to Bactrim. Fever (super uncomfortable, sweating and chills), body/joint aches and pains, extreme fatigue. Felt so sick and run down I didn’t want to get out of bed. The day after my last dose, I developed a bright red rash everywhere, which felt like it burned and itched. I had the worst week ever with this drug."

"First time prescribed Bactrim for a mild UTI. Second day I had flu-like symptoms. After day 4, I was feeling so poorly I went to the ER, where I was told just flu and to rest and to finish Bactrim so it will clear up UTI. Day 5, fever of 105, rushed to the hospital where I passed out. Completely dehydrated and organs were showing signs of sepsis. I was in the ICU unit for 3 days. The diagnosis was “allergy to sulfa.” However, that’s not really an allergic response. I think it causes the body to dehydrate faster than normal, and my actual problem was intense dehydration. Bactrim was banned in the UK after a number of people died. I’ll never take it again."

"So I am on day 2 out of 5. First day was awful; 20 mins after my first dose, I started getting extremely itchy on my throat, neck, and face. My bottom lip flared up, and I got really nauseous. I turned the fan on, drank a bunch of water, and lied down. I was going to discontinue it, but after a good hour, all my symptoms went down. I decided to try it again this morning, and I'm feeling fine! Still a little burning when I urinate, but it is so much better now. Hoping this will work."

"Prescribed Bactrim at the clinic for suspected UTI. 3 pills later - swallowing and throat issues which lasted a couple of months, digestion problems, loss of appetite and weight, horrible anxiety for 4 months, just lessening now at 5 months. Horrible med for me. Never again. Makes me never want to take another med."

"Please make sure you are not allergic to this drug. I had no idea I was and ended up with horrible allergic reactions. Shortness of breath, heavy chest, rapid pulse - it was at 120 beats per minute for 2 days straight, now it comes and goes. It has been 4 days, and I am not better. I really have felt like an anxiety or panic attack is happening all the time."

"I was prescribed Bactrim for a UTI, and after one dose, I immediately developed a splitting headache, followed later by weakness, body aches, chills, fever, slight nausea, cough, and sore throat. I feel as if I have the flu. I suppose the medication did do what it was supposed to do because the UTI feels as if it's almost completely gone (I'm sure it isn't, but at least it doesn't hurt). I will say I don't think the side effects are worth it. I'm in a lot of pain and discomfort, and I think I'll be going to the emergency room just to be on the safe side."

"Prescribed to my 77-year-old mother for a UTI. She was prescribed twice a day for 10 days, and she took it for 8 days. It has almost shut her kidneys down, and she has fluid around her heart and lungs. ICU doctors say it started because of this medicine, Bactrim. DO NOT GIVE TO ELDERLY PEOPLE!!! I wish I could sue the doctor for giving her this poison."

"I took Bactrim 500 mg tablets twice a day for 4 days and felt fine. Day 5... not so much. I got extremely dizzy and super anxious about literally nothing. Don't tell my doctor, but I'm done taking them. Ha. Not really worth it. I only have 1.5 days left, so maybe I'll take it right before bed, but we'll see..... I'm not giving it one star because my symptoms did improve."

"I had the worst experience with Bactrim. The first day, I had a 101.8 fever, chills, uncontrollable shaking, anxiety, rash, and fast heartbeat. The next day, I was extremely achy, nauseous, and could not eat anything the whole day. I stopped taking it after the second day, and my symptoms are getting better after a day, but I still feel cruddy and have a bad headache."

"I had a UTI and was in a lot of pain. I was prescribed Bactrim. Never again. After 3 days, my anxiety flew through the roof. I couldn't sit still, and my mind was racing. It was so scary for me. I made sure it is written on my profile that I cannot take this med. It took 2 days to get out of my system."

"I was prescribed Bactrim for a UTI. Everything was going well on days 1-2, on day 3, mid-day, I began with chest tightness and noticed a difference in my breathing. I felt as though the end of my lungs/rib area was extremely sore. It sent me to the ER as I was uncertain what could be causing it. CT scans, tests, and $3,000 out of pocket later, no results showed, which I'm thankful for! They eventually chalked it up to the medication. I immediately stopped it and went back to normal after a few days. Weird stuff! I gave it a 5 out of 10 because although it was only three days, the Bactrim cleared up whatever it was! Potent stuff."

"I was prescribed this medication for a UTI. After 1 pill, I woke up feeling nauseous, nonstop vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, headaches, insomnia, dizziness, weakness, loss of appetite, fever, chills. I am currently on day 3 and will not be taking this anymore. I have zero improvements, which is to be expected after only 3 days. I was told to take 2 pills daily for 10 days. I can’t take the extreme side effects, and I don’t see why a doctor would prescribe this, with this many horrible side effects. I thought I had a stomach bug or food poisoning until I decided to look up the side effects and realized it’s the medicine. My kind was 800/160MG TB. I don’t recommend."

"Worked very well. By the second-third pill it was feeling better. But the doctor gave me the DS 2x a day, and I think it's a bit much. By the 4th day, I felt really horrible. Tired, foggy-headed, and lethargic towards the evening. Not going to take any more pills. Did clear up the issue, though!"

"I put myself on Bactrim thanks to the internet, 3 or 4 years of hematuria, Dr. said mild infection, okay, Keflex, Cipro, Macrodantin, Rocephin, not sure of spelling, none worked. Bactrim seems to have nailed it, but I will wait and see, took it for 12 days, no side effects at all. Old school is better than the new all-purpose meds, here's hoping."

"Avoid at all costs! I read the reviews and was pretty nervous to try it. Well, the bad reviews were right. I was really hoping I would be one of the people with a good experience of this drug. That was sadly not the case. I took ONE pill, and within 3 hours, I had an extremely high heart rate, was very shaky, very lightheaded, and had shortness of breath. I ended up having to go to the ER to get the Bactrim flushed out of my system. I’m probably allergic to it, but it’s concerning how many other people have had bad results. Please, if you have another option, take the other option. From my experience, I would only take this as a last resort. I hope your experience with Bactrim goes better than mine did."

"TLDR; This drug can be a nightmare. I finally went to the doctor for my mild UTI. Water just wouldn't kick it. After my first dose, I was immediately thankful that I had gotten it. To my surprise, after taking the first dose, it seemed my infection had spread to my bladder. That night was awful: bladder spasms and private area burning like fire. Before I took the medication, I only had slight burning with urination. The next day I pushed water like crazy and thought I was getting better. The meds made me speedy. I was in a fog but was getting things done. I felt very sickly. I thought, again, that it was a good thing I got the antibiotics because my infection must be super severe to make me this ill. That night, I got very short of breath and my heart was pounding. I thought I may have caught COVID. I tried to sleep. Through the night I was awake with awful thoughts of death and severe anxiety. The next morning, I woke with my heart pounding and severe anxiety. I felt like death still."

"I was prescribed Bactrim for a bladder infection/UTI. Took only 1 pill and felt jittery and lightheaded about 30 minutes after taking. Then began to feel slightly itchy and by the nighttime my skin felt like it was burning, along with a splitting headache, shooting pain in my neck, and insomnia, unable to sleep, complete brain fog and anxiety. Just from one dose, I didn't take any more and 5 days later still having a splitting headache and random pains throughout my body. I would not recommend and ask the doctor for an alternative to Bactrim."

"Today was the first day I took this medication. Two hours after, I experienced joint pain, blurred vision, back pain, a headache, chills, fever, nausea, cough, and sore throat. This was in addition to my already severe urinary tract infection symptoms, which I was sent to the ER for the night before, including severe pain in the pelvis, achy back (kidneys). Although symptoms of a severe UTI can also be fever, pain in the flank (pain that runs along the back at about waist level), chills, and nausea, I believe the medication gave me the additional symptoms. I was fine all day long until around two hours after taking the pill. After about 3 hours, symptoms increasingly went away. I am not sure if the pills are working or if they wore off."

"I took the full course, seemed fine. The next day, I was rushed to a hospital 2 1/2 hours away from my town because no hospital in the cities near mine would take me. I had Stevens-Johnson syndrome and was in the hospital for a week with severe problems with every mucous membrane on my body. Also, can’t have MSG and hydrogenated soy protein. There are other antibiotic allergies and sensitivities in my family."

"I went to CVS MinuteClinic for symptoms of a UTI. I was prescribed Bactrim two times a day for three days. Within an hour of taking the first pill, I had horrible aching back pain around the area of my kidneys. Upon waking up, my whole body felt sore, especially my legs. The same symptoms have persisted throughout the time I’ve taken the medication. I take my last pill in the morning. (This medication also makes you have insomnia, so I'm up at 3 AM). Luckily, I only have to take 3 days' worth of it, or else I would have thrown it out. The medication also cleared up my UTI. So that’s one positive in a pool of negatives."

"I’m a 20-year-old female with a history of gastrointestinal issues. I was worried about taking this drug because of all the negative reviews, but I had no problem with it. Took it for three days, experienced mild nausea and headaches, but my UTI symptoms were gone by day two. I also take 10 mg of amitriptyline daily and was worried about using them together, but the side effects didn’t disrupt my schedule at all. Every time I took a pill, I drank a whole bottle of water (16 oz) and ate a full meal. I think that is the most important part, because when I had a light meal, I did experience some stomach pain, but nothing severe. Also, I was very gassy, but that wasn’t really an issue, LOL. I’d recommend Bactrim."

"I was prescribed Bactrim 800/160 mg for 5 days, 2 times a day. Day 1, no problem, just lost appetite. Day 2, no appetite, kidney pain, hands got shaky, and was very anxious. I considered stopping the prescription. Day 3 (5th pill), within an hour of taking it, my heart rate got up to 176, and I was gasping for air. I called 911 because it's just myself and my 2 young children here. Paramedics ruled it as a panic attack. Never had this problem, so I know it's from the medication. Absolutely will never take this again. I'm currently still on day 5, so if anything else crazy happens, I'll update. I wish these didn't continue releasing medication for 12 hours... The anxious feelings are still coming in waves. Trying to drink a lot of water to flush this poison out of my system. Currently having no more UTI symptoms, so I think it cleared the infection. Giving it a 3 because it did what it was supposed to, quickly, but definitely NOT worth the side effects."
