For GERD "Have bile or GERD refluxing over the last 3 months. Super sore, burnt esophagus, and I can actually feel the acid spitting up my chest. Doc says likely bile since I have a metallic taste too. Started the liquid 4 times a day two days ago. So nauseated, off balance, itchy face, but doc said stay on and call him in 4 days. I hope the side effects go away because it is making me miserable."

For Stomach Ulcer "Just saw the doctor a few days ago, and I'm having trouble swallowing and have been having severe nausea and acid reflux. I was already taking Nexium. She thinks my thyroid is pressing against my esophagus, plus she thinks my ulcers have come back. She put me on sucralfate. I hate this medication. I am so full of painful gas now, and I'm extremely weak, more weak and fatigued than I was before, and how in the world are you supposed to take this four times a day on an empty stomach? I mean, when are you supposed to eat? And I am so incredibly dizzy taking this. I'm going to tell her that I don't want to take it anymore. I will say that it has helped with the acid reflux, but I don't know if it's worth everything else."

For GERD "I've been literally choking on this pill twice a day for a week now. I’ve heard you’re supposed to just crush it into a slurry, but I don’t always have a lot of time in the morning, so I’ve just been swallowing it. I take HUGE drinks of water with the pill to try and ease it down, but it gets stuck in my throat EVERY TIME. It is so scary and painful and has made me throw up twice now. How have they not changed this? There are people out there who have much more difficulty swallowing than me, and I can’t even imagine what it’s like for them to try and take this pill. If you get prescribed this pill, DO NOT TRY TO SWALLOW IT. Just listen to everyone else and crush it and mix it into a slurry. It’s absolutely ridiculous."

For Stomach Ulcer "I was given the liquid form of Carafate w/Lidocaine in the ER yesterday since I have had horrible diarrhea (prior I had normal BM's). I went to the ER with severe upper abdomen pain that came in waves radiating to my back x5 days, not able to eat/drink anything with nausea. I could feel the weight dropping drastically. I was advised (just by speaking to me) by a doc that I had an ulcer. No testing of any kind, e.g., labs, physical exam, urinalysis (as I also complained of severe low back pain that has been debilitating and getting progressively worse, which the two may not be related), CT's, etc. I was then given a disgusting liquid (Sucralfate, which I could barely keep down). I was then discharged, diagnosis: gastritis!"

Sucralfate for Stomach Ulcer "I've had multiple ulcers, and each time I was prescribed Carafate, it made the pain 10x worse. Really bad nausea and headaches. I still have never found relief from an ulcer."

For GERD "Just started this Rx in tablet form. I have GERD and the doctor thinks I may also have an ulcer. I’m waiting for a GI appointment. Prescribed at 4x a day, I’ve been able to take it 2x a day: bedtime and early morning. I set my alarm an hour before I’m to be up, take my pill, and go back to sleep. This “2x a day” schedule seems to be working. Coughing starts 30 minutes after taking, followed by a headache on top of my head and slight nausea. It will finally pass. Overall, though, I just don’t feel very good. After reading the reviews, I’m going to try crushing and taking it that way. Maybe I won’t end up coughing. The good side is-this stuff works! Zero pain, zero heartburn. Thank God! I’ve been on Nexium for years, insurance won’t pay for any PPI anymore, pharmacy won’t let me pay out of pocket. (It’s the law, I’m told.) I’ve tried other over-the-counter PPIs to no avail and eat Tums like candy. I don’t take any other medications-thankfully."
