For High Blood Pressure "I am a 63 year old male with severe hypertension. In my attempt to eliminate the number of prescriptions I was taking to bring the levels down to 'normal' , my doctor decided to prescribe spironolactone. The result was dramatic and it brought my BP down to normal. After a few months I began experiencing a pain in my breasts and after a few more months I noticed the pain and sensitivity increasing. My breasts were also increasing in size. I stopped this particular drug because I was concerned at the ever increasing pain, the increasing size of my breasts and no indication that either side effect would diminish. I am now on a quest to find an alternative to spironolactone without the disturbing side effects."

For Alopecia "I'm quite ambivalent about Spironolactone. I started taking it in October 2019 for alopecia and at 100mg it does it's job. My hair loss stopped and a lot of what I lost grew back. However, since I went up to 100mg I started having panic attacks and general anxiety, which I didn't experience before. When I lowered the dose to 50mg the anxiety disappeared, but so did my hair, so I stayed on 100mg. I also have to watch my potassium intake, if I eat too much of it I get arrhythmia. I still recommend to try it if you suffer under hair loss and if nothing else worked for you. It is a life long commitment though."

For Acne "I am a 40 year old woman who's been struggling with mild-moderate and cystic acne in varying degrees since I was 11. I've also had very oily skin. I've been prescribed all the usual medicines: antibiotics, birth control pills, various topical creams and really, nothing has made any significant improvement. When I turned 40, 4 months ago I decided after doing extensive research, to ask my doctor about spironolactone. Since I'm not looking to become pregnant, she thought we could give it a try. So I've been on 50mg once a day for 4 months and this medicine has completely changed my life. My skin is not oily anymore and my cystic acne in my back is gone. My face is clear of acne. No side effects. But why didn't any dr/dermatologist prescribe this for me years ago?"

Aldactone (spironolactone) for Alopecia "Worst decision taking Aldactone for alopecia. Took for 10x months and it left my hair worse, it is brittle, dehydrated I have severe mood swings. Thought it worked initially but then stopped. I would really make sure you are willing to take risks with this before starting. Dread shed occurs in beginning and when you stop. Exhaust other measures like vit c iron l lysine b12 selenium. Get your ferritin checked."

For Hirsutism "I've been on 100mg for about 3 months now. I haven't had any negative side effects. I rarely get that fuzzy feeling, like when you have low blood sugar; only if I'm dehydrated or get up fast. I already drank a lot of water, so haven't noticed a change in my water intake or need to use the bathroom. Buuuuut I also haven't seen any benefits yet! My body hair is the same, facial hair is the same, skin the same. Not sure if I'm going to go on 200mg or go off of it. I'll update at a later date with anything new."

For Hirsutism "I have never written a review before but since I find reviews so helpful I figured I owed it to the universe to give back. I started taking 25mg of Spironolactone twice a day for about two months for both excessive hair growth on my face AND for some hormonal acne. I have been taking it in conjunction with laser hair removal and let me say it has been LIFE CHANGING. I am not longer scared for someone to stand under me or to have my bf touch my face. I have been liberated from the chin hair dictator and I am so thankful. Also, I have noticed a sizable improvement in my skin. My derm suggests I up a dose to get full improvement in my skin and I am not taking 50mg twice a day. I have had no noticeable side effects! Highly recommend it"

For Hirsutism "I started Spironolactone 3 weeks ago at 100 mg. These past weeks I have experienced nausea, tiredness, headaches, and dizziness. 2 days ago I actually fainted and fractured my jaw by smashing it on a counter I fell on when fainting. I am now undergoing surgery for my jaw and having teeth removed. I have never experienced this before. My blood pressure has gone from 120/85 to 85/55 in the past 2 days. Spironolactone has caused me new medical conditions."

For Acne "On October 30th, 2019 I started Spiro and Yaz. I had started on accutane in 2018 for minimal acne, but in September of 2019, after I started taking Lo Estrin Fe, I broke out worse than I ever did before accutane. Breakouts continued weekly, even after starting Spiro and Yaz, I broke out on Wednesdays (weird, I know) and then my skin would heal until the next week when I would breakout on Wednesday. As a 18 year old that’s insecure to begin with, this took an immense toll on my self esteem and prevented me from feeling confident. However just when I thought I was going to breakout yesterday (Wednesday Nov, 2019) my acne cleared and I didn’t have typical cystic breakouts covering my jawline, forehead, chin, and mouth. Be patient and wait out the horrible symptoms initially(the first week I was beyond nauseous and sad) but after that it has been smooth sailing. I’m sorry if you’re going through the purge, keep in mind you are still beautiful and everything heals in time!"

For Acne "I was prescribed spironolatone 50mg for my acne breakouts around my chin and jaw line some other areas also. I use this in combination with aczone and they are a great team together... Amazing and fast results. I also have very oily skin along with big pores and it has decreased my pores and I have very little oil now. I'm amazed and very happy."

For Acne "I wanted to share my experience with others who suffer from acne because these reviews were the only thing that kept me hopeful during my initial stages of spirolactone. I'm a 30 year old woman who suffered from back acne since the age of 21. I tried EVERYTHING (besides accutane) to clear it up. Nothing got rid of my problem. I felt like the older I got the worse it got. I had cystic acne all on my upper back, neck and shoulders. It was embarrassing and humiliating. I've been on spirolactone for 3 months and I could cry I'm so happy. The initial breakout was bad but I stuck with it and I'm so happy I did. I'd say I'm 90% clear. If you are a woman suffering from hormonal acne you need to try this, it's a life saver!"

For Hirsutism "I'm a 31-year-old woman with PCOS, and I've dealt with acne and excessive facial hair growth for years. I've been on metformin for around 2 years now, which was supposed to help my PCOS symptoms (in addition to being borderline diabetic), but I never really saw any results until my doctor put me on spironolactone in January 2017. Since then I've been taking a very low dose, only 50mg once a day, but it has done wonders for the hair growth! Though I would advise others to wax your facial hair rather than shaving it. When the hair is removed from the follicles, the spiro stunts its regrowth. For me, if I wax it once a week, when it does regrow it comes back barely half as thick as it used to and it's nowhere near as noticeable."

For Alopecia "Have been taking generic spironolactone 100mg 2x day (morning and night) for acne and hormonal hairless (female pattern, testosterone related). It has greatly reduced hair loss And skin has been clearer also. Libido has been affected somewhat, not sure how much though. No significant side effects yet. Much better than birth control pills that I stuck with for years, as I knew hair loss would intensify when I stopped them and boy did they ever."

Aldactone (spironolactone) for Alopecia "I started taking spiractin 50mg 10 months ago for alopecia and saw instant results. In 2 weeks my hair stopped shedding and I grew back all the hair I had lost in past 2 years. However it just stopped working 4 months ago and now I’m shedding over 200 hairs a day. My dermatologist doubled the dose to 100mg 2 months ago but unfortunately it’s made zero impact :("

For Acne "I've been taking 100mg twice a day for about 7 or 8 years now for cystic acne (I'm 45 years old). I tried antibiotics and multiple topicals and washes prescribed by my dermatologist. Spironolactone is the only thing that decreased my cystic acne by about 80%. I also used Epiduo for spot/preventative treatment of acne on my chin but it really dried out my skin. When I got my Clarisonic 4 or 5 years ago, it was like the miracle I had been hoping for! I use Clarisonic in the mornings and just wash with a washcloth and Cerave foaming facial cleanser and use Cerave lotion for my skin care. I actually get complements on my "beautiful" skin now! I hope you have as great of an experience as I did with Spironolactone!!!"

For Gender Dysphoria "After switching from cyproterone acetate to spironolactone, I found that apart from increased urination, it works almost as well to decrease androgen levels. It does what it is supposed to, and for that, I'm very happy!"

For Acne "Been on spironolactone for probably 2 or 3 yrs now. We have always had a love/hate relationship. Rest assured, spironolactone will work for most people when it comes to combating acne (all acne is caused by hormones to some degree) but like any other medication, spironolactone is not without side effects! Over the years I have decreased my dosage and sometimes tried to completely stop taking it due to: weight gain (yes you initially lose it but just wait!), thinning hair, depression, dehydration (I believe this side effect is worse for me due to other medicines I take with it), slower metabolism/fatigue, and evidence that this medicine was totally prematurely aging my skin! Initially it was 25mgs 2x a day but now I just take 25mgs a day."

For High Blood Pressure "I have suffered secondary hypertension ever since I were in first grade. I am now 73 and been on 2 to 4 blood pressure meds ever since I was 21 years old. And in the last two years I have been in the ER 10 times with blood pressure way in the danger zone. One episode left me with a aneurysm on my heart. After my Nephrologist took over my case, he change my meds and added spirolactone which immediately dropped my pressure to normal. Thank goodness someone knew of this med, as my heart Dr. and my primary Dr. for years had no idea what to do."

Aldactone (spironolactone) for Edema "I took chlorthalidone and amlodipine for several years for high blood pressure (HBP). The latter caused unsightly leg edema. Nine days ago the chlorthalidone was replaced by spironolactone, and potassium supplements were stopped. My BP remains OK, and since the change, the edema has decreased noticeably."

For Acne "I have suffered from moderate to severe acne for years. I have always had bad breakouts that coincided with my cycle in my teen years. I assumed this would go away once I got older. However, it seemed to get worse throughout my mid-twenties. I am now 28. I would get cystic acne mostly around my mouth & chin area. I always had 4 or 5 huge red pimples. Not only unsightly, they were painful & would last for weeks. I tried everything - cleansers, masks, creams, toners, diet, antibiotics, & bc (10 ). Accutane was the last on the list...until Spironolactone appeared. My doc prescribed me the min 25mg dose per day. The 1st week I noticed a change! My skin cleared right up & I have had ONE pimple in the past 3 weeks. I am amazed. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!"

For Hirsutism "I’m a 27 year old African American woman and I’ve been taking Spiro (100 mg) for hirtusim off and on for 4 years. I’d go off of it because it caused a significant amount of weight loss. I was already slim to begin with so weight loss was not something I could tolerate. But when the excessive hair growth came back about 6 months later I stayed on for another year. Fast forward to 4 years later weight loss is no longer an issue but I feel like the hair on top of my head is a lot thinner than it was before. Starting in January I’m thinking about taking Spiro in conjunction with Hairfinity. I’ll provide an update at the end of March! Wish me luck ladies"

For Acne "I never write reviews, but for this medication I feel obligated to warn about the side effects. I was a healthy 22 yr old, and started getting cystic acne from the mirena. I then was put on 75 mg Spiro everyday. All was well for the first few months, and then I started noticing progressively worse digestive issues. I couldn't eat more than a handful at a time, and some days it would hurt so bad to eat that I wouldn't. I lost 25 lbs in a matter of 2 months, and was diagnosed with gastroparesis about 7 mos into taking spiro. After I stopped the meds, I was able to eat again within weeks. Be careful, and if you start having stomach issues please consider that spiro could be making you sick."

Aldactone (spironolactone) for Acne "I am almost 46 and for 30 years have tried everything for chronic hormonal acne (antibiotics, Accutane, all the skin care lines, Retin A). This medication has been a miracle for me. I still get little blackheads / small pimples around my menses, but are barely noticeable. I continue on with my Retin A treatment which helps that. I haven't noticed any side effects. I do watch my potassium intake (no bananas)."
