For Alopecia "Due to medication, lost hair every time I brushed, every time I washed, seemingly every time I touched my head!! Now, due to spironolactone, I no longer lose hair!! My plumbing is happy too. My doctor suggested I take Biotin as well. I know it will take many months for me to see new growth, but that's okay. My skin looks great too!!"

For Acne "Before starting this, I had very mild acne, mostly caused by wearing a mask for COVID and other factors. I was put on 100 mg of spironolactone in addition to Differin and clindamycin. I had previously had success with Differin and clinda, so I know that is not what went wrong. My symptoms were dry skin, thirsty, dry lips, peeing a lot, and dizziness. A month after starting spiro, my skin was broken out like crazy. I was told this was just me 'purging.' Fast forward to 5 months later, and I have seen way more harm than good. While my forehead and nose remained clear, my chin and jawline had acne like I had never seen. I would constantly get deep, painful cysts that itched. I have tried so hard to love this drug, but I know it is not right for me. I must be allergic or something. I am going to quit spiro, and I will update if my skin improves because I cannot take this anymore."

For Hirsutism "I have never written a review before, but since I find reviews so helpful, I figured I owed it to the universe to give back. I started taking 25 mg of Spironolactone twice a day for about two months for both excessive hair growth on my face and for some hormonal acne. I have been taking it in conjunction with laser hair removal, and let me say it has been LIFE CHANGING. I am no longer scared for someone to stand under me or to have my boyfriend touch my face. I have been liberated from the chin hair dictator, and I am so thankful. Also, I have noticed a sizable improvement in my skin. My dermatologist suggests I up the dose to get full improvement in my skin, and I am now taking 50 mg twice a day. I have had no noticeable side effects! Highly recommend it."

For Alopecia "I had been experiencing hair loss for about 2 years. I finally decided to do some research and found out about spironolactone. Spironolactone slows down the hair loss but does not help hair regrowth. I decided to try it out and went to a dermatologist to have this medicine prescribed to me. The doctor started me off with 50 mg once a day. But during my research, I found out that the effective dosage would be 200 mg a day (divided). So, I decided to do 200 mg a day. I am happy to say that my hair loss has completely stopped after two weeks of taking this medicine at 200 mg a day. I am also using Rogaine 5% twice a day. My problem is that I cannot find a dermatologist that will prescribe me a stronger dosage."

For Hirsutism "I've been on 100 mg for about 3 months now. I haven't had any negative side effects. I rarely get that fuzzy feeling, like when you have low blood sugar; only if I'm dehydrated or get up fast. I already drank a lot of water, so I haven't noticed a change in my water intake or need to use the bathroom. But I also haven't seen any benefits yet! My body hair is the same, facial hair is the same, skin the same. Not sure if I'm going to go on 200 mg or go off of it. I'll update at a later date with anything new."

For High Blood Pressure "I was on this medication for a short time for blood pressure and had noticeable breast growth on one side and increased tenderness on both sides and had to stop taking it because of this. It works very well for helping control my blood pressure, but I could not deal with the side effects."

For Acne "I wanted to share my experience with others who suffer from acne because these reviews were the only thing that kept me hopeful during my initial stages of spironolactone. I'm a 30-year-old woman who suffered from back acne since the age of 21. I tried EVERYTHING (besides Accutane) to clear it up. Nothing got rid of my problem. I felt like the older I got, the worse it got. I had cystic acne all on my upper back, neck, and shoulders. It was embarrassing and humiliating. I've been on spironolactone for 3 months and I could cry, I'm so happy. The initial breakout was bad, but I stuck with it and I'm so happy I did. I'd say I'm 90% clear. If you are a woman suffering from hormonal acne, you need to try this, it's a lifesaver!"

For High Blood Pressure "I have suffered secondary hypertension ever since I was in first grade. I am now 73 and have been on 2 to 4 blood pressure meds ever since I was 21 years old. In the last two years, I have been in the ER 10 times with blood pressure way in the danger zone. One episode left me with an aneurysm on my heart. After my nephrologist took over my case, he changed my meds and added spironolactone, which immediately dropped my pressure to normal. Thank goodness someone knew of this medication, as my heart doctor and my primary doctor for years had no idea what to do."

For Alopecia "I've been taking spironolactone 50mg for 6 months, my skin cleared up dramatically almost perfectly. It's not greasy anymore. My hair feels softer but is still coming out a little, although it does feel much healthier I don't see any amazing regrowth. I've decided to up the dose to 100mg because it doesn't hurt anymore. It was a real curve coming from 25 to 50. It hurt whenever I jumped right into 100mg when I first started. I don't pee that much either even now on 100mg, I think my body has a tolerance for it. Nothing hurts really but my stomach (not belly, but stomach right below the heart) that went away in time, the pain was more of a depleted feeling than a painful feeling. I had a little brain fog in the beginning, not anymore."

For Acne "I was prescribed spironolactone 50mg for my acne breakouts around my chin and jawline, some other areas also. I use this in combination with aczone and they are a great team together. Amazing and fast results. I also have very oily skin along with big pores, and it has decreased my pores and I have very little oil now. I'm amazed and very happy."

For Hirsutism "I'm a 31-year-old woman with PCOS, and I've dealt with acne and excessive facial hair growth for years. I've been on metformin for around 2 years now, which was supposed to help my PCOS symptoms (in addition to being borderline diabetic), but I never really saw any results until my doctor put me on spironolactone in January 2017. Since then, I've been taking a very low dose, only 50 mg once a day, but it has done wonders for the hair growth! Though I would advise others to wax your facial hair rather than shaving it. When the hair is removed from the follicles, the spiro stunts its regrowth. For me, if I wax it once a week, when it does regrow, it comes back barely half as thick as it used to, and it's nowhere near as noticeable."

For Alopecia "I'm quite ambivalent about spironolactone. I started taking it in October 2019 for alopecia, and at 100 mg it does its job. My hair loss stopped, and a lot of what I lost grew back. However, since I went up to 100 mg, I started having panic attacks and general anxiety, which I didn't experience before. When I lowered the dose to 50 mg, the anxiety disappeared, but so did my hair, so I stayed on 100 mg. I also have to watch my potassium intake, if I eat too much of it, I get arrhythmia. I still recommend trying it if you suffer from hair loss and if nothing else worked for you. It is a lifelong commitment, though."

For High Blood Pressure "I was prescribed spironolactone 25 mg to take with my hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ 25 mg) for high blood pressure and low potassium levels. Just after I took spironolactone with my HCTZ, my BP was 136/77. Hours later, I started having severe uncontrollable whole-body tremors and bad headaches. I checked my BP, and it was 167/84. I checked BP 15 minutes later, and it was 180/93! Spironolactone was stopped. I wonder if this raises cortisol levels."

For High Blood Pressure "Since I’ve started this drug... I hardly need to pee very small amounts. I’ve tried drinking more, over 2.5 liters. Doesn’t seem to make any difference. I feel very unsteady. I’m gonna stop taking it, hopefully, the doctor has something else."

For Hirsutism "I started spironolactone 3 weeks ago at 100 mg. These past weeks, I have experienced nausea, tiredness, headaches, and dizziness. 2 days ago, I actually fainted and fractured my jaw by smashing it on a counter I fell on when fainting. I am now undergoing surgery for my jaw and having teeth removed. I have never experienced this before. My blood pressure has gone from 120/85 to 85/55 in the past 2 days. Spironolactone has caused me new medical conditions."

For Acne "On October 30th, 2019, I started Spiro and Yaz. I had started on Accutane in 2018 for minimal acne, but in September of 2019, after I started taking Lo Estrin Fe, I broke out worse than I ever did before Accutane. Breakouts continued weekly, even after starting Spiro and Yaz. I broke out on Wednesdays (weird, I know), and then my skin would heal until the next week when I would breakout on Wednesday. As an 18-year-old that’s insecure to begin with, this took an immense toll on my self-esteem and prevented me from feeling confident. However, just when I thought I was going to breakout yesterday (Wednesday Nov, 2019), my acne cleared, and I didn’t have typical cystic breakouts covering my jawline, forehead, chin, and mouth. Be patient and wait out the horrible symptoms initially (the first week I was beyond nauseous and sad), but after that it has been smooth sailing. I’m sorry if you’re going through the purge, keep in mind you are still beautiful, and everything heals in time!"

For Acne "I've been taking 100mg twice a day for about 7 or 8 years now for cystic acne (I'm 45 years old). I tried antibiotics and multiple topicals and washes prescribed by my dermatologist. Spironolactone is the only thing that decreased my cystic acne by about 80%. I also used Epiduo for spot/preventative treatment of acne on my chin but it really dried out my skin. When I got my Clarisonic 4 or 5 years ago, it was like the miracle I had been hoping for! I use Clarisonic in the mornings and just wash with a washcloth and Cerave foaming facial cleanser and use Cerave lotion for my skin care. I actually get complements on my 'beautiful' skin now! I hope you have as great of an experience as I did with Spironolactone!!!"

For Alopecia "Have been taking generic spironolactone 100mg 2x a day (morning and night) for acne and hormonal hair loss (female pattern, testosterone related). It has greatly reduced hair loss and skin has been clearer as well. Libido has been affected somewhat, not sure how much though. No significant side effects yet. Much better than birth control pills that I stuck with for years, as I knew hair loss would intensify when I stopped them and boy did they ever."

For High Blood Pressure "This medication brought my dangerous blood pressure levels down to normal or normal borderline, but definitely not the triple digits from before. The side effect I am experiencing that bothers me is dizziness. I am going to try to drink more water to see if this helps. I also have noticed a lack of appetite."

Spironolactone for Edema "I took chlorthalidone and amlodipine for several years for high blood pressure (HBP). The latter caused unsightly leg edema. Nine days ago, the chlorthalidone was replaced by spironolactone, and potassium supplements were stopped. My BP remains OK, and since the change, the edema has decreased noticeably."

For High Blood Pressure "For those of you who have used spironolactone for years and now received a different brand, and it's not working, you are in the same boat with all spironolactone users regardless of diagnosis. Apparently, the manufacturers of Par and Actavis decided to stop making this drug, and no one can figure out why. The manufacturer Cadista has stepped in and is producing a brownish round pill that seems to do nothing for people who really need spironolactone for their health. Call the FDA, call your physician, call your pharmacist, and request that the spironolactone manufactured by Par or Actavis, which is an oval, white pill, be reproduced so we can get back to being healthy again! Not to scare you, but Canada is also having some of the same shortages."

For High Blood Pressure "I was taking Indapamide for 25 years to control my blood pressure until last year when I developed Afib and my blood pressure rocketed. After struggling with various beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, and an ARB, I decided life was not worth living due to the side effects and went back to Indapamide only, whereby after an initial large increase of my blood pressure, this came down to a reasonable level (138/95), but really that is not the best. My GP has recommended half a 25 mg tablet each day together with my Indapamide and my blood pressure is now 125/74, so success. At present, I have no undue side effects, but only time will tell, so I am happy at this. Going back for a blood test in two weeks."

Spironolactone for Alopecia "Worst decision taking Aldactone for alopecia. Took for 10 months and it left my hair worse, it is brittle, dehydrated. I have severe mood swings. Thought it worked initially, but then stopped. I would really make sure you are willing to take risks with this before starting. Dread shed occurs in the beginning and when you stop. Exhaust other measures like vitamin C, iron, L-lysine, B12, selenium. Get your ferritin checked."

For Hirsutism "I’m a 27-year-old African American woman, and I’ve been taking Spiro (100 mg) for hirsutism off and on for 4 years. I’d go off of it because it caused a significant amount of weight loss. I was already slim to begin with, so weight loss was not something I could tolerate. But when the excessive hair growth came back about 6 months later, I stayed on for another year. Fast forward to 4 years later, weight loss is no longer an issue, but I feel like the hair on top of my head is a lot thinner than it was before. Starting in January, I’m thinking about taking Spiro in conjunction with Hairfinity. I’ll provide an update at the end of March! Wish me luck, ladies."

For Hirsutism "I started to get hairs on my face and neck when I turned 24 years old. After that, it just got worse to the point of having a full beard. Very embarrassing. I did laser hair removal, which didn't help since they didn't know what was causing the growth. I have been taking 100 mg of spironolactone twice a day now for around a year. There are less hairs, my leg, armpit hairs, etc. grow at a normal rate now. I still have a fair amount of unwanted hair, but it is fine and blonde now rather than coarse and black. I can grow my chin hairs out to wax them without people staring at me like I'm a mutant now, so that's a plus. I will never stop taking these pills and may eventually see if my doc will up the dosage again."
