Risperidone for Bipolar Disorder "I've tried a lot of different meds, my favorite by far is Lamictal, but it stopped working after 10 years. I started Risperidone a year ago. It makes me calm, I hardly get angry, I have no anxiety, and I have not had an episode since I started it. I feel great on it in general. The downside is that it makes me lazy, I'm so chill now that I'm totally comfortable just sitting on the couch. I feel relaxed and balanced, but without the anxiety, I have no reason to get up and 'run it off'. The biggest and worst issue I have with it is the damn weight gain. I've always been super fit and thin, but now I have a belly that I just can't get rid of. If it didn't work so well for my mood, I would get off of it immediately to lose my weight. I would still recommend it and I won't be stopping it anytime soon."

Risperidone for Bipolar Disorder "This has to be the best medication (at least for me) for bipolar disorder, paranoia, and anxiety. I have had bipolar episodes since my teens, now in my 30s, and every time I have a bipolar episode, this medication almost works instantly. What I mean by works instantly is it snaps me out of my mania and unwanted thoughts quickly. It does take a few weeks to work fully, but if you are someone who suffers from bad mania, this is the right medication for you. Luckily, I did not experience bad side effects from this medication. I have had some muscle stiffness in my neck, some twitching and muscle spasms, and slight weight gain. Also, my menstrual cycle was thrown off. Additionally, it helped my somatic symptoms, and I was able to live my life again. A+++med"

Risperidone for Autism "I have recently started my 25-year-old son with autism on Risperdal. He has taken it when he was 13, but due to the combination of antidepressants and no improvement in his violent behavior, we stopped. However, he did improve verbally. After he refused to take antidepressants after 9 months of treatment with improvement made, he deteriorated over the next 7 months. We insisted he try Risperdal, immediate improvement. 3 weeks in, and he is more verbal and calmer with no more aggression. He is sweet and happier again."

Risperidone for Bipolar Disorder "Risperdal saved my life. I was hospitalized two times with psychosis, and this is what they gave me. It took a few weeks to really kick in. At first, I was tired. I have been on the medication for almost five years now. I am able to live a normal life, although I still have some depression. I take 4 mg of Risperdal, which I just increased from 3 mg because at times I would have mild hallucinations or delusions when tired or the like. They are almost non-existent now, really just coming on if I have caffeine. I did gain weight, but not meaningfully so. The trick is to watch your calories and exercise as much as possible. I would recommend trying this for severe psychosis. I also take 600 mg of lithium, which seems to help my mood. I like to think that the lithium helps protect the brain from the damage Risperdal can cause. Without Risperdal, I wouldn't be here by now. Every day is a blessing and a gift!"

Risperidone for Autism "This drug changed my life. It turned down my emotions just enough (I'm on 0.5mg) that I could actually function in normal society. Thanks to it, I am now in college (when I was diagnosed at 16, I was failing half my courses) and doing phenomenally well. I can't say this will work for everyone, but I must say it's exactly what I needed. Thank you Janssen Pharmaceutical, you have given me a future."

For Paranoid Disorder "I have had three serious psychotic events in my life. The first was Postpartum Psychosis and hospitalization, the second was a breakthrough of my medication about 16 years later, at that time, I was taking Mellaril and Zoloft. I gradually weaned off the Mellaril because I was concerned about tardive dyskinesia. I was fine for the next eight years and had another psychotic break while under some extreme stress. At that time, my physician added Risperdal, and I had a rapid disappearance of the anxiety and paranoia (it took about a week) and was back to work in about a month. I have continued in a high-functioning position as a university professor since that time for the last twelve years, with no additional episodes."

Risperidone for Autism "Honestly, this medication was awful, and the doctor who prescribed it failed to mention that it made it impossible to think. I think it's abusive to give this medication out for people who are not schizophrenic. It's just another way for people to take away autonomy and to force us autistic people into harmful therapies that deny us our humanity."

For Autism "My son has Autism Severe learning disabilities. I really didn't want him on any medication, cause of side effects. But my son was having such bad meltdowns of past abuse with his respite and school. He would punch his both ears and face, head, throw, and smash things. I have tried to stop him, and he's attacked me, punched me, and scared me. It's very upsetting seeing your son having meltdowns. My son was put on risperidone 0.5mg, one in the morning and one in the evening. I can honestly say he's never been so calm. His concentration is amazing. It's taken his anxiety away. He's much better in crowds when walking. When he's out and about, he's fine with noises he couldn't cope with before, like noisy bikes and children screaming. Calm, talks more, sentences FAB!"

For Post Traumatic Stress Disorder "I take it for PTSD and severe anxiety. It's a lifesaver for me. I sleep like a baby bear. I have no more intrusive thoughts. It increases my self-esteem and life is fun for once. It didn't just give me my life back. It's given me the life I never had due to 20 plus years of refusing treatment because I thought I could do it on my own through exercise, diet, and positive thinking. The only side effect I have is regret from not taking it sooner."

For Autism "My autistic 15-year-old son was extremely violent. I had to take him to the hospital three times in a 24-hour period. He was prescribed a few different medicines, but none worked, except this one. He is himself now, without aggression or irritability. I immediately noticed he could wait and concentrate. It is a godsend."

Risperidone for Bipolar Disorder "This medicine is the best thing that ever happened to me. I had tried several medicines over the years and nothing helped what I thought was stress and anxiety. After I had my baby at 27, I thought I was worse than ever and assumed I had postpartum depression. I was surprised to be diagnosed as bipolar. The medicine worked right away, and I have never been happier. I am a better person, mother, and wife now."

Risperidone for Autism "I have grown breasts from this pill. I swear if they don't take me off this, I'm gonna cry. I take a 10 mg tablet, and my chest size has grown, and I'm skinny. I'm only 18. Why can’t autism be more important for researching a cure than cancer?"

Risperidone for Schizophrenia "I was admitted to the hospital and prescribed Risperdal. I recently went from 3 mg to 2 mg. I've been having really bad swallowing issues on this med, and we're hoping the lower dose helps with this. Otherwise, a great medicine for me. I've been active in the community and able to control some of my unusual thoughts. I would recommend this medication, but be cautious of the side effects. I've been on the med for 2 years now. I gained 40 lbs and remarkably, I was able to lose 50 lbs since starting Risperdal."

Risperidone for Bipolar Disorder "Risperdal was the first medication I ever tried for my bipolar type one, and it was awful. They started me out on 8 mg, which is unusually high, it kept me from being manic or depressed, but also completely stopped me from being able to feel any emotion. I was a zombie. I honestly felt like if my best friend died, I'd feel absolutely nothing, it was that bad. Would not recommend. My current psychiatrist also says she hates Risperdal, if that helps any."

Risperidone for Bipolar Disorder "This medication saved my life. Tried several different medicines over 10 years and none have worked better than Risperdal. I take escitalopram as well and have seen fantastic results. If I miss a dose, I can tell very quickly within a few days as I don't sleep and feel really agitated and angry at the least little thing. Really helped control my mood swings, and this combination has been great for me."

For Anxiety "I have been on Risperidone, 3 mg every night, before bedtime, for 8 years. It worked better in the beginning when I first began with the name brand. However, it still works very well. I have to take it once a day right before I hop into bed, or else I get Akathisia (Severe inner restlessness and inner torture). That is the one and only thing I hate about antipsychotics. That and weight gain. All in all, it takes away racing, disorganized thoughts, and calms the mind. It works to help emotions too. Good for anxiety. But don't go overboard with the dose. 9/10!"

Risperidone for Schizophrenia "I smoked a lot of marijuana as a young man. Me being a late bloomer, I think it affected my brain chemistry. One day I felt an explosion in my head, after that I started hearing voices and became really paranoid. I finally admitted that I needed help, after seeing that I couldn't hold a job, snapped at people, starting fights with people for no reason, insane thoughts and a brain I couldn't control, I was prescribed Risperdal for schizophrenia, Ativan for anxiety, and benztropine for side effects, all these medications for what my kind doctor called a brain disorder. Stopped paranoid thoughts, delusions, gained social skills back. No libido, 15 lbs weight gain in a month, but feel sane again. Seems to work for 7 hours, then paranoid again."

For Tic Disorder "I have been taking this medication for over a month at the 0.25mg dose, once daily. I have moderate facial tics that become more severe with anxiety, with my eyes, nose, and mouth twitching at least several times a minute. My psychiatrist prescribed me risperidone, and I read online that many people suffer weight gain from this medication. I have had no weight gain at all and no change in appetite, most likely due to my low dosage. From the first dose I took, I noticed my tics were reduced significantly, and I remember thinking, 'this is what it feels like to be normal!' My tics are almost entirely gone, and I used to be reminded of my tics every waking second, but now half of the time I forget I even have tics. This drug saved my self-esteem."

For Bipolar Disorder "I got insomnia on risperidone. I used it for two months and when I stopped taking it, my insomnia didn't go away. Now it's 3 months since I quit risperidone and I still have severe insomnia. No medicine helps me to sleep. I cry all day and night. I hate my life. I wish I could sleep an hour. When I do sleep, it's just a few minutes and I wake up. I wish I was dead. Do not take this stuff. Think if there is a chance you change your brain to be insomniac forever and suffer the rest of your life, would you take the chance? Please, I beg you, don't do this to yourself. Learn from me."

For Anxiety "I was given risperidone after being admitted to the hospital last week because I couldn't take the anxiety anymore, even though I was already on medication. I couldn't eat, had gag reflexes, and unnatural thoughts. I had terrible morning anxiety and had to take lorazepam. After one night in the hospital, they gave me this drug, and the next morning I woke up calmer and hungry. They sent me home with a 0.5 mg, but the pharmacist made a mistake and gave me 0.25 mg instead. So for the last week, I have been still battling anxiety. Last night, I took the correct dose, and today I was able to stay home by myself and not rush out to be around people. I ate more and got stuff done around the house. Today is my first day back at work. I look forward to better days as I continue on this drug that saved me."

For Schizophrenia "I’m helpless as I can’t think anymore. There is no more excitement! There was a time when I’d feel happy about nature. I loved going for walks, when I was in London, I’d go out. I was in bliss. Suddenly I’m sinking... it’s helping me so much by removing psychotic thoughts (all gone), yet it’s ruining my happiness. I ask: Is there an alternative? I want my happiness back, I want to be able to exercise again, I don’t want that fear of going out, I want to be able to think as I read... I’ve lost interest in movies, music, studies, and sports. Has anyone felt so tired on it? Has anyone been sprawled on bed like me the whole day doing nothing?"

Risperidone for Mania "My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's several years ago. As the disease progressed, so did her paranoia, anxiety, and sundowner's syndrome. She was put on Celexa, which only made her sleep all day and have horrific nightmares. The doctor put her on Risperdal, and her behaviors changed overnight. She became manageable and helpful, and no more sundowners. Her sleep pattern improved, and the night terrors ceased. She has passed recently from heart failure, but our last year together was much improved."

Risperidone for Schizophrenia "Just my experience; your mileage may vary. Odd tunnel vision as it takes effect. After about 2 weeks, expect your wife to be very “unsatisfied.” If your job involves mental math or coding, this will become much more challenging. It dulls your emotions even beyond what your horrible affliction will. I became an impotent robot with no processing power. The cure, at least for me, was worse than the disease. I have since learned to ignore, or at least recognize and not take them as absolute reality. Mental gymnastics and proper training are equally effective; the side effects of Risperdal are life-altering in a bad way."
