For Pain "I was recently prescribed MS Contin for chronic pain from two failed shoulder surgeries and awaiting a third surgery. I had been taking Percocet for three years, but it had become ineffective. This medication is really a wonderful solution. I am relatively pain-free now. It does take an hour or more for it to take effect, even on an empty stomach. I have had no side effects. It is more expensive, but since it is so effective, I don't mind that. I am a retired PA-C and understand chronic pain and pharmacology, so I say thanks to Drugs.com for the free access to all you need to know about your medications, whether you are a practitioner or patient."

For Chronic Pain "This is a lifesaver. I have many conditions that leave me in pain 24/7. I've been taking oxycodone for years and never got much relief, if I did, it wasn’t very long and made me feel buzzed, I guess you would call it. My doctor switched me to 30 mg MS Contin, and it has been a blessing. I don’t feel that buzzed feeling and have level pain relief all day and night. This medication is more natural than all the other opioid drugs. This is made from the poppy and not a lab."

For Pain "1st day of MS Contin 30 mg twice a day. I have been taking 6 Percocet a day and still in substantial pain. So far with this new drug, I am still in pain, but very manageable. I am heading for lower back procedures and possible surgery, hope to be off or at least reduce pain medicines over the next few months, but for now, I will take manageable pain."

For Pain "This medicine is great. I have been taking pain medicines for 20 years, and this is the best so far. I take 3 x 60 mg in the morning and 3 x 60 mg in the evening and haven't been in pain for the last 2 years."

For Pain "I've had 2 back surgeries for herniated disks. The second surgery wasn't successful, and I have constant nerve pain along the right side of my leg, all the way to the ankle. MS Contin ER has helped a great deal. I take 45 mg every 8 hours. I also take MS Contin Immediate Release for breakthrough pain (15 mg up to 4 times a day). All in all, thumbs up."

For Pain "I started taking MS Contin 60 mg this week. I was taking Methadone 120 mg a day for over 5 years. I am having some trouble with the changeover, but after 3 days, I am getting better. I also take Oxycodone 15 mg up to 4 times a day for pain. My doctor started me on 60 mg 2 times a day, then told me to double it. Still having some trouble with the withdrawals from Methadone, but I hope this will work. So far, it's okay. I am being treated for chronic pain from a laminectomy and spinal fusion without hardware (Failed Back Syndrome)."

For Pain "I have been on MS Contin for about 6 months now, and I use it as my primary pain medicine. It has helped me more than any other pain medicine that the doctor has tried on me. As I have already stated, it is my primary pain medicine, taken every 12 hours. I also take oxycodone 30 mg, 4 times a day for the breakthrough pain."

For Pain "I was put on 45 mg of this drug a couple of weeks ago, and all is going well. I was given Norco 10/325 to help with the breakthrough pain. The morphine combined with Norco is hard for me to take together. I am taking 15 mg every 8 hours, and it seems to be doing the job. There are times I feel fine when the 8 hours is up, but it says not to miss a dose."

For Pain "I have 9 herniated discs (4 in my neck and 5 in my lower back). Took Vicodin 10/660 for 2 years, then Norco 10/325 for 1 year. 6 to 8 a day finally got the MS Contin with my Norco, and life is way better - can play with my daughter now."

For Pain "I have degenerative disc disease and had spinal fusion and stenosis surgery in my lower back. For years, I have been on Norco 7.5 mg/325 (1 pill 4x a day as needed), and for the most part, that took care of my pain. Roughly the past year, my doctor decided to reduce the Norco by half and added MS Contin, 15 mg, 1 pill twice a day. It didn't help much. For me, it takes the MS Contin three hours for me to notice any difference, and it only helps for about six hours, leaving three hours before I can take another. He upped it to 30 mg in the morning and 15 mg at night. Still not seeing anything different. This Friday, I am going to ask him if I can just go back on the Norco at my old regiment. It seemed to work better for me than these extended release meds."

For Pain "I suffered burst fractures, nerve damage, spinal cord damage due to a bad car accident in September '09. Not only has MS Contin worked well, it's relatively inexpensive compared to other extended-release medications. People talk about how great the Fentanyl patch is for chronic, severe pain. But you can't control the amount of medicine entering your system, it's unpredictable, certain brands are being recalled because of defective pouches. Plain old morphine. It's been around forever, and nothing works as well. The only problem is I've grown tolerant and needed two increases in the past year. I guess that will happen with any medication. With my latest increase (100 mg 4X daily), I've been able to cut down on the oxycodone by half!"

For Pain "MS Contin was good at relieving pain, not as strong as Oxycontin, which I was used to. They are different, and I read in a 2007 Physician's Desk Reference guide that they are 45-55% or more absorbed by the human body, where Oxycodone was 60-85% absorbed in the human body. Also, it made me more tired than Oxycodone. Secondly, though both medications made me tired, it seemed like the MS Contin made me more tired and lethargic than Oxycontin."

For Pain "I have muscle atrophy and have been taking MS Contin for about a year now. I started taking 15 mg in the morning and 15 mg in the afternoon. That stopped working. So we went to 30 mg in the morning and 15 mg in the afternoon. That stopped working, so now I just started taking 30 mg twice a day, and so far, it's working. I have a lot of pain, but we will see how long this dose works for. I think it has a lot of side effects as well. But I couldn't live without it."

For Pain "During a very bad period of face pain from trigeminal neuralgia, I call those flares. This one was particularly awful, and I was afraid to even speak because of the sensitivity. I went to the ER, and they prescribed me seven MS Contin 30 mg pills. It worked really well. I was a bit, I'd say, sedated, but I could drink water and eat food without it feeling like someone took a glowing hot drill and put it through my nose and eye. It didn't get rid of the pain, but it made it much less triggerable, and it made the pain less intense when I, for example, answered a question. When I was a child, I got attacked by a dog. This isn't related to the pain from TGN, but it puts it into perspective. During the attack, half of my face was torn off by the teeth-not deep enough to damage anything or bleed heavily, but still was the color of raw steak. The pain of the dog ripping a layer of skin off half of my face was an 8 compared to the neuralgia at that time, which was a 10. After it was a 5, and this med probably kept me from suicide, 10/10."

"I was blown up in Iraq in May of 2008. I have lost all my bones inside my hand along with 2 inches of my femur. I have more than 17 screws running up and down my left leg. The majority of my nerves are severed throughout my leg and left arm. From my experience with MS Contin, it was great but slowly diminished. I was taking 60 mg twice a day. After a few months, it lost its effectiveness. My doctor decided to go with OxyContin and morphine instant release. 100 mg of OxyContin and 60 mg of morphine sulfate immediate release. I was told you should switch every 3 months so you don't build tolerance."

For Chronic Pain "I was dizzy really bad first dose and felt weird. Had trouble seeing, but I finally got some sleep. Those feelings only lasted 2 doses. I was on 15 mg ER. It hasn't helped a bit, just a little. I've been on pain meds for 7 years. They wanted me on ER because I hurt 24/7."

For Chronic Pain "My pharmacy was filling my MS Contin using the manufacturer Rox for years. It would last me IR 30mg 6 hours. They switched to a different manufacturer called Asc, and now it only lasts 3 hours. I do not like this new manufacturer."

For Chronic Pain "I have been in chronic pain for many years. I have C1, C2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 of the spine, bone spurs, sister after on my spine, spinal stenosis, scoliosis. L5 is degenerative, degenerative disc disease, degenerative joint disease, multiple sclerosis. My hip is cracked on both sides. I have six kinds of cysts on my head, there is no gap on my head. Every bone is cracked, Debbie is cracked. Both knees are bad, nerve damage in my hands and on my legs. I have been on methadone 60 milligrams for about 5 years and oxycodone 15 milligrams 4 times a day for breakthrough pain. That worked great, but they switched me to morphine sulfate ER 60 milligrams today. I'm not going through withdrawals, but it still does not help my pain. Has anybody after switching from methadone to morphine sulfate?"

For Chronic Pain "I find this form of medication to be an extremely poor waste of money. I am able to control my severe chronic pain much better with the immediate form. Instead of having to try to adjust my dosage to match my level of pain, which changes in a short period of time, I am using a form that may take hours to stabilize. This is somewhat like using a blunt object rather than a sharp knife to deal with my pain."

For Chronic Pain "Hopefully you don't have Kaiser. Kaiser is doing everything in its power to take geriatric patients off any type of pain medicine. Do acupuncture, do physical therapy, I'm 64, tried all of that already to no avail. Including ESI and NRB. Watch out if you do, get a new doctor right away. My doctor quit Kaiser for this very reason, but I cannot go back to him until I'm on Medicare."

For Pain "I took MS Contin 12 mg/day for a medical condition, which has since been resolved. When I ran out, I decided (against the advice of my pharmacist) to quit cold turkey. Symptoms were worst on day 5 of withdrawal: knee pains, nausea, hot flushes, severe insomnia, malaise, and have now (day 9) gone down to just nausea and malaise. I have not, and refuse to, seek any other habit-forming drugs from my doctor."

For Chronic Pain "Was on Avinza for years until they stopped making it. The Embeda does not work. Before that, I always had problems with the tablet form of morphine. Since the shortage, I have been forced to take morphine brands that have raised my blood pressure on top of bad. I have never, ever had high blood pressure until I used Sun Pharmacy and Rhodes Brands. I just had a bunch of heart tests at the cardiologist and everything was fine: blood pressure and all. Then, approximately one week later, I was given this brand of morphine and it all started. These two brands are all they have around here. Now, since I see an NP, I need to find a doctor who will change my med. I take 30 mg three times a day for failed fusions in my back and neck. It works well, but Oxycontin years ago worked better, and so did the Duragesic patch. But those are dangerous. Funny thing, insurance pays less than half of the cost, so morphine is not expensive. Mine says cos Good Luck to all."

For Chronic Pain "I take 100 mg 2 times a day and it helps my pain, but I take something for breakthrough pain. It works for me, but I would start at a lower dose and stay at a lower dose as long as I could."

For Pain "I have been on many different types of pain medicines for over 10 years now. I have degenerative nerve damage since a young age. Also crushed, herniated, and bulging discs in my entire lower lumbar region. I have been in unmanageable pain many times before trying MS Contin. This seems to give me the best possible relief while still allowing me to function in society. The pain is now under control, and I do live a normal life. I take Soma, a muscle relaxer, and that seems to help when I overdo things. I am prescribed 4 of the 60 mg in the a.m. and 4 in the p.m. without side effects."
