"I've been taking opioids for knee surgery, and they are the worst for causing constipation. Despite taking stool softeners, senna laxatives, drinking prune juice daily, and a high-fiber diet, I could not get anything more than a tiny pebble to come out, and that was after straining so hard I got dizzy. My 'roids were freaking out. Enemas sort of worked, but they were very painful, and I never felt completely empty afterward. Since I'll be on meds for a few weeks, I can't rely on them as a solution. After about 5 days of rocks for guts, I finally found some irritable bowel forums with people swearing by milk of magnesia. So my husband ran to the pharmacy for me. About 18 hours later, the sky opened up and the angels sang. Such relief!"

"Best laxative out there! I have chronic constipation due to psych meds. I've tried every laxative out there and have a very healthy, plant-based diet, etc., but nothing has helped. Milk of Magnesia is the only effective remedy I've found. Best to take it on an empty stomach-it doesn't seem to work if you're full of food-and drink lots of water. Within 2 hours of taking 4 tbsp, I had 2 bowel movements. No cramps or bloating or pain or diarrhea. This stuff works great."

"I was constipated for about 5 days due to taking diet pills. I took MOM at about 10:30 pm at night. I woke up at about 5 am, rubbing my belly and thinking I can't believe this stuff hasn't kicked in. When I tell you that thought hadn't even left my mind yet, it kicked in and with a bang!!!! I barely made it to the bathroom. I felt so much better, even though I almost pooped on myself!!!!"

"For a couple of days, I wasn't eating very well, and I noticed I wasn't using the restroom regularly. I went and got fruit and stuff with high fiber, and I was still stopped up except for occasional little stools. After not being able to go fully for a couple of days, I started getting very bad abdominal cramps, and I started vomiting. I went to CVS and bought Milk of Magnesia, took three tablespoons of it, and 30 minutes later, I got diarrhea. I feel better, my stomach doesn't hurt anymore, and I'm not vomiting. I would recommend this to anyone with constipation problems, but be prepared for multiple toilet trips."

"I take medication that makes me forget about eating during the day, but I don’t take it on the weekend, so I consume a lot to make up for the nutrients I am missing. I ate all weekend and had a normal stomach ache, but I was constipated this time. Took 30 ml MOM first, 7 hours later I had relieved a small amount, so when my mother came home, she set out 45 ml and I took it. This morning, I have had to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes for 3 hours. BE CAREFUL WITH THE DOSING! Start small doses and give it time to work."

"I have been constipated for 20 years due to a brain injury/nerve damage. Bottom line is I don't have a bowel movement without 'help' ever. I've usually gone around 2-3 weeks without having one. Anyway, this stuff is a lifesaver. I've tried everything. It's reliable, and it doesn't hurt like other laxatives do. There can be slight cramping, but that's to be expected when you haven't pooped in 20 days. Anyway, I take it on an empty stomach, followed by a large glass of water (or three). The more water you drink, the more violent it will be, but I don't care as long as I feel better. I take it during the day, not before bed. This way, there are no accidents, and it works much faster (in the time it takes to start 'going' and the time it lasts)."

"I was not feeling well and had stomach pain. I went ahead and took Pepto-Bismol, and it made me feel worse. Within minutes, my pain became stronger, I felt bloated and discomfort. After a few hours in pain, I went to the market and purchased MOM. Within one hour of taking it with a glass of water, it worked. The results were AMAZING! Everything was gone, and I felt very clean!"

"Dr. took me off of a medication that caused constipation, and I still couldn’t go for a month. I was getting so weak, and I didn’t know what to do. I prayed about it, and Milk of Magnesia was what I got. Yes, it worked! I feel so much better. I think medication gets stopped up in the intestine and stays with you until you get it out. I’m so happy about that. I took 4 tablespoons, and it worked within four hours, but I have diarrhea and I'm not sure if I’m supposed to have stools yet. I will wait and see. This was my first time using it in a very long time. Hopefully I’m no longer stopped up and will go regularly now, but if I need to use it again, I will."

"I am 23 years old and have suffered from stomach issues and constipation most of my life. In the past several years, I have struggled with IBS-C and have really bad constipation during my flares. I have tried just about everything to relieve my constipation, specifically prunes, Miralax, Metamucil, extra fruits/veggies, and lots of water. Nothing seemed to help, and I was getting frustrated! Finally, I was at the store buying some Gas-X when I came across Milk of Magnesia and called my mom to see what she thought. I ended up buying it and took the 2 tablespoon dose at night with an 8 oz glass of water and went to bed. I did feel the gas, and my stomach rumbled all night, but no action until I got up and ate. It definitely cleared me out!!"

"I'm only 17, and I am always constipated. I've tried Fiber One bars, Miralax, and 4 water bottles a day (not all at once), but after not having a bowel movement for one week, I decided to try Milk of Magnesia. My great grandma swore by it, and my mom picked it up and told me to give it a shot. I took 1 tbsp at about 11 pm and went to bed. Woke up and didn't feel the urge. Took 1 tbsp at about 9 am and had a satisfactory BM in 30 minutes. This stuff is great."

"I've tried everything, and I mean, EVERYTHING. I have severe OIC and have discovered that I need 'hydrating' laxatives. This is the best one I've tried that is reliable and predictable. I take it with lots of water. That's really important, otherwise, I will cramp and get nauseous. I also take it at night, and in the morning, after I'm up and moving around for about an hour, I will 'go'. Sometimes, in a severe bout of OIC, I may need the larger dose of 4 TBL. Just remember... lots of water with this. Good luck!"

"I'm 8 weeks pregnant and have been having trouble with constipation. I also have problems with nausea and vomiting, so I know my intake of food and water hasn't been the best. Today I felt the urge to have a bowel movement and was really excited to do so, as that hasn't been happening for a couple of weeks and I had to take an enema about 3 days ago. I tried to make a BM, and nothing but a pellet came out, and I was left with stool in my rectum, which caused a good deal of pain and discomfort. I literally could not sit down. I managed to make it down the street to CVS for MoM (CVS brand). I took about 45 ml + water at first, and then about 20 minutes later, I took the additional 15 ml + water. 6.5 very painful hours later, baseballs came out. Relief!"

"I read comments here about MOM taking it too far in the reverse. The directions and some patience are very important factors. My mother is 101, so we are very careful. After many years of chronic constipation and emergency room visits where even the ER couldn't easily help, we learned MOM, taken correctly, gives gentle relief over the course of a day or so. Our doctor explained MOM pulls moisture into the bowel to give relief, so it makes sense people are giving themselves the reverse problem by being too much in a hurry. Can't say enough about this rediscovered old friend. It is the most natural choice."

"I have had severe constipation, and I was barely using the bathroom. Within 8 months, I would say I was using the bathroom about once or twice a week. Just last night, I tried Milk of Magnesia, and it was a lifesaver! Barely using the bathroom within 8 months is very dangerous, so I was so scared! But this helped, and I'm so happy! I feel a lot better!"

"I had never been constipated before and was getting really fed up. I was going to try MOM, but my pharmacist recommended Senokot along with lactulose. I tried these for a couple of days, but neither was working. By day 6, I resorted to MOM knowing I had the following day off. I took 5 tbsp at 12:00 am, and by 3:00 am, I had a normal, gentle BM, with no cramping or side effects. Highly recommended!"

"I never get constipated. I usually poop at least twice per day, so when I woke up yesterday and felt like I had to poop, but could not get it out, no matter how hard I pushed, I soon enough found myself in an immense amount of pain and discomfort. I ate oatmeal, a whole bag of frozen spinach doused in butter, and drank herbal tea, to no avail. After finding the helpful reviews on this board, I asked my fiancée to pick up some MoM for me, on his way home today. I took 4 tbsp at about 8:00 pm and at around 10:30 pm, I was finally able to poop! I've had a few explosive diarrhea since, but at this point, I do NOT care, it just felt so good to go! MoM tastes pretty vile, but it works!"

"This stuff definitely works. I'm 27 weeks pregnant and have been backed up for the better part of the last two weeks. I'm scared to take anything as far as medications because this is my first, and I don't want to chance anything. Like someone else said, take as recommended and drink water! Don't overdo it, it may take as long as 6 hours. And do not take if you have somewhere to be. I would describe this as cramp-free for sure, but I would say you may be confused if you're peeing or not. You're probably not peeing, and it's definitely working. Will definitely be replacing my regular laxative! Oh, and it's a little chalky, but not terrible if you shoot it."

"I’ve never been constipated my whole life until just recently (46). Finally decided to take MOM this morning. I took 45 ml because I’m a pretty big guy. After 2 hours, nothing had happened, so I took 15 ml more, thinking maybe 45 wasn’t quite enough. This time I drank 8 ounces of water as well. About 15 minutes later, it was on! My advice, no matter what size you are, start with the lowest recommended dose and drink 8-12 ounces of water with it. And give it time to work."

"I experienced stomach flu with not being able to stop using the commode and took an anti-diarrhea medicine. Then the opposite happened, I became unable to go even after 2 days of eating solid foods. I used 2 tablespoons of Concentrated Fresh Strawberry Flavored Milk of Mag and in exactly 6.5 hrs, it worked in the middle of the night. I could not sleep, so I massaged my stomach and within 15 min., the formula worked, and it was very gentle. I have also used this after surgery, given to me by the nurse, and it works and relieves the problem."

"I had constipation for like 3 days, and it was getting super uncomfortable. So I bought some MoM (Milk of Magnesia), and it worked like a charm. You gotta be a little careful with the dosage so that you don't end up on the toilet for hours. I took the minimum 15 mL, and it did wonders. I'm a tiny person, so it's safe to say weight makes a very big difference."

"I've never had problems with my bowel movements. However, I just had to have surgery and was taking a narcotic - mostly to sleep at night. I had a small bowel movement the third night home, but then felt horribly constipated. It was almost worse than the operation. It was painful, uncomfortable in my belly, and bloating. I took olive oil, ate fruit, did all the things to get my body moving. I walked around for hours. Still, nothing. Finally, my mother came over with the Phillips Milk of Magnesia, and I took the largest amount. Nothing right away. I became frustrated and took another two teaspoons about three hours into waiting. Exactly six hours after I took the first dose, my system finally kicked in - BIG TIME. It was really painful, but relief."

"This product really works. I suffer from frequent constipation, but this product is the first to give easy, gentle relief. Now don’t get your hopes high on it working in 6 hours if you're really backed up. It took 10 hours to work for me, but definitely worth the wait. I will definitely use this product again."

"I suffered from diverticulitis 15 years ago. Had to have part of my sigmoid colon removed after it perforated, almost died from the infection. Things went well for 7 years, until I had to have surgery again because of blockage due to stomach adhesions, which they say is typical after that kind of surgery. In each of these incidents, I was unable to poop, and my stomach grew to the size of 2 watermelons! It was so painful. Well, it happened again! I couldn't pass anything but a few hard marbles for 2 weeks! The pain and gas were horrible! I tried everything, Senokot, prunes, etc. I was getting really scared that what was left of my colon would explode and I would die! I took a dose of MOM, and voila, it worked! Be near a toilet for several hours, though!"

"Oh my word! This stuff saved my life. It took the maximum 6 hr time to work. And it only softened half the load, the other half was a runny nightmare. I compared my constipation pain level to having a child. I was in the bathroom 20 times thinking... This is it!! This is it!!!! Just to be let down and hurting with more cramping. But when it finally softened it up just enough to get that biggie out, the rest came tumbling right after. Got to love methadone. I haven't been taking in as much water as I should and have been eating way too much ice cream. (Hint: dairy makes matters worse). What a horrible night. Give it time. It'll work one way or another, lol."
