For Birth Control "I am 3 months postpartum, I have 2 children. My doctor recommended I get Mirena. I did not want it, but she kept insisting that it was the best option and very safe. The day I was getting it, when she placed the Mirena inside my uterus, my whole abdomen felt a HORRIBLE cramp, which lasted a few seconds, then it was over. I went home with only mild cramps. The next morning I woke up, I was in severe pain, I couldn’t walk or sit. My whole abdomen was swollen and hurt if I barely touched it. My entire body felt sore, I was freezing cold and shaking, I went to the ER. They took my blood and checked my vitals, I had a fever and an infection. They took X-rays and an ultrasound, the Mirena was out of place and one of the T’s was poking into my abdomen. I was getting bags of antibiotics and morphine for pain, which didn’t help my pain at all. The pain only went away after it was removed 2 days later. Now, 4 days after removal, I am still cramping, in pain, bleeding, and very nauseous."

For Birth Control "So I’m 26, and I’ve had this IUD for about 9 months now, and it’s been horrible! I’ve been bleeding old blood for months now, and it smells so bad. I literally have to wear tampons every day. I constantly have to take showers, and I’m sick of it. At this point, I’m ready to just get it removed because I can’t even have an active sex life with old, smelly blood coming out of my vagina every day."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I had the Mirena inserted 3 weeks ago to treat horrible periods, which caused anemia. Insertion was no big deal (I've had 5 c-sections). I spotted a few days after insertion, then pretty heavy bleeding for about a week. I've had zero bleeding now for about 5 days and had the best orgasm of my life yesterday. Oh, and I am 52 and still able to get pregnant (no menopause yet). So glad I didn't let the scary stories stop me from getting it. I feel like I got my life back. I hope it stays like this."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I had a Mirena put in when I had my laparoscopy for endometriosis about five months ago. I had a month of heavy bleeding at first, now it's just a few days a month of light bleeding. The rest of the time, there is a light discharge, whatever that is. It is annoying as I have to always wear a pantyliner. Good thing the Mirena has gotten rid of the heavy, painful bleeding I had and my menstrual migraines (which used to last for 7-10 days every month). Yay! The only thing that really upsets me is the acne on my chin, though it's more like rash-type spots than full-on acne. It looks dreadful as my face has red splotches on it, and it's embarrassing. Still, I would prefer to have that than the horrible pains and migraines that I used to."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I’m so annoyed. It seems like most people have a wonderful experience with getting the IUD. I had a feeling my experience wouldn’t be great, but I tried to give it a chance. March will be a year that I’ve had it, and I still get my period every 2 weeks, and it lasts 2 weeks. I’m over it. My Gyno wants me to give it a year because I’m at the point now where I’m just ready for a hysterectomy because I’m sick of not getting a break from bleeding. It’s unfortunate because I have only so many options since I have to do progesterone-only birth control because I had P.E. in the lungs. I originally got on birth control because of a horrible period, which is why I said at the onset I almost figured this wouldn’t work, but I had to give it a try. It does, however, at least seem like my cramps and flow definitely aren’t as bad and heavy. I just cannot handle bleeding this long and for so many days out of the month, whether it’s minimal bleeding or not."

For Birth Control "Went on Mirena as it was one of my only options for birth control due to hormone issues and aura migraines. It hurt pretty bad having it put in. I suggest 800 mg of ibuprofen a half an hour to an hour before insertion. I have never had a child. Right after insertion, I felt great, no pain for a few hours, then the cramps began. Nonstop terrible cramps with a little bleeding for 3 full days. I finally called the Dr., and she wrote me a script for Vicodin, so I could go to work. No sleep for those 3 days due to terrible pain. The cramps finally subsided, but then the stabbing pain started. Terrible stabbing pain in my abdomen. I think my body was rejecting it. I had it removed. Feel much better."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I had the Mirena put in 6 weeks ago to help control heavy periods. The actual procedure was uncomfortable, but not 'painful,' although I did take paracetamol and ibuprofen beforehand (as recommended). Week 1, I had no symptoms at all. Then, week 2, I started to bleed. Now at week 6, and I haven't stopped bleeding since week 2. When my 'period' was due, I had double the duration of my normal cycle (where a tampon was required), but the other weeks have been pad only. I haven't had any mood swings or cramping that are any different from before Mirena, so I'm going to bear with it and hope I come out the other end with the intended result... lighter periods. Watch this space!!!"

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I am 51 years old and am in the middle of the menopause transition. My doctor recommended placing a Mirena IUD to control post-menopausal bleeding. He implanted the IUD earlier this week. The doctor assured me that placement would not be very painful and that it was a quick and easy procedure. Well, that was nuts! The placement took at least 20 minutes, and it was pure nightmare material. My cervix apparently bled during the procedure, so the doctor cauterized it with silver nitrate, which, of course, stung. After placement, I was in constant pain. I could not sleep that night due to the severe pain and called the next day to have it removed. Upon removal, the pain went away almost instantly. Now, however, two days later, I am bleeding rather profusely. This is a nightmare. I would highly discourage any perimenopausal or menopausal woman from considering this therapy. Not only did it not decrease the bleeding, but the placement was excruciatingly painful, and now I am bleeding more than ever."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I have been on the Mirena IUD since the beginning of May. Two weeks later, I got my period, and it never left. I’ve been bleeding for over 60 days, wore a pad every single day. It’s ruining my life. I’m so unhappy, and my husband is too."

For Birth Control "I am 20 years old and never had a child or been pregnant, and I decided to go with Mirena after much thought. I was pretty nervous going into it, and I'm not going to lie, insertion was pretty painful. I would recommend taking that day off for anyone, but by the next day, I felt better, and by the second day, I was back to the gym. The first month was pretty much continuous bleeding, but I have now had Mirena for 4 months, and I must say the pain of insertion and bleeding was worth it! I would definitely recommend sticking it out, considering that you can keep it for 5 years!"

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I'm 49 and have had heavy bleeding, big clots, terrible cramping all my life. With the heavy blood loss, I had very low hemoglobin and anemia. Twice I had to have a course of iron injections in my butt, leaving stains for years. Had Mirena put in by my gynecologist when I was 45. She said to give it at least a year to settle and it will be worth it. She was right. The first 10 months, my periods were all over the place compared to before, a regular 28-day cycle all my life, but the flow got less and less. Cramping reduced a couple of months after the insertion of Mirena. Definitely, by 1 year, my periods had stopped."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I’ve had the Mirena coil for 15 months now, and in my experience, it’s been awful: tender breasts all the time, period pains pretty much all the time. The heavy bleeding did settle after 6 months of it being inserted, however, I never know when the bleeding might start again, as sometimes it’s every 2 weeks. The last period I had was so bad it scared me as I was losing big clots and soaked an extra super absorbent tampon within 5 minutes. I’ve since been to my GP, who has confirmed the strings are in the right place. Swabs came back fine. Now got to go for a scan before I can have it removed to make sure I haven’t got a fibroid. I did persevere with it for this long in the hope it would settle and make each month better. Unfortunately, it’s just made me more miserable and can’t wait to have it removed. I’m going on holiday tomorrow, and I’ve been awake since 3 am with excruciating cramps."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I am 28 years old and have no children. I got the Mirena inserted 2 months ago (very painful) and have been bleeding non-stop since. Some days are fairly light while others are heavier. I have yet to go a day without wearing a liner or tampon. It is extremely frustrating and has disrupted my sex life. Luckily, I am in a committed relationship of just over 2 years with an understanding man. However, I am seriously considering getting Mirena removed. My most recent vacation to Hawaii was pretty uncomfortable, and I have another vacation in another tropical area coming up next month. Having to constantly worry about this is stressful."

For Birth Control "I just had the Mirena inserted yesterday. I'm 22 years old with no kids. The procedure was very painful. I felt nauseous afterwards and felt like I was gonna pass out during it. I had major cramping and bleeding for the rest of the day. Today, I only have mild cramping and some spotting. So it seems to be getting better."

For Birth Control "I've had Mirena for a little over a year and absolutely love it. I'm in my early 20s and was hesitant to start other forms of birth control because it is hard for me to remember to take pills, and I was worried about the weight gain. I've had no weight gain on Mirena and no extremely noticeable side effects. It was slightly painful to get inserted, and I bled lightly for a few months afterward, but once that stopped, it's been great. I tend to have spotting or a light period for one or two days every couple of months, but that's it. It's great and so convenient."

For Birth Control "Well, I've had the Mirena for about 2 months. I'm 22, no kids. I have tried different pills, but I was horrible about remembering. The insertion of the Mirena was really painful. I have had kidney stones, and insertion wasn't quite as bad as that. After 2 days of horrible cramping, it went away. After 3 weeks of spotting/bleeding, I stopped and have not had any period since. I do have cramps sometimes. I have not gained or lost any weight. No hair loss. No changes in acne. The only thing I've noticed is that I now have lots of little fine hairs all over my chin and the side of my face. Way more than before. Not a huge deal, but annoying. My boyfriend cannot feel it at all, and my sex drive is the same. So far, I love it."

For Birth Control "Please don't be afraid to try this! I'm 36 with no children, had to come off the pill for health reasons. Dr. said it was great for women my age. I was scared to death from all these reviews. But I gave it a try. Yes, insertion was terribly painful (and I'm a tough cookie). After a few hours of cramping, my ibuprofen did the job and I felt better. Had a sore back the next day and that's been it. No bleeding (insertion during my cycle) since. I've been working out and actually have started to lose weight. No acne or moodiness, although it's only been a week. Please give it a try and enjoy your built-in birth control."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I have had it since September 2014. I am 40 and have had problems with heavy bleeding, frequent periods, painful cramps, and depression during PMS since age 35. This has been great for relief of all my symptoms. Until my doctor mentioned this, I was looking at having a D & C done. I have had no weight gain, I actually lost 5 pounds. Some spotting in the beginning, but very light periods now. No more depression the week before my period. It was a very positive experience for me."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I am 45 and never pregnant (my husband of 17 years has a vasectomy, so pregnancy is not the issue). Got my Mirena on Nov 6, 2015, to control heavy (gushing) bleeding every time I get my period (which was quite regular and predictable). I have bled pretty much continuously since Nov - have had maybe 10 days total where I didn't bleed or have brown discharge. Cramps hit randomly and are severe. It's seriously starting to affect my marriage too - mood swings, constant bleeding = no sex, arguments because of no sex, etc. Called my GYN office today and told them I want this OUT - waiting to hear back from their nurse. I'd rather bleed heavy for 2 days and know it's coming than to maybe bleed or spot or cramp at any given time. NEVER AGAIN!"

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I had my Mirena inserted in 2009, and I have yet to experience any major issues. Yes, in the beginning, I bled for 3 months with a day or two in between with no bleeding at all, and I had thoughts of getting it removed but never did. It has been very effective, and I am glad I kept it in. I have very light cycles now, where I might spot for about 3 or 4 days, and that's it. I'm relieved that I don't have to worry about unplanned pregnancies, and I do plan to get the new one installed next year prior to my current one expiring."

For Birth Control "I was unable to take oral birth control because I would never stop bleeding on the pill. I had a child and had the Mirena placed shortly after his birth. There was no pain at all. I did bleed continuously for 6 months, which I had expected due to my previous birth control experiences. I've had the Mirena for 3 years and haven't had a period since the first 6 months! I've had an overall excellent experience with Mirena."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I had Mirena placed after fibroid removal. My doctor claimed that this was going to be super helpful, but it ended up being a nightmare. Not to mention it was super painful and $1500 to get inserted, I bled and cramped every single day after the insertion. After four months, I had it removed as I slowly developed anxiety, fogginess, and migraines along with the cramping and bleeding. The day after I got it removed, I ended up in the ER due to uncontrollable bleeding. While there, I found out that I was now anemic because of the constant bleeding. After a few weeks, I started to go back to my normal. The cramps did stop as soon as the device was removed. I began sharing my story with friends, and every one of them who had a Mirena eventually had it removed due to some type of adverse reaction. I suggest that anyone thinking about getting this should really study user reviews and talk to friends before listening to a drug company or doctors pushing the device."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "Had Mirena inserted July 2016, have been spotting and bleeding ever since (Nov 2016). Back pain, nausea, cramps, clots, headaches, low moods. Went to doctors who told me to persevere for 6 months and see how it goes, as they cost a lot of money and I can't just have them in and out. Came out feeling more confused, as I don't want the symptoms, and has put a complete stop to my sex life. Was meant to help with heavy periods, not take my life away."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I am 40. I had to change my birth control pills when I got 40. They weren't strong enough for me because I bled really heavy and for 7 days and every other week. So I decided to let my OB/GYN insert the Mirena, which she had tried to get me to get before trying those lighter birth control pills. It's only been a week, but I love not having to think about taking the pill. Also, I was on my period when it was inserted, my period became light the same day and was for three days. For me, the placement was a 3 on a scale of 1-10 with pain. But my cervix is pushed far back and to the side, and they had to pull it towards them to place it, and that pain was a 7. So far, no regrets, only wish I had done it sooner."
