For Birth Control "The insertion of Kyleena was the most painful experience of my life. I felt like someone was sawing my body in half, the pain was so horrible that I passed out. After insertion, I had some mild cramping but nothing major. In about 4 months I had gained 25 pounds while eating 1600 calories a day and working out 6 times a week. The side effects (cramps, nausea, dizziness, headaches) when I got my period were also amplified so I wouldn't recommend it if you typically have bad period side effects. I did have a regular period though. It was nice to not have to worry about taking a pill or anything but overall not worth it."

For Birth Control "Don’t get the kyleena, I had it in February 2019 and found out I had an ectopic pregnancy today, November 2019. I had to have surgery and remove a part of my Fallopian tube. I was promised it was 99% effective but it doesn’t seem so. My boyfriend and I are going to use spermicide condoms in addition to the kyleena since they did not take it out with surgery. Hope this information helps."

For Birth Control "Although the insertion process was extremely painful, I am loving my Kyleena so far! Mild cramping for the first week and no spotting! My breast tenderness from being on the pill for so long finally went away and I like knowing I have the most effective birth control device ready to go at all times! So far no side effects other than just mild cramping! I highly recommend!"

For Birth Control "I had the kyleena for 3 months. Insertion was not bad at all and just felt like a really bad cramp. I took some ibuprofen beforehand along with a med to dilate my cervix per my doctors recommendation. I bled for a month after insertion and became severely depressed, anxious, and lethargic. I have a history of being depressed but this was on another level. Once I stopped bleeding the depression eased up a little bit and I have been mildly depressed since. Other side effects I have dealt with are increased acne and weight gain (about 10 pounds). Due to these negative side effects, I decided to have it removed today. The process was painless and only took a few minutes. If you don't have mental health issues you will probably be fine, but if you do I would be hesitant about this IUD. Also, some of my side effects could have been worsened by quarantine/coronavirus. What I liked most about the Kyleena was its low maintenance and lighter periods."

For Birth Control "I’ve been on this for almost a year to give it a fair chance (that’s what my gyno advised after mentioning my symptoms). The insertion was not really anything serious. I didn’t take the painkillers before or after and I’ve never had a kid. Stings a bit like a strong cramp but aside from that it’s a nonissue. After insertion, I bled nonstop for 3 months. It also made my cramps way worse than they ever were before I got this thing inserted. Eventually the nonstop bleeding stopped but I still get random cramps even when I’m not on my period. This thing has completely got rid my sex drive- so much that I don’t even want kisses from my bf and haven’t since about a month into having this thing put in. It’s nice to not have to take a pill every day but isn’t really worth it to me. I’m personally getting mine removed after the semester ends."

For Birth Control "*Easy insertion d/t natural ovulation, cervix softener, Valium, & Ibu. *Bleeding for 4 mo almost nonstop. 95% spotting. Daily. Increased after any sexual activity. *Experienced a decidual cast in 3rd week. *Breast tenderness, swelling, PAIN when leaning into something or doing self exam. All the time. *At least 2 "periods" a month (just darker/heavier, but short). *Cramps - random *Mood- Depression ok, anxiety up. Feel spacey a lot. Feel ADHD meds don't quite do their job anymore. *Weight - retain fluid, have to take a fluid pill around "period" days & randomly. Always hungry, even on stimulant. Have begun gaining in month 4. *Acne - prone to hormonal, but NONE. *Genital - Labial cysts are frequent, maybe due to pads constantly used Always itchy because my skin hates pads, but can't use anything else for various reasons. Currently a yeast infection. *Emotions - cry randomly & once a month sob at the most ridiculous things. Not a crier. Not quite a fan."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena for a year and a half. Getting it put in was easy and painless, but it made me feel dizzy for a few seconds. Had some cramping, but nothing worse than normal period cramping. That eventually went away and my periods slowly got shorter and lighter and were eventually almost completely gone. Then I found out I was pregnant! I got an ultrasound and she said the Kyleena was still in the correct spot and it should have been working for another 3.5 years. My doctor told me that she doesn’t recommend the Kyleena anymore because she has seen so many pregnancies with it. I’m now 19 weeks pregnant with a sweet baby girl and I’m thankful for that, but if you plan to get birth control to prevent pregnancy, I would suggest taking a different route. I still gave it a halfway decent rating because for the time I had it my periods were shorter, lighter and less painful."

For Birth Control "here to share my story as a positive lil piece of re-assurance for those looking for it after scrolling through endless horror stories - I’m in my second month with kyleena and things are now starting to settle. Don’t get me wrong, the first period was not a fun one, the cramps were horrendous and it lasted for just over 10 days. But it’s like they say - the 3 months adjusting period will always be rocky. Period round two is so far a lot lighter - and cramps are less frequent/become gradually less intense. I got kyleena to help with a health condition as well as birth control) and my periods are normally very heavy and painful - and even the period I got at first had me curled up for a week. But they’re slowly becoming lighter! I know everyone’s experience is different but chances are things will improve. At the start may be rough at points but in the long run it’s most definitely worth it."

For Birth Control "Been on the Kyleena for 1.5 years now and I absolutely son't want to have it anymore. Insertion was okay, it hurt bad for about a week or so but was happy I as it is low maintenance. Although, it caused so many mood swings that were unbearable. Still have my period, and they are irregular. Occasional acne will appear as usual before my period. The thing I can’t deal with the most is the mood change though. If you have a history of depression or anything mood altering then don’t try this unless you are prepared to feel depressed for the duration of it."

For Birth Control "The Kyleena IUD is probably one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. I am 22, never been pregnant and I had it inserted at Planned Parenthood just over a year now. The insertion was completely painless for me. If anything it was just uncomfortable. I wasn't even on my period and didn't take any painkillers at the time of insertions. I only had cramps and spotting the same day after insertion and got my period on time a couple of weeks later. I still get my periods like normal, but they are much lighter than they were before Kyleena, which I am not complaining about. My boobs have also gone from a C cup to DD ever since I got the IUD (also not complaining but completely unexpected). I've been having unprotected sex since getting it and all I can say is that it's doing it's job. I cannot recommend this IUD enough."

For Birth Control "The only good thing about Kyleena is that it prevents pregnancy. The insertion is bad, but that was to be expected. A week or two into having the IUD I did not notice any side effects, but after about a month I started to have very noticeable side effects. I had the worst cramps of my life (literally to the point where I thought I might have to go to the ER) and also horrible reoccurring back pains. I told my nurse on call at my gyno about my symptoms and she claimed it was normal to experience this following the insertion so I just stuck it out. Not only did the horrible cramps and back pain never subside, but I also ended up getting the worst acne of my life. Additionally, I think Kyleena has affected my mood: I have many more mood swings and am a lot more depressed. Some of my friends also have Kyleena but have never experienced this so I guess everyone is different; I just wanted to share the side effects I experienced. I am getting it removed tomorrow... thank god :))"

For Birth Control "This is my two month review. I have searched options to reduce my heavy cycle, had issues with pills and never had an IUD. I agreed to Kyleena because my doctor said it had much less hormones than other IUDs plus no estrogen. I asked two questions: will it make me gain weight (affecting appetite) and will I grow or lose hair. The insertion was very painful, cramping on and off for days. Spotting has not stopped. I have had two periods since and they have been super light. I have lost a lot of weight; definitely not desired as I was already 110 lbs and I am only 5'3. All this and I had no issue as I can eat as much as I want. My BIGGEST issue is my hair. I had very thick long hair and now I can see through to my scalp. I went back to my doctor, but she said that it is irrelevant as the hormones are not reaching my bloodstream!! I would appreciate any comments or insight regarding this. It is my first IUD and I am staring to get very anxious and stressed out..."

For Birth Control "The initial insertion was ok, and then I had a kind of brown sludge discharge that lasted for 4 months. It finally stopped, and the good news was my period had stopped along with it. I didn't notice many adverse effect until the 2.5 - 3 year mark. After having this in long term, my hormones went crazy. I developed panic attacks, anxiety, brain fog, insomnia, and have never had any of these things in my life. I spoke with many psychologists and finally upon advice from my therapist, I took the Kyleena out and had my hormones tested. My progesterone (calming hormone Kyleena releases) was almost 0. Your body becomes dependant on the birth control. If I had knows the havoc this would cause, I would have never gotten the IUD. Hormonal birth control can cause SO many long term problems doctors don't warm you about, and many of my friends had the same crash. If you do choose to get this IUD please please closely observe how it impacts your body. IMO NOT worth it at all."

For Birth Control "The only thing I like about Kyleena is how low maintenance it is. My insertion went about as smooth as possible, with no cramping afterwards at all! With that being said, the part of the insertion where it is pushed up through your cervix was the most intense pain I've ever felt, even though it lasted 1/5th of a second. Unfortunately, for me it wasn't worth it. I have had the IUD in for almost two years because I wanted to give it a good shot and really let my body get used to it before swearing it off, but the side effects are unbearable for me. Within a month of IUD insertion I started getting horrible migraines, really painful ovulation, bleeding during ovulation, severe PMS, severe cramps during period, acne, weight gain. I had a blood test to rule out any other causes, it seems the IUD just didn't react well with me. I will say though that it made my periods a lot lighter, or not less painful."

For Birth Control "My only regret with the Kyleena is that I didn't get one sooner! I've had mine for 2 and a half years now, and recommend it to all of my girlfriends. Insertion wasn't terrible and is SO worth it. The day of, it felt kind of like a quick sudden need to poo as it was being inserted, but only lasted about 5-10 seconds. Afterwards it's just the usual period-style cramps. And then long-term, I really haven't had any side effects! Some spotting here and there, but my periods are extremely light, have never had any pregnancy scares at all, no cramping, nothing. All good, and so much better than having to remember to take a pill every day. If you're on the fence, do it!"

For Birth Control "Having my IUD inserted was the most painful experiences of my life. The cramps the first 3 weeks after having it put in felt like I was having birth contractions. Like on the floor sobbing. However, once the cramping went away, about 6 weeks after having it put it, it has been fantastic. I haven’t had a period in over a year, I rarely think about it all. I used to have a lot of anxiety over other forms of BC. Wondering how effective they are, etc. But I never worry now. I am really anxious about getting it replaced in a few years but overall it’s been a fantastic experience."

For Birth Control "Kyleena is the second IUD I have tried. I first tried Mirena around 17 which made my period longer by 1 day so I removed it. Fast forward 3 years, I had a pregnancy scare and decided to try Kyleena. I’ve had it almost 2 years and my period is now 10 days long every month. My mom recommended IUDs to me because it made her period disappear but I guess I’m unlucky. A doctor actually told me she doesn’t believe my period has become longer because of the IUD that it was going to happen anyway...guess I’ll never know. I also get pretty bad cramps the day before my period comes & the first 2 days of my period which didn’t happen before & I’ve noticed my acne has gotten a lot worse."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena IUD inserted about 4 months ago. I heard very mixed experiences on whether or not insertion hurt - and for me it was extremely painful. I had pretty bad cramping and had to avoid exercise for about 3-4 days after insertion, which wasn't too bad. For the past 2 months I have been experiencing the worst cramps EVER that come at very random times. I have never given birth before, but I often think that these cramps must be what contractions feel like. I've had ultrasounds and I have been told that the IUD has not shifted or anything, so the cause of the cramps is unknown. I'm hoping they go away because I don't know how long I can take it!!"

For Birth Control "Placed in 2017 and removed in 2021. If you have a small frame, are sensitive, or prone to depression Kyleena isn't for you. I felt my IUD in my body for the duration of having it. I didn't realize how much daily pain I had due to it. Removal was a HUGE relief. Placement pain varies; best comparison is to think of your cramps- if you generally suffer from chronic pain then insertion could hurt more. It feels like 2 quick hot pinchs in the cervix. Then there was pain after like severe period cramps, only lasted about 12 hrs. After placement I had random sharp pain in my uterus with movement, like jabs from a piece of sharp plastic. Intercourse was only affected in this respect; fear of pain from IUD. My libido/ lubrication weren't affected. Severe depression due to Kyleena. Within weeks of placement symptoms were apparent. (I speak about depression because since removal most symptoms have fallen off). My digestive system and bowels were affected. This ceased with removal too."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted in July 2019. It was painful. I felt cramps and dizzy after procedure. I had heavy cramps the first week. And then, I had period every other week and spotting in between. Bleeding just doesn't go away. It has been 10 weeks. I still have cramps, knee soreness and lower energy. I have to take iron supplement every day. I don’t have acne. I do experience gain weight, bloating, hair loss and mood swings. Can I handle one more month? NO. Now I am worried about what may happen when it is removed. Will bleeding stop? Do I go back to normal?"

For Birth Control "I just got my IUD so I can’t speak on long term but I would like to speak on the procedure itself. These reviews scared me to the point where I was about to chicken out! I have had about 10 friends give me 10 different experiences but this was mine: super quick with a small amount of discomfort. It was two hard cramps and then it was done. Less than 15 seconds and it was over. I would say I have an average pain tolerance so take that how you will. It’s been about 2 hours since and I am experiencing very normal period cramps but nothing out of this world. I would NOT consider this “worst pain of my life, excruciating pain”. It could have been my doctor really knew what she was doing and her tenure made the procedure more pleasant than others. I wanted to write this as hopefully this gives someone encouragement in going through with it if they are hesitating!"

For Birth Control "I've had the Kyleena now for over a year. The insertion wasn't very painful but the days/weeks afterwards was awful. I would cramp so bad that the cramps would stop me in my tracks. My periods went from normal flow to extremely light/spotting. I completely lost all my libido, and I became very dry. I became severely depressed. My headaches/migraines increased substantially. I know that this BC is to blame for my diminished libido and dry vag, but I don't know if it has anything to do with my migraines and depression. When I spoke to my OB about it she said that I shouldn't be experiencing that because the IUD keeps the hormones localized in the uterus instead of it spreading throughout my body. So I continued with the IUD. After 8-9 months my periods stopped completely. I have no desire for sex whatsoever. I am constantly dry down there and it is very uncomfortable to be this dry when I am still in my mid 20s. I do still have this IUD to this day."

For Birth Control "I hated this. The whole experience was a nightmare. The insertion was fine for me. The night and day after was horrific. I had to take a prescription pain killer and sleep to even get through the pain- worst bleeding and cramping I’ve ever dealt with. My periods were all over the place the entire year I had the IUD. They would come without warning and with out a consistent cycle. I developed several cyst and was told this is just what happened with the IUD. My doctor told me to make it to 6 months. So I did. At 6 months I was fed up thought it was dislodged because of a sharp pain I was feeling in my abdomen. Nope, just cramping with the IUD. My doctor told me to wait it out another 6 months so I did. And it just got worse. The cramps were horrific, and I got on this to help regulate and help with my periods. After a year, I had enough and got it removed. I gained 25 pounds, my mood swings were out of control, and the pain was horrific."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena inserted two weeks ago. The insertion was like a quick painful pinch. Then it was done. I was surprised how quick. Ever since that day my stomach looks and feels pregnant though:( I've gained 10 lbs and feel horribly bloated. My abdomen and lower back ache constantly and sometimes the achy sensations wake me up at night. I'm experiencing significant fatigue which goes beyond just a little disrupted sleep. It has become hard to function or even care to function. I am experiencing a significant change in moods. I either feel apathy or anger, most of the time, which is totally out of character. I have lost interest in sex (maybe just because I feel so horrible) but two weeks ago I had an amazing sex drive. I am experiencing several other side effects (bleeding, breast tenderness, vaginal dryness). I went to the doctor last week with concerns and she was very dismissive. I have a follow-up appointment tomorrow and I will insist on removal."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted yesterday, and I have to say that I was pretty nervous after reading the reviews on here. But it is really not that bad. Just talk it all out with your doctor, and you will be just fine. My doctor prescribed me a cervix softener to take before insertion which I think helped quite a bit. It's not a pleasant experience, and it did hurt but not nearly as bad as I was anticipating. It was uncomfortable, but it only lasted for about 4 minutes! I had some pretty bad cramping for a few hours after, but taking Tylenol and using a heating pad worked wonders. Now it's the next day and I have no pain, just some really light spotting! Just trust your doctor ladies :)"
