For Birth Control "I had my IUD inserted in November 2017, and it was super painful for me (I was 23 w/ no children). I had terrible cramping for about 2 weeks afterwards, and my cervix continued to be sensitive for about 3 months after insertion, making me unable to have sex without severe discomfort. After this, I didn't have much issue for a few months and was happy with the IUD other than occasional cramping when I was supposed to have my usual period. I had minor spotting but never had an actual period after having my IUD inserted. About 4 months ago, I began having severe pain almost constantly on the left side of my body (lower back, pelvis, leg, ankle, etc.). When talking to my gyno about it, he sent me for internal and external ultrasounds, which came out normal. My doctor put me on antibiotics and two anti-inflammatory medications for 3 weeks and hoped it would clear up. After that round of meds, my pain wasn't as constant, and I was able to have sex with only minor discomfort. Now my chronic pain is back and in full force. Some days I can barely walk, and I am essentially living in anticipation of taking my next dose of pain relief because it barely works anymore. My gyno still doesn't have any idea what it could be, except for my IUD not reacting well with my body (which he claims he's never heard of), so he suggested I have it removed. After further research, it seems that younger women without children are prone to pains such as this, which had never been mentioned to me. My doctor continues to tell me that my pain and experience are very rare and that he isn't sure why it's happening, but with a little more research, I've heard about many people having an experience typical to this but being told it 'wasn't the IUD.' I'm hoping that once it's removed (my doctor has scheduled me to get it removed a month and a half from now, ugh), that this chronic pain will go away, and I will be able to function normally again. I'll update this when I do!"

For Birth Control "I’ve had the Kyleena for around a year and a half, and there are a few things you should know: 1) Insertion for me was NOT bad. It felt like a pinch-just be sure to take ibuprofen before your appointment (I took 4). NOTE: I am not a virgin. If you are, I can’t promise how you’ll react. It’s a little weird having someone be all up in your private area. So come mentally prepared! 2) If you are acne-prone, sadly your skin might get worse. I wish I could tell you that the Kyleena had no effect on my skin, but it did. Make sure to keep up a healthy diet, skincare routine, and exercise regime! This has helped me a lot. This side effect shouldn’t deter you! 3) Gaining weight? Nope! I lost 30 pounds during the time I've been on this form of BC. You can maintain/lose weight for sure. 4) Periods eventually became alarmingly light to the point I thought I was pregnant. However, it’s very good at preventing pregnancy-Kyleena has yet to fail me :)."

For Birth Control "I passed out when having it implanted, and it was all downhill from there. My anxiety has steadily been creeping up since having it placed. I'm at about a year now and am seriously considering having it removed, I'm getting to the point where I can go to the store without my heart rate skyrocketing and feeling like I'm going to pass out."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena placed in January. The insertion wasn't nearly as bad as I had expected, for me, it felt like a big menstrual cramp on each side while being placed. I did not bleed afterwards, and I could not tell anything was different. My periods have increasingly become lighter, and I never have any spotting in between periods. While I enjoy Kyleena because I have no physical symptoms, my emotions have been all over the place. I feel like I am moody much of the time, my anxiety is through the roof, and I have lost much of my motivation to be active. I've always been slightly anxious, but it has significantly escalated. I am currently trying to decide if I want to try a medication to ease my anxiety or if I should just get it removed."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena inserted in January of 2017. I was told to take 600 mg of ibuprofen before and wasn't asked to be on my period for insertion. The procedure was a piece of cake and took no more than 10 minutes. The pain was only slight cramping for a few seconds while inserting. The first few days I had cramps, which is typical, but they were bearable. I had light spotting for about a month after, which was annoying, but that has now stopped. So far, I've only had one period, and it was super light and lasted two days, which is not typical for me. I usually have a heavy period (super tampon) for a week. So far, I'm loving this basically nonexistent period, no acne, improved sex life, and overall I feel happier compared to the pill I was previously taking."

"Well, I'm the first one reviewing this... I got my Kyleena IUD placed on Dec. 2nd, 2016. It was painful, but no more so than other IUDs I've read about. The issues I'm having are constant spotting. I've been bleeding lightly (where I have to wear a light pad so I don't ruin my underwear every day) for two months now. The office told me about a month ago that my spotting is normal and most likely means once I stop spotting, I'll be done with my period for the five years Kyleena is good for. But I'm starting to get a bit worried... two months of bleeding seems excessive. Anyone else have experience with this?"

For Birth Control "I have had Kyleena for almost two years now. I keep telling myself my body just needs to adjust and that all the problems will go away, but after reading some of these reviews, I really should’ve listened to what my body has been telling me. Since I’ve had Kyleena, I’ve been constantly spotting. Like, allllllll the time. I get sharp pains in my sides and back, and it’s been going on for quite some time. I keep hoping that my body will adjust because Kyleena does do its job, but the acne, the spotting all day, and after sex, the pains? Definitely not worth it. I’ll be contacting my OB to have this removed ASAP. All this time I thought it was just me."

For Birth Control "I bled and cramped for a solid month. Then the headaches, acne, and breast tenderness started. I've gained 10 lbs in four months with this thing. The inches are all going to my waist. And now to add to the cramping, I have extreme bloating. It's so bad it distracts me from my job because it's painful to sit. I've not been on a hormonal birth control in five years, so there's no other explanation for these changes. I'm getting it removed."

For Birth Control "So to start the review off. I actually just had mine removed today after almost having it for one year. I have been on every birth control you can think of since I was 16: the pill, the patch, the ring, now this IUD. I will say the IUD did help give me shorter periods and not as painful ones, but the mental side effects were horrible. Made me antisocial, gave me low self-esteem, anxiety and rumination of thoughts, brain fog, my memory became worse and worse, lack of motivation. Ladies, listen to your body. If you notice that you’re having these emotions or thoughts, know that it’s more than likely your IUD and you’re not crazy. Everybody’s experience is different, but when they say it’s localized, it’s not, you will more than likely over time still have the depression and anxiety. I was even on an SSRI prior, and it still didn’t help. Weight gain is pretty common, which is what I got. The moment I removed my IUD, the head tension I had immediately alleviated."

For Birth Control "Insertion review: Easy and quick. The measuring of the uterus was the most painful. It was a very sharp, intense cramp that took my breath away. Then they inserted the Kyleena applicator, which didn’t hurt going in, but I did feel the IUD arms open. Didn’t have any severe cramping until I got home.... The cramps were pretty bad at first. Maybe for the first three hours. I just hung out on a sofa with a heating pad and took a Tramadol and acetaminophen that my doctor prescribed for me. I had it inserted during my cycle, which might be why my cramps were so painful. It’s now five days with the IUD, and I have only had minor back pain and cramping at night. My period seems to be lasting a bit longer than it would when I was on the patch, but it is too soon to see. A lot easier and less painful than I imagined!"

"I had Kyleena inserted in 2017, had it removed this year. Insertion was painful, but I knew it would be going in. First year was great. Painful cramps, but zero period. Did have acne flare-ups, which are unusual for me, but nothing crazy. Over the last 18 months, everything changed. Horrible, awful cramping, terrible bloating to the point where I literally was asked if I was pregnant - I am an extremely active person, currently training for a marathon, and even with training, running upwards of 20 miles a week, I was gaining weight. I developed mood swings - I am not a crier, but I could barely make it through a Hallmark commercial. And, oh god, libido was gone. Had it removed Monday, and already the bloating is completely gone, dropped 4 pounds, and my face is clear as can be. Was Kyleena effective? Yes. Was it convenient? Yes. But for me, not at all worth the plethora of symptoms I experienced. I've transitioned back onto the pill and am much happier for it."

For Birth Control "Overview: Got Kyleena in June of 2019. Kyleena insertion was horrendous. The 5 seconds that your OB is in your cervix, it's an utter nightmare. I fainted on the table and had to Uber home. Cramps for me lasted about 2-3 days after, and I didn't have any odd bleeding/spotting. PROS - light bleeding/spotting for period - low maintenance, never have to remember to take anything. CONS - lowered my libido IMMENSELY - intense cramps during periods - cramps/pain during sex if inserted deep enough - unbelievable depression, horrible - concentrated acne on my cheeks - 8-10 pounds of weight gain. After 1.5 years of giving the benefit of the doubt to this IUD... I'm getting it removed tomorrow. Everyone's bodies are different, but if you've ever had an inkling of acne or depression in your past, do not take this. Excited as anything to get this removed tomorrow."

For Birth Control "Kyleena insertion was extremely painful for me (I screamed and swore). This BC was convenient in theory, that is, until you get the unpleasant side effects: random panic attacks, anxiety about everything and nothing at the same time, lol. The anxiety became more frequent and intense over time. It also felt like a dark cloud was looming over me, I didn't feel like my happy self. I also had vivid and sometimes frightening dreams. This all greatly interfered with my daily functioning. I finally requested removal after only 2 months because I couldn't tolerate the experience. I was not willing to wait a few more months to see if I felt better-'IF' being the operative word here, lol. Removal was far less painful. I am now 2.5 weeks post-removal, and my anxiety has been dissipating, and I am slowly but surely starting to feel like myself again and at peace. I think the IUD is a convenient method of birth control if it works for you. It just did not work out for me, and I am okay with that."

For Birth Control "It has only been just under a month since I have had my IUD inserted, but I can say it is not as daunting as some of these reviews may make it out to be. To start off, I just want to say that everyone reacts differently to things, so this is just my personal review. Everyone I knew with an IUD told me that it was such an incredibly painful insertion, BUT I found it not to be. At most, it was slightly uncomfortable. For the rest of the month, I've had minimal to no cramping, slight acne, and my first menstruation since has been longer than normal, but other than that, no different at all. All the advice I could give someone reading these reviews is that you are never going to know how the process goes until you do it. Try it out and if it doesn't work for you, you can always get it taken out. Although, I would recommend doing your research with your doctors, though. I found my doctor to be extremely reassuring during the whole process and she included me in everything that she was doing."

For Birth Control "Been on the Kyleena for 1.5 years now, and I absolutely don't want to have it anymore. Insertion was okay, it hurt bad for about a week or so, but was happy I had it as it is low maintenance. Although it caused so many mood swings that were unbearable. Still have my period, and they are irregular. Occasional acne will appear as usual before my period. The thing I can’t deal with the most is the mood change though. If you have a history of depression or anything mood-altering, then don’t try this unless you are prepared to feel depressed for the duration of it."

For Birth Control "The insertion experience was painful, but nothing to be scared of. I have had the Kyleena IUD for 3 and a half years now. I have an appointment scheduled to have it removed. Once I hit the three-year mark is when I started to notice all of these side effects. I loved every minute of having this IUD until now. I have horrible mood swings, I feel so on edge with everything, I have never had anxiety until now, and it’s only getting worse, and also my sex drive is just gone. I feel awful for my boyfriend because I am so not myself."

For Birth Control "Insertion hurt so bad I screamed. A month later (horrible cramps almost daily), I woke up in the middle of the night shaking uncontrollably. I couldn’t stop, and I wanted to go to the ER. I was able to sleep through it, but when I woke up in the morning, my heart felt wrong. I felt every single heartbeat, and it felt like my heart was working too hard. Went to urgent care, and they did nothing. A few days later, I got dizzy and felt like I was going to faint, so I went to the ER. They told me nothing was wrong and sent me home. My gyn said that there was NO WAY the IUD was causing my heart palpitations, anxiety, dizziness, chest tightness, and panic attacks for 6 months. My symptoms got under control for 1.5 years, then came back. 3 years 9 months later, I can barely function some days without taking Xanax. Before the IUD, I had mild anxiety (under control), but now it's horrible, and I still get heart palpitations. I was FINE BEFORE GETTING KYLEENA. Removing in a few days. Pros: no period or pregnancy."

For Birth Control "I've had Kyleena for 1 year as of this month. The insertion for me was ridiculously painful. While I am very comforted by the fact that I am protected against pregnancy, I have spotty periods every month still and the worst cramps I have ever had. I have a decent pain tolerance, and I almost passed out in a DSW the week after insertion. Even one year out, my cramps are few and far between, but unbearable. Literally taking little breaths to get through it. Worth it? Maybe..."

For Birth Control "INSERTION REVIEW: I’ve had Kyleena for less than a week at this point. Pain due to insertion was pretty much nonexistent. I would say at the most intense a level 6 but very doable to sit through. I was easily able to get up from the table and get dressed and drive home. The hours after insertion, my period became very heavy (maybe I noticed it more because I was making a conscious effort to not wear a tampon when I usually always wear one while on my period). Still very little cramping. I went to dance practice 4 hours after the procedure, and I was fine. I really feel no symptoms from Kyleena at this point."

For Birth Control "I just wanted to share my experience with Kyleena. I had it placed around the last week of September, and I’ve scheduled an appointment to have it removed Monday 8/21. I wouldn’t say I’ve had this birth control long enough to see any positive results, and I hate to leave only negative, so I will say that placement was only slightly uncomfortable for me. Somehow, I got lucky and was on my period during placement. Now, I’ve developed awful acne and not simple acne. This is boils. All over my back, my neck, and some places on my face. I’ve never been one to have headaches, and now they’re daily. I also have developed dizziness and a “fog” brain. My breasts hurt on and off, my boyfriend said the string was sharp, so I checked myself, and yes! I’ve developed night sweats! And not to mention my anxiety, depression, and anger issues are out of this world. I snap so easily!! Thank goodness I’m having it removed in two days."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena for a year and a half. Getting it put in was easy and painless, but it made me feel dizzy for a few seconds. Had some cramping, but nothing worse than normal period cramping. That eventually went away and my periods slowly got shorter and lighter and were eventually almost completely gone. Then I found out I was pregnant! I got an ultrasound, and she said the Kyleena was still in the correct spot and it should have been working for another 3.5 years. My doctor told me that she doesn’t recommend the Kyleena anymore because she has seen so many pregnancies with it. I’m now 19 weeks pregnant with a sweet baby girl, and I’m thankful for that, but if you plan to get birth control to prevent pregnancy, I would suggest taking a different route. I still gave it a halfway decent rating because for the time I had it, my periods were shorter, lighter, and less painful."

For Birth Control "I got the Kyleena to help with my very irregular periods and to use it as birth control. I've only had it in for 5 months, and I'm 23 pounds heavier (even after restricting my calories to 1000 and only eating healthy organic). My left lower abdomen hurts a lot, it makes my left leg numb. I have not had my period in 4 months (after that month-long period I had when I first got it inserted), and I'm always cramping. I want to remove it, but with this whole coronavirus thing, I have to keep it in for maybe 2-3 more months."

For Birth Control "I was absolutely terrified to get Kyleena put in - I was having panic attacks and kept second guessing myself as to whether I should even get this. I knew this was my best option (I didn’t want anything to worsen my anxiety, and I didn’t want to gain weight). Anyway, I finally did it, and the insertion process of Kyleena was NOT BAD AT ALL!!!!! It literally felt like 2 period cramps and that was it. It took (and I kid you not) 2 minutes, and I was done. I’m so, so happy I did this, and I shouldn’t have been so scared to do it in the first place. IT’S REALLY NOT THAT BAD!!! Don’t listen to other people's horror stories!! All the good stories no one bothers to return here to write them, they are just off living their lives, not even thinking of their Kyleena."

For Birth Control "The only good thing about Kyleena is that it prevents pregnancy. The insertion is bad, but that was to be expected. A week or two into having the IUD, I did not notice any side effects, but after about a month, I started to have very noticeable side effects. I had the worst cramps of my life (literally to the point where I thought I might have to go to the ER) and also horrible recurring back pains. I told my nurse on-call at my gyno about my symptoms, and she claimed it was normal to experience this following the insertion, so I just stuck it out. Not only did the horrible cramps and back pain never subside, but I also ended up getting the worst acne of my life. Additionally, I think Kyleena has affected my mood: I have many more mood swings and am a lot more depressed. Some of my friends also have Kyleena but have never experienced this, so I guess everyone is different; I just wanted to share the side effects I experienced. I am getting it removed tomorrow... thank god :))"

For Birth Control "DO YOUR RESEARCH! I have had Kyleena for 2 years now, and I'm having it removed in a week. I should have known my acne would become worse since I already had troubles with hormonal acne before, and I'm super sensitive to hormones because I've been on the pill before and had to go off because of the weight gain, which then I shed the weight I gained in a month. So with the Kyleena, the weight gain has been worse, I gained 14 lbs since I've been on it, and it's been affecting my overall confidence. Also, I have zero motivation to have sex now, and my anxiety has gotten worse to the point I can't function normally some days. Please do your research before getting this put inside your body!"
