For Birth Control "I started the Kyleena IUD at age 18 after trying 2 different versions of the pill. I’m 22 now and had it removed about 5 months ago. Kyleena ruined my life. Painful insertion and spotting for a week. A few weeks later, I ended up in the hospital with ovarian cysts and a 103-degree fever. My periods soon became irregular, but I had constant pelvic pain and tender breasts. I gained quite a bit of weight and went up 2.5 cup sizes. The pain was so bad, my doctors were about to do a biopsy for endometriosis. Pain is gone now that the IUD is out, and periods are back to normal. Slowly losing the weight too. On the bright side, I didn’t get pregnant, and my hair got thicker."

For Birth Control "I switched from birth control pill to birth control pill, all of which I had adverse reactions to, such as mood swings, extremely low sex drive, weight gain, and painful sex. I finally decided to get an IUD and went with Kyleena. The insertion was very painful for me, and the most severe cramps occurred for the rest of the day. In the days that followed, the cramps subsided, and a month later I don’t even know it’s there! I have no mood swings, and my sex drive has finally returned so I can enjoy my sex life again. I had no spotting either. I recommend this to anyone who has any issues with the pill and other types of birth control."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted in May, and my periods have been getting better, lasting just 1 week every month. The only con there is to it is just getting it put in, you will cuss like a sailor because of the pain, but luckily it doesn't last more than a minute, and I never had a baby before. My partner doesn't feel it during sex. I had no mood changes, no acne, no weight gain, it's the best birth control ever! I will get it again in 5 years."

For Birth Control "I had such high hopes for Kyleena. Unfortunately, it didn't work out for me. I was scared of gaining weight on it, which ironically ended up being pretty much the only side effect I didn't get. My anxiety got to the point where I almost had to go to the mental hospital. I was so tired and distracted with brain fog. It took almost two years for the breakthrough bleeding to stop. I lost so much hair. Probably the worst thing, though, was the cystic acne it gave me and the permanent scars I have from it. I've been rid of this IUD for a year and a half, and while the breakouts have stopped, my cheeks are covered in pockmark-like acne scars from the hundreds, if not thousands (I wish I was exaggerating) of pimples that it gave me. Tretinoin has helped the texture a little bit, but I probably will have these scars, at least to some extent, for the rest of my life."

For Birth Control "I've had my Kyleena for 1 month, and I'm wondering why I didn't choose this sooner! I used birth control pills previous to having Kyleena, and I was absolutely miserable. My estrogen levels were too low, causing irregular bleeding, anxiety, depression, weight gain, etc. I needed a pill with a higher dose of estrogen, however, my doctor would not prescribe a higher dose pill due to my high blood pressure, which was already being worsened by the low dose BCP I was taking. In fact, high blood pressure is the main reason my doctor encouraged me to switch to an IUD. One month in, and I feel like a new woman! My anxiety and depression, while still a bit present, have improved significantly. My blood pressure has dropped to within a normal range. It's freeing to know that I no longer have to remember to take a pill at the same time every day, and I don't have to remember to pack my pills when I won't be at home. I'm acne-prone, and I feel my skin is clearer now than while on the pill."

For Birth Control "After 3 kids, I decided it was time for reliable contraception. I was told by my doctor that Kyleena is the 'least' hormonal contraception. Inserting went okay. That was in the beginning of February 2019. Today is 07/08/19. Here I list some of the changes my body has seen. The most frustrating part is the weight just won't come off. I regret the IUD because I should have waited until I got all my extra weight off. Before getting the Kyleena, I had lost 22 lbs in one month! Now, nothing. I work out, eat moderately healthy, but nothing is happening. My belly is bloated all the time. Like being 5 months pregnant. My bras don't fit anymore, and I always feel pregnant. The side effects are not really nice either. I have lower back pain as I do with regular periods, but I never had sore or painful breasts unless I was pregnant. I am constantly angry. Just so annoyed at everything. I yell more, scream more, and just have no patience at all. I will have it removed."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted in April because I struggled with trying to remember to take the pill and adjusting the times while traveling. The insertion was okay, and the cramps lasted for 3 days. I was used to my period cramps, so it wasn’t anything I haven’t dealt with. I did have spotting for the first three weeks, and then I was fine. By month 4 of insertion, I’ve had more spotting than usual, and my body has been changing. I have gained weight (about 10 pounds), but it could be from the stresses of finding work and moving. My skin, however, has been its worst ever! I have been getting cystic acne and breakouts all the time. By month 5, I really haven’t had a good skin day :( I do get the occasional cramp here or there, but nothing terrible."

For Birth Control "I've had Kyleena for about 5 months now. The insertion was honestly horrible. I was sweaty, I puked, and nearly passed out. The first month had lots of cramping, but it wasn't too unbearable. Overall, I like the Kyleena as my birth control because it isn't something I have to worry about too often. My periods have stopped completely. I just get some light spotting a couple of times a month. My only complaints would just be that it has caused me to have lots of mood swings and depression and anxiety issues, and I've ended up gaining some weight, but that could be my own fault unless the birth control makes my appetite increase a lot."

For Birth Control "I had Paragard and took it out to regulate my cycle, then had Kyleena put in - insertion went fine. I gained a few pounds, and acne got worse (on medication for cystic acne). Those side effects were livable. What I was not prepared for were the gnarly cramps. I've had 2 IUDs inserted, but have never felt anything like the cramps I've felt. It felt like a migraine in my pelvis. Taking it out!"

For Birth Control "So I got the Kyleena in April. It was an uncomfortable cramp feeling for me the last two weeks. All was well, I had the period for the first while, then it was over, and it was really awesome. But then I started gaining weight, growing facial hair and excess body hair, and had cystic acne. I had to get a pelvic exam done, which aggravated the IUD and then caused cramps and a period. Later on in the fall, I started getting backaches and continued gaining weight and more acne, lots of chin hairs and other hairs in places I had never had. I had it removed, my skin is almost cleared up, and I have lost some of the weight I gained. Doesn’t hurt to have it removed either. But I have been on different birth controls for years, and it was horrific to have all the loss of control. Wouldn’t recommend to many. Good luck picking an IUD!"

For Birth Control "I have had Kyleena for a little over 4 months now, and I am deciding to get it removed. After putting up with symptoms for much longer than I should have, I feel that the benefits do not outweigh the risks. I am 20 with no children. Insertion wasn't too bad, being that I usually tolerate pain pretty well, but I have to admit that it was 3 waves of extremely strong cramps, which is exactly what my gyno told me to expect. Post-insertion, I bled for 2 months straight, basically like having a period every day. I also had terrible cramps every day that had me keeling over in pain, which I had never experienced in my life. I decided to put up with it for at least 3-6 months because I really wanted to give it a chance after everything my body had gone through already. I also gained 10-15 lbs, which I can't seem to lose no matter how much or how little I eat. I already have a history of depression and anxiety, and Kyleena only made it far worse. I didn't, and currently don't feel like myself at all."

For Birth Control "I got my IUD in February 2018, and it’s been the best birth control I’ve tried. I’ve gotten no acne from it, maybe a little weight gain, and the only pain I experienced was from insertion and some after. Insertion was rough for me, and I had cramping for a couple of weeks after. Then my periods would come and go but got lighter and lighter. Around the 8-month mark, I had a period that was very light, but the cramps were bad. I’ve had the IUD for about 11 months now, and my period seems to have stopped altogether."

For Birth Control "I got my insertion done on March 25th, 2019. The insertion was bad. Not gonna lie. For me, it was one big long cramp for literally 5 hours. I was shaking awfully bad, but wasn't bleeding as much as she said I would. I made sure to take ibuprofen beforehand and had heating pads. Cramps weren't that bad. Spotted for a few days, and within a week or so, I was back to 'normal.' I have developed 2 large cysts on my right ovary that I didn't have previously. Kind of painful sex, but I've attributed that to the cysts. Swollen breasts, fatigue, headache, and weight gain were my common symptoms for the first 3 months. I finally got my first actual period, and it was pretty painful, but now I think my body is adjusting well. AND no babies!"

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena in December of '17. I am a 32-year-old mom of two. My doctor recommended this for me because it would take away my periods that were already 5-day perfect light periods, I wouldn't even notice it was there. The day of insertion, the actual procedure was quick and just a slight pinch. But the day after, I was in bed with a heating pad, feeling like labor contractions. I called my doctor, they made me come in and do a sonogram. It was perfectly placed. My periods after that went from 5 days to 10 days, and it was old, dark brown, thick blood. Due to this, I got BV every month after my 'period.' When I was able to have sex, he felt it. It would pinch the tip of his penis and even ripped the condom. Then I had to get on a mood stabilizer about 3 months after insertion that the doctor swore it wasn't the IUD. I gained 30 pounds in 1 year. On 12/2/18, I had it removed. On 1/6/19, I found out I was pregnant with my 3rd child. So soon. I miscarried a week later. It was due to my recent IUD removal."

For Birth Control "It’s been about 5 months since my insertion of Kyleena. Now, before Kyleena, I had what others would call the perfect period. It lasted 2-3 days of light bleeding. I had no acne, weighed 110 pounds, experienced no cramps, mood swings, or any period symptoms at all, really. After getting Kyleena, I 100% regret it. Every month, I get the most god-awful cramps, and my breasts get so sore and sensitive I can’t even wear a bra on those days. I experience extreme mood swings that my boyfriend can confirm (poor guy). I get waves of depression quite often, and I have gained 20 pounds since being on Kyleena. I work out religiously and maintain a healthy diet, but I still gained a lot of weight. This is by far my worst experience on birth control, really debating on getting it removed soon. I might wait it out until I hit the 1-year mark, but if you’re researching Kyleena, I highly recommend you discuss in detail the side effects with your doctor and the possibilities of the negative outcomes."

For Birth Control "I am 22 years old and a college student who works full time. I was on the pill (high dosage) for 2 years, took a year off, and then started Kyleena. I've gained 30-40 lbs since starting Kyleena, and this has only been 1 year. There were no extra cravings, but I did swell up (like water weight and bloating). My friends said before working out (no, I didn't lose weight) that I reminded them of a blow-up doll. The menstrual cycle would correlate with how much swelling/bloating I experienced. I know what you're probably thinking, 'Birth control studies have shown there's no direct correlation to weight gain.' But riddle me this, if the hormone (that causes symptoms) is in the birth control and issues didn't begin until you started, doesn't that mean that the issue comes from the birth control? Don't get me started on the excessive out-of-the-blue cramps too! I have scheduled my appointment to have mine removed."

For Birth Control "Honestly, I’m just gonna go ahead and say that Kyleena is the worst birth control I’ve ever been on. I have headaches all the time, cramping, and I’ve gained so much weight, and on top of it, I get acne, which I’ve never had before. I’m going to switch this one out, I think it’s terrible."

For Birth Control "I have had the IUD in for 4 months. For the first three months, I had severe stomach pains that were debilitating (I was on vacation). I still today have stomach pains and have to take at least 2 pain relievers a day. I have bled heavily from the start (I never had long or heavy periods in my life). I have noticed my weight has gone up and is so hard to lose weight. I am constantly bloated, and my boobs have grown two cup sizes. I have been so tired for the past 4 months (I have gotten used to this fatigue) and in terrible moods. Booked in for removal."

For Birth Control "I’m now 2 months post-insertion. In the beginning, I struggled with acne on my face, chest, and back. It has really calmed down, but I still have it more than I used to before. I haven’t weighed myself, but I know I have gained weight since insertion, and that really upsets me. I haven’t cramped that badly since insertion, but my first period was long, about 7 days, and heavy. Kyleena is starting to grow on me, but the weight gain really bothers me. However, I just got married and am in nursing school, so I love not taking a pill every day. I will review again in 6 months!"

For Birth Control "I got this IUD inserted about 2 months ago after being on Lolo (an oral birth control) for about 1.5 years. I stopped because I was gaining a lot of weight, and my acne was worsening from the oral contraceptive. The insertion process was painful but bearable, really similar to a really intense menstrual cramp, however, I took two extra strong Advil beforehand. The first month, I did experience spotting practically every day. It was coupled with mild cramps, and it was pretty annoying. The last month, though, the spotting stopped, my period was super light, and I didn’t have any pain. I’m also not experiencing any symptoms of weight gain or acne at all. I feel so much better than I did before! I did have a very painful yeast infection, and my doctor told me it’s probably a side effect of the IUD. That was a downside. However, I’d recommend the IUD as it is a long-term commitment and requires no upkeep-do your research beforehand, though!"

For Birth Control "I started looking into an IUD because my birth control pill was really acting up. I had been gaining weight, cramps were getting more painful, and mood swings were getting out of control. My doctor recommended Kyleena, and I am SO thankful she did. The procedure was 100% covered by insurance. I won't lie, the insertion hurts, and I experienced about three hours of intense cramping. There was light spotting for two months almost every day, which was annoying but manageable. Six months into having Kyleena inserted, I've lost 20 pounds. I experience some light spotting maybe 1-2 days a month, but no resulting cramps or mood swings. If you can push through those beginning couple of months, the benefits are so worth it, especially if you have been struggling with side effects to the level of hormone in pill contraceptive like I was."

For Birth Control "IUDs are a wonderful option for many women. Unfortunately, something about it just did not react well with my body. Around months 4-7, the bloating, weight gain, and mood swings, especially irritability, started to take over. I noticed a 7-pound weight gain around 4 months and suspected that the IUD was the culprit... but I was also going through some depression in earlier months, which I thought maybe caused it instead. I was so easily irritated, and the bloating and rapid weight gain were affecting me so much that I didn't even want my boyfriend to touch me. I gained another 6 pounds in 1 month-13 pounds total. The bloating got worse, and I definitely felt myself gaining more weight. My doctor gave her 'medical opinion,' but I was not myself, so I got it removed. It's my 2nd day without, and I am having little to no bloating, which feels amazing, and I definitely see an improvement in my mood and energy already. Great birth control for women who don't experience the negatives like I did..."

For Birth Control "I've gained more than 6 kg from the moment I've started with Kyleena (I have had it for like 4 months). I hadn't had any weight gain with Mirena, but with Mirena I was feeling numb. With Kyleena, my sex drive improved, my skin is getting worse, and as I already said, I've gained, and I'm still gaining a lot of weight. I don't eat unhealthy. Recovering from an eating disorder, so I know what I have to eat. I've already planned an appointment with the anesthesiologist to remove my Kyleena and get a copper IUD."

For Birth Control "I’ve had Kyleena for 2 1/2 months. I have a pretty high pain tolerance, and I have NEVER experienced something SO PAINFUL. There’s slight discomfort, and then two huge crampy pinches. After that was over, I thought I’d be okay, but as I went to sit up and get situated, my vision got blurry, and I became extremely nauseous. My blood pressure had gotten pretty low, which is why I was feeling so awful. I had terrible cramps the whole ride home. The cramps would come in waves, every 3 minutes or so, the pain would hit and then would come back after 5 minutes or so. The only way I could alleviate some of the pain was to sit in a hot bath. But after the 3rd or 4th day, the cramps weren’t as intense. I’ve had weight gain and a few other issues since then. So every woman is different, but if you tend to have sensitivities to medications or changes to your body, this probably isn’t for you. I’m ready to have it removed, but am terrified of getting it removed."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena IUD for a total of 3 months, and it wrecked havoc with my body. Previously, I had the copper IUD for 6 years, but due to heavy periods caused by the copper IUD, I had it removed. Insertion of the Kyleena was actually fine and not so painful. Just a little pinch. But for the next 3 months, I suffered horrendous bloating. My weight has always remained the same, even after having two kids, but almost immediately, I started gaining weight. I eventually cut down to just one meal a day and gave up almost everything sweet to see if this would help, but I kept on gaining weight. I had a constant brown discharge every day for 3 months, but it was the bloating that affected me the most. I had it removed almost one week ago. I had heavy bleeding for 4 days after removal. The bleeding has now stopped today, and the bloating has already significantly reduced. Today is the first day after 3 months that I feel like myself again. Sadly, it didn’t work for me."
