For Birth Control "WORST. EXPERIENCE. Awful insertion pain, and I have VERY high pain tolerance, left me in bed for 2 days. I work on my feet. If I work more than 5 hours, severe cramping. Can’t wear skinny jeans for more than 7 hours. Work time in skinny jeans? 3 hours. 3 months in-weight gain after starting a healthy diet and regular exercise. I’ve had 3 yeast infections in 4 months, which I’ve never had before. Month 2-severe depression, which I’ve never experienced before. Had contraction-like cramping the other day that sent me to the ER. I thought it was coming out, but it was in place. Doc said it’s probably worsening my normal cramping pain, and I need to follow up with a doc to be examined more thoroughly. Sooooo $1,800.00 for 15 lb weight gain, worsening acne, depression, the fact I can’t wear my favorite jeans, and this cramping? Yeah. This sucker is COMING OUT, the mind ease of not being pregnant is not worth it."

For Birth Control "This IUD has literally changed my life! Insertion is fairly painful but doesn't hurt long after, you could even drive home. I experienced weight gain and acne, but I control the weight with my diet/exercise and control the acne with face products! I have no mood swings or headaches, which were my issues with birth control. Haven't had a period since I got it, which has also helped my iron level. Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend. Be aware that hormonal contraceptives affect everyone differently."

For Birth Control "The first 2 months with this were pretty good. I noticed some mood changes, but nothing crazy. Then, with what seemed like all of a sudden, I experienced extreme depression, apathy, exhaustion, slight cramping, more acne, mood swings, diminished sex drive, you name it. I have also noticed I have either gained weight or am holding weight due to the stress this IUD is causing my body. I have scheduled to get it removed ASAP, as these side effects are so severe they have impacted my ability to do the things I love. I honestly do not think that this would happen to everyone, but be cautious that it could, and if you notice you're not feeling like yourself, it could be the Kyleena. As for comfort, though, I have had no issues. If I wasn't having the hormonal side effects, I wouldn't have noticed it."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena on 23rd April 2018, so almost exactly 6 months ago. The pill for me: depression, weight gain, migraines made worse, low sex drive, emotional, paranoid, anxious. The Kyleena first 5 months all becoming less frequent with time: cramps, headaches, emotional, bad skin for about 2 weeks. Now: occasional cramping, possibly period related. Period is just very light spotting now. Mood, weight, and sex drive have been unaffected. The Kyleena IUD is quite an investment, but so far it's been worth it. I had a few months of mild discomfort and now don't have to worry about contraception for 4 and a half more years! I'd recommend anyone who has it to wait 6 or 7 months for symptoms to calm down."

For Birth Control "Mirena was too big for my uterus. I could feel it when doing heavy physical activity, but as a birth control, it worked perfectly. My gyno suggested Kyleena since it was a smaller version of the same thing. I've been on it for about a year and a half now, and I'm not sure how I feel. As birth control, it works great. I get sharp cramps about a week before my period, but my periods are all light spotting for a few days, which is nice. However, over the course of a year, my anxiety and depression have skyrocketed. I've always been kind of sad and nervous, but never to this depth and for this long. I also have really bad acne all of a sudden and have gained a good 30 pounds with no change in diet or activity. I don't know if it's worth it for me anymore."

For Birth Control "Horrible experience. I was on it for four months and had to get it removed. I should have gotten it removed in the second month but thought I could bear with the symptoms hoping they would go away. I felt a change in my mood after having it in for only a few days, I quickly became severely depressed, and I started gaining weight even though I was dieting and exercising. I experienced cramps every day, it was horrible. It lightened my periods, but I never had cramps before getting an IUD. I've had it out for 5 months, and my weight is still stalled, but my mental state is much better, but my periods are still really irregular and definitely off. If you have any sensitivity to hormonal birth control, I do NOT recommend this."

For Birth Control "The insertion of Kyleena for me personally was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. I cried in the office and could not move my entire body for a while and calmed myself to prevent a panic attack. After about a half hour, I was slowly able to move to get dressed and leave the doctor's office. The cramps were horrendous after that. The pain didn't subside till after a month. Now every month my cramps still get pretty gnarly. If you're acne-prone, this may not be the IUD for you. I had no idea how much this was going to affect my skin. It's been four months since my IUD insertion, and my acne has calmed down, but I do miss the days when acne wasn't such a big concern except for the one blemish I would get during PMS. I have gained around 35 pounds over four months. I don't want to say that it's all related to the IUD hormones, but I definitely believe it is a factor. For good measure, I'm going to be more strict with my diet to see if I see any positive results."

For Birth Control "I had my IUD inserted in April 2021. It did lighten the flow of my period a little, but I have had my period since I had it inserted. Yes, that is right, 9 months straight! Between April 2021 and January 2022, I only had a total of 12 days period-free. Which was great, but I never knew when I would start bleeding again. Sex made my period start again as well. It wasn't just a little blood, it was a regular heavy flow. Also, it was very difficult to keep any size tampon inserted. Between January 2022 and today, I didn't have my period for 2 weeks, then had sex, and then it was back. Also, I gained 20 pounds. I am very active and went to the gym 5 days a week. The weight would not come off. Getting it removed today!"

For Birth Control "I’ve never had a baby, I’m 18, and I was by myself, except I had my father driving for me. I have very regular periods. I tried the pill, which helped with cramps but only for a short amount of time. My periods were light for 3-4 days and very regular (28 or so), even off the pill, they only got better on the pill, but my problem was weight gain, depression, and cramps that came back. DO NOT LET ANYONE SCARE YOU! Yes, you’ll hear stories, but most people who write reviews do it to warn others! The insertion felt like gas pain... LITERALLY. Granted, I’m used to worse, but I highly recommend it. I got it done Sep 14 and stopped spotting Oct 6. I love Kyleena, and it was great. I have had barely any body acne. Nothing drastic. Very much recommend"

For Birth Control "I've had my Kyleena for over 3 years and had it taken out almost 2 weeks ago. Please keep in mind everyone is different, and this is my personal experience. I loved Kyleena when I first got it and the duration for the following reasons. My acne got better, eventually my periods would either not show up or be very short, like 2-3 days. I no longer experienced much cramping, and I didn't have any complications. Yes, the application and removal HURT! But only for a few moments. Now the negative effects that I experience were weight gain, severe irritability, varied lengths of depression episodes, and insomnia. Having taken it out, I've been slightly more emotional and sensitive, but I'm assuming that's my hormones. However, I've had an extreme burst of energy since it's been removed. I do recommend it, but beware of the moods."

For Birth Control "I am very hot and cold about this IUD. I was bleeding/spotting irregularly for the first six months to one year. My periods have not gotten shorter (last more than a week), but they have gotten lighter. This IUD threw my pH completely off, and it's something I have been trying to get back under control for months now. It also made it a bit harder to lose weight and made me grow some hair on my chin. Overall, I don't regret it, but it really messes your hormones up. Taking it out before the expiration date."

For Birth Control "I am 24, and I decided to get the Kyleena inserted in September 2018, right after having an abortion under general anesthesia. After reading many reviews, I was terrified of the side effects but decided to try it out, especially since I wouldn't have to go through the pain of insertion. I experienced light spotting and cramping for two weeks and then resumed my regular monthly period shortly after, with minimal cramping during the time of the month. No other side effects in terms of weight gain, mood changes, skin changes (surprisingly, as this is my first form of birth control). So far, I am happy with my Kyleena and glad to have peace of mind. Just remember everyone's experience will be different, and you just have to find what works for you. Good luck if you decide to try the Kyleena!"

For Birth Control "I had it put in on August 9, 2021. It's September 27th, 2021, and I am still bleeding. No weight gain, no other side effects, just continuous bleeding. I got it to deal with my PCOS, but I'm not sure if it’s worth it anymore."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena placed in early March, and that was the worst part. Let me tell you, the pain that followed insertion for 4 days after was next to unbearable, and I had already had a child. I figured it would be a walk in the park. I suffered through those first few days with so much pain I felt sick, and my period was like something had been killed. But let me tell you what, ladies, since then I almost forget that it's there. I have had small amounts of spotting when I am due for my period and mild to medium cramps for about a day, but other than that it's been pretty great. No acne, no extreme weight gain (with Nexplanon I gained 65 lbs). I have actually lost weight with little exercise and no diet change. Ladies, it's all about what our bodies can work with. This birth control was my last option before just using condoms all the time, and so far, so good. I think the 4 days of pain is definitely worth the 99% protection for 5 years."

For Birth Control "I hope this is helpful! I am 20 years old and got my IUD placed in July 2018. The insertion was quick and felt like a quick cramp. On a scale from 1 to 10, it hurt like a 3. However, the following hours after and the next couple of days were horrible. Probably the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. I didn’t work for 2 days and laid in bed mostly. I’ve been on the Kyleena for about 8 months, and I am getting it removed this Friday. While I’ve been on it, I gained 20 lbs. Before the IUD, I was very good at maintaining my weight, but now I feel bloated after almost every meal. The only good things about it were that it prevents pregnancy and minimizes my periods. I would not recommend."

For Birth Control "It has been a year and 9 months since I got my IUD. The first few months were pretty weird with cramping and spotting, but once you get through that, it is great! I used to suffer from unbearable cramps, and now I might take one painkiller on my first day, then be fine, and my periods are super light. Didn't experience any weight gain. I highly recommend Kyleena because I don't have to remember to take medicine every day, and after the first few months, I have had noticeably easier periods."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted January 2018. The insert was very, very painful. I spotted for about 6 months after the insertion. Then in June 2018, I had an ectopic pregnancy, which I had to have emergency surgery for in the middle of the night. With Kyleena, I’ve experienced a ton of weight gain, little to no sex drive, and severe depression, and I always have some type of abdominal pain or discomfort. Needless to say, I will be getting this removed ASAP."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena for ~ 9 months. It prevented pregnancy for the entire time I had it in place. I developed facial and bodily hormonal acne and was put on spironolactone, which cleared things up. I also experienced pelvic/abdominal pain, which I wrote off until I went to my gyno, who diagnosed me with a 4-inch complex ovarian cyst. After about 2 months, the cyst resolved on its own, but the pain was still present, so I opted to have it removed, which I think was a good decision. It has been out for ~ 2 weeks, and my mood is better, sex drive up, pelvic pain gone. I stopped the spironolactone, and my skin has been fine. I also want to note that while inserted, I occasionally experienced foul odor and vaginal discharge that hasn't been an issue since removal either. I also gained ~5 lbs since insertion, but can't for sure attribute this to the IUD as I was going through a lot of life changes during this time as well. Everyone is different, but Kyleena wasn't worth it for me."

For Birth Control "I have now made 9 months with Kyleena. My periods are much lighter than my normal long and heavy period. I used to have a high sex drive, now I have a very, very low sex drive. This is the worst part. My orgasms aren't as pleasurable as they used to be. My regular period cramps are less. I gained 12 pounds on this IUD, and I know it's not my fault. I get random headaches at times, which are lesser and lesser as time goes by. I do get leg cramps very easily since I have the IUD. But the IUD is effective. I haven't gotten pregnant, so it's doing the job."

For Birth Control "I’ve had Kyleena for 1 year today. In the first 3 months, I gained 31 lbs, but I finally found a birth control that I loved, so I didn't really care about the weight gain. I had cystic acne all over my face, back, and butt. Then I got diagnosed with IBS-C and interstitial cystitis. I never had a prior issue with either of these things until after my IUD insertion. Ignored it because my sex drive was back, and I didn’t have a period (happy about these things). Then did some looking into it and truly realized how horrible hormonal birth control is for your body. Kyleena specifically is linked to miscarriages and the inability to get pregnant after removal. Not worth it anymore. Getting it taken out and switching to Paragard. As soon as I made the decision to switch (2 weeks before my 1 year mark), I started heavily bleeding. Haven’t stopped since. I’ve had a 2-week period after a year of no period. So bye-bye, Kyleena! You did your job, but not at the expense of my health and happiness."

For Birth Control "I have had Kyleena since about March of 2018. I like Kyleena for the most part, but I do have a few issues with it that have recently made me think about getting it removed. To start, my biggest issue is how long it makes my period last. My period almost every time is 14 days long, sometimes 20+ days. Other things that I’m noticing are that my breasts hurt all the time! It has caused me bad acne and extreme weight gain (fluctuating between 20 to 30 pounds). The thing that has been giving me a huge concern over the last few months is my blood pressure. I can’t exactly say that it is causing the increase in my blood pressure, but it could be (I have pre-existing hypertension). Since getting it, I have gone from one hypertensive medication to 2, and now my second medication had to be doubled in dosage. I plan to talk to my HCP soon to get recommendations."

For Birth Control "I had been using the NuvaRing for 6+ years, but it made me gain a ton of weight, so my doctor suggested Kyleena. At first, I was nervous because of all the negative stigma in regards to IUDs, but as I did my research, I found it wasn’t as bad as it seemed. I was SO nervous about the insertion of it. I had Googled people's experiences, and they were all horror stories. But I’m here to tell you it isn’t that bad at all! I prepped myself by taking 2 Aleve and a Xanax before I went to the doctor. The whole process took about 8 minutes. I was anticipating the worst pain, but it is just bad pressure and nothing more. The cramping afterward is comparable to period cramps. So if you are unsure of getting it because of the insertion or pain afterward, I’m here to tell you it is not nearly as bad as you think it will be."

For Birth Control "I have had my Kyleena in for about two or three months. I bleed basically all the time right now. I gained 7 pounds initially, but I am now dropping the weight. The hormones did affect me, and still do, but I haven’t gotten pregnant! It does its job! Just be sure to pay attention to your body. It can be frustrating, and yet effective."

For Birth Control "28 years old, no kids. I got the Kyleena on Jan 11th. It was the worst minute of my life, to be honest, it was traumatic, really. The first 3 days, I had severe cramps to where I couldn't get out of bed, pain medicine didn't help, but a heating pad did. The next 1.5 months, I had sporadic cramps and discharge/bleeding that went away, and my period has gotten shorter/lighter. Two weeks after insertion, I started noticing severe anxiety/depression to the point that it was debilitating. I gained about 15 pounds in 1 month (I'm 5'5, I was 130, got up to 145ish), my diet/activity did not drastically change. Just when I was ready to have it removed due to the side effects, month 3, the anxiety and depression went away almost overnight, and I have started losing weight. I still have bad cramps a few days before my period starts, but they are few and far between. Tylenol does help now. It was a REALLY bad 3 months, but I'm glad I stuck it out, it's worth not stressing about birth control for the next 5 years."

For Birth Control "I’ve had my Kyleena in for about a month now. Prior to that, I had the Mirena for about a year before it fell out of place. I decided to get Kyleena instead of the Mirena because Kyleena has less hormones; less side effects. Although the Mirena isn’t horrible, I did get major acne and gained 20 pounds. So, the Kyleena insertion wasn’t too terrible, it lasted maybe less than 3 minutes. I took two ibuprofen before, so that helped a lot, and I did breathing techniques (I recommend researching breathing techniques!) So far, I’ve experienced MAJOR cramps. It’s very random, some will be throughout the day, some will be just for five minutes or so. I’d feel like I wanted to pass out/throw up. I’ve also been randomly spotting (not consistent) for an entire month. I just had my first period, and it lasted two weeks; usually, my periods are 3-5 days. I hope the spotting and cramps go away! Those are my only major concerns. No acne or weight gain yet."
