For Birth Control "My experience on Kyleena seems to be a bit different than everyone else's, so I figured I'd share! Having the Kyleena was an awful experience: I had a very dramatic weight loss of about 50 lbs (within about 4 months) because I was either constantly throwing up, nauseous, or experiencing diarrhea. I lost the weight so rapidly that my skin became loose on my body and everything sagged. I was also losing my hair constantly, and I had the worst panic attacks in my life (as well as increased depression/anxiety). Oddly, it actually increased my sex drive, which has never happened on anything else. I asked my doctors if the Kyleena could be causing all of these problems, and they just consistently brushed it off. After having it in for almost 9 months, I couldn't take it anymore, it was removed. After doing so, it was a night and day difference! I became myself again :)"

For Birth Control "*Easy insertion due to natural ovulation, cervix softener, Valium, and Ibu. *Bleeding for 4 months almost nonstop. 95% spotting. Daily. Increased after any sexual activity. *Experienced a decidual cast in the 3rd week. *Breast tenderness, swelling, PAIN when leaning into something or doing a self-exam. All the time. *At least 2 'periods' a month (just darker/heavier, but short). *Cramps - random. *Mood - Depression okay, anxiety up. Feel spacey a lot. Feel ADHD meds don't quite do their job anymore. *Weight - retain fluid, have to take a fluid pill around 'period' days and randomly. Always hungry, even on stimulant. Have begun gaining in month 4. *Acne - prone to hormonal, but NONE. *Genital - Labial cysts are frequent, maybe due to pads constantly used. Always itchy because my skin hates pads, but can't use anything else for various reasons. Currently a yeast infection. *Emotions - cry randomly and once a month sob at the most ridiculous things. Not a crier. Not quite a fan."

For Birth Control "Please do not ever get Kyleena. It has been the absolute worst thing to happen to me. From extreme pain during insertion, to developing ovarian cysts, to worsening my anxiety to a point where it is unmanageable, and finally causing extreme acne. I am scheduled to have it removed finally after doctors telling me to keep it. The absolute worst health decision I ever made. Please be careful."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena for 3 months. Insertion was not bad at all and just felt like a really bad cramp. I took some ibuprofen beforehand along with a med to dilate my cervix per my doctor's recommendation. I bled for a month after insertion and became severely depressed, anxious, and lethargic. I have a history of being depressed, but this was on another level. Once I stopped bleeding, the depression eased up a little bit, and I have been mildly depressed since. Other side effects I have dealt with are increased acne and weight gain (about 10 pounds). Due to these negative side effects, I decided to have it removed today. The process was painless and only took a few minutes. If you don't have mental health issues, you will probably be fine, but if you do, I would be hesitant about this IUD. Also, some of my side effects could have been worsened by quarantine/coronavirus. What I liked most about the Kyleena was its low maintenance and lighter periods."

For Birth Control "So I just want to start this off by saying I’m sure Kyleena works for some but not for everyone. I don't do well with hormones. When I was researching, I found ParaGard, which had no hormones. I went to my gynecologist, and I told her I wanted the ParaGard and absolutely no hormones. She mentioned Kyleena, but I still said I didn’t want any hormones. So I thought we agreed on ParaGard. I got the IUD inserted, and it was painful, something I had never felt before, but nothing I couldn’t live with. I had really bad cramping in the beginning, then it got better. After the 2 1/2 months came around, I would get random swings of extreme depression and anxiety. It was affecting my personal and professional life. I thought I was going crazy. I later found out she put in the wrong one, it was Kyleena. Ladies, I really recommend being very stern with what you want to your doctors, and before you do anything that is going to mess with your hormones, get them tested to see if it will work with your body."

For Birth Control "The initial insertion was okay, and then I had a kind of brown sludge discharge that lasted for 4 months. It finally stopped, and the good news was my period had stopped along with it. I didn't notice many adverse effects until the 2.5 - 3 year mark. After having this in long-term, my hormones went crazy. I developed panic attacks, anxiety, brain fog, insomnia, and have never had any of these things in my life. I spoke with many psychologists, and finally, upon advice from my therapist, I took the Kyleena out and had my hormones tested. My progesterone (the calming hormone Kyleena releases) was almost 0. Your body becomes dependent on the birth control. If I had known the havoc this would cause, I would have never gotten the IUD. Hormonal birth control can cause so many long-term problems doctors don't warn you about, and many of my friends had the same crash. If you do choose to get this IUD, please, please closely observe how it impacts your body. In my opinion, not worth it at all."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena about a month ago and immediately had a bad reaction to it. Started sweating, bad cramps, and nonstop bleeding. I have now developed pretty bad anxiety when I had gotten my anxiety very well under control for the past 7 months. Now I get dizzy spells nearly every day and feel like I'm going to black out, it's hard to breathe and just a lot of brain fog. I know some people love it, but personally, I have had a bad experience."

For Birth Control "After the insertion, I had mild bleeding then spotting for at least 2 weeks. I also had leg pain and lower back pain for 2 weeks after, just like the doctor said I would. The leg pain went away, but the lower back pain lasted for 6 months. I had major cramping every time I was going to have a bowel movement, never stopped spotting, had pain with a pressure-like feeling. My migraines got worse and more frequent, my appetite was lost due to feeling nauseous for the 6 months. I lost 10 pounds, felt foggy, and experienced major anxiety and depression with dark thoughts. The doctor told me these were 'weird' symptoms and asked if I was sure I wanted it out. As soon as she pulled it out, the pressure in my head left, and I can't wait to start feeling better. It sadly did not work for me."

For Birth Control "I had insertion of Kyleena on 02/03/2019, and since then, I have been patiently waiting for the side effects to subside. I had bleeding after insertion that turned into a full-blown period lasting 18 days. It seems to be common that my period comes at the same time every month and still lasts almost 3 weeks. Even when I'm not fully bleeding, there's always some type of smelly discharge. Haven't really been able to have sex without feeling insecure about blood or smells. Super annoying, I guess it is effective birth control since you can never have sex without a period interrupting you. I also have the worst cramps and bleed heavier than I ever did on my regular period. I did lose weight, but I have increased anxiety and mood swings. I considered taking it out sooner, I really wanted this to work, but all of the side effects almost aren't worth it to me."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena for two months before I had it removed. Everybody reacts differently to different forms of birth control, and this one is not for me. My body is very sensitive to hormones, including those in IUDs, which are less systemic than in oral contraceptives. What I liked about the Kyleena: insertion only felt like a bad cramp, my periods were lighter and cramp-free, no weight gain (actually experienced weight loss from my own effort to prep for spring break), my well-endowed partner did not feel the strings, and I did not get pregnant. Why I had it removed: depression, anxiety, mood swings, insomnia, heart palpitations, and lack of motivation. A week post-removal, I finally feel like my normal self again. No more hormones for me."

For Birth Control "Horrible BC method! Most of the reviews on here are only about insertion and have only had Kyleena for a day or so. I had Kyleena for 14 months. I personally didn't have an issue with insertion. A month after Kyleena, I started gaining weight rapidly despite not changing my diet or exercise routine. I started feeling tired all the time, I felt depressed, anxious, and just genuinely not myself. A few months went by and I started losing a TON of hair. Fast forward to 12 months post-insertion. I missed my period, and the next month I started developing SEVERE cystic acne. I have never had acne like that before. I went to the doctor and they kept telling me there was no way it was from Kyleena (eye roll). They checked my blood, did ultrasounds, and all my labs came back consistent with a woman with a PCOS diagnosis. After 2 months of removal, EVERYTHING has improved. Kyleena was the worst decision of my life!"

For Birth Control "Okay, so I’ve had the Kyleena for over two years now. Insertion was painful but not unbearable. For the first 2 weeks, I bled about the amount of a normal period or less. I suffer from very irregular periods, and I have all of my life (I am now 21). Now, since being on Kyleena, my periods have completely vanished, and I haven’t had a menstrual cycle in over a year now. Sometimes I get occasional cramping. I also gained 20 pounds in about two years, but now I’m slowly starting to lose the weight. As well, I suffered with acne a lot of my life. After insertion, my acne was a lot worse, but finally now it’s pretty much gone. I’ve never gotten pregnant, so it’s working. Also, during the beginning, my hormones affected my mood, but it took about 8-12 months for that to even out. I also experienced mild depression and anxiety, which may or may not have to do with my hormones. It’s been two years now, and everything seems to be normalized for me, besides the minimal cramping. I hope this helps."

For Birth Control "My midwife suggested Kyleena birth control since I was breastfeeding, and you can still conceive without a period. Discussed my experience the last time I was on the pill (suicidal thoughts and increased anxiety, it was awful) and was nearly in tears because I never want to experience that stuff again. She mentioned an IUD, and while Kyleena has hormones, it is quite a low dose, so we opted to give it a try. I got my period at 6 months postpartum. They were fairly light, but I noticed they would sometimes last up to 9 days. I'm now 14 months postpartum, and my period is almost nonexistent. Spotting for a few days, nothing horrible. For me, Kyleena has been a blessing. The only negative thing is that I get about 1 day of bad cramping, like ovulation cramping that sometimes makes me feel nauseated. Overall, it is the best birth control I've been on. Insertion was a tad uncomfortable, but for those few minutes of discomfort, it is worth it because we are not ready for baby #2 just yet. I am 29, had it placed when I was 28."

For Birth Control "As far as being a contraceptive with Kyleena, I haven't had any issues. I like feeling very confident that it's working and that I don't have to remember a pill every day. My period has stopped, which is honestly very nice to not have to worry about bleeding. The insertion was horrible, but that's probably because I just had a Paragard removed. My issues have been with the side effects. I believe I'm very susceptible to hormones, and I've had a lot of mood issues since getting the Kyleena-increased anxiety, apathy, sadness, numbness, etc. Not unlike my experience on the pill. I also wake up bloated every morning, even though I've tried cutting out the things in my diet I know might give me that reaction. My boobs are almost constantly sore and unpredictably swollen. I also have light cramping most days. It kind of feels like I'm constantly PMSing."

For Birth Control "I thought I would share my experience since I’ve been on Kyleena for about a year now. I was someone who never got cramps before, so I was very discouraged when I started getting them every month along with my period. The only upside to this BC is the fact I don’t really have a period. It’s super light, and some months I don’t even notice it. Now, a year in, I have really bad acne on my back and chest, I’m always so tired to the point where I don’t even want to get out of bed, and I can sleep 14 hours and still feel tired enough to sleep more. I’ve also been feeling a dark fog or cloud in my mind and feel very irritable and sad all the time. It’s making me super anxious to the point where my appetite is completely gone. I am planning on making an appointment to get it removed because if these side effects are from it, it’s totally not worth it. I just want to get back to the normal hormone levels of my body."

For Birth Control "I've had Kyleena for about 3 months. Insertion wasn't bad, just some cramps for an hour or so. Overall, this has not been worth it for me. I have never had more than one pimple at a time on my face, but after getting Kyleena, my face is covered in zits. The worst of all of it is the mood swings and terrible anxiety. I don't feel like myself at all. I cry about literally everything. I get random bouts of intense anxiety and panic attacks and serious irritability. Getting the IUD taken out next week. Will not go back on hormonal BC after this."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena in October of 2018, and it wasn't very painful to get put in at all. I think that aspect really depends on what you're like pain tolerance-wise. I liked it a lot at first, I was able to have sex with my boyfriend and not worry about anything. I spotted a little bit for the first six weeks, mostly brown weird discharge that was kind of a turn-off. That cleared up, but then I noticed I had started to gain weight and feel INCREDIBLY anxious ALL THE TIME. I didn't know this was a side effect. I struggled with it before, just a little bit, but not to the crippling point it is currently at. My libido also tanked, and that defeats the whole purpose of even having it for me. I love the ease of knowing I'm not pregnant, but the insane mood swings and depression and anxiety are absolutely NOT worth it to me. I have an appointment to take it out six months after insertion, and I am so excited for the light at the end of this anxiety tunnel."

For Birth Control "I used to be in love with my Kyleena because I didn’t get a period (maybe only 5 times in the past 2.5 years). I had never been on any other birth control prior to being on this and, unlike a lot of reviewers, didn’t experience a lot of pain during insertion (although I’m worried about the pain when it comes out!!!). But after reading these reviews and my own experiences, I desperately want my Kyleena out! I’ve been experiencing pretty awful cystic acne (on and off) that I’ve had to go through rounds of doxycycline, minocycline, and spironolactone for. Besides that, I’ve been experiencing extreme anxiety and panic attacks, which I never dealt with. After reading reviews, I realized that I’m not alone. Before Kyleena, I experienced a few years of awful severe cystic acne and had mood swings but never anxiety attacks. I would not recommend this medication if you have some of these issues too."

For Birth Control "I have Kyleena for a year now. I had it inserted a month after my second child was born and had no problem with the procedure. I chose Kyleena over Mirena because it has fewer hormones and you’re supposed to still have your period, what I thought to be closer to a natural thing. I bled and had light pelvic discomfort for three months. After that, I had irregular bleeding and spotting every single month. In one particular month, I bled so much I had to change pads every two hours, and the following two months after that, I had cramps and spots, but no real blood, which made me resort to a pregnancy test. I have also experienced very high levels of anxiety and some weight gain, discharges with a strong smell, cramping, and some acne. I really want it removed but need to decide the next form of birth control first."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena IUD two months after giving birth to my son. The insertion was relatively painless, and I only experienced cramping for about two days and bleeding for three. However, a month later, I got my period, which lasted for an entire six weeks. It stopped for two weeks, but now I've been experiencing endless spotting for the past month. I've been extremely angry over small things and cried all the time. My anxiety has gotten so bad that I can barely go to work, and I experience random cramps and back pain throughout the day. I can't function normally anymore, and I want it out so badly, but I lost my health insurance, so I'm stuck. It's made me feel crazy, which is not who I am. I never used to cry or get upset over anything. It has taken a toll on my boyfriend, my friends, and my life in general. I am absolutely miserable, and I do not recommend it at all."

For Birth Control "My GYN recommended Kyleena for my PCOS/heavy periods. Insertion was horrific, as I have a tilted pelvis, it took three GYNs and an ultrasound to finally insert it. I suffered cramps for 3 months/constant spotting, but not heavy bleeding. After 3 months, periods stopped, which was the only benefit of this IUD for me. My side effect symptoms: dizzy spells, memory loss, foggy brain, weight gain, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, mood swings, extreme fatigue. I just felt so awful, like a woman of 80 rather than 40. I went to see a holistic doctor who advised me to get it removed immediately. After 18 months of having it, I had the IUD removed, and I already feel I have much more mental clarity. It's only 5 days, and I feel much more like my old self. Yes, I am having a heavy period, but in hindsight, this is better for me than all the other symptoms I suffered."

For Birth Control "I was absolutely fine at first, very smooth fitting (some pain but only for a very short time). But after about nine months, my periods stopped altogether, and since then, I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety, it’s crippling! I’ve also had nonstop stomach and pelvic pain, back pain, uterine spasms, headaches, breast pain, and adult acne. To note, I have only had very minor stomach/pelvic pain in the past and only during periods, I have never had back pain nor unexplained breast pain or uterine spasms! I have had none of these symptoms for a prolonged period of time. These symptoms have been going on for over 5 months now, until I read these reviews, and the resemblances are absolutely uncanny. I am getting the IUD removed today! This is not to say that you will have a negative experience with the Kyleena IUD, as everybody is different. This is just to reach people that are experiencing these symptoms. You are not alone!"

For Birth Control "I regret this so much that I'm getting it taken out in a few days. Got it in 7 weeks postpartum. Hurt a lot, I bled after for weeks and weeks, actually more so than after I had my daughter. Also, with no change in my eating habits, I actually weigh 20 pounds more than I did full-term pregnant. I've been doing an hour of cardio plus walking 15,000 steps a day and no change. Also, my anxiety has been through the roof to the point where I've had to get on Zoloft to somewhat control it. That being said, this is a different experience for everyone and works for a lot of people, but if you have had issues with weight or your mental health, proceed with caution when getting this or other hormonal IUD."
