For Anxiety "Hydroxyzine was prescribed to me for anxiety after a stillbirth, and now I'm so tired all day long that I can't function well enough to take care of my living child. I hate that this drug is offered as an alternative to benzodiazepines. At least I can function during the day on those."

For Anxiety "I've been on hydroxyzine on and off for 3 years, and it has saved my life. Sometimes I take it more than I want to, but it has completely helped with my anxiety attacks and my insomnia, as well as with my nausea, tummy troubles, and itchy skin. I started off with 25 mg and now I'm at 100 mg once at night. I don't ever take it during the day. It makes me too tired. I'm now trying to not take it as much, but sometimes my brain has a mind of its own, and I have panic attacks for no reason, and it helps. I'm not big on taking meds, and I'm not big on big pharma, but I have nothing but praise for it. The only downfall is sometimes the next morning I'm groggy and grouchy, sometimes a little out of it. But I'd rather have that than no sleep at all or be in an anxious mess. I've learned to kind of cope with it and work my way through it. I hope it helps others."

For Anxiety "Have taken this off and on for a couple of months and had adverse reactions to it (just 25 mg). Now that I have anxiety, I'm trying 10 mg, and it is making me really tired during the day. The first night I took it around 2:00 am, so I thought that is why I'm tired, but last night I took it around 9:00, and it kept me awake then kind of in a dream state the rest of the night. I'm going to try it a little longer before I decide whether this is going to work or not. Kind of makes me a little depressed too."

For Anxiety "My Dr. prescribed me hydroxyzine for sleep and anxiety, and it works, but the next day you feel too tired, and if you suffer from depression, it can make you somewhat suicidal because it made me feel very foggy, and I couldn't focus or concentrate on anything."

For Sedation "I have been on this for a little while, I have not been taking them, though. Last night I took two, one pill is 100 mg. I have always had an issue with sleeping. It was either not sleep at all or have very bad nightmares. I was so tired and couldn't sleep, so I took them. I passed out around 8 pm and woke up around 2 pm. I didn't wake up once, although I felt like death all day. I was still tired, and I felt like a zombie."

For Anxiety "Reading people's experiences is incredible because this medication has been amazing for me. 8/10 because it makes you exhausted. I mean I’m on 50 mg twice a day or when required (100 mg max per day), and sometimes I take 150 if I know it’s gonna be a particularly stressful day or I have to speak publicly at all. But overall, this has decreased my anxiety and kept me from starting benzos, which is great because I appreciate a doctor who doesn’t jump right for them. I have bipolar disorder, so I’m also on Wellbutrin 450, lamotrigine 200 x2 a day, and Topamax 150. Wellbutrin has helped the exhaustion, so if you’re looking for a good antidepressant to pair up with it, that’s a safe bet."

For Anxiety "Got prescribed Atarax for insomnia and anxiety, and each time I’ve taken it, I get extremely tired, my vision starts to spin, and it makes me dizzy like being way too drunk. It also makes my anxiety so much worse, and my mouth gets so bone dry on it I feel like I’m gonna shrivel up and dehydrate."

For Allergic Urticaria "I've been using hydroxyzine for 6 months for my chronic hives. It's written every 6 hours, but I take it only twice a week as needed. I take it before bedtime, it kicks in after 2 hours, the itching will stop, and most of the hives will go away by the time I fall asleep. But the next day when I try to wake up, that is the awful part. I can't open my eyes, I feel heavy and super tired, even if I slept for 8 hours, it will feel like I never slept at all!! I wake up with no choice to go to work, and I feel grumpy and angry, and that's how it is for the entire day. I hate taking this pill because it has those side effects, but I have no other solution for my situation. Hoping to find another antihistamine that will not have the same side effects."

For Anxiety "As a veteran who suffers from PTSD/panic disorder/anxiety. I have taken this medication when I have panic attacks, and it has helped me. It's fast acting, I will say within 20-30 minutes. Now, it does make me sleepy, makes me feel groggy. I won’t say it takes the edge off completely, I will still have some anxiety throughout the day, but I only take it as needed to help with my really bad days. I don’t take it daily because it does make me feel sleepy and just lethargic. There are times that 25mg have worked, but I usually take 50mg."

Hydroxyzine for Anxiety "I thought this would help my anxiety and calm me down with zero side effects whenever I want. Boy, was I wrong. There have been only negative side effects after taking a combined amount of 50 mg in the last 2 days. First of all, it makes me dead tired, so tired that I can't get up from the bed. That lasts for about 4-5 hours after taking only 12.5 mg. Other terrible side effects were lower libido, becoming almost sexually numb, depersonalization got worse, I actually had almost a panic attack, I got hypnic jerks, and sometimes felt like I couldn't breathe when I tried to sleep. Still feeling the effects of it after almost 24 hours of not taking any. Never going to take this poison anymore."

For Anxiety "My doctor prescribed hydroxyzine for my anxiety. I was taking it along with my antidepressant. Wow. This medicine turned me into a zombie. If I wasn't asleep, I was completely lethargic. After I stopped taking my antidepressant, I decided to take hydroxyzine to see if it would still make me super tired. Yep. It also made me extremely grumpy and impatient."

For Anxiety "People writing here are not happy either, and we need to be proactive with our doctors. This did NOT help; my nightmares were vivid and no patient should settle for that as a way to be rid of an Rx that could actually work for me so I am not anxious and can have a good life. I also was concerned my BP was up; never had it before; felt like my heart was racing, went to a cardiologist I trust and was okay, though blood pressure was causing it to feel like racing. It's obviously the meds. I also took Trazodone for sleep/anxiety, had horrific nightmares, no warning on either med; both Rx's caused a hangover effect and I was tired all day. Not happy with medical care lately; missing doctors caring about us first. Maybe having and taking more time with patients, listening, solving, and providing real needs would reduce our 'opioid' situation in the U.S.: it's the worst healthcare system in the world."

For Anxiety "I'm currently on 10 mg of Calexa, but will be increasing to 15 mg, then to 20 mg. This medication helps me get to sleep, it didn't put me to sleep, but it helped. It has helped when my anxiety was feeling out of control. I usually take 25 mg or 50 mg when needed. One side effect is it does make me tired, but when I need to sleep, that's okay. Overall, not bad."

For Anxiety "I was prescribed hydroxyzine and took it one time for panic attacks 50 mg, it sent me into a deeper panic attack and made me tired beyond belief. I sat up for hours waiting for the effects to wear off. I'm sure it's just how it reacted to my body chemistry, but be aware that it makes you a little high, and it wasn't a good one for me. It works for some but not everyone. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have tried everything else."

For Anxiety "I took this drug for the first time on July 28th for anxiety. At first, the dry mouth made it harder to breathe, which is, of course, a no-no for anxiety folks. I did sleep slightly better without feeling knocked out and had a lot of dreams, but no nightmares. I also had severe stomach cramps and diarrhea for about 10 minutes in the middle of the night. I seemed to have a slight amount of anxiety relief, but also an increase. The lethargy from the medication made me less motivated to care for daily tasks, which then piled up and created more anxiety and agitation. Even so, I could see it being effective for some individuals, just be aware of the possible side effects before beginning this treatment."

For Anxiety "Hydroxyzine worked when I first got on it. I was told that it didn't cause tolerance. Now it's been a year, and it doesn't do anything anymore. It used to make me feel tired and relaxed, but I don't get those effects anymore. I hate this stupid med."

For Anxiety "This medication does help with my anxiety, but after about an hour, I'm so tired. I have trouble staying awake, and then I sleep on and off for half the day. On a better note, though, it does help me control my anxiety attacks."

For Anxiety "I was prescribed 50 mg once at bedtime and up to 3 per day as needed for panic attacks and severe anxiety. The first day I started this, I felt fine, and then I woke up the next morning. Around 10:30 a.m., I started falling asleep again, uncontrollable narcolepsy and micro-sleeping at work. I have never experienced anything like this in my life. I am not the type of person to carelessly fall asleep, and I actually have a very hard time falling asleep in general, but this medication makes me feel so tired and hungover the next day that my body uncontrollably micro-sleeps: eyes rolling back, slurring, etc. I tried it for 3 more days after this initial response, and every day has been bad. I am fighting the urge to call off work because I'm scared I will fall asleep at my desk and lose my job. I do not recommend this medication at all, stay away, you won't perform as highly mentally or physically. I am discontinuing this medication immediately after almost falling asleep driving today. Awful."

For Anxiety "Was prescribed this for anxiety 2 years ago. Took it faithfully just like Dr. said. Constantly exhausted all day, every day. Thought it was from a recent “major” surgery I had that messed with hormones. I kept saying to Dr. about being exhausted all day, and he never mentioned this was used as a sedative! I had even asked about another drug he put me on at the same time doing this, all he said was no (no light bulb went on that it could be this drug? He should have known that). I (on my own) stopped taking it about a week ago and feel soooooo much better! Anxiety has calmed since life took us in a different direction than before, so that’s better too."

For Anxiety "Long story short, the hydroxyzine helped me get back to normal somewhat after having severe panic physical manifestations during the course of this summer and fall. It helped me wean off of clonidine, which was making my panic worse. I take it in the morning. At first, I had severe dry mouth, but that subsided. It does make me very tired, makes me yawn a lot, and I feel the medicine really kicks in after 6 hours after taking it. I sleep well with vivid dreams. This is the only thing that has helped. There are still some situations that I get the panic, adrenaline rush, but they become manageable with some effort."

For Sedation "I am 20 and was prescribed this for insomnia. I took 50 mg, and an hour later, I became very drowsy and slept straight through the night. Woke up at 9 and was so tired I just wanted to sleep. Around 1 pm, I passed out until 4. Definitely helped me get some sleep at night, but I do not like how I was too tired to function today. I will try taking 25 mg tonight at a lot earlier time."

For Anxiety "I could never tell if this truly worked because it would make me so insanely tired. I took it before work one day when I didn’t fully realize this side effect and almost nodded off standing up. If you take this before bed, I could see this working for you."

For Anxiety "I just recently started sertraline and found it to cause anxiety and nausea when starting up and an increase in symptoms. I was already on 0.5 clonazepam twice daily and have built a tolerance to it, so it wasn't helping. Both my doc and I felt it wasn't a good time to wean off while starting up a new medication until I was on the correct dose and settled. So, I asked for hydroxyzine, which I was previously prescribed by a different doctor. I was prescribed 50 mg 3x a day, but I take it as needed, usually once or twice a day, sometimes not at all. While it doesn't calm like a benzo, it does make you a little tired, which can, in turn, help take the edge off anxiety. It is great for helping with sleep. I do find it has caused me to feel like I need to eat after taking it, and I have gained a bit of weight on it as a result. But other than that, I am happy with it."
