Hydroxyzine for Anxiety "I'm 18, and I've never been on medications before. I have performance and social anxiety. So when I went to my doctor and asked for something to help me survive my everyday life, he recommended Atarax. But I have been taking them for 2 weeks now with no effect whatsoever. Granted, they are only 10 mg and small as a breadcrumb, but I was at least expecting some effect from it. The only thing I felt was nausea and dizziness. I must say I'm quite disappointed."

For Anxiety "My doctor prescribed hydroxyzine for my panic attacks, and it works wonderfully. I have also noticed that it helps with lots of other things, like nausea and falling asleep. I have also used it before flying, as I get anxious on planes. Overall, just a great drug for anxious people like me."

For Sedation "I'm giving this medication a 5 because it did not help with sleep at all. HOWEVER, I found this medication very useful for nausea and dizziness. I occasionally get dizzy spells with nausea. I was told that when this happens, I get small crystal formations inside my ear canal, which cause the issue. I used to take Dramamine for it, which helped some. I find that Hydroxyzine works much more efficiently. I recently was sick with food poisoning, LOTS of nausea almost 24 hours a day for nearly a week. This medication was a godsend for relieving the nausea."

For Nausea/Vomiting "This worked wonders for me. I take hydroxyzine for sleeping/panic attacks, so when I was sick the past couple of weeks, I would take hydroxyzine when I needed to. The nausea went away about 15 minutes after I first took it. I didn’t know it was the hydroxyzine that helped, so I continued to suffer until a large storm rolled in (I’m terrified of storms). I took another 75 mg of hydroxyzine to calm myself down and whew, the nausea was completely gone, so I knew that it was the hydroxyzine. I’m almost at 2 weeks with no break in the nausea until I take hydroxyzine. It’s gonna be a weird conversation with my doctor about needing a follow-up."

For Anxiety "This worked at first for like an hour. I immediately had rebound anxiety, though, awful stomach pain, could not sleep. I was even nauseous. This is my second time taking this, and it makes me feel awful."

For Anxiety "Well, it did its job. It took away my nausea and stopped an active anxiety attack, but it knocked me out. I have emetophobia, which is the phobia of vomiting. Once I get a stomach ache, it's a battle for me to stop the anxiety attack that is most likely going to happen. I did have some really messed up dreams and got cold sweats. I don't sleep well, so I don't know if it was just from being knocked out and in a deep, deep sleep or what."

For Anxiety "After experiencing a severe panic attack, I had to go to the Emergency Room. To manage my anxiety, I started taking the medicine that was prescribed to me. Although I have suffered from anxiety since sixth grade, it had never been so bad before. I became dependent on the medicine and felt uncomfortable going anywhere without it, despite the fact that it made me feel drowsy. In addition to anxiety, I also have emetophobia, which causes me to feel nauseous every day due to my fear of throwing up. However, when I take the medicine, not only does it calm my anxiety, but it also relieves my nausea. The downside is that the medication is intended for short-term use of about 4 to 5 months. Despite this, I take 50 mg as needed 4 times daily, spaced 6 hours apart. Nowadays, I usually only take one pill a day."

For Nausea/Vomiting "I have been taking hydroxyzine 10 mg for years. I was prescribed this so long ago, I can’t remember what for. I think it was due to bladder issues. If I do not take this med before bed, I become severely nauseous within an hour of waking. I have tried to wean down to 5 mg by taking 1/2, but I fear I will never be able to completely come off it."

For Sedation "I was prescribed this medication to help me sleep. I take it with Lortab and Xanax. It really helps with sleeping, but if I don't eat before I take it, the nausea is really bad, which is strange because it's also prescribed for nausea and vomiting."

For Anxiety "I was prescribed this at the time for anxiety/insomnia due to marijuana withdrawals. (Yes, they are real if you abuse it.) I was a chronic smoker for 3 years and had suffered really bad anxiety and insomnia for 3 months coming off Mj. My doc prescribed me this. At the time, it didn’t do much for my anxiety, but it did help me sleep and make my stomach calm down. I also suffer from emetophobia, so anytime I feel nauseous I blow out into full panic mode. After getting through the Mj withdrawals, the Vistaril I noticed has been working a lot better. I think if you have very high functioning anxiety it’s not going to work for you. But if it’s just mild, it will work wonders. Don’t give up on it. Also, due to other comments, there is no “weaning off” this… it’s not addictive or habit forming, so yeah. That’s my experience. Hope this helps someone."

For Anxiety "HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE.... I took this with an open mind knowing it was an antihistamine. I mean, how bad could an allergic medicine be that also helps with anxiety... Exactly one hour after taking it, the nightmare began. I started feeling sluggish, but not a normal Benadryl-type feeling for anyone that has taken that. No, this was like a feeling that my mind was starting to drift on its own. I started feeling very nauseous and decided to take a hot shower. This is where things got worse. Right before I got in, I looked at my phone and the words felt like they were in Japanese. Although they weren't and I could read them. I know that sounds crazy, but it was a troubling experience and feeling. I started to feel like it was morning outside, although it was 10:30 pm at night. It was almost as if I was dreaming while I was awake. My body kept going down while my brain was revving up. It was like my brain and body were doing the opposite. I couldn't finish my shower as I started shaking."

For Nausea/Vomiting "Ulcer veteran here. Sixteen years ago, I had 2 ulcers. Needless to say, that's taken care of, but I've suffered chronic nausea since. Only recently have I decided the nausea is worse. Doc put me on Vistaril 25 x 4. I'm also an anxious person, I told the doc. Does nothing for my nausea, nor does anything to take the edge off. Ten days so far. I'm seeking help elsewhere."

For Sedation "I was prescribed 25 mg and was told to take 1-2, 8 hours before I needed to wake up. I have bipolar disorder and frequently don’t want to/can’t fall asleep. Taking 1 helps reduce nightmares, but doesn’t make me feel drowsy until I wake up in the morning! Taking 2 knocks me out, but again, I wake up feeling disoriented, dizzy, and nauseous. The feeling typically persists for 6-8 hours after I wake up (from sleeping 8 hours). I have a history of sleepwalking, but once I started taking this medicine, I developed a habit of sleep eating. I frequently eat large amounts of food about an hour after falling asleep and rarely remember in the morning. I usually find food wrappers in my bed and the memory starts to come back. I’ve never had this issue until I started taking this med."

For Anxiety "My doctor is taking me off Xanax after being on it for a year. He prescribed me 10 mg of this drug. The worst experience ever. It’s been hours, and I feel nausea, headache, and so dizzy I can’t stand too long. Heart murmurs, heaviness in my chest. Blurred vision so bad I feel cross-eyed. Never taking it ever again!"

For Anxiety "This drug is almost as bad as the condition I'm taking it for. I started taking it, and I've felt so sick ever since: headaches, stomach aches, nausea, and severe fatigue. I can barely get myself out of bed, and on top of that, I always feel restless and shake a lot. One positive thing I can say about this drug is that it has helped my heart palpitations, which is a great thing, but that's really the only benefit I've experienced."

For Anxiety "I took 25 mg of this medication to help with my anxiety and the nausea I was experiencing due to my depression. However, it only made me feel worse and gave me a bad headache. It also worsened my nausea and made me feel extremely groggy throughout the day. I felt weighed down and lacked energy. As someone with epilepsy, I did some research on this medication and found warnings about its potential risks. If you have epilepsy or any other type of brain disorder, I suggest avoiding this medication if possible. I will try to find another doctor and go back to using Valium, which I had no issues with."

For Sedation "I’ve been taking hydroxyzine since I was pregnant for sleep. I’ve been on it for 4 years now. I’d say it works better than nothing, but I’m not certain I’m actually sleeping when I take it. I often think I’m dreaming and realize I’m awake and just “daydreaming.” Despite taking it, I am always tired. If I don’t take it, I get extremely nauseous. Recently, I started noticing I was having memory problems. I would be driving and momentarily not know where I was. I also forget words a lot. I’m 35 years old, so I found this to be concerning. I looked this drug up, and it can cause these kinds of problems long-term. After not taking it for a week, I’m still exhausted. My sleep is pretty poor. However, I’m definitely more motivated and don’t feel the brain fog. I think I’ll just start taking hydroxyzine as needed from here on out."

For Sedation "I took this for the first and last time (hopefully) on July 9 when I was having an Ativan withdrawal. I had constant panic attacks, fits of rage, impulsive violent behavior, and this behavior also happened in the waiting room of the hospital, so they wheeled me back to a room, and I hysterically demanded Ativan, and they told me they didn’t have any (I knew that was a damn lie), so they gave me hydroxyzine. I never took it before, but I was desperate to calm down, so I took it, and within 10 minutes, I was calm, relaxed, and extremely sleepy. The only difference is I was extremely itchy on this, and I complained to my nurse, but she said it stops itching, but it did the opposite for me. It made me even more paranoid and made me nauseous, so eventually, I fell asleep, and when I woke up, I still felt groggy and clumsy. I think I will stick to Ativan and Xanax, never trying new drugs."

For Anxiety "I just recently started sertraline and found it to cause anxiety and nausea when starting up and an increase in symptoms. I was already on 0.5 clonazepam twice daily and have built a tolerance to it, so it wasn't helping. Both my doc and I felt it wasn't a good time to wean off while starting up a new medication until I was on the correct dose and settled. So, I asked for hydroxyzine, which I was previously prescribed by a different doctor. I was prescribed 50 mg 3x a day, but I take it as needed, usually once or twice a day, sometimes not at all. While it doesn't calm like a benzo, it does make you a little tired, which can, in turn, help take the edge off anxiety. It is great for helping with sleep. I do find it has caused me to feel like I need to eat after taking it, and I have gained a bit of weight on it as a result. But other than that, I am happy with it."
