"Had been on Gabapentin 600 mg a day for neuropathy in hand from injury. Had been having hot flashes 12+ times in 24 hours. Read the research and tried doubling my dose to see if it would help. I only had 3 hf over the next 24 hours. Called GYN and her authorized increased dosage to 1200 a day. Still working great a week later. Still have them but not more than 4-5 a day and none at night. Feel much, much better. More energy and hand neuropathy is much better as well."

"This drug helps my post-menopause symptoms tremendously. My hot flashes cause my rosacea symptoms to flare so bad. My face and eyes burn like they are on fire if I don’t take this drug. It’s great for insomnia also! I sleep like a baby. Without it, I toss and turn all night. It also helps my terrible moodiness that comes with my menopause. It is prescribed for my back pain, but it helps so many other things for me along with helping the back pain. The one thing I absolutely hate about this drug is it causes all-over swelling, which is why I keep going off of it. It also causes constipation, but I can take my Linzess or Miralax to counteract that problem. It also causes me to eat enormous amounts of food. It’s almost like it turns off the full receptors in my stomach. But other than these terrible side effects, I still love this drug."

"I have been experiencing hot flashes for about a year now. I was prescribed Gabapentin 300 mg for neck herniation/nerve pain, and I figured out it was also helping with night sweats. It has been a huge help at night, and I have been able to sleep. I recommend giving it a try!!"

"I read on here that this drug is non-narcotic. But it seems to act like a narcotic. I have been on this drug for a few years. I wish I had never seen it. When I run out, I am in very bad shape. I sweat like crazy. I cannot sleep. In so much pain, I can't walk. If you are new to this drug, DO NOT TAKE IT FOR ANY REASON. If you do take it, be very careful with it. It is very addictive. A doctor will tell you it's not addictive. I'm telling you from taking this, it is very ADDICTIVE. BEWARE."

"I have a herniated disc in my back and it's protruding in my spine on my nerve. I was just prescribed Neurontin 300 mg, one in the morning, two at night. I stumbled across this forum while looking up the effects of this drug, and I'm so excited to see if it will help. I'm 10 years post-surgical menopause, and nothing has helped my hot flashes! Fingers crossed! I'll update!"

"For nerve pain, this drug is great if you can live with the weight gain. I had been on 3,600 mg a day for over a year and just recently cut down to 1,200 a day (a few months ago). I also stopped my HRT 6 weeks ago because I was getting migraines from the Premarin, and the estrogen patches quit sticking after using them for 8 years (why???). So here I am, miserable, up all night, sweating like a pig, on fire/freezing, on fire/freezing 4 times an hour, around the clock. Heck, even progesterone doesn't help! Gabapentin doesn't work for everyone for hot flashes, so I'd really think about the side effects before trying it."

"I was prescribed Gabapentin, 300 mg three times daily for menopausal hot flashes as well as general moodiness, as Black Cohosh was not working. Well, 2 weeks later, absolutely no change except for weight gain. After reading some of these reviews, I need to speak to my gyn about possibly increasing the dosage. Not sure if it would make a difference, though (all this while having power surges)."

"For the night sweats/insomnia, I started taking one 300 mg gabapentin in a.m. and one in the evening - still had night sweats, so changed timing to two at 8:00 p.m. Worked great for a couple of months, then gradually, the sweating and insomnia are creeping back. Doctor said to try three gabapentin, one in a.m., one at lunch, and one at dinner - wow, what a bad idea. Had sweats all night (one per hour), so didn’t get any sleep. I’m going to try taking three at 9:00 p.m. tonight. Can’t bear another night of no sleep and sweats! I see a wide range of dosages that women have been taking, so I’m going to go with their suggestions and not my OB/GYN."

"I had to get off Prempro, it was working for my hot flashes, but about $200/month. I couldn't afford it any longer. So, my doctor put me on 100 mg of gabapentin, and it doesn't seem to be doing anything after a few days. After reading these other comments, I'm going to try 200 mg at bedtime. If it doesn't work, I'll try 300 mg before consulting my doctor again. Fingers crossed."

"Was prescribed this for severe menopausal daytime hot flashes. Started at 100 mg once a day, no effect. Twice a day, no effect. Three times a day, and the hot flashes switched off like a light, and I didn’t have even one hot flash for many months. It was AMAZING! Sadly, hot flashes started coming back, and I tried higher doses (300 mg three times a day) without any luck and discontinued. Hot flashes were more frequent, so I’m back on and trying 100 mg four times a day. Was going to ask about a RX for Effexor, but after reading the reviews about withdrawal, I think I’ll stick with this. Going to try a higher dose at night because now I get the night sweats."

"Was on Duavee off and on for a couple of years. All I did was gain weight. Helped with hot flashes, not near as well as gabapentin. My girlfriend told me about it, my doc had never prescribed it for that. It has helped tremendously! And no weight gain. I don't see any side effects. Would highly recommend trying."

"I have taken 1600 mg of gabapentin since 12 years before menopause. It was the medication that completely controls my cervical dystonia. Noticed that I did not have hot flashes post-menopause as my friends complained of, but did finally start to have sleep disturbance. So, after several tries with OTC supplements, non-soy genistein takes care of that. From the first pill, I just don't dare miss taking it. It lets me know. Wish one or the other or both would help everyone."

"I'm a horrible sleeper to begin with, and recently have entered into menopause. As I celebrate the end of monthly menstruals, I wept over the symptoms it was causing, especially those that added to my insomnia, like hot flashes. Before menopause, I was normally cold all the time and slept under 6 blankets. With menopause, I'd wake up hot, like my legs were being baked in an oven! I didn't want to take hormone therapy due to the risks, so I searched for an alternative. GABA popped up all over the internet! I had a full bottle I stopped taking for another issue, so I gave it a try. 300 mg had me sleeping the whole night (minus pee trips)! I even stopped taking 2 other meds for sleep because of it! Anyway, it does make me extremely drowsy, but hopefully menopause won't last long. PS... I'm going to try taking my GABA earlier in the evening to see if that helps with next-day drowsiness."

"I have been taking gabapentin for a few years along with a low dose antidepressant and morphine patches and codeine for back pain and still have terrible hot flashes, so no, it does nothing for me at all. Unless my other meds I am taking as well stop it from working for the hot flushes ☹️"

"Have been on three 100 mg Gabapentin three times a day for stroke prevention for many years. Had a hysterectomy years ago. Right now, hot flashes/goose pimples are driving me crazy. Hot flashes have never really stopped, sometimes as often as every half hour. Also take Atorvastatin 20 mg, Amlodipine 5 mg, Levothyroxine 75 mcg, Aspirin 325 mg, Magnesium 1000 mg once a day. Furosemide 40 mg, Potassium 20 meq, Oxycodone 10-325, all as needed. Cold goose pimples usually accompany hot flashes, lasting about 20 minutes. Terribly uncomfortable, disturb sleep. Would like some good suggestions. Thyroid removed due to cancer four years ago."

"I have been on methadone at 10 mg for many years. In the course of reducing my medication, I began having sweating, especially at night. Gabapentin immediately relieved my discomforts and sweating so that I could continue eliminating the use of methadone for pain."

"I started taking gabapentin 300 mg at bedtime about 3 months ago, and I immediately (as in the very first night) had almost 100% elimination of the hot flashes and sweats that had tormented me for a couple of years up to that point. It worked so well, I almost couldn't believe it. Made the mistake of letting my refills run out last week and didn't take it for a couple of nights, and the hot flashes returned with a vengeance. I was completely miserable, exactly like I was before I started the medication. Got my refill yesterday and slept like a baby last night. If you are suffering with horrible hot flashes and/or night sweats, it's definitely worth a try."

"Does anyone know how long is a safe time frame to be on gabapentin for hot flashes? I have been on gabapentin for 2 years. I was taking as high as 600 mg, once per day. My doctor has suggested I try to lower the dose. I am now down to 300 mg, but my hot flashes and anxiety are back. I am going to have to increase again. My body is definitely not ready to stop taking the medication yet. Has anyone been on it and eventually been able to stop because hot flashes also stopped? Thanks for the help."

"The medication helps immensely with hot flashes, however.... I'm experiencing some extremely serious side effects, depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. I'm only 33, 34 in September. I went through chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, which most likely damaged my ovaries and pushed me into early menopause. The oncologist wants to wait a year post-transplant to start hormone therapy. I get relief from the hot flashes, but is it worth all the emotional and mental rubbish? Any advice on home remedies?"

"Wow, I am so blown away by gabapentin that I searched for a way to review it online. Took it for nerve impingement in my neck, and the very first night I slept well for the first time in 4 months—and the first time I didn’t wake up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat! Last night, second night, same thing. Totally eradicated night sweats."

"I first read about gabapentin in 2002, after I developed unbelievable hot flashes after being put on Tamoxifen when I was premenopausal. One long, uninterrupted meltdown day and night. Sweating through all my clothes, hair always wet, followed by freezing cold spells before the next hot flash kicked in. I was almost suicidal. I begged for the gabapentin, and they finally gave it to me. It's been a godsend. It doesn't eliminate the hot flashes, but it mitigates them, and I take 800 mg every 4 hours round the clock. I have been doing so for 20 years, and I don't seem to have any bad effects from it. If I skip the gabapentin even for a few hours, my hot flashes are back with a vengeance. Surely someone can figure this out, but until they do, I'm sticking with gabapentin."

"Night sweats were reduced immediately, and by 2 weeks, I was not having night sweats or daytime hot flashes. This was on just one 300 mg nighttime dose. The initial sedating effects were excessive, but they were less of a problem after 2 or 3 weeks. I had to cut back on my usual sleeping medication."

"For me, gabapentin has been extremely effective in controlling hot flashes and night sweats. Within a week, my hot flashes had decreased in intensity and frequency to the point where I could actually sleep. I was having three or four severe hot flashes each night and would have to change my clothes due to sweat. When I started gabapentin, I would have one or two a night, but they never went anywhere. I would feel the heat in my hands, with a little bit of a tingle, and then often that was it. It was like the drug stopped the hot flash right in its tracks. I am very thankful that this drug has been so effective for me. I'm about to start hormone suppression medication for breast cancer, and I am hopeful that gabapentin will be able to handle the potentially increased hot flashes, a common side effect, as well. I initially used estrogen to handle hot flashes but then was unable to continue due to the breast cancer tumor being sensitive to estrogen. I only wish I had used it sooner!"
