"It works, but it can be ineffective in some situations. I've used it for over a year, switched from a max of 40 mg to 20 mg twice. It is not effective for me personally to take just one a day, so my doctor prescribed me to take two 20 mg pills of Prozac a day, and this has proven more effective. There are some things Prozac has not fixed with my obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), even with taking 2 pills a day."

"I was on Paxil over 10 years ago, but ended up gaining a lot of weight on it, even with working out like a madman and watching what I eat very meticulously. After being on several meds in the next 10 years, which did not appear to work (although I wasn't on them for a long period of time), I decided to try Prozac from the advice of my psychiatrist, who is a very good doctor. I took a gene test to see what medicine would be best for me, and the tests revealed that Prozac would be best. I started off on 20mg, increased to 40mg, and eventually went up to 60mg (due to my OCD). At first, I kept the weight off and, in fact, was losing a bit of weight. However, after being on 60mg for a long period of time, I decided to weigh myself and was totally dismayed and went into a deep depression over how much weight I gained. I always thought weight gain was one thing under my control, as I work out and watch what I eat. To say it mildly, it was like a punch in the stomach."

"As Lanie, the poster below me stated, Prozac also seemed to only make me worse. I'm sure it has genuinely worked for many people, otherwise, it wouldn't have such a high average rating, but I know for a fact it only contributed to my symptoms (paranoia, impulses, unwanted thoughts) rather than relieved them. I cut it cold turkey back in college and suffered a few more years without meds before finding some relief with Celexa, but Prozac was definitely not a pleasant experience for me."

"I've been on Prozac 60 mg for 10 years. The drug is miraculous, it got me out of a hole. But as I suffer from OCD, I decided to self-medicate with drink and drugs, also, that led me to a 12-step fellowship! Now, 7 and a half years without a drink or drug, I'm self-medicating on Prozac, which is not very good! It got to last Friday, I had taken probably 4 tablets in 2 weeks and just crashed! I'm now back on 60 mg a day but having bouts of anxiety again and thinking it's not real. I'm hoping this is just the side effects of the Prozac again getting in the system. I'm tired, headache, and anxiety thinking."

"I have been taking Prozac for over 6 and a half weeks now and can say that the first week was really difficult for me as I was having an increase in anxiety and intrusive thoughts. It just felt so incredibly debilitating. I can say around the 3 week mark my panic attacks weren’t happening anymore, and I felt a decrease in my anxiety levels, and by week 4 I wasn’t needing to take as much rest from the overwhelm of anxiety. By week 5 I could feel moments of clarity and regaining hope, and now on week 6 I can say I don’t notice my OCD thought loops as much and I don’t have that sense of dread rushing through my body like I did before, and I can say I feel like it’s just going to feel better and better as the weeks go on. If you have OCD please be patient with this medication because it takes a while but it’s worth the wait and everybody deserves some support to get better!"

"Forgot to add to my other review. The generic equivalent of Prozac did absolutely nothing for me, either for my OCD or my depression. I needed the brand name for it to work. So if you’re not having an effect, ask your doctor to write 'brand name only.' You better have great insurance, though, because it’s thousands of dollars."

"It was okay, but I didn't really like the feeling. I took 20 mg for a week and then I quit. I felt like I couldn't think as deeply, which I guess could be good for those with OCD, but I just felt off and would rather feel normal instead of on medication. It felt like someone filled my head with oatmeal, and I had to think around the oatmeal. I slept less, and the sleep itself felt artificial. I did have a few interesting moments on it, but overall I wouldn't recommend it, and I don't see how people can take this drug for long periods of time. My face even looked different. It was just a strange experience overall. I'm glad to be off it."

"I started having really strong suicidal thoughts. I saw a psychiatrist, and he diagnosed me with OCD and said there's no depression inside me. I doubt it. He started me on Prozac and Risperdal. I struggled for 1 year long. I decided to change the doctor. He said not to leave Prozac and to add one other medicine called Effexor. I finally found out that only the brand Prodep, Olimelt, and Lamez (brand names of Prozac, Zyprexa, and Lamictal in Nepal) work best with each other. No other brands can be used. I am now currently on 150 mg Effexor XR (Australian brand), Prodep 20 mg (2 capsules, Nepalese brand), Olimelt 5 mg (Nepalese brand), and Lamez 100 mg (Nepalese brand), and I am living a life. So if you are suffering from any mental health issues, just go to Nepal and ask a psychiatrist to take Prodep 20 mg capsule, Olimelt 5 mg tablet, and Lamez 100 mg tablet (remember Lamez 50 mg tablet doesn't work well with this combo, so just 100 mg tablet) doesn't matter whatever dose you are on. Good luck!!"

"I took this medication for 2 months for body dysmorphic disorder, and my breasts grew three cup sizes. I can’t exercise or fit into my old clothes, and I have back and neck pain. It has exacerbated my BDD. I am so afraid I am going to get breast cancer now. It is extremely disturbing, and I am terrified. I have been off it for over a year, and they have not gone down. This was not listed in the literature, and there was no indication of permanent side effects. If this starts happening to you while taking this medication, please be aware that you could be stuck with it for life. I wish I knew, or I would have stopped it immediately."

"I tried this medication for a week and had a horrible experience. I didn't sleep for two days and completely lost my appetite. I did not eat anything and lost three pounds. I was already skinny to begin with. So, if you want to be malnourished and sleep-deprived and feel like a crack addict, this is the medication for you. It does help with anxiety, however."

"After 2 weeks, this crap called medication made my OCD worse. Then a few weeks later, I was so depressed that I couldn't even get out of bed. I went from being a healthy lady with moderate OCD to a majorly depressed obese pig in 2 months. Thanks, Prozac. Don't put this depression-causing pill down your throat. Talk to your doctor about other options. Also, I just want to let you all know something: 50% of psychiatrists will do anything to make their appointment with you quicker, even if that includes just opening their book of medications and picking a random one in your category (in my case, OCD). Always try medication-free solutions before popping a pill, e.g., OCD training, therapy, natural treatments, etc."

"I have been on Prozac now for a while as I suffer from OCD and PTSD also. I feel as if it has made me crazier, if that's possible. Some days I can't stop twitching, feel full of energy and experience nausea. Other days my bones hurt, I feel not fully awake and just odd. Keeping in mind that daily, I have high levels of caffeine and smoke marijuana. And not daily, but weekly, I drink quite a bit of alcohol. I have noticed alcohol and Prozac really don't mix. But nevertheless, I am still taking 20 mg daily (which I do not think is enough) but then some days I want to stop taking it altogether? I do not, although Prozac doses shouldn't be skipped, but evidently the only words I can use to describe this drug are odd and weird and idk???! uugh."
