"I have been taking doxycycline for years, it treats a wide variety of infections. However, I was taking it for acne, which works very well for me. I learned over the years of taking this medication to make sure to eat prior to taking it because it will cause nausea and light-headedness. Women need to be especially careful while on doxycycline because it can also cause yeast infections."

"I am taking this medication for sinusitis and bronchitis. It works, but the side effects for me are horrible. Very nauseous, although I take it with food, and generalized body aches. I feel dizzy occasionally. I dread taking this med!"

Doxycycline "This is my last day of the 10-day course for a sinus infection, and I am taking it to a lab to get it analyzed. Something must be illegal with this drug that it is prescribed so easily without specific instructions. I have been sick all week. Sinusitis and the effects of this drug have kept me in bed most of the week. I got ill on a weekend and had to go to one of those 'clinics.' Next time, I will go to the E.R. I lost an entire week of my life. i.e., shoulder/neck pain, sore throat, 'something in my eye,' dryness, light-headedness, lethargy, loss of appetite, dry nose, restless sleep, yet sleep all day, nausea, feeling bloated, some diarrhea, and feeling mentally disconnected. I was not a happy camper. And now, on the 10th day, I still have an infection, yellow mucus."

"I didn’t think it was even working for my sinusitis because I had basically no side effects, but the infection cleared very quickly. I had just switched because of a terrible Augmentin reaction, but this was a cakewalk. Teeth sensitivity and a little bit of gastric pain if I didn’t take it with food. Sunburns my skin and a very minor headache. I’ve been taking probiotics daily, but other than that, I’m very happy with the results."

"I’m floored to see so many negative comments about doxycycline!! After two (miserable!) rounds of another antibiotic, I was prescribed this for severe sinus infection. Within two days, I was feeling better!! I was recently prescribed this drug (100 mg 2X per day for 14 days) for a staph infection on my ankle. I took the first couple of doses on an empty stomach and felt a little queasy, so I started taking it with a small snack, and the problem was solved! More importantly, the infection on my ankle has responded unbelievably to this drug! I will ALWAYS request this medication for my severe infections because the slight nausea is a small price to pay for its bacteria-killing abilities!!!"

"I have taken doxy before and was fine both then and now. I was taking it for a sinus and lung infection. I have no complaints as long as I stick to the instructions. ALWAYS drink a whole glass of water (250 ml +) with the dose. Avoid dairy foods and avoid anything high in metals, iron, magnesium, zinc, etc. DON'T lie down for at least 20 minutes after. No side effects."

"This drug doxycycline hasn’t worked very well for my sinus infection. The side effects have been really hard, like intense nausea if you don’t take it very soon after eating. It also causes sensitivity to sunlight, including itchy, itchy arms and feeling temperature sensitivity in the shower. It’s the weirdest side effects I’ve ever had from a drug before."

"I've been suffering from sinus infection for a long time. After taking amoxicillin for 7 days without improvement, the doctor gave me doxycycline, and the symptoms started disappearing after 3 hours of taking the first dose of two tablets. I have taken doxycycline before and never had any side effects."

"I have taken doxycycline numerous times for an infection that never wants to go away (ureaplasma). It's been a year since I've had it. I went to the doctor last week and got put back on doxy. After a day, I started getting a burning sensation around my eyes and sensitivity to light. Then, the next day, the mother of all headaches came, it was like a sinus pressure that went into my eyes. I had to stop taking it due to the headache. If anyone knows what the headache was caused by, please let me know."

"I had sinusitis for a week, then went to doctors with a severe headache, pressure on forehead. I told them I have a bacterial infection, headaches, weakness, feeling lethargic. Had one tablet yesterday with a sandwich, one this morning with breakfast. Seems to be fast-acting, as my nose is now clear again, no sign of infection, no pressure or pain. I believe this is the best antibiotic I have ever taken, feeling great today. With food, I also drank 200 mls of water. I believe everyone is different, I seem fine and can tolerate doxycycline medication just fine, no more pressure headaches... yippee!"

"Have been taking doxycycline for a week now, and the side effects are really killing me, such that I am feeling I have a serious infection. The reason I was prescribed it was for the risk of STIs - though the doctor didn't know the infection exactly. Just made assumptions when I explained how I was feeling after having unprotected sex. I feel headache, muscle pain, nausea, back pains, too much chest pain, joint pains, insomnia, and feeling generally sick. Now wondering should I continue taking or stop immediately?"

"I was only able to take it for 4 days before I had to be taken off of it because I couldn't see anything clearly. It was affecting my job and my home life. I felt like I was going crazy. Couldn't remember anything. Had to ask other people what I was doing because I couldn't remember."

"This antibiotic was great! I was terrified of taking it at first because I had read all the negative reviews, lol. I had a painful boil under my armpit that had caused me to have a fever and chills, and my doctor had prescribed me 100 mg twice a day. The first day taking it, my boil had popped on its own, and then from there it started to heal tremendously. One thing I do recommend is taking this medication with food and a glass of water each time. I had no side effects at all!"

"I had a sinus/ear issue for some time now, worse at times. This last time, the Z-pack did not help, along with amoxicillin. Sinus always returned until the doctor prescribed doxycycline, which took about 5 days to get going - prescription for 10 days. The side effects for me were some chest pain and some anxiety, taking into account I developed ulcer pain/problems. The chest pain decreased after a week or so. Will stick it out 10 days, hope the sinus/ear infections don't come back."

"My doctor prescribed this medication after an HSG test (a test used to evaluate female fertility). It was prescribed for 7 days, I'm on day 6 and getting worse every day. All my muscles and body ache, I can't even stand still for a long time, real bad headaches, tachycardia, sore throat, nasal congestion, fever, loss of appetite. I think I will stop using it because I'm feeling worse every day."

"I've been taking doxy on and off for the last 6 years for cystic/nodular acne and for a sinus infection when needed. Every time I have an infection, I request this antibiotic. I've never developed a tolerance/resistance to this drug. I'm allergic to penicillin, I don't take fluoroquinolones because of the possible dangerous side effects, and the cephalosporin family makes me sick, so doxy is a lifesaver for me. My face was covered by painful cysts, now it's 100% clear, and every time I have a flare, doxy is on it. Now I take my doxy pill with food and 2 glasses of water and avoid sitting or laying down because I got esophageal irritation from it before. Everyone's body is different, and everyone reacts differently to meds, but for me, this med is a lifesaver since I'm so restricted on which antibiotics my body can tolerate."

"I took this for 7 days. On day 6, I woke up to swollen eyes, puffy eyelids, and uncomfortable pressure in my head. It’s been one week off them now, and I still have the pressure in my head. My head feels really off...not right. I also had a bad reaction to the sun (rash). I got tingling in my face as well. I’ve taken many antibiotics, and this has been the worst by far. :("

"Not even sure that I needed an antibiotic, but took it on GP’s advice. This medication is awful. Horrendous stomach cramps, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, and diarrhoea to name but a few. Seven days after stopping, and I’m still suffering with some effects. Had to take time off work. Would not recommend anyone take this medication."

Doxycycline "Have been taking this med now for the past 8 days for an acute sinusitis infection and paid strict attention to the pharmacist's instructions. YOU MUST DRINK A FULL GLASS OF WATER after you've taken it. Don't disregard these rules, or you will have severe side effects. Otherwise, I'm hoping this time doxy will clear it up as I was on amoxy, and that didn't. This infection keeps repeating because of two bouts of pneumonia, and I'm sure residual infection wasn't properly cleared up then. This time I'm hoping with 10 days of the Doxy it will be so far so good, BUT PAY ATTENTION TO THE FOOD AND DRINK ON THIS MED."

"I took this medication in the past for pneumonia. Felt a little bit nauseous, but it was tolerable. Took it two times a day. One hour before a meal or two hours after a meal. Didn't feel sick on day 3. I have a bad sinus infection now. Doc thought since it worked well for me before, I should take it again. This time it has been different. I completed my dose yesterday, but I haven't seen any change. I still have most of the symptoms, plus woke up with a stiff neck. I noticed a few people here developed the stiff neck. Is that a side effect?"

"My 'Dry Eye' problem (lack of oil in my eyelid oil glands, used to stop the eye's tears from drying out) has now turned into a raging bacterial eye infection and spread to my sinuses. Doctor started me on doxycycline 20 mg twice daily but no improvement after 3 days; he then upped the dosage to 50 mg twice daily several days ago, and the inflammation in my bloodshot eyes and sinuses, major congestion, starting to get slowly better. Not wanting to compromise potency, I eat no food, etc. for 2 hours before and after pills. I'm drinking 2-4 glasses of water with pills, and that has alleviated earlier nausea. I'm pleased so far, but only halfway to recovery."

"On the 3rd day of taking doxycycline, relief already in my sinuses. No side effects as yet. Take with a full glass of water and eat straight afterward. (This is important because if it gets stuck in your throat/esophagus, it will burn and cause an ulcer - if you eat afterwards, you know it has been pushed all the way down.)"

"Cured gum infection, but also changed my digestion for the better, changed it like I was 18 again, go figure. No side effects I have experienced. I drink beer as usual, no problem there that I can tell. If you have some bad bacteria in you, this stuff will kill it. The digestion effect was the most unexpected thing, don't know what it did, but it did - no pain, bloat, nothing, what can I say. I really forgot about any sort of digestive issues I was having. I can eat anything, and it does not bother me."

"I wanted to share my daughter's experience with this medication as a warning to others. Please do follow the instructions regarding drinking a full glass of water with this Rx and not lying down for at least 30 minutes. My teenage daughter woke up in the night and realized she'd forgotten her evening dose, so took it, then went back to sleep. Later that night, she woke up with severe pain in her throat, and after several trips to doctors, she was diagnosed by an ENT with basically a throat ulcer caused by the medication burning a hole in her esophagus. This was very painful, and she could not eat normally for a week."

"I took two pills. The second pill seemed to have been stuck in my chest about three hours after I took it. I had heartburn like I had never, ever had before. Then started nausea and vomiting for about 24 hours. Went to the ER, they said my esophagus was swollen and inflamed and gave me meds. Two days later, went to a digestive doctor, he said that pill is common for this. It has caused people to go through the same thing. It has been almost a week, with two visits to the ER and now an appointment set up to see an esophagus specialist. I am finally getting better. Hopefully this nightmare will be over soon. Just be cautious, this has been a bad experience for me."
