Bupropion for Major Depressive Disorder "I’ve suffered from pretty severe major depressive disorder and anxiety since I can remember, diagnosed since I was 18 (now 25). Tried Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, Lexapro, and none really helped me escape the deep hurt I felt 24/7. About 16 months ago, I started taking this drug, building up to 300 mg XL over a 2-week time span. That was a pretty horrific time if I’m being honest - manic, crawling out of my own skin, couldn’t sleep at all. But then my doctor added 100 mg of Seroquel at night for my sleep. Over the next 3 months, I felt myself lift out of the darkness a little. She also added an anti-anxiety (Klonopin). Wellbutrin didn’t solve my depression, but it definitely did help save my life. If you’re just trying it out for the first time, try to get past the bad side effects in the beginning if you can. It’s been worth it for me anyways. Long-term side effects have been anxiety, reduced appetite, memory loss, restlessness, nausea, and some confusion/disorientation."

For Anxiety "I started taking Wellbutrin 2 months ago. I do not suffer from depression, I have generalized anxiety and panic disorder. It is definitely very helpful for the generalized anxiety, as I am not feeling anxious 24/7. But the longer I take it, the more I experience unpleasant side effects. Out of any antidepressant I have tried, it is the only one that does not affect my sex drive, which is a plus. But I have a very difficult time falling asleep, even with the addition of sleep medication, I get constipated frequently, it makes me nauseous and dizzy, my muscles ache even though I work out regularly, I am itchy all the time, my appetite is irregular, I'm moody, and I still have panic attacks."

Bupropion for Depression "I've been taking Wellbutrin for about 1 month. I really want this medication to work, but I'm having all side effects. Started with a bad taste in my mouth and went to headache, really dizzy, and nauseous. (I will go off if this doesn't go away.) Today I'm having some chest pain, but it feels a little worse than the anxiety chest pain I was having, so I'm not sure what to think of that. I have been on Prozac and then Celexa for 10 years, and I wanted to try this for the less sexual side effects. That has worked, and I feel more sensitive to the things that should make you cry. I really want this to work, but the side effects are hard. I'll stick with it and hope they go away soon."

Bupropion for Smoking Cessation "I was prescribed Zyban by my physician to aid in quitting smoking. I was super excited to get it because I would finally get the help I needed to kick the habit for good. I read some awesome reviews and was confident this would be it. I was instructed to take one a day for the first few days and then begin taking one twice a day. I felt okay at first, but once I started taking two a day, I began to experience side effects. Headaches, waking up feeling hungover, extreme nausea, confusion and fogginess, muscle tenderness, and definite weakness... almost as if my brain was telling me I couldn't move if I tried, and I became literally too lazy to try. I was super disappointed, it just wasn't for me."

For Weight Loss (Obesity/Overweight) "Has anyone else experienced nausea? I am taking 150 mg, have been for weeks with no weight loss at all, but I also have no appetite. But the nausea is getting me down, and I'm afraid to up my dose because of it. Anyone else?"

Bupropion for Depression "I took Wellbutrin 150 mg once a day, alongside Zoloft (200 mg) and Atenolol (50 mg). The Wellbutrin worked well for the first four days, but then I suddenly began to plummet. Instead of feeling energized like everyone else in these reviews, I began to feel restless, drowsy, and dizzy. Even worse, I noticed my blood pressure was going up. By the third week of taking this medication, my head was pulsing, I had a couple of bad headaches, diarrhea, and nausea. I could not take the side effects anymore because I was experiencing almost every negative side effect. If you are sensitive to caffeine, this drug may not be for you. It felt similar to caffeine, which I am sensitive to."

Bupropion for Depression "I’m female, 62, and have been on 150 mg/day for over two years; I quit smoking after 40 years and quit taking this - that was a mistake!! I’ve always had some depression but didn’t take anything for it (except that I tried sertraline for a few months though.) Anyway, once I got off of it, I started smoking again for a month, then threw them down and got back on the Wellbutrin; that was 16 months ago. The only side effects I’ve noticed are that my cholesterol levels are going up, but I am trying to control that by my diet. I don’t like taking pills, but this one is the only one I take besides vitamins. It helped me quit smoking (when Chantix made me nauseous), so two thumbs up!!"

Bupropion for Depression "Once I started this medicine, I would be woken up by my stomach pains. This medicine made me queasy and sick for hours on end. This is a little TMI, but it gave me terrible diarrhea ALL DAY LONG. I had little to no appetite, which was kinda exciting but not when I literally needed food in my stomach to calm the pain. Did not make my depression any better; honestly, it worsened my anxiety and made me much less social. All I can say is - I will be going back to my good ole Cymbalta!"

Bupropion for Depression "Love this medication for my anxiety/ADHD/depression! I take 75 mg a day, and it has helped me focus and push through the 3 pm slump. I sleep well and feel much calmer. It’s helped with my depression as well. I had nausea the first few weeks, and it made me very sleepy, but those wore off. No other side effects to note. Haven’t lost any weight or noticed a change in appetite like most say. It did stop my IBS-D. Wish I had tried it sooner!"

Bupropion for Major Depressive Disorder "150 mg x2 Bupropion SR. An excellent but dangerous drug. Side effects: seizures, nausea, appetite loss, hearing damage, increased libido, increased energy, aggression or agitation. A strange medication, you lose cravings for everything but sex. No desire to eat, smoke, drink, or use street drugs. However, at therapeutic levels, it can cause seizures. The medication works great otherwise, I just needed to increase my anti-epileptic drug (AED). Wellbutrin acts very stimulating, so piggybacking a sedating antidepressant or anti-anxiety med is usually a good idea. Personally, I use doxepin and (as needed) Valium. It balances out Wellbutrin nicely. For the first few years, I had constant stomach pains from the medication even when taken before bed. The stomach pains went away immediately with the SR. There are studies showing Wellbutrin causing damage to hearing after decades of use. I noticed the ringing in my ears went away (after 20 years or so), but my hearing was now worse."

Bupropion for Major Depressive Disorder "I had a great experience the first three months. It helped keep me up during the day, which was nice. Did nothing for my sex drive, but that was zero when I started. Then it was like a switch flipped, after the third month (at 300 mg), I was suddenly back to sleeping 14 hours a day, had nausea all the time, and when I was up, I was having awful panic attacks. And oh my god, the irritability, I was going to hurt someone or myself. I've had bad reactions to most pills, but that was a pretty big disappointment because I did feel great for three months. My psych handled it poorly and wanted me to wait two more months for an appointment, so I quit cold turkey. And while that was stupid and I don't recommend doing that without the help of a medical professional, I experienced no withdrawal symptoms. I will say I feel better now than I did before starting Wellbutrin, probably due to diet improvements and establishing an exercise routine."

For Anxiety "Was prescribed the generic for Wellbutrin, and the first day I felt great. But when I woke up the next morning and went to school, I was dizzy, nauseous, and anxious. I had to go home early, and it felt like I had zero energy. Barely left my bed. I took it again, and symptoms didn't seem to ease up. Now on day 3, I have been throwing up and weak. I didn't feel like I had depression before, just anxiety. Now I have symptoms of both. The pharmacy told me to stop taking it."

Bupropion for Depression "Wellbutrin is the only antidepressant that has worked for me. I've tried 7 other kinds, and all made me worse. Wellbutrin's initial side effects were mild, mainly headache and nausea. But I noticed I was happier and more worry-free after a few weeks. I have to admit that this medicine made my appetite worse. I know it's sometimes prescribed to help with obesity, but it made me gain weight. If you are a smoker, be careful because it will make you sick if you smoke, which is why I was able to quit smoking."

Bupropion for Depression "Been on this for two weeks now, started taking half of a 75 mg pill, and two days ago increased to taking a whole one. Am supposed to take the whole for 2 weeks, but am thinking of stopping at a half. A whole pill is making me really nauseous and also gives me really bad 'jitters,' like when you've had too much coffee. Had absolutely NO side effects when only taking a half."

For ADHD "As for what it was supposed to do, it was stellar. I felt more alert, I slept better, my executive dysfunction had improved significantly. I unfortunately experienced side effects so bad that I had to stop it urgently. Over time, the simple thought of food could make me gag constantly for 5-10 minutes. Almost completely stopped eating. I was a little underweight already, kind of borderline, I got *severely* underweight within a month and a half. Do not recommend if you don't have any weight to spare. Most importantly though, I had extremely high blood pressure. I didn't know that's what it was until it became so bad I couldn't function. I felt the blood rush through my brain and felt very faint. Couldn't think. As time went on, I would try to speak and words just wouldn't come out. Paired with a heart rate of 170 bpm at rest, it was a nightmare. It worked well and apparently my reaction is not too common, so I would still recommend!"

Bupropion for Depression "Have been taking 300 mg for 3 weeks now. I had horrible side effects in the beginning (for about a week) - almost unbearable nausea, diarrhea, sweating, vertigo, headaches, confusion, and I felt like I had the flu. Now I have migraine headaches that last almost all day and ringing in my ears. I still feel a little foggy sometimes, but that is a small price to pay for my depression being pretty much completely gone. I finally have energy, and I am shocked at how quickly it worked. I was suicidal for months while on 225 mg of Effexor, and this has been a lifesaver."

Bupropion for Depression "I rated it a 5 because I felt for me it was 50/50. Tomorrow will have been only my 5th day taking the generic version (bupropion SR), but I am making today the last one. I was prescribed only 150 mg once a day. The first 3 times I took it, it worked wonderfully. I experienced a handful of side effects that were super mild, but I felt great. I felt energized and positive. Today, on the other hand, about two hours after I took my dose, I was hunched over the toilet, almost throwing up with bad stomach pain in addition to the nausea. I never threw up. I have ZERO appetite and no energy and a bad sharp pain in my upper stomach. I feel totally disconnected from my body."

Bupropion for Depression "I was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety, as well as a bit of OCD regarding my weight well over 10 years ago, but started taking medication for it only 2 years ago. I'm on Wellbutrin again, after a year or so off of it, for about 6 days now, and I haven't felt much of a positive change whatsoever, unfortunately. The one side effect I've been getting is extreme migraines. I suffer from chronic migraines anyway, but they're never usually this bad every day. I'm not sure if it's because I'm still coming off of the Zoloft while starting up the Wellbutrin. Zoloft gave me awful headaches and major weight gain along with some insomnia. I'm sticking it out and hoping that the migraines go away. I have been nauseous daily also."

Bupropion for Major Depressive Disorder "Recently I switched from Lexapro to Wellbutrin XL due to what seemed to be decreased efficacy. I have never been so miserable in my life! After 2 weeks I was feeling dizzy and had vertigo, which my doctor said should subside. The good news is that it did. The bad news is I started feeling tingling and numbness in my hands and feet. This feeling did not go away. I also experienced nausea, vomiting, severe agitation, and general malaise. After 5 weeks of being on Wellbutrin, I called my doctor and told her my symptoms. She has put me on Effexor, but I can't start the medication till my symptoms go away, which I hope will be soon because I think my family has about had it with me this last month. I hope Effexor helps and soon! Take care, everyone!"

Bupropion for Major Depressive Disorder "I was on 150 mg Wellbutrin for depression. The first few months had no side effects besides very mild nausea (which is a miracle for me). Then they increased my dose to 300 mg once a day, and the side effects really started taking their toll on me. I had night terrors that would leave me awake for multiple hours each night when I would finally come out of it. The nausea was making me vomit from the smell of any food. I was really upset because it was really helping as far as my depression goes, but the night terrors were too much for me to handle. Only sleeping 1-3 hours at night isn't worth it to me."

For Smoking Cessation "I was a 12-a-day smoker for about 20 years. I'm on the third week of taking this medicine, and I've cut down to 2 cigs a day. I like the energy it gives me, but the food cravings are wild, although I have not gained weight. The first couple of days, I felt nausea. The constipation is not great, but I've been taking fiber supplements. I don't feel my usual happy, spunky self, though. I want to completely stop smoking and get off these meds soon. Cross my fingers!"

For ADHD "I initially got put on this medication for anxiety and ADHD after taking Concerta (that did wonders) for my ADHD. Focus has gone nowhere. My anxiety got slightly better, but I also just transferred to a HBCU and quit my job, so these things could have easily contributed to me being less anxious. Hyperactivity continues to give me racing thoughts and shaking my leg in class. After taking this medication for a week, side effects never lessened. I’ve experienced lightheadedness and extreme nausea. I felt the effects after taking the first pill, and I can’t explain it any other way than it made me feel very weird. This feeling keeps occurring after taking it, and I’ve only become more irrational and frustrated that I feel like I’m being used as a science experiment and not actually getting what works best for me and my body."

Bupropion for Depression "Though I was having a heart attack. Chest pain lightly started 2 weeks in. Sunday, pretty good pain, but I went to work 1/2 day. Came home and laid down. Pretty bad pain, got up and walked it off. 2 am, the pain woke me up and thinking it was a heart attack, I grabbed aspirin. Pain worsened and radiated whole chest. Sweating and nausea. All the signs of a heart attack. EMS transported, waited 10 hours for blood enzyme test, it was normal. I had read that chest pain was a side effect. I asked the ER nurse, and apparently she knew it was pretty common."

Bupropion for Major Depressive Disorder "I have been taking this medication for about 2 weeks now. I got prescribed it in the hospital after a fallout. I tried Prozac while in high school and had no luck with it. Then was prescribed Zoloft a few months ago and obviously didn't work, considering landing myself in the hospital. Now trying Wellbutrin. Even though I have just started it, I'd say that I do see some positive effects in it. I have more motivation and am trying to do better for myself. But I do have some side effects including really bad headaches, ringing in ears, insomnia, dizziness at times, with nausea. I also have noticed that taking Excedrin to suppress the headaches doesn't help but makes my anxiety increase. Don't take a dose late either as that just increases mood swings."
