"I was given this medicine for an ear infection and a slight cough. I feel like I'm going to cough up a lung. I'm hacking and choking to death all day. I just quit my job because I keep urinating all over myself from coughing so hard. The doctor said these pills will help with my cough. But the pills made my cough worse. I'm about to go check myself into the hospital. I need to be on a breathing machine. I have chest pains too. I have an inhaler I never used until now. But I've been trying to find anything that will help me breathe normally. And my inhaler is helping me. I took 1 tablet every 12 hours for 10 days. These pills didn't help me."

"This medicine made me feel sleepless, restless, jittery, racy, and like I was going to lose my mind within a few hours after my first dose. I called my doc, and he told me I could stop it, and he called in plain amoxicillin instead. I had none of these symptoms with that. I've been on it a few days now. It seems to be the clavulanic acid that I am sensitive to. I would suggest calling your doc and telling him to call in a different drug to the pharmacy immediately if you feel mentally 'off' from it. I do not suggest continuing to take this if you feel mentally 'off' from taking it. I had also taken this a few years ago and forgot I had the same reaction."

"I was prescribed this med to prevent an infection after I stepped on a very ugly nail. Also got a tetanus shot. I've now been taking it for 5 days and have two more to go. The side effects so far have been loose stools almost every morning, skin flush that went away with one 50 mg Benadryl, and energy! My usual aches and pains have decreased, and the energy is great! I wonder if I actually had/have an underlying condition that this antibiotic is working on. Who knows."

"I was prescribed Amoxiclav twice, both times it was 875/125 pills twice daily for 10 days. It helped with symptoms of infection both times. But the second time, I had very bad side effects: dizziness, loss of focus, heart palpitations, derealization. I even hallucinated a couple of times. Not sure what went wrong. Clavulanate can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and do stuff inside. But the first time, I was fine."

"Took 3 pills every 12 hrs. for 2 kidney staph infections. 1st pill taken with food and low-fat plain Greek yogurt. Later began to notice a throat and tongue burning sensation. 2nd pill caused stomach discomfort and diarrhea (consistency of pudding). 3rd pill began to see red blood after wiping. Very painful and bloody anal area after passing mushy diarrhea."

"Well, I was given a steroid shot, and this prescription: it made everything worse! I had dizziness, back, neck, and shoulder pain, slight nausea, diarrhea, red cheeks, made my face feel sore, barely slept through the night, and I stopped after 3 days. This is one medicine I cannot take again!"

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "As advised by the doctor, take with probiotics - took one pill at 8:30 (1/2) apart, then around 11:00 started throwing up for over an hour, then got diarrhea - guess I didn't have enough food on my stomach - will not complete the dosage."

"Chest cold with post-nasal drip for 3 weeks. Been on meds for 4 out of 10 days, 875 mg horse pills. Pros: no sinus pressure, cough lessened, voice back, no chest rattling, and can sleep through the night. Cons: HUGE pill, slow to resolve coughing. Side effects: gas cramps followed by diarrhea in the beginning (but tolerable, like various foods or excess protein does), makes me feel even more drained, frequent urination, mild lower cramps. Method: one mid-morning after a meal but with food and water. No dairy. One late evening after supper with bread and water. I think the key for me is a solid meal prior with no dairy, and bread helps. I think if it dissolves before the food, then that's where the gastric issues and nausea come from."

"I was given this medicine for a nasty cough I couldn't get rid of caused by a bacterial infection, plus I had an enlarged tonsil. It helped with the swelling, but the side effects were something else. It does the job, but I definitely could have done without the diarrhea and yeast infection."

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "Within a few hours of taking my first dose, I felt like garbage. I was extremely nauseous and out of it, almost dizzy. I have a deadly fear of puking, so I stopped taking it right after the first dose. I would never take this again because of the awful side effects. If you deal with nausea and diarrhea well, then you should stick to it, but personally, I could not put myself through it any longer."

"I was prescribed it for a sinus infection but I'd gone to the doctor for a UTI. He dismissed the UTI for lack of any positive test results. This medication cleared up both after 8 days. I also felt well for the first time in years. I had energy, no joint pain, and my urethritis was completely gone. Now, three months later, the symptoms have slowly returned - except for the sinus infection - but having no positive test results for bacteria, I can't get any more of this. They need better tests!"

"Had a nasty infection in an old root canal that had spread into my sinus. Yes, I've had a headache for the past 4 days. Yes, I generally feel like rubbish, BUT, it is kicking out of an advanced infection, so I'll take that over settling for something that may or may not work. Suck it up."

"This medicine was given to me for a bacterial infection that I had from an abscess on my butt. It did help rid the infection, but I had almost every possible side effect that comes with this medicine. I had a loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting whenever I would try to eat or right after and whenever I would attempt to take another pill. I also had crazy thoughts or hallucinations, not sure what was going on. I couldn't sleep, couldn't stand for longer than a few seconds without getting dizzy. I almost passed out in the shower every day. I had really bad fevers that would go back and forth all day. I could go on, but I'll be here all day. I was told to stop taking it once I developed a bad diaper rash. It works, but it may not be worth all the side effects."

"After just taking 2 pills, I had diarrhea. After being on the toilet every 10 minutes or less, I went to Walgreens and stocked up on Imodium with gas relief, Gatorade, and ginger ale. My stomach has never made such loud awful noises, bloating, pain, severe gas, severe diarrhea. I’m so miserable. I’ve taken amoxicillin many, many times but never with clavulanate potassium. I now have 8 Imodium + anti-gas in 2 days in me, and I’m STILL having diarrhea, bloating-even in my sleep! Like I didn’t take anything to stop these symptoms. I’m so sore! Tucks actually burn. I haven’t taken the antibiotic since yesterday. Should I go to the hospital? It can’t be a good thing being dehydrated and soon will be nothing but bile... I have no idea if the drug is clearing my infection. I can’t take it."

"It is now week 3 since I stopped that poison, and I'm still paying a price. I was prescribed it for a bacterial upper respiratory infection. After the first day, I started having a fast and pounding heart rate. My fatigue got much worse, and my blood pressure went way up (though I didn't know the latter had occurred until I took myself to a walk-in clinic on the 5th day, when I stopped that poison.) Since then, I still have the pounding heart rate throughout the day, and especially at bedtime, which keeps me awake. It's like my adrenaline is always sky-high now. I am forced to take taurine three times a day to control it somewhat. Will this ever end???"

"I never had a problem with regular Amox 875. I asked the doc to prescribe regular Amox for a recent upper respiratory, instead, I got this 'enhanced' version. What a mistake. Every cough resulted in stress incontinence, including severe, explosive diarrhea. My overall symptoms got worse-asthmatic bronchitis with a wet cough developed. This went on for 2 1/2 days until I read the side effects and read the caution to IMMEDIATELY stop the med if severe diarrhea due to potential GI problem it can trigger. Never again will I take this med."

"Woke up 4 days ago in pain, lymph node under impacted wisdom tooth was swollen, tongue, gums, and throat were infected, could swallow and it was hard to eat. I've been taking this for 3 days now and feel a lot better, can't vomit if you're not eating anything, aha. Feel fine, mixing it with Panadeine Forte and ibuprofen and still got a dull toothache but not the throbbing of my neck, jaw, and temple anymore at least."

"I was prescribed the generic brand (Amox-Clav) for Augmentin 500 MG for an abscess and was told to take 3 times a day with food. I may have had 1 day that I took all 3 dosages, most days I do take my morning dose, and some I take it twice. The first week on this, I was going #2 about 5 or 6 times a day, talking about draining you. I haven’t felt myself since I’ve been on this medication. I’m tired, I eat, but I’m scared to because of having to go to the bathroom. It’s caused me to have a slight panic attack, grouchy at times, and for the last couple of days, I’ve got something weird going on with my stomach, some discomfort and pain."

"I'm currently on amox/clav unchewable tablets for a bacterial infection (intestinal) H. pylori suspected. I'm asthmatic and allergic to whatever creature finds its way into my house. Nightly post-nasal drip, into the stomach, and into the gut, and you have a roadmap for bacteria to find a home. I have never had a reaction to this particular combination, which is classified as a wide-spectrum drug for a variety of bacteria. Drinking lots of water when you first take them, mornings were best for me. I avoid dairy products during breakfast. It doesn't take long for amox/clav to do its work. You'll see a difference in 4-5 days, but do not stop regardless until the full 2 weeks have completed, we've all heard what happens when you do. Call your doctor/nurse immediately if you have any reactions."

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "I have 3 days left of Augmentin for a sinus infection. I have had a mild headache and stomach cramps since taking this medicine. I forgot to take a pill at dinner and instead took it before bed. I couldn't get to sleep since I became very stuffy to the point that I couldn't breathe out of my nose. I started to feel heavy in my chest, so I had to get up to get my breathing under control. I didn't realize that others have had similar side effects. I will call my doctor and see if she recommends I finish the medicine. No Augmentin for me next time."

"I took this for a sinusitis/bronchitis infection, and it started clearing up after the second day. The only appreciable symptom I've noticed is the diarrhea, which I will be talking to the NP about today."

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "It has been widely accepted that stopping antibiotic treatment early encourages bacteria to develop antibiotic resistance. That is why you should immediately consult with your doctor if you stop taking it. Amoxicillin only didn't give me much side effects. Just started taking Co-Amoxiclav for bowel inflammation. Hopefully, will work too. Will see. Take care, everybody."

"I took the medication for a sinusitis infection twice a day as directed by my doctor. On the morning of the fourth day, I woke up to vomiting and diarrhea. Over the next day and a half, I continued to vomit and run to the bathroom for diarrhea about once every hour or two... Pure hell. The worst part about it was the nausea... kind of like a bad trip where I was constantly very, very stressed out. It has now been six days, and the nausea has not completely gone away. It is very scary how antibiotics can affect us physically and mentally. My doctor did prescribe a medication for the nausea that I take every eight hours, and that does help a lot."

"Have ear infection, which was not cleared by the amoxicillin, which had no side effects. But problem returned. Dr said to use the Augmentin. Chemist gave me the generic brand Alphaclav Duo. Took first (and only) tablet with lunch, and about 4 hours later the vomiting started. It must be the clavulanic acid that is the issue, as the amoxicillin was OK. Called Dr, who said to stop taking it. I just hope the vomiting stops soon, as I feel awful."

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "I was prescribed Augmentin for a dental infection/tooth abscess. When I went to the dentist, I had already been on 3 or 4 days of penicillin. The penicillin didn't seem to be clearing the infection, and the dentist couldn't get me in for a root canal for another week. There, Augmentin came into play. The first dose I took on an empty stomach (couldn't eat with my throbbing face). So I had some nausea and just figured it was normal. The next dose I took with food, as directed. I puked viciously. I took another dose or two and had similar results... so much nausea and vomiting, it was hard to appreciate the fact my face wasn't throbbing. So it works well on infections, hard on the stomach though."
