Amoxicillin / clavulanate "After a 10-day dosage, I developed severe diarrhea with bloody stools. (C. diff) Went to ER and was diagnosed with C. diff. Have been ill ever since and am now lactose intolerant. Took metronidazole for 14 days but still have symptoms. Horrible experience."

"Nasty multiple cat bites, so urgent care gave me this. 6 hr later, suddenly vomited all over with no notice. After 2 days, only 4 pills, now anything I eat running straight through me within 30 mins. Absolutely horrible and been off that medicine 2 days and still happening even after 4 Imodium in the last 24 hrs. Does anyone know how to stop this? So severe I can't go to work as I don't even have a minute to run to the bathroom. I will NEVER EVER take this medicine again even if I'm dying!"

"I have taken this for four days. On day two, I noticed I was extremely agitated. I suspected the antibiotic but didn't look into it. Day three was worse. I began to have thoughts of suicide and hateful thoughts I had never thought before. Today, I stopped taking it after Googling the side effects. Interestingly enough, I didn't have diarrhea or cramping but did have nausea."

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "I took Augmentin for 3 days and developed severe tachycardia. My heart rate even went to 180, where I had to end up going to the emergency room. Left there with orders not to take Augmentin and was given prescriptions for Ativan (my resting heart rate was 130) and clindamycin."

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "Occult infection (possibly prostatitis per urinalysis) causing me to experience severe feverless rigors (principally composed of intermittent, fast onset, violent full-body shaking, ice-cold hands, and blue fingernails) that last 15 to 60 minutes per episode. I'm on day eight (500 MG 2x/day) of a thirty-day prescription of Augmentin. I am experiencing abdominal pain, abdominal spasms, esophageal spasms, hypertension, tachycardia, and irregular heartbeats (PVCs) as side effects. My blood glucose level is also elevated since starting Augmentin. I am desperately trying to tolerate the side effects, but I fear that I'm fighting a losing battle. Don't know where I go from here since I'm allergic to most antibiotics. After eight days (15 doses) on Augmentin, no relief from rigors yet. I am a 69-year-old male, 6'0 tall, 170 lbs. in generally good health. I routinely walk 30 to 40 miles a week for exercise."

"Day two of seven. Prescribed this medicine for a sinus infection. Seemed to help relieve the pressure in my face, jaw, and ear that was extremely painful prior to starting the treatment. I have noticed that after taking each pill, I get extreme chills and my body feels like I have flu-like symptoms. Not a really good trade-off, honestly."

"I believe you guys are taking the medicine without food on your stomach or not enough. I haven't had one of the side effects you guys named. I'm on my seventh day. I'm feeling fine. I'm taking it for an ear infection, haven't had a flare-up since."

"I took this medicine for a sinus infection, and within my second pill, I had nonstop red diarrhea. So severe that I have had cuts from wiping so much. I had a severe cough, and I would leak poop when I cough. And my cough has not gotten any better, and it gave me a yeast infection."

"Taking Amox-Clav 875-125 mg, 2x/day, for sinus and lung infection. Doctor said to take with food and a probiotic or yogurt. I take a probiotic (25 billion CFU capsules), eat a meal, and then take the antibiotic. So far, no side effects. I've taken four full days (8 doses) of it and woke up this morning (day five) feeling like most of my symptoms have subsided. My head cleared up right away, but it took four days for my cough/cough spasm to improve. It's still there, but it's much better. I gave it an 8 score because it is taking its sweet time clearing the lungs."

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "This has been a terrible experience. Given 875 mg for 7 days for diverticulitis. Side effects are extremely tired, anxiety, complete loss of appetite, bloating, and full of gas, extreme weakness in legs, feel like passing out. Worse than the problem it was for. One more day left and feel like passing on it. Hopefully, I will bounce back after it is out of the system. Unless you can lay around and not have to function, I would not take. Could barely take a shower, was so tired. In my opinion, bad stuff."

"I had empyema morning (infection around the lungs). This worked out perfect for me. I went into the hospital for 29 days and had amoxicillin with clavulanate through an IV and then took it orally for 6 weeks after! I can honestly say I didn't really get any side effects from it unless I was just too sick to realize. I was on metronidazole for 1 week before, and that was terrible, it would make me so tired I almost collapsed every time I took it. Then I was put onto the co-amoxiclav. I did get night shivers and sweat, also a headache, but I did quit smoking at the time of going into the hospital, so I would probably say that's why I had those problems. I wish you all well and wouldn't ever say no to this drug, you would be privileged to get it prescribed!"

"Within an hour of taking one pill, I was in so much pain. My stomach had me balled up into the fetal position, then severe diarrhea and vomiting began! If one pill can cause so much havoc, I'd hate to see what a second one will do (I will never use this med again). This was hands down one of the worst and most painful nights of my life! My present state is laying on the bathroom floor."

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "Took Augmentin for a bacterial infection. The infection cleared up, but the day I took my last dose, I broke out in severe hives. I was out of town, so did not see my doctor. Took Benadryl every 6 hours for 4 days before the hives subsided. The hives covered everywhere from my face to my feet. Although it cleared up my infection, I would not want to face that side effect again. Never had any allergies to antibiotics before."

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "Taking this for an unknown bacterial infection - confirmed with CBC, but I personally suspect it's early onset of appendicitis. I'm on a pretty high dose according to my doc (500 mg 3x daily), and oh man. The brain fog is maybe the worst symptom. It starts in about an hour after taking it and settles in for a few hours. It just feels hard to focus on anything, like my vision is blurred almost. Between that and the insomnia, nausea if I eat food anytime between doses, and diarrhea, what a fun medication!! Loss of appetite too I've noticed. I think it's increased my anxiety too, but I'm a bit of a hypochondriac to begin with, so I don't know, my anxiety might be increased just because this drug is whacky. I'm on this thing for 10 days. Today is day 3. Noticed an improvement in my infection symptoms I think? Much less abdominal pain, but it's hard to get a good gauge on that when you're having diarrhea so much!!"

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "Got a very deep cat bite and ended up getting a bad infection up my whole arm. I left the hospital and was in the emergency room the next day because after 2 doses and 24 hours it was actually spreading. After 48 hours, the swelling finally started to go down, which I was happy about, but I started getting severe side effects as well. Constant feeling of vomiting, complete loss of appetite, and slight to severe confusion. (Poured chips out of the bag onto the counter thinking I had a bowl out. And calling things by the wrong name constantly.)"

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "I was prescribed Augmentin for a severe infection at the root of the tooth (I don't even see dental abscess listed as an indication for use here, but the dentist seemed enthused). I was in absolute agony, and the infection had to be cleared up before the tooth could be pulled. Well, first came the sticker shock! I couldn't believe my prescription was over $30 for a generic version, but figured this had to be good stuff. Two days later, no improvement, but explosive watery diarrhea every couple of hours despite probiotics. Having been a caregiver, I recognized a C. diff infection. Sure enough, Googling confirmed that Augmentin is notorious for inducing this! I knew this wouldn't be tolerable for the remainder of the course of treatment, plus it can lead to colitis, so I begged to be switched to a 'plain' antibiotic. After a day on that, I already feel so much better, and thank goodness the C. diff seems to be resolving on its own. The $2 price tag for amoxicillin was nice, too!"

"Was on amoxicillin/clavulanate after getting my wisdom teeth out as a preventative measure. I had to stop after 4 days because I got pretty severe diarrhea. That was a pretty big mistake (and why you should ALWAYS finish your antibiotics, no matter what!) because I got an infection. So I had to go on it AGAIN, and for longer than I would have had to take it previously (7 vs. 14 days). This time, in order to prevent diarrhea, I took probiotics religiously to replace my decimated gut flora. Thankfully, that was enough to stave it off for the duration of treatment. All in all, I would definitely recommend going on a probiotic while using this medication, as it helped me immensely."

"Ended itching from toe infection, but gave me a headache, loss of appetite, foot cramps, anxiety, and sleeplessness. I learned to take it with food and drink water and expect sleep disruptions, but my toe seems better."

"I was diagnosed with a bacterial infection after having a cold and cough for a month. I visited my doctor after having a continuous severe headache that reached down into my neck and problems with my vision. Within a few hours to 36 hours of taking this medicine, I started having trouble breathing, tightness in my chest, coughing, rhinorrhea, higher heart rate, restlessness, and nervousness. I took a total of six pills before I decided I could not deal with the side effects anymore. I should have stopped and contacted my doctor when I noticed the first side effect."

"Currently taking this for bronchitis/early pneumonia. Had diarrhea, but it got better after a day or two. The med is definitely doing its job in killing all the garbage in my body associated with the infection. Normally I have great energy, this is my 7th day of the med, and I feel as though I am exhausted constantly, feel like I’m wrapped in a warm, soaked, heavy blanket that I’m dragging around with me. It’s a side effect, I’ll continue to tough it out. It’s better than when I was sick and coughing constantly, lungs and chest so sore and red I was miserable. It’s killing bad bacteria in your body, your body is then getting rid of it with sweat and normal bathroom functions, so to be a bit off or frequency increase to me is a good thing. The tiredness thing gets to you, but don’t just go off the med and have the bacteria come back in some super form. Call your doc, try and tough it out, don’t just stop taking."

"I took this medication because I have an ear infection and a swollen gland that's causing a sore throat. These pills are HUGE. I took two pills yesterday 12 hours apart and went to bed at 8 PM. I woke up 3 hours later and started vomiting... a lot. After I had calmed down a bit, I went to lay down... and I had to run back to the bathroom to vomit again. I kept feeling sick, but I had nothing left, and the second time there was blood. Not worth it at all."

"Dr. prescribed this antibiotic for tonsil infection for my 17-year-old son. After 2 rounds of 500 mg, the infection did not clear... so far no side effects. After this, the doc ordered 10 more days of the same, and two days later, my son had severe diarrhea with blood in it. He was weak, and we stopped immediately. The excess of this antibiotic caused a stomach infection that needs to be treated with a different antibiotic. Horrible side effects. I recommend getting another AB if all possible. It did not work for us."

"I was in the throes of a cold when I touched my ear and it hurt. Went to an urgent care facility where I was prescribed this combo antibiotic, amoxicillin with clavulanate (strength 825/125). I read all the reviews and was taken aback by the side effects people experienced. Frankly, a bit scared. The first night (dose 2), I slept very hard but woke up a couple of times because I was extremely hot. I had a fever. The next day, I was still pretty sick. I am on day three and recovering well. No side effects. I am a bit tired and did experience muscle aches yesterday, but they are gone today. Since I was so sick with the cold, it’s hard to say what was the cold and what was the drug. I am happily now on the upswing, feeling much better."

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "I've given Augmentin a low rating not because it is ineffective as an antibiotic, but because the side effects have been awful for me. I received a nasty dog bite with a deep puncture and was put on Augmentin as a precaution to prevent infection. I wish I had just taken the risk. I took 2 pills daily for 10 days. About 4 days in, I developed severe diarrhea that lasted 4 days straight. I took probiotic supplements and Imodium, which helped only a little. After the period of diarrhea, I became constipated for a few days, and then the diarrhea returned. Currently, it's been 9 days since I finished my last pill, and the cycle of bowel distress has not cleared up. I'm continuing to take probiotics and I'm hoping my stomach will calm down before too long, but it's been an awful couple of weeks, and I regret my decision to take the Augmentin preemptively. On the plus side, the bite wound healed just fine with no infection, so that's something."

Amoxicillin / clavulanate "I started Augmentin 1 gm twice/day 5 days ago (Wed. Sep. 9th) to treat inflammation in the tooth root. The stomach problems started by day 4. Today (day 5) was really bad: headache, stomach pain, pain in my joints, and my whole body. I also had a loose stool from day 1. I called my doctor, explained the situation, and he said I can stop taking it, a minimum of 4 days should suffice. So I took 9 out of a course of 14 tablets. I hope I'll get rid of my whole-body pain and stomach problems soon. So overall experience with Augmentin: bad."
