"Amitriptyline prescribed for serious spine problems which resulted in very painful nerves. 30 mcg nightly and it worked like a dream, much reduced pain and terrific sleep. After 6 months, it had no effect on sleeping, developed RLS, possibly connected, but it really helped during early months, and side effects were bearable. I'm now down to 15 mcg nightly"

"I started taking 10 mg amitriptyline at night in September 2021 for peripheral neuropathy. I've just weaned myself off them a week ago, January 2022. I was having terrible night sweats and palpitations, dizziness, bunged-up nose, dry mouth. The pain is back, but I no longer feel like I'm going to drop dead."

"I took one 10 mg amitriptyline to treat central pain syndrome, which is severe, constant nerve pain resulting from a damaged nervous system (caused by Lyme disease). When I woke up the next day, my face, hands, and ankles were so swollen, making the pain even worse. I am miserable. Called my neurologist after one dose and told him absolutely not. I had the same problem with Lyrica, and I’m so desperate for relief I don’t know what to do. Despite my poor health, I am generally in good spirits or at least calm, but amitriptyline made me feel agitated, and I hate feeling like that without having any reason to feel that way. I will never touch this medicine again."

"Gained 46 lbs and began to have myoclonic jerks while taking this. It helped for headaches but not much for other pains. It also put me to sleep every night. When I had to stop, I had really bad withdrawals. Now I don't know how to go to sleep either."

"I've been taking amitriptyline for a few years now to manage headaches caused by Chiari Malformation. This medication has restored my life to almost normal. When I started the medication, I was experiencing approximately 25 Chiari headaches daily. With continued use of this medication, I now have Chiari headaches once a month or less. I don't want to consider what my life would be like without this life-changing medication."

"I've taken this for chronic pain, sleep, and intractable migraine prophylaxis since 1984. Otherwise, MD was going to place me in a medically induced coma for deadly insomnia (only 1-2 hours of sleep daily for months). Came off twice unsuccessfully and nearly miscarried fetus 3 times. It is a wonder drug that has helped immensely for decades at a very small dose."

"I had chronic headaches as well as depression and anxiety. 10 mg of amitriptyline has stopped all headaches, and I generally am in a better mood. I'm not sure whether it is actually helping my depression chemically, or reducing headaches to put me in a better mood, overall, it’s definitely helped."

"Had trigeminal neuralgia 16 days after shingles on right side of face. Took amitriptyline 25 mg for 8 weeks. My scalp pain 6/10 was instantly gone on the first night, but facial pain 4/10 persists till today since July 2020. I'm using heat compress only for relief now."

"Varies in time for effect on sleeping. Moderate nerve pain relief noticed the following day, if you haven't fallen out of bed in the night. I will normally take 50 mg per night, but not every night, as I don't like waking up on the floor. For sleeping, it can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to work. So, no late meals. Caused me to nod off at work the following morning DURING calls. I'd wake up and be talking to a new patient! No one seemed to notice, luckily, as phone lines were quite bad. And I always requested late shifts anyway, due to meds. But I do mind about falling out of bed. But then I mind about sciatic pain, it sucks."

"After a motorcycle accident, I have had neck pain and headaches for 15 years. Went on Endep, and most of the pain has subsided, so Doc was right about nerve pain. I would like to increase from 20 mg to see if I can touch my bad moods."

"I was given amitriptyline for sciatic pain, along with 30 mg codeine. Both helped with the pain and with sleeping, once the most severe acute sciatica had eased a bit. After about 6 weeks on 20 mg a day, I woke up a couple of times with my heart rate loud in my ears and resting pulse of 90 bpm, way above what it should be. This appears to be a common side effect and one I wasn’t happy with. 4 weeks after my last dose of amitriptyline and codeine, I fall asleep okay, but wake up within an hour and cannot get back into a restful sleep. I’d be cautious about taking this stuff and wish I hadn’t started."
