For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I'm 25, and I've always had cold sores in my mouth since I was 4, and it can happen with sun or eating citrus. It's only getting worse now that I have braces, so my orthodontist told me about this pill and my doctor gave it to me, and I love it, EXCEPT I get a headache, fatigue, dizziness, and joint pain... but it's totally worth it!"

Acyclovir for Herpes Simplex, Suppression "I have had a cold sore outbreak 1-2 times a year for the last 15 years, usually during summer months (lower lip). I had previously tried medicated lip applicators with little success. A friend suggested Zovirax. I use it now at the first sign of tingling or hardness in the lip. When I catch it early, the severity of the outbreak has been greatly diminished. I only use it for 2 days, and the sore has usually healed in about 10 days to 2 weeks."

For Cold Sores "My experience is that I have had cold sores ONLY on my lips from age 6 to 35. I agreed to a 1st date... bam! I felt it. That is the key; take meds once 1st felt. I have no medical knowledge except I know what my body tolerates and what has been successful, which may not be your best bet, but be safe, careful, and consult your doctor before any treatment plan. 1. Break up your pills in half for immediate absorption; take 800 mg every 2 hours to slam your system to alert it there's an issue and send in a 2nd round of 800 within the 1st 4 hours. 2. Continue 800 for 2 days every 4 hours. 3. Apply Abreva or a similar product on the sore at first sensation, while taking the meds, so you are attacking the infection from inside (meds) and externally (cream on sore) for 4 days."

For Herpes Simplex, Suppression "I take 400 mg twice a day of this medication, and it cleared me up in less than 3 days. It’s important to drink plenty of water right when you take this. I only had side effects in the first two doses, which for me was being agitated and sleepy, but it was mild. I haven’t felt that way since my first two doses. I’m happy with the results."

For Herpes Zoster "I took Acyclovir because of shingles. I had to take 800 mg 5x a day for 7 days. On the first day, I was okay, second day, I felt dizzy and a little nauseous, third day, I had severe nausea, which was horrible. Other symptoms included feeling spaced out, stomach cramping, headache, and sweating when I was asleep. It’s better to finish the course, which I managed to do-thank God! However, it did clear my rash away."

For Herpes Zoster "So far, after one pill and 34 more to go (5 a day), it feels like the needles are still stabbing me in the upper back. I'm 46, and I had my first outbreak of shingles when I was 17. I had the full-blown blisters and all - knives were the feeling then. The doc just changed my script from Famvir to this Acyclovir. I hope it will work the same. Mine are 800 mg, 5 times a day, and they gave me three refills. They don't know what to do with me."

For Cold Sores "I use this drug for the occasional cold sore that I get on and/or around my mouth. I live in Mexico and found this drug over the counter. Super sad to hear the cream costs $200!! Here a 5g tube and 50 tabs of 400 mg tablets cost me a whopping $7 USD. I have a few different tubes, so I can have it available if I ever feel a tingle. And since it’s so cheap, if I see even a stranger with a cold sore, I offer it to them. It is a miracle worker for me. If I am fortunate enough to catch it in time to take a pill, it rarely goes to a full blister. And if it does, it is contained to a very slight bump. For me, it also relieves any discomfort."

For Herpes Zoster "I had an outbreak, and I let it go for 3 days. I came to know that it is shingles. My clinic diagnosis confirmed. I was advised to take acyclovir for a period of 10 days (400 mg) five times a day. Even though the blisters were out, I am getting that shooting pain 4 to 5 times a day, a burning sensation, and as if I am attacked with 1,000 sharp needles at one time, and this pain in my skin frustrates me for the last 8 days."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "This is the only thing that works for my stress-induced breakouts (college). I use both the pills and the cream. I believe when I first started using acyclovir, it was more effective, and now it can take a good 4-5 days to fully heal. This is nothing in comparison to a cold sore that lasted a month without the meds, though! 400 mg. Free with my healthcare for the pills, the cream was $25."

For Herpes Zoster "I had herpes zoster in April 2017, was prescribed acyclovir 400 mg x2 with anti-allergic tabs for seven days and was cured, although aftereffects were felt for long. Interestingly, I also got rid of another medical condition that had been bothering me for more than a year prior to the herpes attack. After one year, symptoms of an old problem (not herpes) developed again. I told the doctor about the effect acyclovir tabs had on it a year ago. But the doctor laughed away my observations and prescribed other medicines. When I didn't get relief even after my third visit to her, she reluctantly prescribed acyclovir tabs. I was completely cured after eight days. Before going public with full details, I would like to share it with the manufacturers of acyclovir tabs. They may like to initiate some more research on this wonderful drug and arrive at a definitive conclusion vis-a-vis my observations. I may offer myself for clinical trials, if necessary."

For Cold Sores "I felt a fever blister (cold sore) coming on, so I began 400 mg of acyclovir 3 times a day. After the second day, I experienced a headache that was very uncomfortable. My early cold sore did not progress into an unsightly and painful sore. I am treating the headache with 500 mg Tylenol once a day."

For Herpes Zoster "The acyclovir from Camber Drug Co. and shaped like a stop sign don't work very well. The last ones I had from another company worked just fine. But now I feel like I'm on the start of a big flare. Been taking this stop sign-shaped pill for 3 weeks. It fails to do what it should do."

For Herpes Simplex, Mucocutaneous/Immunocompromised Host "My daughter is 5 years old and has a primary immunodeficiency (natural killer cell deficiency). When she takes this medicine for the treatment of her HSV (oral), her chronic HSV is less severe, and although new ones do form, they fade away very quickly, and at some points, her face is clear. She has taken it for as long as 5 weeks at a time and will begin taking prophylactic doses of this medication (long term) by next month. We (my husband and I) believe that her initial outbreak of HSV was caused by the Varicella vaccine. Later blood tests revealed her immunodeficiency."

For Cold Sores "I started getting cold sores about 6 years ago after drinking out of a glass at work (that clearly hadn’t been washed properly). I get cold sores really bad, they are huge and make my lips swell. I have used every type of product on the market, but it would take 3 weeks for them to go, and it would leave a scar. I finally contacted my doctor after being fed up with getting them every few months. The doctor gave me a repeat prescription of Acyclovir to be taken on the onset of a cold sore 5 times a day for 5 days. Within one day, my cold sore starts healing, without that painful bleeding stage. It’s so effective and really helps to reduce the impact on my life it previously had! Would highly recommend to anyone who struggles with large and frequent cold sores!"

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I was prescribed this medication, and it did work. Years later, I'm still battling with this virus. I never gave it to anyone. Anytime I feel discomfort, I call my doctor to send a script to the pharmacy. I have had an outbreak on different parts of my vagina and by my anus and mouth. The ones that come by my vulva or anus are the worst, especially when I urinate. I always have that cup of water to pour while I urinate so it wouldn't burn. I'm having an outbreak now. I've been feeling this itch and painful feeling that got me up. I took a pill about 30 minutes ago. I can honestly tell you I'm feeling the medication kick in. My pill is 500 mg. I try to keep some on hand for times like this. My doctor is close."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "About 5 days ago, I realized a cut, I thought I had cut myself while shaving. It then got very uncomfortable and burned while I urinated. Finally, I took my camera down there and wanted to look. I noticed a few more cuts that looked like canker sores, so I made an appointment right away. She told me it looked like genital herpes. She gave me the cream and the pills. It's only been a day, and it doesn't feel like it's working. I know it's soon, but I still feel like I'm on fire, I'm itchy, and it still burns like crazy. Is there anything else I can do?"

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I've been diagnosed with this about 2, maybe 3 weeks ago. My boyfriend gave it to me, I found out when he had a breakout. The night before we had sex, we both went to the ER to find out what's wrong. I have not had a breakout, was on the 5 pills a day thing, but my body couldn't handle it, so the doctor put me on the pill I time a day. Idk what's going on, but now I can't pee. I've been trying to pee for 14 hours. It feels like I have to go, then when I sit on the toilet, nothing but a few drops come out."

For Cold Sores "Tried this for CS outbreak. I'll keep it simple and to the point. Pros: - Works a lot better than any OTC (throw that junk out, waste of $) - Cheap... compared to other drugs - Fast acting... even if caught later, will still work - Can stop/reduce symptoms - Convenient vs. any cream - Side effects nothing like Famvir. Cons: - Not as good as Famvir (holy grail to knockout cold sores) - It appears you need to double the dose to really get an effect - Maybe slight headache - You need to take a lot, it's not just 3 pills and done... - No advancement in this drug, and it's been around for how long?? - Did get a second outbreak while taking... but cleared up quick."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "For the last year, I've been plagued with severe cold sore/herpes outbreaks around my lips, chin, and nose. A never-ending cycle of breakout, heal, breakout. After one day of using the cream and Acyclovir, the large bump on the side of my lip flattened to the point of not noticing it. Day six and I haven't seen my face look this clear in years. One little teeny whitehead popped up last night below my lip, but you can't tell it's a herpes sore. It kind of seemed like a final whimper. If I could rate prior breakouts as a 10 for worst-case scenario, this little guy would be a 1. And I'd even thank someone for it. One last thing, if you're insured, look around for community health centers, call them, and ask for a low-cost pharmacy to fill your prescription. I've read online that the same Zovirax cream prescription goes for $200, and Acyclovir anywhere from $80-200. I paid $100 for both. Do some research!"

For Herpes Simplex, Suppression "I've had fever blisters since I was a child. When I was a teenager, I got fever blisters a lot. As I got older, usually just in the summer. About 4 years ago, I was getting them every other month. Dr. put me on 400 mg twice daily. Have not had any in the last year and a half. What a difference it's made in my life!"

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "When using oral and cream at onset, gets rid of them fast. But remember, this oral stuff is really bad on the liver. If outbreaks are like a few times a year, not to worry. If down in Mexico, can get for a fraction of the cost compared to in the States."

For Cold Sores "Summary - If you get a cold sore, use Valacyclovir and Xerese ASAP and don't stop until it is gone! Details - My nose (area between the two nostrils) started getting red Tuesday morning. I just put Neosporin on it Tuesday night. I woke up Wed realizing it was a cold sore issue. I was out of town and didn't have the cold sore meds with me. I got Valacyclovir filled and immediately started taking 2 pills in the AM and PM. I then got Acyclovir cream filled (as Xerese was not available). I used that cream almost every two hours. It is very good, but not as optimal as Xerese. I kept taking both drugs all day Wed and Thursday, even though for Valacyclovir you can stop after 1 day. I didn't want to chance it. I got home late Thursday from traveling and swapped out Acyclovir for Xerese. Results - AMAZING! All I had was a very tiny scar on Friday afternoon."

For Herpes Simplex, Suppression "I was diagnosed with herpes 5 years ago, and my first outbreak was terrible. I could barely walk and cried the whole night in pain. I've been on acyclovir for about 4 years straight, as I was having outbreaks every single month. Sometimes, twice a month for an entire year. For the last 4 years, I think I've only had two small outbreaks. I'm not coming off this medication anytime soon, that's for sure! Although I'm still praying for a cure!"

For Cold Sores "I started taking it for a cold sore. It helped the cold sore, but it also started making me very depressed, it was like it was working against my antidepressant. It was horrible. I didn't know it at the time. I stopped taking it, and I'm starting to feel okay again. I had no idea it could do this."

Acyclovir for Cold Sores "I took it to the pharmacy, and I was told it was going to be $400. I called my dermatologist, and they told me to use the rebate card, and it should be $35. I went back to the pharmacy, and sure enough, after I insisted what the cost should be, I got two tablets for $35. I have not had a cold sore in six months, which is unusual because I usually get one every 2 to 3 months."
