For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I'm 74 years old. First diagnosed 40 years ago, so I've been using Zovirax and acyclovir cream for a while. Both have been effective in eliminating or reducing outbreaks, especially if applied at the very first signs of an oncoming event. I haven't had a cold sore in that time because I apply the cream when I feel any tingling or raised skin surface. Very little cream is needed to be effective, but several applications a day work best."

For Herpes Zoster "Discovered I had shingles after reading the Google medical journal, lol. Started with mysterious left leg flu-like feeling and excruciating burning pain almost to tears on my left butt cheek. Then bumps on my butt. Decided to take monolaurin (dietary supplement) 3-3 times a day for 2 days instead of going to the doctor. I had no pain and the rash was going away. I caved and went to the doctor to get a prescription for an antiviral so I wouldn’t get post-neuralgia. After taking for 2 days, I now realize it’s messing with my head. It’s making me feel hopeless and no interest. I am going to discontinue and hope for the best. I will continue with monolaurin as I think it helped stave off additional outbreaks."

For Herpes Simplex, Suppression "Acyclovir is a godsend-twice a day and the little bugger never shows up. Don’t stress so much about it. There are people today who’ve been diagnosed with far worse things other than what is effectively a cold sore on your privates. It won’t stop you from doing anything, and as for sex, if you make it a rule to just tell anyone, ‘by the way, I have the herpes virus,’ you’ll usually find it changes nothing, and often they’ll tell you they have it too. Be safe, everyone."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I had a rash on my hand that my doctor thought (misdiagnosed) was shingles. I was prescribed acyclovir, and I had a severe allergic reaction. It turns out it was dyshidrosis (pompholyx) blisters on my hands from stress. Chickenpox/shingles are viral, you do not need to take anything except pain medication. I suffered with hives all over my body the size of dinner plates, it felt like I was being burned alive. I was throwing up, lost weight, and my skin/face began to show signs of jaundice. I thought I might be fatal at one point, my skin began to thin to the point I was seeing the coloration of muscle underneath. I still have scars from it. I had these terrible hives for three months until I was given a steroid shot and montelukast. It was a terrible allergic reaction, and this medication is known to cause Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), Google it because it is terrifying. The hives were gone in 24 hours after getting the steroid shot. Do not take this medication, you could get SJS, which can be the end of your life or ruin your life."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "Unfortunately, my ex-boyfriend intentionally and knowingly gave me herpes. The first breakout was horrible, I had to go to the emergency room. They prescribed me acyclovir 400 mg 4x daily. It definitely works, and it works fast. I had no side effects at all. I always keep it on me, and I am to take 200 mg 5x daily if I start to have another breakout."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "Diagnosed with HSV2 11 years ago. Never received information on tablets I could take. Searched for a natural remedy. An active gym enthusiast and going through the stresses in life, I had outbreaks nearly every other month that lasted weeks. Tea tree oil stung like anything; L-Lysine sometimes worked, but I'd have to take 6000mg+ every day, which made me tired. Hot baths did nothing either. Smoking and drinking definitely assisted in causing outbreaks. I cut these two out as it had health benefits being in my mid-30s. Exercise of any sort resulted in outbreaks. Manscaping would cause outbreaks too. Depression was getting worse; I had no sex life and I needed to be me. Not a fan of prescribed medicine and avoided the doctor's being 'manly,' but I thought, what the heck, after seeing reviews on this site, and it's saved my life. 10+ years of depression gone in an instant! 400mg once or twice per day. A lot of people have HSV2, and it could be worse. Stay positive! Time to catch up for lost time."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "Two days ago, I found out I have genital herpes. This is the second day I've been taking Acyclovir. It's been working good so far. The stinging while urinating has gone away, but not so much. I still have cold sores, but hope that Acyclovir gets rid of them. I'm praying that this works."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I was diagnosed with herpes this year after getting it from my partner. I had a fairly bad first outbreak on my inner labia and just presumed it to be from shaving, but I went to a sexual health clinic and got diagnosed. This medicine has been so helpful. Anytime I have a tingling/throbbing sensation, I take it, and it works wonders. I’m currently taking it at the moment, and the only real side effect I have is having a headache!"

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I have been on this pill now for three days after suffering an attack for almost a week. I am feeling much better. The tingling and itching have reduced. Anti-itch medicated cream from the 99-cent store really helped with the itching. I am just a little tired and feel a little achy. I will take that any time than the feeling of this painful virus."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "Acyclovir 800 mg tab 4 times a day for 5 days. The first pill stopped the cold sore in its tracks, it immediately stopped growing with just the first pill. On the second day, the tingling phase stopped, they erupted, and by the end of the 2nd day, they were drying out. I had to stop at the end of day 2 due to this medicine being too strong for my stomach. I ended up with a gastritis flare-up, terrible stomach pain, diarrhea, and nausea. If it weren't for that, this medicine would get 10/10!"

For Cold Sores "I've never struggled with cold sores as much as I did the past week. I started with one, and it went away with Abreva, but then the next morning I woke up with another one. It was so painful, the Abreva didn't work, and any household remedies I tried failed. It got to the point where I couldn't take it anymore. I went to the doctor and got the acyclovir ointment (and I did take the pills as well just because the level of pain I had was horrible and to make sure it wouldn't spread), but the ointment does work very well. I put it on 4-6 times a day, got the ointment, and the pain went away, and it started to scab the next day. I 100% recommend this!"

For Herpes Zoster "I have been taking acyclovir 800 mg 5 times per day for 8 days for shingles (2 days more to go). I had a headache and nausea for the first couple of days taking this. The headache went away, but I still feel nauseated most of the time. I am also lightheaded, and the dizziness increases when I walk around at all. I feel very fatigued. Sometimes I have felt really agitated, like I wanted to crawl out of my skin. It has caused frequent bowel movements and some diarrhea. Between the shingles pain and the side effects, I am nearly housebound. I've been sick for a month (the rash didn't appear for 3 weeks). I'm at the end of my rope and cannot wait to get off this drug. I had shingles 8 months ago and couldn't tolerate the valacyclovir then - now that it's returned, my doctor insists I must take this to get the virus out of my system. I pray that it works. I am 64 and small build (110 pounds). I do tend to be sensitive to drug side effects."

Acyclovir for Herpes Simplex (HSV) "Been on Zovirax for 15 years. It barely worked when I started using it for genital outbreaks, absolutely does not work now. Three prescriptions of 800 mg x 3 times per day have not slowed down or even put a dent in a 4-month-long outbreak."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "In my 70's now, thanks to my ex-wife who gave me herpes 10 years ago, I have to take acyclovir every day for the past 10 years. If I don't, I will have a breakout if I skip a day. I am more fortunate than others. I get my sores on my lower back only. The outbreaks are rare but are brought on by stress. Wish there was an alternative, but none have been proven to work."

Acyclovir for Cold Sores "This medication is kind of cool. A tablet that can stick on your gums? My only complaint is that it takes a LONG time to dissolve-over 12 hours. If you've ever had braces, it's nothing, but just annoying, especially when you try to eat, brush your teeth, or drink water. I'd recommend doing it right before bed if at all possible. Unfortunately, I took it a couple of days after I got a cold sore since it's a prescription and you can't see most doctors immediately. I will say I can tell the healing process happened quicker with this medication. The above comment is false, as several insurance companies will cover the majority of the cost. I paid $35 for two pills... (Not like that's cheap but definitely better than paying $300 or without insurance)."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "Started taking this after an outbreak. Thought the first one was just irritation from a wax. Realized after that second time it happened that it was definitely herpes and triggered by bikini waxing. Now take this daily to suppress and have not had an outbreak since (over a year). Have found it definitely has caused me to have increased sweating at night, which is annoying, but otherwise no issues."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I've had outbreaks on my lips for over 25 years. At the age of 30, I'm told to try taking a pill at the first sign, only couldn't find a doctor to prescribe me any until AFTER I broke out so they could SEE I actually had one. Finally, I found a doctor, and now I take 200 mg every third night and a full 400 mg if I even think I'm getting a sore. So far, so good, no outbreaks in 3 years. Love it. No side effects either!"

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I love this medication. I've always used Abreva but decided to get a prescription because Abreva took forever to kick in. I recently had an outbreak because of stress at work. It started with one blister. I put the ointment on, and it went away in 24 hours with a minimal scab. I then had another outbreak 2 days after. This one also went away immediately with a minimal scab. The same weekend, I got a bad outbreak where my lip swelled up as well. I applied the ointment at night. The next day by 6 pm, the swelling was gone and the blisters became a tiny scab. I LOVE this ointment."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I am 19 years old, and I just got diagnosed this 2 days ago. Someone took advantage because I was drunk, he began stroking, and I jumped up about 2 minutes into it. He was a creep all the way around, but that's the only person I could've gotten it from, and I'm positive about that. Now I can't get in contact with the boy, and my life is torn apart. I honestly am so upset about this because this pain is so unbearable. It hurts, burns, and itches to stand up, sit down, walk, etc. When I urinate, it burns super bad, and I am in misery. I can't deal with this for the rest of my life. I haven't even been showering because it burns so bad. I just started the meds 400 mg/8 hrs, no progress yet, though. Any suggestions?"

Acyclovir for Cold Sores "I get cold sores about every other month. I went to my dermatologist, and she gave a prescription for Sitavig. It sticks on your gum, which is weird and takes getting used to, but she told me it is supposed to make you have fewer outbreaks. Sure enough, I went 5 months before my next one. When I saw her next, I did complain that it took a long time to dissolve. She said that was part of what made it work so well. Not sure how, but I will never go back to using my Valtrex."

For Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I have been taking Acyclovir for almost 2 years now. I believe it to work because I've only had 1 outbreak in the 2 years. I was given the option to take 200 mg every 4 hours (equals 5 a day) for 5 days when an outbreak occurs or to take it every day, but I have only taken it for the 1 outbreak."

For Cold Sores "I've suffered with cold sores since I was about 6 years old. I am now 18, and when I was going through my final year of high school, I had at least 1 cold sore a month because of the stress of things, so I was prescribed acyclovir. I was told to take 2 a day for 3 months and then take a break, and it dramatically improved my cold sores. They barely appeared, but when they did, they were half as big as usual, and they healed within about 4 days. Now I only take acyclovir when I feel a cold sore coming on, and it is honestly the best thing that I have used to help."

Acyclovir for Cold Sores "I am a derm nurse. I used the coupon, got mine free, plus got samples from the office. If you use it at the first sign of a flare, it's great. It is kind of messy, and I had white medicine on my teeth. One pill is better than taking Valtrex for up to five days."

Acyclovir for Cold Sores "I have had about four cold sores a year throughout my teens and through my twenties. My dentist had a Sitavig poster in his office and gave me a prescription when I asked about it. I got a cold sore over the 4th of July while at the beach and quickly applied Sitavig. I didn't have any issues with the tablet in my gum and was still able to eat and drink throughout the day. The best part was I didn't get a blister and haven't had one since. The copay for two tablets was $35, which I thought was fair for two treatments."

Acyclovir for Herpes Simplex (HSV) "I used to have cold sores all the time when I was a child, either when exposed to too much cold or when exposed to too much heat. Finally, I found a doctor who gave me a prescription (just a few years ago, I'm already an adult), and the doctor prescribed Zovirax 200 mg 5x a day for 5 days. When I am able to take the medicine as soon as I feel the blister forming, the blister will only last for a day; it will grow and then burst and crust over within twenty-four hours, so I've never really had to take the medication for more than 2-3 days. Very thankful for this medicine."
