For Bacterial Infection "Have been on vancomycin (IV usage) for a few days now. Started treatment in the hospital for a stubborn kidney infection after several other antibiotics didn’t work. Had fevers and chills for ten days prior to starting vancomycin. After just two days on it, the fever went away. I am on day four of treatment at home, but have diarrhea from it. The nurse told me to eat yogurt, and so I’ve started. Will see how it goes. But definitely feeling better from the infection!"

Vancomycin for Meningitis "I was on IV Vanc for various different things (pneumonia, meningitis, and shunt infections) in the last 8 years. It helped clear up the problems but did make me very sick (vomiting) and diarrhea, but was nothing compared to the original problems! Very strong A/B but very powerful also."

For Pneumonia "I was in the hospital for 10 days with severe pneumonia and several other infections in my head, and the combination of vancomycin, Zosyn, Flagyl, and Zithromax cleared the majority of the symptoms in a few days. Vancomycin was the primary antibiotic."

For Bacterial Infection "I got this medication through my IV while in the hospital for an infection in my lymph nodes in my neck. My white count was down, and I felt a lot better after about 3 days! The only side effects I got were nausea and HORRIBLE heartburn (Pepto-Bismol cured this), but it was worth it!"

For Surgical Prophylaxis "I was about to go into the operating room for knee replacement, and they started Vancomycin via IV. Shortly, I started itching, burning, and my skin turned red... especially the scalp, neck, and palms of my hands. Surgery was postponed. This experience was a blessing since I found out the knee replacement contained nickel and I'm VERY allergic to nickel. At least it prevented a disaster!"

For Skin or Soft Tissue Infection "Was given vancomycin via PICC intravenous line for severe toe infection going deep and not healing. With first infusion, felt woozy and weird. Several hours later, got 2nd infusion and felt worse. Told nurse to remove needle. These infusions took 5 hours each! Prepared to undress for bed and saw skin on upper chest and stomach bright red. This was a severe allergic reaction. My skin started peeling off next day and continued doing that for a week. Traumatized badly."

For Bacteremia "This drug saved my life back in January of 2012. I was on it for 30 days at 2 IV solutions a day to clear me up. I’m currently on it again for the same condition. I have never experienced any side effects and was/am pleased and very thankful for its results, as the drug is saving my life again at this very moment that I type this while admitted to the hospital. I have nothing negative to say about the results of this drug."

For Bacterial Infection "Been on vancomycin for a couple of days to treat chronic bacterial diarrhea caused by multiple uses of antibiotics for different ailments. Within an hour of taking it, I had to run to the toilet as it seemed to aggravate my gut, worsening my diarrhea. This continued during the night and into the next day. I've persisted with it as it's worth trying for a few days, but I don't think I can stomach much more. I will give it 2 more days and then speak to my GP. I have also had nausea and lower back pain. Everyone is different, though, as the other side effects listed in the info pack haven't affected me at all, but it has aggravated pre-existing conditions that I have."

For Skin or Soft Tissue Infection "I have received IV vancomycin previously without any adverse reactions, however, this past week I received a dose of it (IV again) and began severely itching and had facial swelling. I was in the ER, and now I don't know if I am allergic to it or just sensitive to it, or if it reacted to one of the medications I already take."

For Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Infection "Have had 6 bones removed from feet from MRSA treated with vancomycin. I can still walk. Trick to stomach pain from antibiotics is to take a probiotic an hour or two after running or taking the antibiotic. Florastor or Align 5x (not reg) are best, IMHO. No diarrhea or stomach pain. Don't let a doctor tell you otherwise. They seem to not teach this in medical school. Bring it with you."

For Clostridioides difficile Infection "I was prescribed 125 mg of vancomycin for C. diff. It was misdiagnosed at first, although it would’ve helped if the doctor had tested me. Switched doctors, tested right away. First day, it slowed my diarrhea down, plus I just felt better. Afterwards, it all went downhill. Lots of gas and diarrhea, pain and tenderness in the abdomen. I’m in the bathroom nonstop. I have had two days where it’s tolerable. I have 3.5 days left, and I pray these antibiotic side effects go away and the infection is gone."

For Surgical Prophylaxis "I was given an IV dose of Vancomycin (due to allergies to other preferred choices) before my total knee replacement in June 2017. I had no reaction to Vancomycin, with no issues with TKR/recovery. My surgery (including all medicine while in the hospital) was covered 100%, due to my work insurance using a Center of Excellence program."

Vancomycin for Bacteremia "The IV antibiotic given via PICC line is causing me to have thrush mouth. I take Rocefin once a day and Vactomycin every 12 hours. I am feeling better, but I am dealing with a lot of indigestion and a sour stomach. I was told by my physician that I will be taking this treatment for one month."

For Bacterial Infection "Last year I was treated at home with numerous antibiotics. This time the doctor in the ER said my tests showed negative, but my vitals were 120 bpm and oxygen levels 88%, bp 130/90, and I looked sick. The doctor said that I must have a bacterial infection, and the nurses came in with 5 bags of IV and said they were treating me for sepsis and I had bacteria all over my body. After that, my attending physician came in and said that my COPD was irritated by pneumonia and bacterial infection, and he ordered vancomycin 1.25 g IV every 8 hours along with other antibiotics into my IV line. I had solid stool and everything was fine. Two days later I started feeling better, and I was out of the hospital in four days, three nights. He sent me home with 500 mg levofloxacin for 4 days and 20 mg prednisone 2x days, still sick! The pulmonologist called in 750 mg levofloxacin for 14 days and a prednisone pack for 5 days. No problem with vancomycin, and I should have taken it longer. But levofloxacin causes diarrhea and raw butt."

For Bacterial Infection "I received IV vancomycin during two separate inpatient hospital stays, first for a MRSA abscess, and once for a severe post-op infection. The second time I had it, I developed uncontrollable diarrhea, but I was also on Zosyn and Invanz. I consider it a necessary drug because it saved my life. Benefits outweigh the risks."
