"Having been born with asthma into a military family, theophylline was the first medicine military doctors would turn to in the 1970s-1980s. My life was absolutely miserable with the side effects. In my teen years, I was up to 1600 mg/day and still having asthma attacks requiring a trip to the emergency room with possible overnight admissions. Once I turned 18, I sought out my own doctors on my own insurance and went to an asthma specialist, which started my journey into an actual life including walking and/or running or just exercising. My asthma has been well controlled by taking an inhaled steroid like Breo, as well as an allergy pill (Zyrtec). That's it. I can't remember the last time I've had to use my rescue inhaler other than when getting a cold or flu. Please remember that doctors are using their 'best guess' to figure out how to treat you and question them if the medication given doesn't seem like it's working. I wish I had an advocate when I was younger."

Theophylline "Having taken this vile, awful-tasting garbage growing up to treat my asthma, I would say it's about as effective as a placebo. It did absolutely nothing for my asthmatic issues. If one can avoid taking this, all the better."

"My asthma has been uncontrolled for years. I have tried everything under the sun to help. My doctor put me on theophylline. The first week I thought I would die from the nausea. Then, wow, I was almost normal! I had not felt that great in forever! I went back to my doctor, told him. His response: I'm sorry, but I can't keep you on this medication. I was so upset I couldn't even ask, why? It was like a miracle for me. Now I'm back to suffering every day of my life."

Theophylline "My asthma came back when I was around 45 years old. My doctors couldn't find any medication that would help. It was so bad I couldn't go outside or open a door in the house. I spent several hours taking breathing treatments each day. Then I was given a prescription for Uniphyl. Everything changed for me when I started taking it. It is a miracle drug."
