Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed a 5-day course of Bactrim to get rid of a UTI. Giving it a 5 rating because it worked, but I have been so sick since taking it. I have flu-like symptoms, chills, sweating, dizziness, and severe nausea. Tylenol helps with the head and body aches. I took my last dose yesterday and still feel like garbage. Hope it gets better soon."

For Urinary Tract Infection "After reading all the reviews on this drug, I was extremely scared to take it. I was to take it for 3 days. Within hours of the 1st pill, my UTI symptoms diminished significantly. I felt about 90% better! The only side effects I experienced were fatigue and a little bit of chills, but that was it. I always took this on a full stomach with lots of water. I think what helped me the most was watching what I ate. I cut off all sugar, caffeine, sweeteners, etc., and ate a lot of regular oatmeal and Greek yogurt. I just finished my pills, so I'll be going back to the doctor to get tested to see if I'm in the clear. So far I'm feeling pretty confident about it. Fingers crossed!"

For Bacterial Skin Infection "Never had any allergic reactions to medicine before, but after starting this for an infection on my foot, over the course of 7 days, I had severe headaches (which I almost never get), fever, chills, body aches, insomnia, dry cough, loss of appetite, and nausea. Was meant to take this for 3 more days, but after calling my doctor, they okayed me to stop. Been off it 12 hours and am already feeling better."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I took one dose of this drug on a Thursday afternoon. Within 2 hours, I had terrible chills, tremors, and leg pains. This went on for 15 hours. After the second dose, I experienced pain in my back, hips, and legs, which was unrelenting for 12-13 hours. The doctor said it was probably not an allergic reaction, but a sensitivity?"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I've been taking this for five days and started getting flu-like symptoms, including sore throat, fever, chills, headache, nausea, lack of appetite, burning eyes when I close them, slight sensitivity to light (my computer screen). I've just read others share the same experience, so I thought it would be necessary for me to share my experience as well."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "I just started taking it on Saturday and wondering how long before this kicks in. I am having hot and cold flashes and sweating like I was walking around with the hose on my head. I repierced my ear and it got infected, really bad. On Friday morning at 3:30, I got up to the worst pain in my ear and head into my jaw. I took the earring out. Then I went to MediQuick, my ear is red, hot, swollen, and now oozing... but I was wondering how long before it starts to work? At the age of 53, I am going back to school to better myself. I could not go today. UGH."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed this medicine for 5 days, two pills a day. After taking the first dose in the morning, my cheeks felt a little warm and looked a little pink, and I had to go to the store, I felt mentally out of it. Then I took the next dose that evening, my cheeks again slightly pink/red, and I went to bed. Woke up 3 hours later to pee, and my legs were SO SHAKY, and I felt so crazy I called my mom at 1:30 AM, which I have never done. She told me to eat something, and after a little while, I felt better and calmed down. I was so turned up I couldn’t sleep much after. Next day, I called to tell the doctor, she said it’s rough on the stomach to eat more while taking it. I decided against taking it the second day, she was just not getting how bad it was. Day two, since I didn’t take any, I thought I would be fine, but I took a walk and felt a little spacey. Then I went to bed that night after only two hours of sleep, woke up with teeth chattering and shaky legs. I couldn’t sleep the rest of the night."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I don't normally write reviews about meds, but this time I am writing this review because of the terrible effect of this med. I had recurrent UTI and took this medicine as prescribed 2x a day. Right after taking the first pill with a full stomach, I felt dizzy, sleepless, my chest felt heavy, and I felt hungry most of the time. The third day taking this antibiotic gave me chills, muscle joint pain, lower back pain, a terrible headache, and sleepless nights. I did not stop because I felt that I could manage the effects, and all I do is eat and drink water. The UTI seems to be improving, having less frequent urination. I went to see the doctor again because after the last pill, I was still feeling the side effects. The doctor says to give it 4 days for the med to wear off, so the doctor gave me meds for bloatedness."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "I am a Type 1 diabetic. I had a small infection at the base of my thumbnail that my doctor prescribed this to fix, twice a day for a week. The drug hit me like a truck; I couldn't take more than 3 pills. In addition to the part-and-parcel diarrhea of antibiotics, I constantly felt queasy, there was occasional blood in my stool even after stopping the drug, and it halved the effects of my insulin. The worst part is that I happened to have hypoglycemia just as the drug really kicked in; the chills that resulted were the worst I'd had in my life. (We think this may be due to an allergy, as my mother cannot take sulfa.) Fortunately, it did do a number on the infection, I just didn't deem the side effects worth it and finished it off with Keflex (cephalexin). I can't give sulfameth/trimeth DS a low rating because it did work as advertised, but it's strong stuff, and I couldn't handle it. Be prepared for a rough time if you need to take this drug, and be extra careful if you're a diabetic."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "I was on sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim 800 mg-160 mg twice a day, and after the 3rd day of taking it, my lymph node was swollen on the back of my neck. I contacted my doctor, and she asked me to continue my med. So I took it, and within an hour, my lips and face were swollen, shortness of breath, cold chills, whole body rashes, and hives on my back. I was sent to the ER and injected with a steroid and received some IV to get the symptoms controlled. I am still feeling very ill, still taking Benadryl every 6 hours to control the allergy. I have been in bed for 4 days now after the ER. Be careful with this antibiotic because it has Sulfa in it, which apparently I am allergic to."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This is a horrible medication for me. Everyone is different, though. I would not recommend it. I have had debilitating headaches and stomach upset since day one. Today (day 4) I had a huge anxiety attack, the worst headache ever, chills, and a low-grade fever. It made me more anxious thinking it could be COVID, but my temperature is down. My pharmacist told me to stop taking it. It helped my UTI, but the side effects are horrible!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "It didn't work, it gave me a cold, headaches, a severe cough, and a yeast infection. It's day 7 of 10, and I have no relief. I do not recommend this. Maybe it just doesn't work for me, I don't know. I don't think I'd ever use it again."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Prescribed 2x a day generic Bactrim DS for 5 days. Stopped after 3 days due to severe side effects that started 30 minutes after the first dose. Only plus, seems to have cured UTI, but I will never take this medicine again. Day 1: Severe nausea/vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, extremely dehydrated despite nonstop drinking water/Gatorade. Dry mouth, dry eyes, dry sensitive skin. Complete loss of appetite. Extreme weakness, couldn’t stand or walk, dizziness, loss of coordination. Brain fog, confusion, and stiff neck. Pressure in the base of the skull. Headache and muscle/joint pain all over. Hands trembling, shaking all over. Chills, hot/cold all day/night. Day 2: These symptoms amplified plus insomnia, anxiety, depression. Panic attacks upon waking up. Terrible vivid nightmares, night terrors, hallucinations, sleep paralysis. Sleep apnea and general trouble breathing. Swollen lips. Pins and needles, face numbness. Afraid to sleep because it felt like I was going to die. Back pain. Brain felt like it was swelling."

For Sinusitis "For me, this medication is an absolute nightmare! After about 8 days on this med, I started feeling intense muscle cramping, fever, and chills. So I stopped taking it. To my surprise, Bactrim can have horrible side effects, which I experienced every one of them. I had a 101-degree fever, chills, skin rash, heart palpitations, aches, and pains beyond what any human should suffer for 5 days afterwards. I thought I was going to have a heart attack and that would be it for me. When my body told me to sleep, I slept. And I did a lot of sleeping because I knew that my body seriously needed the rest to try and repair itself from all of the side effects I stated. It took me 10 full days to even feel semi-normal again. If the rating system would allow, I would give this drug a negative 10 for being so destructive."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I have a UTI and was prescribed this combo, sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim medication, for every 12 hours for 10 days. I took the first dose at night, then the next dose the next morning. I started getting the worst headache ever. Any jolt or noise would make my head surge. Then I just felt out of it, like not in reality. No appetite at all, which is very unlike me. I felt very confused and couldn't get my thoughts in order. I went to work, and I was shaky and felt hot, then cold. I had to leave early because I kept messing up my orders. I was supposed to take my next dose while at work, but I didn't. I felt so scared, like I was going to die. I went home and couldn't shake this feeling of impending doom. I laid down to sleep, and my heart was racing. I felt hot and scared. I couldn't sleep. I will call to get another antibiotic. This one is really weird and scary. I don't understand how an antibiotic can make you feel like this. So glad I got through the night."
